Good starter books
The sock book has some really good information on structure for both top down and toe up, just with it had talked a little more about swapping patterns or using lace.
The stitch pattern book has a really nice selection of different types of stitch patterns and was laid out in a very easy to read way.

Great basic knitter’s books
Both books contain basic knitting information. First book is good for learning to knit socks. Second book has a wealth of different stitch patterns that a knitter can use to design a scarf, blanket, etc.
