The Black War Begins

Rate this book
I am Darque Aalanna Grifynn, more often known by my Battle Name, The Dragon. I am a member of the Warrior Brotherhood, the most elite fighting force in all of Kadoor, and the youngest ever to hold the rank of Second to the Battle Commander.
The Warriors of the Dragon Clan have kept the peace since the Last Holocaust, which devastation was wrought by an evil Dragon known as The Black. All Races were affected, both Magic Bearing and Mankind, and those who did not die outright, suffered great hardships. To support their dwindling numbers some were forced to Retreat ‘til the world healed. Having the shortest lifespan, most of Mankind lost their memories of the other Races and relative peace has reigned for so long the Evil One was all but forgotten, even by the Magic Bearers themselves.
Now the Hoard is once again gaining strength and we have uncovered disturbing evidence that The Black may have secured an alliance with King Shytin. To help in our efforts, the Highland Dragons came out of seclusion to bring forth their most ancient Magic. This we used to create the LifeBond ‘tween Warrior and Dragon and together we defend our people and our world. But we are greatly outnumbered and ‘twould be suicide to openly oppose the King. With so many living in blissful ignorance of the return of The Black, we must convince them to join the Resistance.
We did not seek this War, ‘twas thrust upon us, but failure is not an option. The Dragon Clan must adapt or lose to The Evil One. ‘Tis my destiny and I embrace it. I will not, cannot allow us to lose, for this time ‘twill be our total annihilation.

This book is a fantasy to read. The characters in the story had a nice connection and beautiful growth throughout the story. This was the first book I read by this author. The book was very lovely. Of course, there were some details that I would have liked to have been addressed more, such as some secondary characters.
Overall, I was extremely pleased with the novel, and I cannot wait to read the next to find out what happens to several key characters. If you like Dragons, times of old, and uncovering a conspiracy, then I highly suggest you add this to your list.

The Black War Begins by Derrien Reylea is the story of a kind of dragon warrior who has to protect her world ( Yes she is a very young girl and very believable character that just tugs your heartstrings with her tragedy and bravery and compassion) on the brink of a devastating war not having learnt any lesson from the previous war. The world that has been reconstructed by the author is magical and vivid and the story is interesting and binding.
But the descriptions are sometimes too long and too many characters make the plot convoluted.Still the events make you turn the page
the book is good, binding but would have been a page turner and gripping if it had been a little shorter
Thanks @BookTasters for the chance to read this book

Making a new journey is hard. For Darque, only 17 winters old, that’s especially true. Her beloved world is on the brink of a large scale war, and humanity was one of the last to know about it. But when dragons came into her village, they had no choice but to acknowledge the truth. Now, it would be up to Darque, her beloved dragon and partner, Gunnarr, her family, and the warriors under her father’s, and soon to be her’s, command.

Darque is forced to confront many difficulties at a young age. Of course, in her era and station, she would already be considered an adult. But if I was in her boots, the idea of everything either succeeding or failing due to every choice I made would send me in a tailspin. Thankfully, Darque doesn’t have to confront this darkness alone.

I’ll admit it: I accidentally read the third book instead of the first one. So when I was reading this book, I was like, “Nope. The struggles aren’t ending here”, and “C’mon! I know who the traitor is! He’s! Right! There!” But unfortunately I can’t do a Blue’s Clue’s and jump inside the book. However, Darque and Gunnar did very well with what they had. I was also a little disappointed that I didn’t get to see more of Cali and the Krakken captain, but then I remembered that they will have their moments in other books. Right now, it was time to learn about Darque and how she began her first steps in creating peace.

Oh, and no spoilers, but I think Shayla was one of my favorite characters in the story. I practically gobbled up her backstory. If you want to find out what it is, grab this book and enjoy the journey!

And I know that I asked this on my last review, but I’ll ask it again: Where the Scott Fitzgerald can I get a dragon?!

Warning: There are graphic scenes, so view with caution.

I've always loved tales about dragons! This one is without a doubt, my favorite! The dragons come vividly alive! While respectful of traditional tales, this one gives the dragons a new dimension! You are drawn in, until you feel a part of the story, you revel in their triumphs, you feel the sting of their losses! Around every corner, there is a new unknown. As each mystery is solved, more spring up to replace them! It's a wonderful tale of friendship, family, adventure, romance, and magic! An ultimate battle of good and evil, where the fate of humans and dragons will be decided!! An amazing story, I couldn't stop reading it! 5 STARS!!

The story is filled with dragons, magic and some humans, is a perfect treat for a fantasy genre lover.
Few dialogues and more descriptions make an easy read but some places l the description gets unnecessary and too much. It even gets repetitive.
What the author could have put to good use instead of repetitions and unnecessary details is that give us time to absorb in new characters.
With the multitude of characters being introduced, it gets confusing very fast and I would have loved some space to get acquainted with them better.
Plot wise the story is excellent, with better editing it could have been a good book as well.

