Oh this was such a delight!

From start to finish, I was immersed in this one. The characters are fantastic, there's an intriguing mystery regarding murdered werewolves, and there's enough character stuff to get me invested without slowing down the action.

Sage is a Werewolf who wants to be a detective, Oren is a warlock detective who prefers to work alone. When a friend of Sage turns up dead, the two must work together to solve the case.

I just loved all of this. The premise was so original, and the characters so full of life (despite some of them being dead). The story flowed so neatly, and the narration really brought the characters a lot of warmth. There's a decent pace that keeps the story moving forward, while still making time for us to get to know everyone.

I really enjoyed the narration, too; I thought it was done well.

This was a unique urban fantasy and I'd love to read more set in this world.

With thanks to NetGalley for an audio ARC

Oh, I really liked this one. I loved the premise of the story, the execution was great, the world building, the characters, it all just worked. I love the relationship between Sage and Oren. Such a great duo.
I can't wait to read the next book in that series and hope it's worth the wait as this one was great.

* urban fantasy YA
* les univers avec des fantômes, des mages, des loups-garous
* un début de romance
* found family
* les enquêtes
* récit à la 3ème personne

A detective Warlock? Grumpy sunshine and enemies romance? It was all of my favourite everything’s in a book.

Sage was a great character and I so enjoyed the world this was set in. I’m all for werewolves, warlocks and the supernatural and add in a murder mystery element and you have a winner!

Sage, an eager investigator and Oren ‘I work alone’ Rinalis make for a great dynamic. He’s reluctant and she’s out to prove herself and there’s a lot on the line. Werewolves are being murdered and there’s a race against time to prevent anymore deaths. Surely they can put aside differences and work together?

I loved the trope and I was absolutely HOOKED. The audiobook immersed me like no other and the narration was super easy to get into. From the amazing characters, to a poltergeist housemate, there’s so much about this book to love and enjoy. I am fully signed up for whatever else this author brings out now!

Thank you to the author and publisher for this audiobook on NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.

I absolutely adored this book; the characters were really well written, the plot remained interesting throughout, I didn’t see the twist coming, and of course it being set in my home of Manchester was just the pièce de résistance!

2.25⭐️ I didn’t really enjoy this, it’s short and passed the time but there was nothing special here tbh.

The mmc and fmc had zero chemistry.. friendly? sure. Romantic? Absolutely not. I was actually so bored with their interactions.

The plot was unique enough but it just felt like it was missing something, the twist I kinda saw coming. Side characters were ok but again nothing special..

I won’t be continuing the series💫

All the Hidden Monsters follows Sage, a seemingly ordinary girl who is also a werewolf just trying to find purpose in her life. When her supernatural friend Lucy is murdered in the human realm, Sage is determined to assist in the investigation, which is headed up by warlock Oren Rinallis. Despite lacking magical abilities or immortality, Sage relies on her keen sense of right and wrong and her unique ability to scent out a killer, even as tensions rise between her and Oren, risking their own lives in the process.

This supernatural murder mystery is dual perspective, with chapters for Sage and Oren. I listened to the audiobook of All The Hidden Monsters, and Kate Dobson narrated both characters' perspectives. I really enjoyed her narration - the range of accents and intonations to distinguish the characters was great, and she heightened the tension of the murder mystery while also conveying all the emotion from the plot's twists and turns. I loved that it was set in Manchester, England, which is right next to where I live, so I loved the accents and the casual British style to it. Overall, it was such a fun and easy-to-listen-to book and it really suited the audiobook format.

I really enjoyed this supernatural murder mystery. It wasn't easy to predict, and I'm not ashamed to admit that although I normally guess the murderer, I didn't figure out this one! That final 25% of the book was amazing. Another thing I really enjoyed is that we naturally got to find out more about the supernatural world as the plot progressed rather than having a big lore-dump at the start of the book. As the first book in a series, it did a great job of introducing us to this world and to the characters, while providing a really strong mystery. I think the sequels will be even better, building up the world further, and further evolving the characters' relationships now that the core group of characters is established.

This is a great introduction to a supernatural murder mystery series, with a plot as strong as the characters, and I would definitely recommend the audiobook format! I'll definitely be listening to the future books in this series!

