“It’s all a prelude to the horizontal tango,” Dante tells Keith, and drags him to the dance club, two left feet or no. Work has a way of chasing this doctor and vet couple down — the victims of a car crash need their help more than they need a night out. But a night in, tending an injured dog, can be filled with landmines… and music.
Includes bonus stories On Call: Family and On Call: Wildlife.
P.D. Singer lived in Colorado with her slightly bemused husband, one young adult, and seventy-nine pounds of pets. She was a big believer in research, first-hand if possible, so the reader can be quite certain PD skied down a mountain face-first, had been stepped on by rodeo horses, acquired a potato burn or two, and rethought a novel that included sky-diving.
When not writing, playing her fiddle, or walking the sheddiest member of the family, she could be found with a book in hand.
The second short story about Dante, the vet, and Keith, the doc, is again a mix of naughtiness and commitment to their relationship and their professions.
They are still new to their relationship, and one night Dante comes out with the proposal to go dancing; this is something that surprise Keith, since he is not exactly the type to frequent night club. This is probably the nicer thing of this short story, the proof that this is a real relationship based on love more than convenience: when they met Keith and Dante didn’t have in mind to start a long term relationship, but the relationship catches them, it’s love at first sight, and they can’t fight it. Now, some weeks later, reality starts to enter the relationship, and they start to know each other like men and professionals other than like lovers.
In this short story enters also the issue of the interracial relationship: Keith falls in a stereotype sentence, and Dante is a bit taken aback from that, but it’s something that they can manage to overcome without too much sweat. But again, it’s a nice touch, another proof that they are indeed real characters and not only romance lovers.
The On Calls short stories are both really nice, and I would suggest to read them together, or at least at short distance.
Keith and Dante have been dating a few weeks now and Dante wants to go dancing. They run into some excitement along the way, though, and their evening takes some unexpected turns. We get a bit of a glimpse into Dante's last relationship and we get to see Keith and Dante become more committed. I liked it.
The bonus stories were also pretty good. In one, we meet Dante's family, who has been cordial, but not really warm toward Keith and the other was a very amusing bit of comedy relief.
Although this short story features Keith and Dante from On Call - Afternoon, it is a stand alone, and you don't have to read the first story to enjoy this one, though I highly recommend them both. Both characters are very believable as they navigate through the 'getting to know you' phase of a new relationship. Touching and sweet, with plenty of cuddly critters thrown in (Dante is a veterinarian). And let's not forget Harpo, Dr. Keith's 'owner'.
This sequel to On Call: Afternoon is set six weeks later, and could stand alone. Dante wants to go dancing and all Keith's attempts to avoid the ordeal fail. Until they witness a bad car crash on their way to the club...
Another enjoyable read with a lot of background detail and mood skilfully fitted in around the action. A lot happens in this short story.

Another very hot and romantic story of Keith and Dante. Takes place after they have been together for a month and a half or so. A little bit of a crisis that they deal with together, leads to Keith making a confession that might spell trouble for their relationship.
