Fate Born: Secrets of Sratta

Rate this book
In the year 3,121, the planet Drammat rules its utopian galaxy with innovation and compassion. The graduates of the Grand Drammatan Academy are the writers of their society’s future.

As the youngest student ever admitted to the Academy, 16-year-old Aria Blake is on edge when her lifelong visions of a teenage boy named Luca become more frequent and intense just before the school year begins.

With mental illness being a thing of the past and a stigma for the rare few who still face it, she’s forced to hide the truth or risk losing everything she's worked for.

When she runs into Luca, alive and in the flesh, at the Academy orientation, her whole world is flipped upside down. It's immediately clear that Luca has secrets of his own, but Aria feels an instant, almost supernatural connection to him. When he eventually opens up to her about his past on Earth - something that should be impossible - Aria learns that Drammat isn't as benevolent as it leads its citizens to believe.

Luca begs Aria to keep his secret to protect both of their lives, but when they uncover a heinous plot on an Academy field trip to the frozen planet Sratta, they must choose between protecting themselves and saving thousands of innocent lives.

Secrets of Sratta is the first installment of The Fate Born Tetralogy, a sci-fi coming-of-age adventure about family, friendship, first love, and finding yourself as you rise to the challenge in extraordinary circumstances.

The Fate Born Tetralogy is for readers of The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, The Pillars of Reality Series by Jack Campbell, and The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

Michelle is a self-proclaimed story addict. She is a sucker for a binge-able show or series of novels, so it’s no surprise that her debut novel is the first in a four-part series. Michelle spends her days wrangling her two young children while simultaneously building the family business—training piano teachers to use their app, Piano Marvel. She spends her evenings writing and honing her craft, except when she’s watching Survivor or binging the latest season of The Last of Us or Stranger Things with her husband. Besides her love for writing and music, she enjoys fitness, volleyball, traveling, time with loved ones, volunteering at her church, anything outdoors, and being in the sunlight as much as possible—something she finds quite easy living in Phoenix, AZ. Despite now calling the desert home, her heart will always belong to the tiny mountain town in Colorado where she grew up.

3.5 stars so it gets rounded up! I was really intrigued by this setting and story.
The world building is so cool, I loved the futuristic space aspect and the idea of a teenage girl being fated with someone else she hasn’t met except for in her visions. It was very interesting and unique.
I did feel the plot was rushed in some areas, particularly that Aria went into hero mode instantly without a strong backstory of why she would immediately want to make things right. But I loved her strong brave character and I felt like the author did very well portraying a 16-17 year old girl with her whims and daring actions.
I love found family, but didn’t feel as connected to the other characters in this book. Hoping the sequel will have more character development!
Altogether, it was easy to read, and I enjoyed the story for the most part. I think this book would definitely appeal to a teen audience for sure!

I loved the idea of the story, I really did. The world building was actually very impressive and the details in all things futuristic we’re my favorite part, so well thought out. I did though feel like the plot was very rushed and in that case it lacked a lot of character development. I needed more from Luca and Arias insane attraction and I didn’t so much feel that connection while reading but was rather told it was there. I wanted more development in her relationship with her friends too, I feel like I didn’t understand how good of friends they all were because there was such little interaction between then in the book. Found families are one of my favorite parts of these types of books and it just lacked the substance for it. I ended up getting sucked in quite a bit at the ending and I cannot wait to find out what happens next, will certainly be reading the sequel!

Waiting for the sequel book and movie series!

In her debut novel, Robison creates a compelling story that leaves you wanting more. Her ability to take teenage characters, develop futuristic worlds, and tackle many current issues, including romance, government conspiracy, religion, and human trafficking is brilliant. She touches on these sensitive topics in a diplomatic and appropriate way for young readers as well as adults, no matter what your views may be. Her ability to describe fictional places and things allows you to be on Drammat and Sratta with the characters. Can't wait for the next books and to see these made into a movie series.

This is probably my favorite book I've read! The story is captivating, and it's so hard to put down once you start reading it. Unlike many books, this story gets better, more engaging, and more intense throughout, even until the very last chapters. I'm obsessed with the characters, and love the idea of Aria and Luca's connection! I can't wait to know what next steps they take to save the universe. I'm so excited for the next book in this series!!