This sharp and striking YA murder mystery will captivate you from the start. With found family, fledgling romance and fascinating concepts of magic and the supernatural, it’s easy to see why it was shortlisted for the Chicken House Children’s Fiction Competition.

Protagonist Sage is a werewolf with a haunted past and big dreams of absolving herself of her sins by solving crimes for the Arcānum, a detective agency run by warlocks. When one of her friends falls victim to a grisly attack, she refuses to be kept off the case. So she teams up with moody, handsome warlock Oren to track down the elusive perpetrator.

Fans of YA mystery will love the fast pace, short sentences and constant action that propel the story onwards as the central pair – with the help of a poltergeist, two sphinxes, and a cluster of warlocks, witches and werewolves – pass between the human world (Upside) and the supernatural world (Downside) finding clues and forming theories. There are high-intensity moments of bad decisions, teenage angst and near death, and softer moments of character development as they learn to reckon with their inner monsters and heal, trust and forgive themselves and each other.

If you love a morally-grey love interest with a soft side – the embodiment of the ‘I hate everyone but you’ trope – a band of misfits coming together against a common enemy, and a plot twist at the end I for one did not see coming, this one is for you.

I’m super grateful to Chicken House Books for my ARC.

Even on second read, it’s hard to believe this is a debut novel! You have to have a magnificent imagination to come up with such a unique story like this one 🖤

All The Hidden Monsters is YA fantasy with a murder mystery plot. We follow an unlikely team of supernaturals, as they attempt to find a serial killer, who’s hunting werewolves in the human world. I think what made this so likeable, was combing cozy crime with magic, romance and humour, resulting in this book feeling like a warm hug, whilst the mystery element compelled me to keep reading. My favourite trope is found family, which is portrayed so beautifully in this book.

Amie perfectly intertwines her fantasy world with the human elements of Manchester, by creating a home for supernatural beings underneath the city. The plot was easy to follow and the world building wasn’t dragged out, which is often the case with book one in a fantasy series.

The romance subplot is delightful! The classic grumpy x sunshine trope is executed perfectly, and I adore the FMC Sage. Infact, all the main gang were extremely likeable.

This is definitely a comfort read and I feel like if you enjoyed AGGGTM series, you’ll love this!

This book worked pretty well with me. I'll have to re-read it before the second instalment comes out, because there are lots of interesting side characters and they are worth revisiting. The plot is engaging and the story absolutely delivers what it promises: a great entertainment, twists and turns, friendship and more. A perfect YA fantasy.

P, the ghost, stole the entire book. I wish I had a ghost friend who was willing to cook all of my favorite meals and remind me, no matter how hard things get on a day-today basis, that everything is going to be alright no matter what. 🥰🥰🥰.

Enjoyable Quotes:

“Shock produces the truth more often than not. And quicker. I just wanted answers.”

“Secrets are secret for a reason.”

“The two things a person needs to survive, I cannot have. Food and basic interaction with the people you love. I sometimes wonder if it’s some kind of punishment. A curse of the poltergeist.”

“You will be welcome here for the time you work with Sage,” she said quietly. “But only if you can treat us—her—with respect.”

“A person could spend a whole life compiling an encyclopedia inside their own head, a library of knowledge, a wealth of history. Then poof. All gone into nothingness the moment death took them. As if none of it had ever been there at all.”

“Just because I choose not to surround myself with friends, would rather be working alone, it doesn’t mean I think you’re a bad person, Sage.”

“You’re just trying to find an excuse. You thought you’d hate me. Turns out you might even wanna be my friend.”

“Please, Sage. I can’t protect you when I’m not here.”

“I care what happens to you, even if you don’t. I’m sorry. I’m a pack animal. That’s just how it is.”

“But friendship isn’t about needing things from people. It’s about offering just for the sake of caring, and accepting because you acknowledge the kindness.”

“I promise you, Sage, all these times I told you I didn’t want a friend, a partner…it was to save you from me, not me from you.”

“Not being adequately afraid has always been my favorite thing about you,” he said stiffly.

“You keep my secret and I won’t tell anyone that a werewolf and a poltergeist have you wrapped around their little fingers.”

