A fellow should obey the rules of courtship. Unless he’s not a gentleman.
To protect his guardianship of his beloved younger brother, newspaperman Tristan Kingston turns to courtship and marriage. But the woman must be just right—maternal, proper, and unbothered by marrying an earl's bastard. Dreamy yet practical Lady Andromeda Merriweather seems like the perfect choice.
But she’s already taken.
Everyone thinks Lady Andromeda is engaged to a baron in Cornwall. She’s not. It’s a ruse to hide a bigger secret: she runs an erotic lending library with her four sisters. When the confident Mr. Kingston swaggers in, announcing his intentions to court her, Andromeda’s in trouble. In every way possible.
Because she’s got a secret, and he’s a newspaperman.
Because he wants to marry her, and she’s fake engaged.
Because he kisses her, and she wants more.
He doesn't seem to care she’s unavailable. He doesn’t seem to believe it. And while his attentions threaten her secret, he’s a much bigger threat to her heart.
Grab your seat in this romantic comedy by USA Today Bestselling author Charlie Lane, where propriety meets passion! Will Tristan break the rules or win Lady Andromeda's heart? Find out in "Never Woo the Wrong Lady" – because in love, some rules are meant to be broken!
DNF at 12%. The writing is good, but the premise is silly: the eight sisters of a duke, five of which are marriageable age, have all vowed to never marry in order to continue operating an erotic book lending library out of their parlor.
Where do I begin? You can never go wrong with Charlie Lane! I adore her writing style, The way she can evoke every single one of my feels. This story is absolutely delicious. I know of no better word, for I simply could not get enough. I will always come back for a second helping of whatever she’s dishing out. This light-heard treasure takes a girl stuck in grief and reawakens the lost woman she was. Tristan may have been born on the wrong side of the blanket, but he owns the darn blanket now. This is a man who has fought to create a place for himself and the brother he loves so dearly. He will do absolutely anything for those he loves. Andromeda is very like-minded, always taking on the challenges to protect her sisters. The chemistry between them cannot be denied, I was in complete girlish giddiness as Andromeda became ‘aware’ of Tristan and seeing him losing every bit of his blasted control, was simply delightful. But what truly made this one stand out for me is the humour laced throughout the entire story. From spunky butlers to marauding grannies, the comedic relief delighted me beyond words. I was in complete hysterics with images of an army of Ton dragons descending upon the evil Aunt’s home. All of it born out of the love the sisters invoke from all who know them. I even managed to fall for their overbearing brother. Clearford is clearly guided by love above all else despite demanding sisters marry and I cannot wait for his story. There is so much to commend this book that I can barely scratch the surface.
To protect his guardianship of his beloved younger brother Alex, newspaperman Tristan Kingston turns to courtship and marriage. Dreamy yet practical Lady Andromeda Merriweather seems like the perfect choice. Everyone thinks Lady Andromeda is engaged to a baron in Cornwall. She’s not. It’s a ruse to hide a bigger secret: she & her four sisters runs an erotic lending library which their mother started. When the confident Mr. Kingston swaggers in, announcing his intentions to court her, Andromeda’s in trouble. This was such a fun, entertaining & witty romance, I loved both Tristan & Andromeda, he’s hardworking, courteous & gorgeous but also the natural son of an Earl, he’s now the guardian of thirteen year old tearway Alex who he thinks the world of. Andromeda carries quite a few secrets, which gradually unravel as the story unfolds. The chemistry between the couple sizzles. I loved how their relationship grew & deepened & how when things became difficult help came form an unexpected quarter. I loved how the Merriweather family were there for each other as were Tristan & Alex. My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Never Woo the Wrong Lady. My fellow readers are you looking for a clap happy, feel good romance story, with some oh so heated vivacious tete-a-tete moments? Then listen to this. This love story will leave you begging to be revived from some of the most amazing fun that transpires in this book. The characters without effort makes the book come alive with their exciting entertainment. To start off with my review. Alex is my favorite thirteen year old character of all time. Tristan’s future wife will have no worries on how he will handle his children. I feel that Alex has blown up this book with his conundrum of antics, and his roller coaster of emotions shared with his brother. I love Tristan and Alex’s relationship. There’s truly nothing like brotherly love when two brothers are there for one