Fate Born is a fast-paced YA Sci-Fi / Fantasy book set in our galaxy with new and intriguing planets Earth has managed to inhabit. We find ourselves on a new world Drammat with a female protagonist - Aria. This story takes place from her viewpoint. We follow her as she begins the next step into her life at the academy. Fate Born: Secrets of Sratta is book 1 in a planned 4 book series.

The world building in Fate Born is one of Michele’s strongest areas. You can visualize the worlds of Drammat and Sratta really well. You get a good sense of the past on Earth and even at Drammat. Drammat is rich in history. I wish we could have spent more time on each planet. The cultural difference between Earth, Drammat and Sratta were interesting. I hope we dive more into some of the politics on Drammat in the future. There is a lot that could be explored with that. 4/5 Stars

I enjoyed the characters in the story but I didn’t have one particular character that was my favorite. Aria was an interesting character at times to follow but I felt for most of the story she was a Mary Sue character. A few times I wish something went a different direction just for the sake of not falling into that trope. Her bond with Luca was quite interesting at first but it seemed like a harder thing to navigate the further along the story went. It’s a tricky and unique ability write. I would have loved to explore more of it or a moment or two where we see them working on this ability together and learning to navigate it and some of the boundaries it has. Maybe we can see more of this in the sequel. 3/5 Stars.

A lot was covered in the plot in 380 pages. The plot itself was fast and maybe at times too fast. I felt like there could have more time explored at the academy as opposed to other areas like the winter break. I wish some of the interesting things that happened during the break had happened at the academy itself. There was a lot of potential there that felt like wasn’t explored. I think back to Harry Potter and how much happens at Hogwarts. That felt missing to me here. Most of the exciting parts didn’t happen around the academy but in the times outside it. The last act of this story touches on a heavy topic we face in real life and you get a sense of the problem and even the conditions the people are living in. I hope it’s explored deeper in other books in this series. It was certainly an interesting direction the story took. I felt resolution at the end was too quick. 3/5 stars.

Michele’s prose is really easy to read. She doesn’t hit you with paragraphs of exposition or over the top descriptions of people, places or things. This book was written for young adults to read and I think the written the language here suits that particular group. 4/5 stars.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. There was a lot of twists and turns throughout. This will appeal well with young adults. One of the strong tropes here is the found family trope. I think it’s one that is done well. I’m curious what the next Fate Born novel will bring and can’t wait to see what will happen to the main characters. 3.5 Stars

Thank you to Michele for providing me with an ARC copy for an honest review!

My teenage self would absolutely have eaten this up. Sci-fi, soul bonds, a rallying cry to fight against corruption, and characters who trust and grow with each other? Excellent. Give me a dozen. Or four, I guess, since I understand that’s how many books are planned for this series. Most excited to see how the plot unfolds now that the world and characters are fully introduced.

(Aside: as an adult, I’m a little annoyed by some of the protagonists’ actions—but honestly? That’s great! They’re teens who ACT LIKE TEENS. Sixteen year old me would have made this series her whole personality.)

I LOVED the story idea a girl living in a perfect world only for her reality to come crashing down because of a boy she’s fated with? And now they have to try to save (or reveal the truth) theirs and other planets? Beautiful! I do think that the writing needed more buffing and refining for it to have received more stars. The writing told more than it showed me as a reader; I wanted to be drawn into the world of the book, feel what they feel, to forget I’m reading and just experience it. Drammat was an amazing planet (by that I mean all the cool futuristic stuff obviously not the government) to read about. In my personal opinion I didn’t love how the relationship of the two main characters started (I don’t want to give away spoilers) but in the same way that some people feel it’s weird for thousand years old vampires to be with a teen girl is how I felt about this relationship. I think this story has an amazing potential simply needs more experience and practice in writing to be a 5 star book in my opinion

I really enjoyed this book! I’m not usually a fan of the dystopian/sci fi genre, but the storyline hooked me. I love a good romantic storyline, but I liked how it wasn’t the “A-Storyline” in Fate Born. It was always there, building up in the background, allowing the reader to watch it brew while being sucked in to the action-packed main plot.

Even if you aren’t a fan of the genre, I recommend giving this one a read.