“There has been little in my life that’s been good, Sage. You have been my salvation. You and P. You’ve both made returning to Downside feel like coming home. If I let you die now, I’m only doing it so I can keep you forever.”

“Good friends don’t watch each other die. They save each other. That’s what you said.”

“But I want to see you live first.”

This was an intriguing read.

I loved the fact that it was an urban fantasy crime novel, different to anything I’ve read before. However, it felt a little too juvenile for me and the plot a little too predictable.

I need to break my record for just commenting on books I dislike, so... I really liked this one. The characters were reliable, distinguishable, understandable and fun to read about. The humor was solid. The slowburn allowed the main characters to build a nice foundation. The ending was a bit obvious to me and kinda funny that the bad guy just stood there and untangled his whole history and masterplan with the main characters, but other than that, I really enjoyed this book and will definetly read the next one!

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of this review.

All the Hidden Monsters
by Amie Jordan is the first in a mystery/detective series unlike any I’ve ever read. Sage is a werewolf and average teenage girl when she happens across the scene of her friend’s murder. Oren is a warlock and paranormal investigator assigned to Lucy’s case. Sage is determined to find out what happened to her friend and in the process land a job with the Arcanum, the paranormal society’s investigative office. Working together, Sage and Oren uncover more murders and soon realize they have a serial killer on their hands.

This was really an interesting concept. If you were to remove all the paranormal/supernatural aspects, this would be your typical murder mystery. However, all the paranormal elements add to the story. Sage lives Downside, an underground city that houses paranormals of all kinds: warlocks, witches, fairies, shifters of all kinds, werewolves, and ghosts. They have schools, jobs, everything you might suspect to run a functioning society. The Upside is above ground where humans live. Very few paranormals make their home there, but werewolves are able to as they live most of their daily life as human with the exception of the full moon. When werewolves start turning up dead, Oren is sent to investigate. It’s Sage who discovers that they’ve been murdered, poisoned first with silver.

Most of the story comes from Sage’s perspective with a few chapters interspersed from Oren’s. Sage is a lonely teen girl, orphaned in the attack that turned her into a werewolf. She’s made her own pack from a poltergeist, two werewolves, gryphons, and a selkie. Her friends are her pack, and she believes she can be happy with that. But the guilt of surviving her family eats away at her. She refuses to turn into a wolf except when required by the full moon.

Oren is a powerful warlock, known for his cruelty throughout Downside. His interest in the case comes when Sage notices the silver in Lucy’s apartment, powdered silver in her coffee to be exact. This would have weakened her and been enough to kill her, but the killer wanted to make a statement. Oren and Sage are two sides of the same coin. Both are struggling with their past and how it affects the present and future. Together, they make a decent team.

Overall, I enjoyed All the Hidden Monsters. The story focuses heavily on the crimes and investigation, but balances the dark with some relationship development between Sage and Oren. I liked seeing how they evolved from almost enemies to tolerant friendship. This is listed as a first in the series, and I’d be curious to read more of Sage and Oren’s investigations.

Content Notice: The publisher lists this book for 12 and up, however I would classify this one for 16 and up. The characters are all adults, including Sage who turns 19 in the book. The murders are graphically detailed, and strong language is used throughout the book. I would not recommend this one for children or teens who are sensitive to violence.

“A grisly murder. A detective warlock with a dangerous past. A girl out of her depth. Can they solve the case?
Sage is an ordinary girl and a werewolf, moving between worlds, desperate to make sense of her life.
When her supernatural friend, Lucy, is found murdered in the human domain, Sage is determined to be part of the investigation headed up by the attractive but arrogant warlock, Oren Rinallis.
Sage is neither magical nor immortal, but she knows right from wrong – and can scent a killer like no other . . .”

This is a fun YA murder mystery fantasy read. I liked the characters especially P!
They all work well together and have decent development. I particularly enjoyed the journey the characters took in accepting who they are and learning to be a little kinder to themselves.

The narration was really good and Kate
Dobson did a great job bringing Sage and Oren to life. The twists in the book I really did not see coming at all and the whole plot comes together well at the end of the book.

