Be careful when you open the door to strangers...
Successful, happily married former military contractor Samson Chase is spending his time alone while his wife Teresa is on a business trip enjoying beer, takeout, and terrible movies while he works on his latest psychological horror novel.

Warning—mildly revealing spoilers ahead (not that knowing them will ruin nor enhance the reading experience).
Mediocre storytelling written in a format that oozed amateurish sentence structure, word choice and a plot that chartered a course to an epic fail. Characters are cliche and flat, often exhibiting behaviors that rail against the personas as originally developed. A raging soldier with PTSD suddenly sees the light, signs himself into a mental institution and transforms, in short shrift, from a murderous victim, blood thirsty for revenge into a law abiding white knight for justice. Bait and switch promises in the blurb, clearly designed to compensate for less than stellar author choices and a story that nosedives into a wholesome feel-good story that left me slightly nauseous.

This book was extremely difficult to read at times! TRIGGER WARNING! Graphic, detailed male rape. I almost quit reading to the violence and sexual abuse. It ended about a third in, so I was able to solder on. Then, it was all about figuring out the appropriate revenge. I gave it 5 stars because, after the abuse, I enjoyed the story.

MIND. BLOWN. …. 11 STARS! (No spoilers…..)
WHAT did I just finish reading?!?
This is one of the most unique stories I’ve had the pleasure of reading in years. No - ever.
And that’s saying a whole lot. As I generally read 4-9 books per week, every week, & have for years.
All that said, truly, Don’t Open the Door is a “best bet” within the psych thriller genre.
I can’t recall what other reviewers shared about this book, & I definitely don’t want to give too much away. Especially as the shock & awe factor here is very much part of what makes this book so frighteningly good. All the same I do feel there should be at least a brief mention letting readers know that this book is for adults.
My daughter often reads casually over my shoulder. Or I might read aloud from my current book to her before bed. On occasion of course I have to skip sentences, or edit sections for her younger ears. Never before, however, have I had to be so conscious of where her eyes were wandering. I read 85% of Don’t Open the Door with my phone turned far enough out of her line of sight to ensure she couldn’t see a word on the page. The subject matter here is simply geared toward a more mature audience.
Ok, with that matter settled, I can delve into a few of the many aspects that all fit together to make this Cole Baxter story such a phenomenal read!
First, the plot. This storyline is definitely not your average, cookie cutter psych thriller. It is beyond creative. In addition, the twists are numerous. And with each new shocking turn of events, we are drawn further into a story that gets more complex, more layered - culminating in our sharing this mind bending experience with the main character(s).
Of course the “villains” are along for the whole ride as well. But their choices are so …. odd … that it’s close to impossible to know what & who they truly are, & all that motivates them, until much later in the story.
Baxter is truly a master of emotive language writing. This plus his fearlessness in pushing boundaries creates a world where we feel like we’re in just as much of a surreal & inexplicable experience as the main character.
What drives this story, though, is the main character’s internal dialogue & his perspective of events as he’s pushed to the edge of, & way beyond, his own boundaries, morality, & sense of reality.
The main character’s world & the story’s footprint in general begins on a smaller scale. But as we roll along, picking up additional characters & their experiences, new factors which expand our understanding of events, & finally as we get more emotionally invested in the outcome for all involved, well … by the time this book reaches its conclusion it’s hold & effect on us is powerful, & the story is pretty much global in nature.
It goes without saying that Baxter’s fundamentals are all superbly crafted. Character development, world building, dialogue, pacing … the entirety of the foundation & structure of this story is all rock solid. Could use another run-through in relation to editing, however. But the grammatical hiccups here & there do not detract from the enjoyment of this book.
I also want to share how long it took me to complete this story. In general I whip through books, often reading to completion in a few hours or overnight. Not the case with Don’t Open the Door.
This story took about a week start to finish, & that’s a first for me. I do not get my feather’s ruffled easily.
As a child I read King & other horror fiction authors. I prefer apocalyptic, war, & survival titles - the bloodier, more disturbing, true to what life would be like (which is honestly terrifying), & emotionally complex the better. I’m definitely disappointed when a single swear word never passes the characters’ lips. As they often live through extreme circumstances, in the worst of worlds. The “unreality” of never a curse being uttered in these situations just takes me out of the story. I love the real, raw, gritty, & authentic. In Don’t Open the Door I got all the above in spades, squared.
This story took so long to finish because it’s honestly slightly uncomfortable to sit with at times in its intensity. The immensity of depth & conflict within the main character’s own feelings & interpretation of his experience is a lot to emphasize with; to walk hand in hand with him through. Thus I found myself taking frequent, & longer than I’ve ever had to take, breaks in reading.
This is not to say that this book isn’t a pleasure read, as it is. It’s just not the most relaxing story to sink into. It is more adrenaline fueling than a tale that will help you drift off to sleep.
Overall, I absolutely recommend this psychological adventure (nightmare??) to those who enjoy many different genres. It’s a book I know you will each long remember as I know it’s shot up to the top of my ten favorite books to recommend list.
Lastly, author Cole Baxter. I am beyond thrilled I happened upon Don’t Open the Door by chance. I’m excited to read more of his work, starting with my next read!