This was an amazing book! It was the perfect blend of life, adventure, drama, romance, intrigue, and mystery to keep you on the edge of your seat!
Beautiful world building and character development, that kept you interested and in awe.
The characters were amazing, and my favorite would definitely be Aria but Alika was my second favorite. I really enjoyed Luca and liked how loyal and protective he was. And Dima and Aria’s friendship was amazing, just what friends are supposed to be!
I love the whole cast and yes part of my heart even aches for Celeste, who I dearly hope becomes someone greater than her parents have planned, and becomes a good person.
Loved all the action scenes, which were very well written and realistic, and I could see and feel it all take place. This book made me feel what the characters were going through and see their struggles and internally cheer for their victory.
A huge thank you to the author for an early copy of the book to honestly read and review. I cannot wait to have this book on my shelves, and give it a reread. And yes, I also wanted to immediately reread it.

First, thank you Michelle for sending me the ARC of your debut novel. It's a real treat to support other indie authors on their journey.

You can feel the love that the author put into this story. It's action-packed the whole way through. Without giving anything away, I really enjoyed the unique "connection" our two main characters shared and how it added a fun spin to the story. The futuristic world created is also very believable and detailed. You can see all the thought and planning that was put into it.

I do wish there would have been a bit more character development. Aria seemed a little too perfect and a few flaws would have made her more real. I know the author has more books planned, so perhaps this is something to come :). Luca, on the other hand, felt well-rounded and real with his mysterious past. He was easily my favourite character and I can't wait to learn more about him.

I feel like a lot of teens would really enjoy this book. It's adventurous and well-written.

An intriguing world masking a deeper problem faced by characters who seek overall good above their own interests.

I enjoyed this book and the journey it takes the reader on from the beginning of a young girls journey to school and much further beyond. The world was well thought out and easily imagined and the tech was a lot of fun!

I also enjoyed the sweet romance between the main characters. Their connection is unique and I am interested to see more in how that will progress in the series though I wish we’d learned more about Luca! The again, maybe that’s coming in book 2!

Overall, I’d recommend this to younger YA readers with the note that the end does focus in on some deeper topics (although done in a very appropriate way) and that good conversations could be had after reading!

My rating: 4.3*

Fate Born: Secrets of Sratta is an exhilarating journey that had me captivated from the opening sentence to the final page. Michelle's skillful prose strikes a perfect balance between vivid description and concise storytelling, effortlessly bringing characters to life without overwhelming the narrative with unnecessary detail. The plot is a thrilling tapestry of unexpected twists and turns that kept me eagerly turning the pages, while the central romance is refreshingly unique and heartwarming. I found myself deeply invested in the relationships not only between the main characters but also the dynamic camaraderie among the supporting cast. Furthermore, I commend the author for fearlessly addressing real-world issues with sensitivity and grace, seamlessly weaving them into the fabric of the story. Fate Born: Secrets of Sratta is a must-read for fans of dystopian fiction and clean romance.

Get ready to read a fun adventure when you open this book! The descriptions of places and situations are so well described you can picture them in your mind and it makes you feel like you are standing right there with Aria. The futuristic story is very captivating and a fun new way of two people being connected by fate. I enjoyed the good vs evil and trying to figure out what is real and what isn't real and taking a stand for what is you believe. I highly recommend this awesome book that you won't want to put down and will take you on a fun futuristic adventure.

What a novel this turned out to be, the premise was so intriguing and I found myself immersed into the storyline straight away. The characters created were all unique and I loved Aria and Luca, I felt they were created really well and I loved the whole plotline surrounding them.
The world building was fantastic and I really loved the attention to detail, the whole premise of the novel in my opinion was brilliant. I loved all the twists and turns in this story, the action and adventure that ensued was a rollercoaster of a journey.
I'm actually struggling to find the right words for this review because I don't want to give away spoilers and nothing beats "I absolutely loved it". Such an unique story and I can't wait to read more.

4.5 stars!

The story follows main character Aria and a boy named Luca who are at the same college (Academy) together. They have a very unique connection, an intertwined fate with each other which hasn’t yet been fully explained and I’m intrigued to learn more.

Aria’s world view comes crashing down when she realizes her home planet, Drammat, isn’t the utopia she was raised to believe it was. Fate Born:
Secrets of Sratta (book 1 of the series) follows Aria to the planet Sratta on her end of freshman year class field trip. Disguised by a mission to use research and science to save rotting crops to be heroes to the hungry citizens of Sratta, Aria suspects an ulterior motive for the trip but just can’t quite figure out what that is.