another. In their ups and in their downs. And will read a number of these antic with Alex and his friends. My favorite part during Triston and Andromeda’s walk in the park, is the carriage going boom (paraphrasing what Alex’s mate said). I was on pins and needles. The end result was to much at the end of this scene. Let’s not forget about Andromeda and her sisters. Their little weekly party in the back room of their house has all the woman of nobility up in arms. Nobility and ladies of certain age covertly beg for more of shall we say (certain) books to be delivered in the most uncommon fashion. Should the sisters continue these interesting orders of supplies and demand? I’m a bit bias. But you read the book and search for the sister’s solution, to their plan of action. Let’s talk about Tristan and Andromeda. I perhaps have an idea of where Alex is learning some of his early Rakish ways. Ladies the sure deep undertone and whispers of dirty talk that spills from Tristan’s pink and pillow lips—. Girl that man should be ashamed of himself. The man had me imagining some things get me in so much trouble. As I said before my downpour wet thoughts will not let me pass the threshold of the pearly gates. Uhhh.Yes I’ll have a tall Tristan and a cup of chocolate syrup on the side. Thank you. Ain’t know way a man can walk around in this book and have my motor running on empty, but I’ll tell you Tristan did. Lord I just got goose bumps up and down my arms, thinking about the juicy parts that sure enough zeroed in on some of my body parts. So—. What was I talking about? Ahh yes! Tristan and Andromeda are insanely amazing. I will talk about the characters together in a moment. I have to give some props to my Girl Andromeda. Well first off, I love Andromeda’s name. I hope that this name will be used in other historical romance novels, by some very talented writers. Andromeda reminds me of a sure, confident and independent woman. I know that she can run numerous laps around Tristan and her sisters, and not break one hill or have a curl out of place. No matter how hard Andromeda fought it, she was pulled in by Tristan and his sultry ways of persuasion. Reel me in Tristan. Throw that line and just hook me baby! The somewhat modern pace of the romance worked with other tools of the book. This insures the readers that they have a real good page turner here. As I stated before, the characters are simply amazing with their humor, their compassion, their love and their overwhelming persistence of making sure that their families keep their homes and love ones afloat. Just for precaution I would give Alex his own special wing. The writing is phenomenal good in this most amazing story. I enjoyed the realism and the true romance of love. You will not be able to resist all the wholesomeness this book brings, just as I have. I give this book two snaps and a, twist. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on! I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Andromeda Merriweather and a few of her sisters are running a library of sorts where they lend out erotic books to matrons and widows of the ton. They’ve been doing it for four years, running the risk of all of them being ruined if they are found out, including their younger sisters who are not involved with this. But it was something their mother had been doing before she passed and they saw it as a legacy and continued with it. The women who read these books are at risk, as well, so keeping everything secret is a must.
Tristan Kingston is a friend of Andromeda’s brother, Samuel, The Duke of Clearford. Tristan is the bastard son of an earl, but was raised in his father’s house along with a younger brother, Alex, who is now 13. Tristan went to the same school as Samuel and they’ve remained great friends. Tristan is a newspaperman and owns three newspapers and is the guardian of Alex, who is making some bad choices and garnering some unwanted attention from his aunt.
Samuel has an issue because he has five sisters of marriageable age and the only one that’s betrothed is Andromeda and her betrothed has never shown his face. His idea is to have Tristan court Lottie, Andromeda’s older sister, but Tristan has his eye on Andromeda. What a situation.
Tristan needs to marry well and not for financial purposes. He needs to get Alex’s aunt off his back. She’s threatening to take Alex away because she thinks Tristan is an unfit guardian. Once you see how this kid acts, you’ll see why, but who can control a 13-year-old, really? Regardless, Tristan wants to marry someone who has a reputation that’s above reproach. Who better than the sister of a duke?
This book is rocks on every level, although I hate the name Tristan, which is neither here nor there and has no bearing on this review. I liked his character. He was everything a real man should be; good looking, kind, hard working, and dedicated. He really loved his brother and would stop at nothing to see that he was happy and successful.
