Oh my glob, this was such a great story!
I loved Marceline's family and the backstory about her axe.
Her dad was great!

Also, the nightosphere was WILD before her dad took over:

It was good story between jake n Marceline relationship together. They're mission is to get Marceline bass or guitar before her concerts but turns out things take a turn. Marceline headed to trade seller to witch to her boyfriend n now he's performing using Marceline bass or guitar. Marceline thinks her dad sell her guitar but turns out her dad give her another new guitar or bass for her gift but Marceline decline it. She likes her old one better than new one so she let her father have it. Extra story about lumpy space princess with the other princesses.

Stuff I Read - Adventure Time OGN Vol 3: Seeing Red Review

Ah, Adventure Time. Between the main series and the constant specials and mini series, there still isn't enough to fill the lumpy hole inside me for more from the setting. Luckily the OGNs being put out are great and provide an amazing taste of Adventure Time while shining the spotlight on characters other than just Finn and Jake. That said, this volume does feature Jake the Dog quite heavily, though it focuses much more on Marceline in her quest to retrieve her lost guitar.

Teaming up Jake and Marceline was an interesting choice, but I think it was a great one. Jake's flippancy works well with Marceline's own rough and tumble ways, and seeing Jake in the Nightosphere and out of his element was fun, especially in the scenes in the hotel. The great thing about Adventure Time, and something that this OGN definitely captures, is the mix of childl-like innocence and dark, totally adult material. The little bellhop at the hotel is incredibly creepy, but also adorably hilarious.

The story in this volume is interesting as well, complicating the relationship between Marceline and her dad a bit and offering a more in-depth look at the Nightosphere. It expands the mythology of the show while also providing the characters that are already familiar. It does come across as a bit cheesy, especially the ending, but it does have a fair message and it is a lot of fun. It might not be the newest thing in the land of Ooo, but it is a satisfying installment with great art and a solid voice.

And of course the back-up story with LSP is amazing. Oh MY GLOB!!! It is perhaps even better than the main story. It so perfectly captures LSP in all her lumpy glory. It takes a bit more artistic liberty than the main story, but in doing so it manages to be even more adorable. It really is just a lot of fun that had me laughing throughout.

And in the end I don't have much negative to say about this volume. I might not like it as much as the Playing with Fire volume, but this one definitely earns the name Adventure Time and provides some great entertainment while revealing a bit more about the characters and history of the setting. And with nothing more to say, I will leave this volume with 8.5 awesome purses out of 10.

2025 EDIT: Yet another great Marceline comic, this time set (almost) entirely in the Nightosphere, and partnered with Jake the dog. So funny and cute!

Marceline rocks with her bass guitar/battle-axe!

If only the comic was in colour. It is titled 'Seeing Red', for crying out loud!

Final Score: 4/5

Original Review:

A fun, clever, hilarious and utterly bonkers 'Adventure Time' comic that's also kind of touching.

'Adventure Time: Seeing Red' stars Marceline and Jake in their time in the Nightosphere (the Underworld, or hellhole, basically, only nuttier). Their adventure is Marceline's family-get-together-turned-quest to find her missing legendary bass guitar/axe. There are: rock bands, witches, video game aesthetics, table tennis, a little male bellhop who's romantically obsessed with Jake, and all around spooky, bony stuff. Marceline does have a strange, complicated yet sweet relationship with her demon dad.

The only thing really letting 'Seeing Red' down is the lack of colour. The comic is in black and white, which is jarring to see in anything to do with such a colourful and vibrant franchise as 'Adventure Time'. And it's called 'Seeing Red'! I don't quite get it.

But if you can let that slide, 'Seeing Red' is a must for 'Adventure Time' fans, and Marceline fans. Her life doesn't always have to revolve around Bubblegum - she can work great with any character.

Final Score: 4/5

What a wonderful, happy-making book. I love Marceline, and any chance to learn more about her is a chance I'll take. Her relationship with her father and extended family is explored with such care and thoughtfulness. There's no pat resolution or silly insta-forgiveness, but there's growth of characters and relationships, and so, so much heart. Bonus points for Jake's continuing, vocal feminism and open-mindedness, too. Love that guy.

The short that follows, 'LSP's Purse,' is worth the price of admission on its own. It's beautifully illustrated. The story neatly avoids cliche (but is totally relatable even if purses aren't your coveted thing of choice) and shows off the confidence and determination that make LSP such a great character.

Oh my glob! I love Marcelline. This one is called "Seeing Red" and it was fabulous. I laughed all the way through it. Let's go get some tacos and play laser-tag! Also, love the LSP purse adventure at the end. Paneling of that feature was smartly done with the what is happening to LSP as multiple panels on the left, and how elsewhere was a single panel on the right of each page! LOVED IT ALL!