WOW I was so impressed by the action scenes and world-building in this book! The author gave more and more as the book progressed, and up to the very last page I was so hooked on the story.

In the beginning, there were some time skips that I wish didn’t jump so far. Though the book gave a lot of information about the history and beginning of the planet Drammat, it seemed like once the characters were introduced and got to the Academy the story really accelerated. The storyline doesn’t need more character interaction to make sense, but I really love the found family made by the students who became friends early in the school year and I would have loved a little more content about the friend group and how they became so close and loyal to each other.

I will absolutely be recommending this book to friends and will be eagerly waiting for book 2 (especially after what feels like a cliff hanger ending and perfect set up and the end of book 1!) As a fan of The Hunger Games and Divergent series myself, I believe anyone who likes those or other YA Dystopian books will very much enjoy this series!

Thank you to Michelle Robison for the free eARC in exchange for an honest review. I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy of this book!

For fans of Divergent and a (CLEAN) version of The Red Rising series!

I absolutely could not put this book down. The world building was fascinating. As an author myself, I'm always drawn in by intricate worlds and the way they work, and Robison did just that. It felt real, and legit, and I believed that it could be a futuristic society.

The characters were 3d, and interacted wonderfully with one another. They also felt like real teenagers, which is always good! I wanted to be apart of the friend group!

The romance was... *chief's kiss🤌🏼* I don't want to give anything away, but there were some very unique and refreshing aspects to the way Robison portrayed the romance between the two main characters. I loved it!

My final note is that the bad guys were CHILLING. I truly hated them, and felt disgusted by their actions. And they couldn't see that what they're doing was evil! These antagonists are greedy, and cold-hearted and Robison made them feel real, which was scary. I hope they all get what's coming to them in fiery, fantastic ways.

In summary, this book made me feel things, and when an author can make me laugh, tear up, call for someone's head, gasp in fear, cheer for a long-awaited kiss, and get sucked in to the action scenes, that's a win in my book. Cannot wait for the rest of this series!!

Robison’s debut YA sci-fi feels like a pretty good start to what l think will be a very long and complex series. It also packs a heavy emotional punch. The premise piqued my curiosity strongly, and I love dystopian sci-fi that shows a perfect world where sinister under workings lurk in the shadows and create mysterious tension and paranoia while reading. Fate Born brings this in droves. While there are a few kinks that need working out, overall, I quite enjoyed reading this one and recommend it highly to YA readers who enjoy SciFi political thrillers with grit and no spice.

My thanks to the author for the complimentary eARC (I also purchased my own copy), for which I give my own, honest opinion.

First I want to thank the author for an eARC of this copy to share my honest thoughts and review.

Now onto le thoughts & rambles lol!

I love love love sci-fi reads, they were my first favorite genre. Specifically YA sci-fi! This book definitely did not disappoint, it hit some of my favorite sci-fi notes.

World-building is phenomenal when executed right and this book served that dish well, the details and creativeness were awesome.

For me I get sucked into a book when I can root for the characters and they drive the plot, and I was very happy with the characters' growth and journey in Fate Born.

My favorite part of the book overall was probably the connection between Aria and Luca. I liked the idea of it and how it worked in the storyline!

Last thoughts: I would definitely recommend to other YA sci-fi lovers!

I was incredibly lucky to receive an ARC of this book. It is Michelle's debut novel and I would definitely recommend.

I think the reason I loved it so much is because it took me right back to the dystopian fiction that I loved in my teens. It's got everything you could possibly want: teenage heroes fighting against their corrupt government, main characters that are literally fated to be together (and they're so cute!), futurisitic sci-fi elements, and tackling a really prevalent issue in the modern world in a way that is understandable to the reader.

The worldbuilidng is excellent, Michelle has crafted entirely new planets in an utterly believable way. and the ending was just cliffhanger-y enough to finish the book in a satisfying way but build anticipation for the sequel, which I can't wait for!