Andromeda (love her name) was headstrong, pushy, and bossy—traits I don’t usually like in any character, but somehow I didn’t mind it with her. It just worked. She knows what she wants and what she likes and gosh darn the consequences.
Ultimately, this is a story of love conquers all, as well as a story of love and loyalty. There are steamy scenes and some instances where I laughed out loud, earning it a solid five stars.
*I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily left a review.
4.5/5 This was a fun rom-com that also focused on how to move forward while still honoring the past. I loved the recurring analogy of a candle lighting up a dark room when you know what your future to look like. It had lots of lighthearted moments but also highlighted Lane’s ability to have you emotional the next.
I enjoyed the self-made hero and tension he brought between being a newspaper man and guardian to an Earl while being a natural son. Tristan falls hard for Andromeda while reconciling his duty to his brother.
Andromeda is unsure of what she wants at first and if she had her way, it would be that nothing would change. Except as several domino pieces begin to fall it causes her world to turn upside down and it takes her a while to sort through what she wants it look like now.
The empowerment the sisters and other ladies of the ton had through the erotic lending library and the strength of friendship that came from it was heartwarming.
It doesn’t have any characters from previous series, so there was a lot to set up and took a little to get going. There’s quite a bit of action going on towards the end that also seems like it was setting the series arch more than the romance of the current story.
Overall I enjoyed Andromeda and Tristan’s story and looking forward to the rest of the series.
Never Woo the Wrong Lady is the first book in The Gentleman’s Guide to Courtship. It centers around five of seven sisters to a Duke after he encourages his sisters to wed. The brother also creates a guide to courtship (albeit a bad one). Some of the older sisters have continued running an erotic lending library in their mother’s memory but they have no actual experience of their own.
There are three encounters.
I received a paperback copy of the book from the author. All opinions are my own.
The Duke of Clearford is responsible for a house full of sisters. He's on a mission to have them all married off by writing a book on courtship, He did promise his mother they would marry for love. Lady Andromeda's first kiss is from Mr. Tristan Kingston, a self-made man born illegitimate, yet the guardian of his half-brother, the Earl of Avelford, only thirteen years old. Something tells me the earl will have an important part in a book later in the series. Unbeknownst to their brother, the older sister's protect the lending library of certain books started by their mother. The ladies of the ton create comic relief, at the same time, the library causes concern for scandal and Andromeda and Tristan's happiness. A few of these scandalous books have been in other romance books I've read, but not with this twist. The pace was slower than Lane's previous books and took me longer to engage, but interesting in it's complexity. Explicit sex. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book gifted by the author.
Charlie Lane has done it again. This was a great series-starter. I love Charlie’s writing style, and the humor in this book is top notch. The couple has chemistry in spades. I highly recommend this book
What a great book to start a series with. I loved this story from the beginning to the end.
The thing I love about Charlie Lane's books is that her characters aren't always involved with the upper ton even when they are, they lead, unusual lives. And she always manages to make them lighthearted, emotional, sexy and so much more.
Andromeda is a trying to carry on her mother's legacy by lending out scandalous exotic books to widows, and married women within Society however her brother has decided it's time for her and her sisters to wed but can she truly give up her mother's legacy and be happy at the same time? Or has she simply been just thinking she's happy with keeping her mother's legacy alive when in truth she wants so much more in her life?
Tristan is an earl's illegitimate son, he is also well-known for how many paper companies he runs along with the many travels he has done. But along with all of this he is also the guardian of his thirteen year old brother who is reckless and needs discipline in order to become the Earl he will be in the future. But how can do Tristan possibly do this when he knows nothing about the ton, along with fight off his aunt who wants to take his brother from him?
With the help of his best friend, he decides to try courting his best friend's sister though not the one his best friend chose for him. However he never expected to feel anything but desire and compassion for her, he ends up falling in love with her spirit, her intelligence, her beauty and everything she is.
With the help of his brother she can't but try and help him but Andromeda only thought to discourage him not to encourage herself for something more than what it is which is to get her brother off her and her sisters' backs about marriage however once she gets to know both him and his brother she discovers that not only is he intelligent, handsome, thoughtful and so much more.
They both found themselves following in love by simply being themselves with each other instead of just being like they had been in front of everyone else, all they needed was a little push from a thirteen year old brother and her brother who's determined to marry off his sisters.
