To write a novel was a dream of mine since I was a child. Life, my practical nature, and self-doubt got in the way, so it was decades later that an opportunity to write finally presented itself. I honestly didn't think I had what it takes to write a full-length novel, but once I faced the blank screen and my fingers touched the keyboard, everything disappeared except my characters and their surroundings, and suddenly I knew that this was what I was born to do.

Since then, I've written many books and have enjoyed some positive reviews, but sometimes, when I stop to reflect, I'm still amazed that I'm living my dream.

Had I read this book first I would not have continued reading subsequent books of this series. Time for me to pull the plug. It would not be fair of me to describe the action and events, but I have had enough now. Perhaps the word unseemly would apply.

I'm becoming turned off by this series. The plot was great (as usual), but the progression of Jason Redmond's character is disappointing. The character is becoming "perfect," judgemental, arrogant, and obnoxious in his dealings with Haze. Long gone is the broken man, scarred by the traumas of war, who only wants to do good in his part of the world. Meanwhile, Haze's character hasn't left the "country bumpkin" persona behind.

The Redmond and Haze books are an auto-buy for me. I love Jason Redmond and Daniel Haze. They are such true friends and always have each other's back. The historical murder mystery element is icing on a very delicious cake Errr, read. LOL

Inspector Haze and Lord Redmond have a new baffling case!
Lucinda Chadwick aka now Lady Lucinda Foxley requested their assistance in the murder of two young boys John 6 and Bertie age 4!
Both boys were poisoned and no apparent motives as they were sons of Lord Foxley cook!
But Fox Hollow the mansion has several secrets that are are very slow to be revealed!
The servants of the house are related to the current and former master of the house!
These Lords think nothing of sleeping with their servants and getting them with child!
When there is another murder of an abusive husband and father by poison it becomes a race against time to save the lady and master of the house!
It does not seem possible but maybe there are two murderers in this small household!
The lady of the house is pregnant and due to deliver her babies! She is fearful she won’t survive the birth! Who would stand to gain from the deaths of the children and a drunk husband? These can’t possibly be connected? Can they?
Nonstop action, keeping you on the edge of your seat! Changes in the Redmond household and hopefully a reunion with Inspector Haze and his precious daughter ! Love this series! Bravo!

Another winner

This series just keeps getting better. Had no clue who the murderer was. Nice to see all the old favorites back.

Accidental or premeditated?

Two sweet little boys were murdered. Were they the real target or had they just gotten in the way of the murderer's planned victim? When there's another murder, is it connected? Was it the same killer? Haze and Redmond have a very puzzling mystery in front of them. Are they looking for a cold-blooded monster who deliberately killed two children? What reason would anyone have for doing something that evil? Hopefully it was just an accident. If it was, will the real target be next? I really liked this book. There were enough dodgy people who could be a killer and lots of reasons why someone would kill, so it will be difficult to find the killer with what Redmond and Haze consider to be the best reason. I just wonder, though, what's going on in the story line. Redmond seems to be the "smart guy" in this book. Yes, he is the one with the formal education and really good intuition. He's smart and he could be a very successful detective if he wasn't a doctor. But Haze isn't dull. He's the guy who's part of the successful team. He's solved a lot of cases. He's more staid and conservative than Redmond, but he's not stupid or dull witted. But it seems like the author is saying that Haze, by himself, wouldn't be where he is if he hadn't gotten Redmond as a partner. Ransome tells Haze that some of the men do think that about him, because Redmond is some kind of "secret weapon" that has helped Haze get ahead. And when the case is close to being solved, it seems that Haze is not able to put the clues together that Redmond has already figured out. Haze seems to be just tagging along on Jason's case. I'm confused about their partnership; it doesn't seem like it's on an equal footing anymore. Anyhow, come what may, I will be reading the next book.

Death, innocence, and sins of the fathers

I loved this installment of the historical whodunit series staring Captain Jason Redmond and Inspector Daniel Haze. Like the other books in the series, it had a layered storyline, an intriguing mystery, surprising plot twists, and suspense. I was equally desperate to read it all at once to solve the mystery and also to savor it and make it last. Jason and Daniel are portrayed as real, relatable and complex people who have flaws and scars, but are really just trying to do their best as messy humans. Captain Jason Redmond is an American surgeon who inherited his British grandfather’s estate and title. He is living with his wife and infant daughter in London while he teaches, volunteers at the hospital and performs autopsies for the police. Daniel Haze is a detective inspector for Scotland Yard. He is widowed and lives with his young daughter. Jason and Daniel are good friends and their different approaches often complement each other while solving cases together. They are once again attempting to solve a difficult mystery when two young boys are found dead in a trunk. The location is outside Scotland Yard’s jurisdiction but near the small town where they previously lived and the baronet asked for their help. The investigation into the deaths leads Daniel and Jason to unlikely places, dead ends, plot twists, secrets, and surprising revelations. As always, there are smaller side personal story arcs and social commentary which enrich the main plot line and give the characters greater dimension. I love this series and these characters.