My Summary: Aria is the youngest student ever accepted to the Academy on Drammat. When she begins at the Academy, she meets someone who she believed was only in her head. The boy, Luca, shows her that the universe isn’t what Drammat paints it as, and when Aria begins investigating deeper, she discovers many horrible secrets.
The book presents and supports a difficult yet important topic.
The main character had a great balance of skills and flaws. She was able yet made relatable mistakes, and she thought through getting into a relationship, which made the romance emotional, thoughtful, and realistic.
The book had suspense, action, a bit of mystery, friendship, and takes on several important issues.
I really loved listening and didn’t want to stop.

Overall: A thrilling, complex, emotional race to stop evil from ruining the galaxy.

Definitely recommend! Only start reading this book if you have a free afternoon or evening: once you start it’s impossible to stop, I was hooked for HOURS!

The writing pulls you in immediately- the environment, characters and the storyline are all told so vividly, I was really able to ‘see’ this world that had been created.

I was kept glued to this book for many reasons, but the connection the lead characters had was infectious and something I couldn’t wait to see develop over the course of the book (series).

The only thing I’m mad about is having to wait for another book as I am really looking forward to continuing reading this series…it’s really good, very well written and a very fun and engaging read.

I really got hooked into the story of this book and I’m a big fan of both sci-fi and dystopian. I liked the main beats of the plot and got hooked into the telepathic connection thing. I do think that this book maybe tried to do too much which made it fast paced but some of the events weren’t totally flushed out or reasonable. I feel the same with the characters. There were too many, and I ended up not feeling a strong attachment to anyone. I couldn’t tell who was important and who was just going to be in a scene or two. I would have rather there have been fewer character and more development in the relationships between the characters. Give me time to fall for them, and give them time to bond with each other.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have received an Advanced Reader's Copy (ARC) of this book, and I must say that it is well worth the time invested to sit down and read it.

From the very first page, I found myself fully engrossed in the story, and with each passing moment, I became more invested in the plot and its characters. I was speeding through the pages, eager to unravel every twist and turn.

This book is a prime example of a page-turner. I was so engrossed in the story that I didn't want to put it down. So much so, I started the book before bed and ended up staying up all night to read it. It's one of those books where you find yourself yearning for more as you near its end. I can't wait to see what Michelle has in store for us next!

Really really good! Definitely a page turner from start to finish. I think it took me 3 days to finish, and that’s only because I had to take breaks to feed my babies😂 Similar vibes to divergent/hunger games but with a very unique and compelling storyline. Humorous, witty and engaging throughout while maintaining a sense of reality. The last 3rd was especially good- the author takes on some enormously difficult topics and describes them realistically while not making it too heavy for teenage readers. The ending leaves you with a sense of closure on one hand and also frustration on behalf of the characters on the other hand and will absolutely leave you anxious for the next book in the series! Would definitely recommend, and very excited for the next book!

This book was so well written. It captured and held my attention the entire time! The story line is captivating and informative. Michelle is very descriptive and she helped me feel like I was actually seeing everything I read. It’s hard to believe this is the first book she has ever written and published! This book is a great balance of action, adventure and romance, along with being informative about real world issues. Michelle also does really well with keeping her story clean and appropriate for teens and young adults. You won’t want to miss out on this novel! I’m so excited for the next 3 books of this series to be released!!

Anyone who loves Sci-fi should absolutely read this book! I will be recommending this to everyone I know. The way the worlds are flawlessly built allowed me to live in the same world as the characters when I was reading. The author gave beautiful imagery. The unique connection between the two main characters is one I’ve never seen before and it was executed so nicely. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I read. This was a hard book to put down. The plot was sic-fi fantasy, but I loved that it integrated some very real and important issues from our own society. I cannot wait for the second book to see what happens next!

This book has everything you want in a captivating sci-fi story- political intrigue, academia, interplanetary travel, and found family to name just a few! Aria and her crew have such a wholesome dynamic. The intricate world building and well-paced plot pulled me right in. And the ending has me counting down the days until book 2 comes out! Oh my goodness, this book was so good and so much fun to read! I could hardly set it down after I started the first chapter! It was such an attention grabber and was very well written. I loved the storyline and the way the author portrayed each character; a book is so much more interesting to me when I feel like I know each character really well and the author did a great job at doing just that. I’m already so excited to see how the story continues in the next book! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves suspense, mystery and heartfelt love.