I received this book from Wolf Publishing as an arc in exchange for a voluntary review and this is purely based off of my own personal opinion and that of no one else.
This is the first book in the Gentleman Guide to Courtship a new series by Charlie Lane. It brings a smile to my face when one of my favorite authors has a new series and if this first book is an indication of what is to come, I am extremely happy!
Tristan Kingston, is the bastard of an earl, and friend of Samuel, The Duke of Clearford, sister to Andromeda Merriweather. Samuel had promised his parents that he would let his sisters find love when they married but they are all past what is considered a marriageable age. He knows his friend Tristan is seeking a wife so that his guardianship to his thirteen year old brother, the Earl of Avelford isn’t challenged. Samuel provides him with a list of suggestions for wooing a lady and suggests he court his oldest sister, Charlotte. Tristan has always been attracted to Andromeda but she supposedly is engaged but her betrothed has never been seen. He decides to pursue her anyway. Let the courtship begin!
Samuel is unaware that his sisters are lending erotic books to matrons and widows and this is the reason they do not wish to marry. Their mother was doing this before she passed and they feel this is a way to honor her. If this secret was to be exposed both the ladies reading them and the girls reputations would be ruined.
What I love about Charlie Lane books is her amazing ability to write about sexy, kind, smart, loyal, sometimes scandalous men and the extraordinary, unique women who complete them. Tristan was handsome, and had all the characteristics of a great man. Andromeda although bossy, and a bit hard to handle, was also devoted, loyal, funny, and knew what she wanted and would not settle for anything less, I respected that about her.
I was impressed that Samuel could see past Tristan being a bastard and wanted him for one of his sisters. It was adorable when Andromeda realizes her feelings for Tristan, trust, and loyalty was such an intricate part of their love story. The scenes with her “betrothed” had me laughing and the steamy love scenes were perfect.
I received an ARC (advanced review copy) from the Wolf Publishing and I am leaving this review voluntarily, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
A duke with eight younger sisters and apparently no suitors able to capture their hearts - for that is what he promised their mother before she died - he would allow all his sisters to marry for love. It’s been several years and enough is enough! He decides to give the ton’s bachelors a little push and write ‘A Gentleman’s Guide To Courtship’.
[now read the blurb if you haven’t already]
And who does the duke enlist to test his theories? Yes, his best friend since Eton, the bastard son of an earl and self-made newspaperman. A little untraditional, but traditional doesn’t seem to work for his sisters. And what happens when you throw a headstrong young woman and man used to getting what he wants together? Fireworks!
She’s desperate to keep things as they are, lost in her own darkness and unwilling to give up her fake fiancé. Only true love could possibly change her mind, but then everything else would have to change as well… He’s desperate to do right by his younger brother, the earl, and gain the trust of the woman he’s long felt a connection to. He can’t promise love, but he will move heaven and earth for her if she lets him.
⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ These sisters stick together for better or for worse, and the way the ton’s matrons step up to save the day is brilliant! And I’m an absolute sucker for a delicious underdog MMC. Another thing I loved was that even though he’s desperate to get the girl, he never pressures her - it’s always her move. It helps mightily he’s very good at reading people 😉 This tale is filled with excellent banter and dry wit, secret shenanigans and mischief, sweet naughtiness and sizzling steam! It’s fun, fast and so very captivating in Charlie Lane’s signature style. This is the first book in a brand new series, and it certainly left me curious to find out more about this family! A wonderful and entertaining read I would happily recommend!
