My skin is cold, hard bronze, and I’ve never felt a heart inside my chest.
I’ve always known I’m not meant for love. I’m built to serve and protect, and I’ve poured my life into my job as a bodyguard. Then she comes along…
A mafia princess turned anonymous in the witness protection program. After her “death”, she has to disappear and take on a new persona to survive. I’m her bodyguard, standing back, silently protecting her. A monster she eyes warily, keenly aware of the differences between our species - a chasm that divides us.
Her touch makes my metal skin grow warm. Inside my bronze chest, something flutters for the first time. A heart.
Invasion of Monsters is the series of how Earth welcomed the aliens once the governments admitted to having contact with life off-planet. These aliens are monsters who live among us, who seek to work and build a life. Some remain feral to their way of life, while others acclimate with the human population.
So many typos and plot errors that I could barely finish it
There were so many inconsistencies and yet repetitive passages that I barely managed to muster through to the end. The characters were sweet, but there were quite literally verbatim repeated paragraphs about their sexual encounters. Copy and paste to fill pages? It may be the fault of an editor skimming, but it was painful to swallow. Simple things like a character's new married name changed from page to page. The errors made it too distracting to enjoy.
I wanted to like it. I LOVE Eden Ember’s books. It had a good premise. It just felt very chaotic and like a “free writing “ session that was published. I only made it about 50% through before I just couldn’t read any more.
If a revised edition comes out, I’d LOVE to try again. But this was just unreadable.
Gleeful Goblin Review: I went into this book having no context for what a Talos was and it took a hot second to get the explanation BUT once I did get it, I think this was a pretty cool idea: “I was born on Thion J5,” he began, his voice a low thrum that seemed to harmonize with the forest’s quiet murmur. “A cyborg planet forged beings like me for distinct purposes. My skin, this bronze you see, is not just a covering—it’s an armor made for resilience, for protection.” I drew my coat tighter around me, the chill in the air suddenly biting deeper. My rational mind reeled at his words—a cyborg planet? Beings forged for purpose? Yet the earnestness in his voice pinned me in place. “And your purpose... is to protect me?” I asked, the skepticism in my tone belying the shiver of intrigue that ran down my spine. “Yes,” he affirmed with a nod that seemed to carry the weight of worlds. “The agency I work for—Monsters for Hire—they tasked me with guarding you. There’s more at stake than you realize.” I swallowed hard, my mind racing as I processed his revelation. Monsters for Hire sounded like something out of a B-movie, not the reality of someone trying to make a fresh start in life. But then again, here stood Hayze—a living testament that the universe was broader and stranger than I’d ever imagined."
It was also interesting to read about how connected to nature and natural elements that Hayze is considering that he's both a cyborg and from another planet so I wouldn't have automatically associated that with being connected to our natural world. But he is and that formed a space for connection and mutual understanding for our MCs because of FMC's work which is a detail I really enjoyed. The way that both of them come together with a common goal and purpose around her work is very wholesome and sweet. Like a Captain Planet meets non-evil Poison Ivy type vibes. Fun times, sweet vibes.

Instead of alpha males and helpless females, Ember has crafted a quiet, sweet romance between an alien made of soft bronze and a woman in the witness protection program. Part of Charlotte Bruno’s protection is an assigned agent, a creature from the planet Thion J5. Now going by Arlet Rune, the former Mafia princess has been moved from the east coast to the Pacific Northwest and works as a wildlife conservationist. Guarding from the shadows, Hayze Russel acts as a silent sentinel. He remains wordless and invisible until Arlet discovers disturbances in the natural order of the forest…he makes himself known.
Read this lovely interracial romance that is devoid of obstacles in their path other than a corporation violating the sanctity of the land by ravaging the forest and leaving the waters tainted. As the two get to know each other, they also commune with nature finding joy in their shared interest in protecting nature and eventually an undeniable attraction that’s mutual. The cover is very reflective of the characters contained within. I have received an ARC from Booksprout and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.
This was a great story and I do love a strong female that gets pushed to the limits and walks away for a better life. And an equally strong male that is a protector and just wants to be loved for himself. Charlotte Bruno is the Princess daughter of the mafia King and she hates that life and wishes to help the Environment and so she goes into Witness Protection and comes out Arlet Rune who is now an Environment Researcher for the Pacific Northwest Environment group and she loves her job and her new friends. Haze Russel is a Talos bodyguard who has been sent to protect Charlotte/ Arlet and as he watches her from afar he is drawn to her and everything about her makes him feel something for the first time his heart and when they finally meet there is an instant connection between them and have so much in common and there love of the forest and nature bring them together as one. Do they get there HEA or does her father find her in the end.

Former mafia princess Charlotte reinvents herself anew as Arlet (h) with the help of the witness protection program and moves to the Pacific Northwest working in a remote area as an environmental conservationist for a non-profit. Arlet is initially unaware of the lifetime bodyguard assigned to protect her by the Monsters for hire agency, a stealthy bronze armored monster, a Talos, Hayze (H). He silently watched and protects her, btu eventually Arlet senses she’s being watched and cunningly causes him to reveal himself to her. As the two get to know one another, Hayze finds himself not only protecting Arlet but also becoming involved in her environmental protection efforts against poachers, illegal logging, and corporations. Things heat up between the two and Hayze realizes Arlet is more than just someone to protect, she’s also his mate. Hot and steamy monster-human romance with plenty of action, danger, and more.
'Guarding Arlet wasn’t just duty. It was desire— a deep yearning to keep her safe because she was mine in a way no other being ever had been or would be again. My chest swelled with emotions too complex to dissect under this watchful moon; instead, I let them wash over me like tides embracing shores— a Talos monster falling hopelessly for his human mate.'
I really enjoyed this book. It was a sweet read. Good world building and I loved both Hayze and Arlet. Hayze himself fascinated me, and he was so protective and sweet. Arlet- once a mafia princess, now an environmental researcher in a witness protection program. I loved the building of their relationship. I loved the role of nature and environment in this story. 4 stars.
Charlotte becomes Arlet after entering the witness protection program and starts a fresh, new place and job as environmental conservationist for a non-profit. Arlet didnt know she would be assigned a bodyguard by the Monsters for hire agency, but when she relaises shes being watched she does her all to get them to reveal hemselves. Hayze had been her assigned protector a man made of Bronze, and a heart that only beats for her, his mate. well written steamy monster/humane protector romance.

This book would’ve been so much better with more editing or beta readers. Many repetitive phrases which should’ve been edited out or places where entire sections sort of repeat with small changes. I frequently found myself wondering if I had lost my place and was re-reading, but it was just bad editing. I liked the characters and story overall.
DNF at 10%. HUGE plot holes, HUGE timing issues, an intellectually challenged info-dumping hero, and a MC with an unexplanable job that requires an advanced degree she CLEARLY does not posses. Apparently witness protection can just give someone a PhD/Masters in this world, her poor coworkers.
The story and characters were both poorly developed. Lots of redundancies in the action and gaps in the story made for a confusing plot. Too much of the dialog was on the nose, both the internal and external dialog. Boring as well as unrealistic.

Being a Princess is most girls dreams. But a mafia princess not so much. Charlotte turns into witness for the state and is "reborn" as Arlet. The mountains and forests her new digs which she loves, but her past still Arlet has no clue what cage she rattle when she told secrets. Talos is her hidden (not so well) forever guardian and in the course of varying situations he starts to feel things he's never felt and his protection duty gets more interesting. Eden brings the goods, detailed story with danger and action and of course the heat.
The story has depth and meaning to it, but I just could not get into this book. I admit I skimmed a lot of this, just so I could finish it. Not a fan, sadly.
