Following the overwhelming critical and popular success of A Man to Slay Dragons, Meagan McKinney triumphs once again with a new romantic thriller that sweeps from the rolling hills of Maryland's money-and-horses set to the perilous midnight playgrounds of New York's sexually bold.

The newspaper headline read "Heiress Jacqueline Blum Missing. Authorities Believe Foul Play Likely". The news hit her niece, Alyn, particularly hard. She had only recently received an invitation from Jacqueline to visit Blumfield, the fabulous estate and horse farm. After years of estrangement, it seemed Jacqueline wanted to finally get to know her only living relative.

Knowing there was probably nothing she could do, Alyn nevertheless headed to Blumfield in hopes that her aunt would return safely home. The sinister cast of characters in her aunt's employ and a dark and mysterious insurance investigator, Peter Youngblood, convince her to begin her own search for the truth about Jacqueline, a search that will lead her to discover the true definition of unthinkable betrayal.

5 stars whenever I read this.
2/18/20 rating- 3.75 stars

I first read this book years ago. It feels almost like a lifetime ago. It must have been closer to the release date of 1998. Reading it again 22 years later shows me how much things have changed while also remaining the same.

This romantic suspense is still just as captivating; The twists and turns are just as thrilling. Alyn is a contradiction. She's cynical and distrusting when it comes to men, but she's hopeful her being present at her missing aunt's estate will help somehow. Her chemistry with Peter Youngblood is sketchy. And as for the sex, it's not very satisfying.

In the Dark really showed me how much I'd changed- as a reader and a person. So maybe not all my trips back to read old favorites will go so well.

Read this because our book club assignment was
to find the most ridiculous looking paperback book out of a local free library. Mission accomplished, but not without a lot of eye rolling & some pain! I gave this book one star because that is the lowest possible rating but if there were something lower than one star, I would give it that rating. This book is complete trash and the worst book I’ve ever read. It makes me really curious about the author… how could you think this was a book worth sharing with the world?