Such a good start of a new series! Samuel, the Duke of Clearford, declared that it was time for the eldest five of his eight sisters to marry. He intended to honor his promise to his dying mother that they could each choose their own husbands, but after multiple proposals had been rejected, he decided to write a guide to assist potential suitors in having successful courtships. Tristan was the bastard son of the late Earl of Alvelford. He was also the guardian of his younger half-brother Alex, who was now the current Earl of Avelford. While Tristan was a very successful self-made businessman who owned several newspapers, Lady Eldridge, Alex’s aunt, could not let go of the fact that he was a bastard, and was determined to raise Alex herself. It did not help matters that thirteen year old Alex was creating havoc, smoking and drinking. In an attempt to gain Alex the support he needed, and thwart Lady Eldridge, Tristan sought advice from his good friend Samuel, who suggested that he marry one of his five sisters. What Samuel did not know was that his sisters were running a secret lending library and had no desire to marry and have a man forbid her from continuing. What follows is a story full of conflict, secrets, naughty books and hot kisses. Tristan is determined to court Andromeda, who is supposed to be already engaged to a faraway Baron. They have blatant chemistry, enjoy each other’s company and want to guide and protect Alex. What they don’t have is love, at least not yet. Just when things are falling into place for them, Lady Eldridge rears her ugly head. There is never a dull moment in this story. It is steamy, exciting and boasts a wonderfully orchestrated, and much needed, comeuppance that will have you cheering. I can hardly wait for what comes next in the series.
𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐝𝐲 is a delightful historical romance novel that follows the adventures of Tristan Kingston, a successful owner of three newspapers, an illegitimate son of an earl who recognized him and he was raised in the same house with his half-brother, Alex. After the death of Tristan's father, he was named guardian of Alex, who is now a thirteen-year-old wild teenage boy - Tristan loves his brother very much and realizes he must marry well (not for money) but for station to provide Alex with a good name as he takes the title of earl.
Lady Andromeda Merriweather is the sister of Tristan's long-time friend, Samuel, Duke of Clearford. Her family & everyone else thinks she is engaged to a baron in Cornwall; but she isn't, it is a sham to hide a scandalous secret that she & four of her sisters have. After the death of their mother, they are carrying on running her erotic books lending library to the Ton's matrons and widows. The Mr. Tristan Kingston decides he wants to court Andromeda & not Charlotte (Lottie), the sister that Samuel requested he court. This creates big problems for Andromeda - she is attracted to Tristan, what about her fiancé, what will happen if he finds out about the lending library. Sparks fly between the two of them and they find themselves drawn to each other. But can they trust each other with their secrets, or will their love be doomed by deception and danger? This book is a charming and witty read, that keeps you entertained and engaged; the characters are well-developed and have great chemistry. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
What’s a duke to do if he has a house full of sisters, none of whom are married or betrothed? Samuel Merriweather, Duke of Clearford, decides to write a Guide to Courtship, not for his sisters, for prospective suitors. His friend, Tristan Kingston is the first to, sort of, follow it. Tristan needs to marry for the sake of his younger brother. Lady Andromeda and her sisters have a secret. Tristan is a dangerous suitor because he is a newspaperman. Tristan is determined to woo and win Andromeda, and she gives him a merry chase. This a fun story with lots of poignant moments. Tristan and Andromeda are great couple. Alex is a handful. I love the family dynamic of the Merriweather family. This is the first book in a new series which looks like it will be great fun. The best advice in Samuel’s Guide? According to Tristan it’s Never Woo the Wrong Lady. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I so love Charlie Lane’s books! She pens such amazing stories, with vivid characters, a beautiful prose, some humor and some angst. This book is the perfect example and I really loved the “dark” secret the sisters kept and the reason why they started their lending library. Andromeda and Tristan are both great characters who love wholeheartedly and would sacrifice everything for the people they love. I really adored this new family and their friends and I can’t wait to see how all the sisters will find their HEA (even the youngest ones!). And the Duke of course! Will he be able to put to good use his own Guide to Courtship? And will the other sisters? Can’t wait to read the following books!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a wonderful story that breaks the mold of how you normally see the upper classes. The enemies to lovers, story, between Tristian an Earls Bastard, who has worked hard to make his way in life as a newspaperman, and Lady Andromeda, who has several big secrets in her life that she must protect at all costs or face ruination of her and her 3 sisters. Throw in a 13 year old ward for Tristian who is his half brother and a handful, Andromeda's brother who is determined to marry his sisters well, and the adventure begins. There are some great twists in the story and help to save the day from a very unexpected source. I didn't want to stop reading this story, and really look forward to hearing more of the family. Well worth reading
A steamy story. First in a series. I enjoyed the book. There are bits that are probably not true to how things would be then, but whilst I would normally find these could grate in other stories this one was amusing in places and I found it worked. It is a shame we didn’t hear too much about the other sisters except Lottie and of course Andromeda, but I assume that will follow in later books. I wasn’t sure about Samuel’s character, and the Baron and his butler’s interactions seemed odd. Nice to have a story where an illegitimate son and also in trade as the male lead. As I said I liked the story so those did not pit me off. Roll on to Book 2
Absolutely loved Tristan and Andromeda's wonder story. Tristan must marry to secure his young brother's safety from their spiteful aunt who resents their very existence, his brother is a lord and dispite Tristan's status they are very much a family. So marry Tristan must, he decides that Lady Andromeda is the right proper, upstanding Lady who will become his wife, the only obstacle is her 'engagement' albeit a fake one to cover her rather illicit lending library of salacious and scandalous books. How will Andromeda keep her secrets ftom a newspaper man hellbent on winning her over.