SORRY NEITHER
I knew right from the beginning of the book what was going to happen as soon as the protagonist opened the door to the two girls. Not only was I right, but the whole premise was ridiculous. I have no patience with someone who makes so many stupid mistakes while trying to escape a situation and this guy made plenty! There is fairly graphic sex which I don’t have much of a problem with, but this just went on and on to the point that I started skipping ahead. I’m sorry to say that I finally gave up and didn’t even finish the book. It was simply too much of a bad thing. I could not tell you how many years it’s been since nice I’ve left a book unfinished. That speaks volumes. I honestly would not recommend this read at all.

I get that a lot of readers don't like this book because of what the drugging and sexual assault these girls put these men through. But we need to have it out there that this behavior doesn't just happen to women. (but those stories are read and people comment how horrible and sad they feel for these women.). This is something that goes on in real life, yet is not reported because of the embarrassment and shame men feel. Also, the fact that no one believes a woman/women can do this to a man and he not help himself out of the situation. There are many ways a female can overpower a man. The editing in areas I can overlook as well as how it could have been wrote a bit better. The story of what they are telling us is what to pay attention to. Not nitpik editing and grammar, or say an amateur wrote it. These men lost so much because of women like this and fought so hard to get their lives back to a somewhat normal state. They will continue to have trust and mental issues over it just as a woman would. I see a lot of people out there need to learn more on what goes on out there and look for signs not only for woman, but men as well. It happens more than you think.I read many comments on the books I'm about to read. When the tables are turned and the woman is in this situation, they feel sad she went through the rape, torments, and blackmail. When it's a man being abused, I see comments that they couldn't finish the book as it was too disturbing. Or how did he let this happen. It's real life and we all need to know it's not just this that happens out there, but more that isn't brought up for us to know about to not only watch for, but to learn how to prevent it from happening to ourselves or others. I agree, it wasn't pleasant to read the horror they went through. But happy they were able to get justice. I wish for all that go through times like this, man or woman, to get the justice they deserve in real life.

I decided to read this even though I saw a movie years ago with Keanu Reeves where ladies showed up at his place just like this book. As I looked back over other books I’ve read by Mr Baxter, one theme is prevalent. He’s got a lousy proof reader. Words are omitted or wrong words are used. Drives me nuts. Story is okay, but it’s been done.

I could not put this book down. As an avid reader, this is the first time in a long, long time that this has happened. An unpleasant topic. I loved the main character where he explained his inner most reactions and thoughts related to the main story line. If reading about sex bothers you, do not pick this book up.

The torture and mental abuse in this book is like nothing I've read before...because it's perpetuated against a man by females, who use the fact that he's a good guy against him. It goes on to describe the fallout he (and others) deal with as men being victimized by women. It truly was one of those books I couldn't put down.