Oh my Glob! Here Marceline and Jake have their own adventure in search of her legendary battle axe bass. A good way for them to bond; and for Marcy to get over her issues with her dad. I loved meeting more new characters in the Nightosphere (like the Bell Boy, Svitz, Adelaide, Rick Hammich, etc.). Along with the humorous short about LSP questing for the perfect purse

Marceline and Jake go in search of her missing bass, its secret origin being revealed en route, in a story which gets surprisingly heartwarming towards its close. Also features a demon bellhop whom I could hear only as Peter Lorre.

This was way too stilted and confusing to make for a coherent plot. The panels didn't work cohesively together, and while the jokes were on par with how the show usually goes, it didn't have the same flow.

I'm always in a constant state of ambivalence about whether I should count comics on my goodreads. Do they count as books read? Yeah, I guess... but, also... no? But I decided in the end that the main reason I review and count books on here is to keep track of things and I want to keep track of comics too. So here ya go, Goodreads goal, a super cute graphic novel featuring Marceline the Vampire Queen.

I like Adventure Time, I do. I just think maybe at this point it's gone on a little long. A lot of the stories this days are... negligible. As if they just throw some characters together and see what happens. However, I am fairly sure I would watch Marceline brushing her teeth for five minutes straight if need be. I find her delightful. So when I saw this little graphic novel I had to give it a go. And it was pretty great.

Having left her ax bass in the Nightosphere the last time she was visiting her dad, Marceline travels back with Jake to get it... only to find it missing. From there we meet some old friends as she searches it out in time for an Abadeer family reunion.

'Seeing Red' is the third book in the black & white series of Adventure Time Original Graphic Novels.

This one follows Marceline and Jake. Jake is at a loose end because Finn must help Princess Bubblegum with something and Jake can't. So when Marceline asks him to hang out, he's there! Marceline has lost her axe - her beloved bass guitar - and needs to travel to where she must have left it, her father's place. Marceline and Jake go on a convoluted hunt for who has the axe now!

A cute instalment but nothing overly special. :)

Question: Why is it called "Seeing Red" when there is literally no color in the book? Well, that's... weird...

This is pretty repetitive. Marceline and Jake go on some weird journey to find her axe-shaped bass guitar. They meet random people along the way that we definitely never see again. Look, as much as Marceline might as well be one of the show's best characters, even she can't save this book. It's somewhat clever but not close to the main comic series. Over all, meh. But the ending is pretty heart felt. I'm sorry, but this isn't it, chief.

While a lot of the Adventure Time comics aren't canon, they still can provide a lot for the series as a whole, and Marceline comics are some of my favorites of the series in general.

This one provides insight on her backstory of how she got her axe, and some insight in to her dad as well.

Each Adventure Time comic book does so right by the characters and love for the series as a whole, and it generally shows in every comic I've read.

Just a really fun and sweet time! As always it’s nice to get different peeks into what could have been- the backstory with Marceline and her father here being contradicted by later episodes of the show and the Enchiridion book- but it’s a heartwarming twist on their dynamic. And Marceline and Jake are a fun duo we didn’t get nearly enough of in the show. It makes for a very enjoyable read from start to finish.

A cute and breezy Adventure Time story featuring the BEST CHARACTER (fite me) and revelling aptly in her brand of punk rock girl power and debilitating dad issues. Which, penned by one of the foremost lady-types in comic books right now, makes for an excellent graphic novel.

Also, Jake is there.

The kind of fun, funny and heartfelt story I've come to expect from Adventure Time these days. A great (if very quick) read for any Adventure Time fans, especially Marceline fans (and Jake's there too, in all his awesome Jake-y-ness)

Okay was bummed about the no color thing. But DUH Kendra I guess there’s no color in the night! But I liked getting to see more of Marceline and her dads relationship. And her fun song about her dad eating her fries.

Finn is busy on a project with Princess Bubblegum, so Jake accompanies Marceline on a quest to retrieve her axe from the Nightosphere. This was okay, but not very ADVENTUREY.

And, oh my GLOB! Where's the color?

What a stunning cover.
Marceline and Jake were a surprising duo to root for, but I enjoyed it greatly. So far this comic has been my favourite out of the bunch.
And how to forget the iconic fries song, to boost.

This was a blast.

Beautifully drawn and an enjoyable foray into my favourite queer vampire's backstory. There's a lot of "I left small town America bc it wasn't big enough for me" vibes and I really enjoy it.