Tristan needed to get married to protect the guardianship of his little brother. Tristan has certain criteria he wanted his wife to have. He has picked who he wants, Lady Andromeda, who is the sister of his friend who is a Duke. Tristan does not care if Andromeda is engaged, he decides he wants her anyway. Andromeda has some secrets, which she does not want Tristan, who is a newspaper man to know. I really enjoyed this book, I laughed at some things, and the love scenes were nice.
I received an ARC of this book, I am leaving my honest opinion.
Duke Clearford has a house full of sisters to marry off. In order to expedite the process he writes a book on courtship. Unbeknownst to him, his sisters continue a process begun by their mother, to honor her memory, whereas they lend erotic books to the women of the Ton. If known it could be that none will be able to marry. This first book is Andromeda's story. I enjoyed Andromeda & Tristan's story. I loved the fact that the Duke, valuing people by their actions and not accident of birth, did not hold the fact that Tristan was a bastard against him. Definitely a winner.
Absolutely adored this spicy Regency romance where Andromeda & Tristan make a perfect match. If you ever wondered how Mme Bovary operated or how erotic romances were spread among the matrons of the ton, you need to read this. If you hated Bridgertons, this is not for you. Loved Tristan deciding to ditch the guide on wooing ladies and especially how he sealed the offer to woo with a kiss then and there.
Recommended for lovers of Regency romance with spice, of contrary heroines, questions of honor and especially those who root for illegitimate newspaper moguls to find their HEA.
A Pleasure to Read! As soon as Tristan Kingston set his eyes on Lady Andromeda Merriweather he just knew that this was the lady for him. I loved the 'huge' secret the Merriweather girls had been hiding for 4 years. Absolutely brilliant! And simply adored all the characters and the way they all fitted together in this easy to read, funny (in parts), steamy (in others) and just perfect story. I read an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of this delightful book and am happy to leave my review.
A lady that runs a secret erotic library and an illegitimate son of an Earl who is a newspaperman and a good friend of the lady’s brother. Tristan sets his sights on Andromeda and her engagement doesn’t deter him from his goal to woo and wed her. However, the lady has secrets that a newspaperman cannot discover or her life would end in scandal. A must read book that has passion, secrets, and comedy.
I love Charlie Lane’s Regency romances. The chemistry between the couples always sizzles. This one is no exception I loved how their relationship grew and deepened and how when things became difficult help came from an unexpected quarter. I am looking forward to the next instalment. I received an ARC copy and am leaving an unbiased and truthful review.
The over the top climax could have been better. I liked the cut direct but, it would have been better if the Lady would have found her cache suddenly gone. The price of guardianship being that of a social pariah. The Duke could have roared to protect his sister's reputation but he's set dressing anyway.
This is the first book by Charlie Lane that I have read. So glad I did. Wonderful story line and characters you become quickly invested in. Loved the humor. Loved the passion. Loved the book!!!
I like the naughty lending library - I haven’t read a book with a plot like that before and it was cute. This was pretty low angst and enjoyable & I definitely want to read the next book in the series.
(FMC and her sisters have all vowed to never marry in order to continue operating an erotic book lending library out of their parlor. The parlor in their brother’s house. Their brother, a Duke.)
A great start to a new series. This had it all, entertaining, great characters and story, and overall fun to read. It didn't take long to fall for Tristan and Andromeda.