There’s a natural world building throughout the book that is really good you get information about the supernatural world in a way that’s easy to digest but informative. I think this way of doing it is great and makes a book easier to read. A great start to a series that can add on as it goes along.

Well, this book was not what I was expecting, but in a very good way. I was a little reluctant to start this because I was afraid I wouldn’t like it because the FMC was young. However, she may be young in years, but she’s miles ahead in maturity. I do want to say it took a little bit to get into the story because I was afraid I wasn’t going to like Oren. However, I stuck with it, and I just loved the way this all turned out. Not only is there a compelling mystery, but there is lovely character growth with just about all the characters. I really can’t say too much, but I was shocked with the ending, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So much so, I can’t wait for the next in the series! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I don’t know why I always find it so hard to write a review for a book that I love, I always imagine it’ll be so much easier and then when it comes to it I have no idea where to start.

I loved everything about this book, it immediately sucked me in and had all the right elements to keep me hooked, supernatural beings, murders needing to be solved, and fantastic characters.

The story is amazing, Sage, a werewolf, discovers her friend murdered and manages to force Oren, a warlock who likes to work alone, to let her help investigate. The world-building was incredible, Sage and Oren live in Downside, the home of most supernatural beings, but they were mostly investigating Upside aka our world, where some supernaturals choose to live. I enjoyed exploring Downside and its differences through Sage, who is part of both worlds.

This made the relationship between Sage and Oren fascinating, two supernaturals who are in some ways completely opposite and closely linked in others. They both feel like monsters and struggle to show people their real selves and at first, they clash. Soon enough though, even with their differences, they grow to respect each other and then form a close relationship.

This is helped along by P the poltergeist who, with no need to be afraid of anyone puts up with no-nonsense, likes to look after everyone and pull them together. I thought all the characters were great but I have to say I have a little soft spot for P and how protective she is over Sage, and her snark.

I have to say that I was kept guessing until the very end about who was committing the murders and why, it was very clever though. There were some other revelations throughout the story that made it very hard to put this book down, it has a lot of action and enough secrets to keep you gripped.

The narration was fantastic, I thought it was brilliant that Kate Dobson was able to have so many distinct voices and accents for the characters, it brought the story to life and helped with the sense of place.

I enjoyed this book so much that I’m hoping that there is more to come from these characters, All the Hidden Monsters is a book that I would highly recommend. Loved it.

4.5 ⭐️ rounded up.

I’m so glad the title & stunning cover enticed me to pick up this surprise little package! All the Hidden Monsters by Amie Jordan is imaginative, pretty gruesome in parts and humorous in others- a thoroughly entertaining read.

I’m going to call it a teen/YA neo-noir fantasy with a nice little side of romance. If that isn’t enough to pique your interest: it’s also set in Manchester.

The Manchester of All the Hidden Monsters has a whole alternate city underneath it full of supenaturals (Downside). Downsiders can -and do -live amongst the human population, Upside, without revealing their true forms, of course. But those who cannot transform or prefer to stay amongst other supernaturals, remain below.

When a woman is brutally murdered Upside, the secret appearance of Downside’s law enforcement agency- Arcānum- shows that all is not what meets the eye. The victim is the first werewolf to be discovered dead in grisly circumstances. This is also where we first meet our main characters, Oren and Sage.

Sage is a self-hating werewolf and friend of the deceased, driven to help investigate the crime- for her friend, and the wider safety of her kind. Infamous and enigmatic, Oren is a surly warlock with an incredibly violent past, if the rumours are to be believed. He works alone as he makes abundantly, and repeatedly, clear. When his ruthless boss insists he gets Sage out of his own hair by giving her a trial, the two are thrust together. See where this is going yet?

Sage and Oren’s volatile relationship isn’t the only important one and a bunch of supporting characters including werewolves, sphynx, more warlocks and an adorable, and very capable, poltergeist bring more to proceedings.

I can see this appealing to fans of YA across several genres (fantasy, crime fic, romantasy, even horror). I read it in a few sittings as it’s very compelling, well-paced and you really come to care about several of the core characters. The romance is slow burn and very funny in parts as well as having some touching, sincere moments. It made me giggle at times because there were a few romantic clichés made funny with the supernatural twist.

I’m looking forward to the next in the series!