I have recently read a book that I consider to be one of the worst I've ever come across. The story revolves around the protagonist, Samson, who is an author and a former PTSD survivor of the Afghanistan war. His already troubled life takes a turn for the worse when his unpleasant and unlikable wife goes out of town to visit her parents.
During her absence, Samson encounters two young women who manipulate their way into his home and blackmail him into becoming their sex slave for a week. Their justification? They don’t really have one, aside from men suck, and later Daddy issues? Samson, having experienced war-induced trauma and his desire to be Captain America, falls into their trap by believing their story, which is, okay, and somewhat plausible. However, his subsequent actions are unbelievably ridiculous. When they ask him for an alcoholic beverage, he agrees to have a drink with these two scantily clad strangers without considering their ages or the potential dangers of being alone with them in his home. He continues to ignore all common sense by not involving the police at this point although he failingly does so much later in the story to no avail.
The narrative becomes filled with repetitive content, detailing Samson's week from hell with these two psychotic women who seem to derive pleasure from tormenting men. I found myself skipping pages, only to realize that I had missed nothing of substance.
Eventually, it is revealed that Samson is not the first person to have fallen victim to these women's manipulations as their blackmail threats turn out to be false, since they expose the details to his wife and leave him chained to a chair and her having to relieve him. With his life in ruins and his wife leaving him, Samson starts having visions of killing the women. However, he devises a plan to bring them to justice.
Unfortunately, instead of delving into the women's motives, the reasons behind their actions, and how such a horrifying situation could have unfolded, the author dedicates the final pages of the book to a neatly wrapped ending. This left me feeling duped, as I had hoped for a more thorough exploration of the characters.

First book by this author for me. My bestie Joanne found this book and it reminded me of the 2015 Keanu Reeves movie called Knock Knock.
Earned Double Kindle Rewards on this purchase.
The first half of the book was way too unbelievable, even for a fiction thriller. A former military killer can’t escape 2, seemingly average, unarmed, untrained women. I almost gave up. I’m hoping the second half of this book will redeem itself. The second half was better; mental health/PTSD treatment, a committed lawyer and final payback. Could have received a higher rating if the first half of this 400 page book was cut by 100 pages. I would try another read by this author.

Well written thriller
The protagonist faces nearly insurmountable obstacles to overcome and get to a satisfying conclusion. I preferred this book to the author’s other one, the Hollow Husband. Although both are superb books!

Don't Open The Door by Cole Baxter is a suspenseful psychological thriller that will make you look at some situations differently!
Trigger warning: Sexual abuse, torture, mental breakdown.
I believe this book is a great example of discrimination based on stereotypes! Example of how authorities tell us one thing but once it becomes reality no one will listen or do anything!

A book that will knock your socks off
I just finished this amazing book and am beside myself with admiration for this author's ability to tell a story about 6 men who were visited and sexually exploited by two sociopathic rich girls.
Without giving any spoilers, this was a whole new book subject rather than your usual formulatic story blueprint (locked room, serial killer, girls who committed a wrong forced to deal with it 20 years later, etc etc).
A truly great psychological mind f$ck.

Oh man…this latest read from Cole Baxter is downright scary! I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough—and that’s saying something. This one was really gut wrenching…will make you jump at every little sound! The storyline was incredible; the characters were downright scary; the plot twists and turns were truly scary; and while there wasn’t a true HEA…the ending was off the freaking chart! You definitely need to add this thriller to your TBR list today! (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and was totally blown away by it.)

Best Book Ever
How could you not feel sorry for Samson? Lissie and Candi were viscous rich girls who knew daddy could buy their way out of any situation they put themselves in. And Teresa, Samson's wife, don't even get me started on her.
Men being raped is just as wrong as women being raped. It can destroy a person. It destroyed 6 men and trying to get justice from the legal system is a slap in the face.
Read the book and don't judge Samson like I did for his faults at the beginning, try to see it through his eyes!

My first book by this author and now I need them all!!! Samson’s wife goes to visit her parents while he stays home to work on his novel. A knock on the door brings two young women, needing help. They’re stranded and need his phone. He lets them in. Big mistake. He wakes up with no memory of the night before and into a nightmare. His house gets destroyed, things stolen and blackmail videos. A week if torture. If you haven’t read this one, rush out to get it!!

Quite a story!
I’m not quite sure what to say about this book without giving anything away. If I had been asked to write a review on this book after the first couple of chapters, I may have given it 1 star and a bad review but I’m glad I kept reading. It became quite an amazing story with quite an ending. I would recommend it but feel that I have to do so with a warning….if you have a problem with very sensitive matters, ie: rape, this may not be the book for you.

A Lunesta-type reading
Try this before you read this novel. Take a stopwatch, pop two or three Lunesta pills and time how long it takes you to fall asleep. The next night, take your stopwatch and start reading. Time how long it takes you to fall asleep. Odds are 10:1 that reading this novel will put you to sleep in half the time the pills did. No sense at all in the story! And he first 75 or 80 pages are horribly bad.

Best one yet
I have read several books by this author. I must say I enjoyed it the most. The storyline is unique and it does a wonderful job of connecting the main characters and coming out to a great ending5 stars!!