I have been a fan of Irina Shapiro's books for the past few years, since I discovered the first one. The combination of Doctor Jason Redmond, American, but rich hereditary Lord through his father's family, and Daniel Haze, who started in book 1 as a country bobby, limited in his experience, expertise and ambition until he and Lord Redmond teamed up as a crime solving team. Daniel is now a Scotland yard inspector and in spite of series of personal tragedies has grown so much personally and in confidence that his former friends and acquaintances remark on it. As usual in this author's books, the investigation was convoluted, the final denouement unexpected. As I usually find when American authors write English historical stories, there are minor inaccuracies, in particular in the American speech patterns and terms used even by servants, such as the game Hide and Seek, given the American version Hide and Go Seek. That doesn't spoil my enjoyment of the stories. I did have a little chuckle when in one scene, a character "Opened the door of the crypt and entered a passage". Having read Ms Shapiro's excellent series The Passage some time ago, I was half expecting a similar outcome to the one in the first book in that series! The tantalising sample of the next adventure for Jason and Daniel has me impatient to read it!

I didn't know there were thirteen books before this, and now I definitely won't read any of them, because I didn't enjoy it at all. I thought this was a dark thriller, I mean two children being murdered must be like this, but it ended up being like one of those shallow Holmes stories, with an investigation with the maid and the housekeeper, an affair behind the crime, and the book became like a Christmas mystery, not a thriller, mystery, and crime novel for adults as if it wasn't two children who were killed!
The final chapter, which uncovers the mystery of the crime and confronts the killer; it was so childish.

I listened to half of it to finish it quickly, but my god, it was worse. The British accent gave me a headache, and I couldn't understand a lot of the words unless I heard them more than one time. It was a bad experience.

What made me read it in the first place was the cover and the summary, and this was the only good thing in the book.

Another great addition to this series. The twist and turns kept you thoroughly entrenched in this one. I had a slight inkling as to who the killer of the boys was, but then I kept changing my mind. I love it when you have to wait to nearly the end to know whom the actual killer is. Redmond and Haze are specifically requested to look into the death of two little boys, whose bodies are found dead in a trunk. Redmond determines the little ones were poisoned, so the hunt begins among the residents and staff on the estate. Matters get more complicated when the gardener turns up dead from poison, and Daniel is poisoned also but survives. This was a thoroughly intriguing read. Shapiro hits another one out of the park. Bring on the next book, I'm totally ready for it.

Another solid entry in the series. The mystery was satisfying and not an obvious killer. My one complaint is that I am not a fan of the slowly disintegrating relationship between Redmond and Haze. Redmond’s unspoken criticism of Haze seems out of character. I have to wonder if the author is setting up the series to dovetail with state of their friendship in The Gilded Lily. I found that I disliked Redmond’s unspoken criticism of Haze and felt it didn’t really fit the friendship/relationship that had been built between the two men in the series so far.

I'm still enjoying this historical series, but as others have mentioned, I would like to see more development on the part of Dr. Jason Redmond. He has become less of a flawed character and more of a stand-in phenomenon. Daniel Haze remains as the lesser partner, but in many ways, Haze is more interesting.

Although, I haven't reviewed all of the books I've read in the series, I continue to look forward to the adventures and hope for a bit more equality between Redmond and Haze.

I want Redmond and Haze to go on forever

I sometimes get tired of a series and their characters, but not Redmond and Haze. I adore these murder mysteries, the lives of the detectives and their families. There are always twists to keep me engaged and clues to keep me thinking. I get lost in the story as if I’m there with them. The books have humor and pathos. They are clean and without gratuitous content. Bravo on another outstanding story, Irina Shapiro!

Love this series.
Post Civil War England calls Dr. Jason Redmond to look into estates he had inherited. He decides to stay and becomes involved with helping solve murders with Constable Daniel Haze. Fourteen books into the story includes myriad characters, detailed settings, and intricate cases, some more dangerous than others. Highly recommend!

Avid Reader

I sat up into the wee hours of the morning reading this book. Another Redmond and Haze book that was well done. Who would want to murder two little children? You needed to ask another child to get the answer, and her mother was not allowing anyone to talk to her. If she had, the mystery would have been solved much sooner. There were three murders and two murderers.

Incredible Murder Mystery!

What an incredible Murder Mystery, a true page turner! Two small boys found lol murdered, was it a horrible mistake, why would someone murder such innocence? Next is the abusive husband, was he the intended victim all along? Redmond and Haze are at it again! I highly recommend it.
Thank you,

Seemed Unsolvable

Irina Shapiro is one of my favorite authors. I love the pace of her novels. They are hard to put down. Further, her characters are complex and well drawn. This mystery was so original that I never would have guessed! Maybe I am too innocent! Of course I adore Inspector Haze and Dr. Redmond. No one better hurt either of them!

Great story. I didn't see the ending coming

I have enjoyed every book in this series, and this is the best. The story was paced perfectly, and every time I thought I knew the solution, something else happened. I was totally surprised by the ending. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Lady Foxley of Fox Hollow requested Redmond and Haze to investigate as the bodies of two young children had been discovered. The young sons of the cook, John 6 and Bertie 4, were found in a chest in one of the bedrooms. Redmond suspects poison but by whom and why.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery

Excellent as always! I love this series, and this newest book did not disappoint! It is a true page-turner, and I finished it in a day! I am very good at figuring out mysteries, but this had me fooled right to the end. I can't wait for the next installment of Redmond and Haze!

I’ve really enjoyed this series, but the murder of two children was too dark for my taste as was the resolution. There was no sense of relief or satisfaction at the apprehension of the murderer, and the end was mostly depressing with only a glimmer of light. I won’t read another.

The best plot this author has done so far. Typically I can figure these out but this one got me. It had a curious ending that was fair.

Sometimes Shapiros books can be a little out there in theories, but this was reasonable without being obvious.