It took me a while to get into this book. Mostly because I was surprised by how poetic the authors style is. But once I did I thoroughly enjoyed it. This novel is entertaining as hell. Highly recommended.

I read about 300 fantasy books a year and I have to say this was a breath of fresh air. The author's use of language to authenticate the setting was something I continually admired. I actually learned a lot (like a candle mark being an increment of time). I've read several books regarding dragons but no one brings their entire race to life like Derrien Relyea. I cannot wait to continue this series.

As much as I wanted to enjoy the story, it just fell short for me in the end. There was just too much worldbuilding and it was just a little too confusing to keep track of what was going on the majority of the time. And not too much happened during this book, but when things did start happening, it was pretty good.

This was an intense and unrelenting read, bursting with lore and hidden complexities, and while I took some time adjusting to the language used, I found that it was well worth the effort. There were times when it dealt with some painful subject matters, and as such I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for everyone. But if you’re looking to immerse yourself in a world of high fantasy darkness and your suggestions list is running low, I’d happily encourage you to give “The Black War Begins” a try.

I am a huge fan of any books with dragons (and this one is filled to the brim with dragons) and magic. I love the concept of the dragons and humans coming together to fight against evil forces. The writing is up to par, and I felt like I was in a different world because of the language and the way in which the author set up this world. The characters are unique and I thought that making Darque a warrior in this story makes her relatable and likable as a character.
There were times where I wished some things were made a bit clearer (like the life bond between warrior and dragon). Sometimes I got the characters mixed up or I wish the author would have slowed down the plot so that I could absorb the information. Epic fantasy usually has a lot of moving elements, which is fine, but I do wish that the authors could slow down the pacing and leave room for readers to ease into the world instead of diving right in.
Overall, I think this story would be enjoyable for anyone who loves epic fantasy and is obsessed with dragons.

I couldn't connect to the new universe the book created and I didn't get attached to the characters so I didn't feel the need to read more and more about them. I felt like sometimes the sentences and the pages felt too long and weren't going anywhere... Certainly it wasn't the book for me. It's written in a really interesting way and I do feel like I didn't lose my time at all, I don't regret reading it... But I wouldn't read it again.
This review, however, is based on my personal opinion and I still think this book deserves a chance.

The story was full of detail. Some things were repeated or over explained, but the story was intriguing. I finished it in a matter of days even with my busy schedule. It's full of fantasy and one of the main characters is a dragon they don't just occupy the background. In the end all the little strings are tied into a bow with one of the tails leading for the next squeal. There wasn't much dialogue within the book, but there are times when I didn't miss it with the way the story is told.

Welcome to the world of Kadoor. The land has regressed into clan communities that are ruled by a distant King, and rumors of a dark evil are spreading across the land... Sound familiar? The Black War Begins fits well into the high fantasy trope, and along the way you'll discover dragons, magic, prophecy and even more creatures of myth and legend. The setting is done quite well, Drekinn (Darque's home village) is vibrant and easy to lose yourself in. In the healer's den, or the kennels, or in the commanding battle commander's town hall. The far away city Evantyrr looms on the horizon, both geographically and portentously. An opportunity arises for the members of the Dragon clan, to perhaps bind themselves to the powerful thought forgotten race of Dragons, that may just be the chance they need to save themselves from the oncoming surge of darkness across the land...

I liked this novel. I didn't love it. The dragons are done well. Beautiful descriptions of anatomy and accounts of how dragons navigate themselves in the world of humans. But what was really difficult for me was falling in love with the characters. Darque is just... good at everything. The daughter of a prophecy, secretly magical, bonded to the biggest and most powerful dragon, beautiful, smart, et cetera et cetera. Every enemy she comes across in the book she either bests in a relatively short combat, or literally scares off simply by staring into their eyes. Storrm is similar. Slightly less powerful than Darque, but still head and shoulders 'better' than the other characters in the book. She and Darque rarely struggle. The furthest they are challenged is by the awesome burdens of their immense power and status.

In one tense scene in the novel, Darque is on her way to rescue a dragon and rider. The rider has been utterly savaged, on death's door, and the dragon is lacerated and bleeding all over. They are against three black dragons, and I thought holy cow, we might get a serious stand off here, Darque might be pushed to her limit, the dragon and rider might seriously be at risk. But in a single paragraph, Gunarr and the other dragon breathe fire and kill all three dragons at once. The rest of the chapter is seemingly dedicated to showing off how much the wounded dragon cares for her rider.

The romantic subplot doesn't really go anywhere, which is a shame because it's one of the novels more compelling points. There's a slow build up, even some parts where, let's say, the intimacy almost drenches the pages. But it never resolves, and while I know we are in a series, some acknowledge of this relationship before the end of the book would've been nice.

Some of the speaking conventions grew on me, some didn't. LifeBond and Holds and Casting I thought were good, but some other ones (looking at you kaafy, Battle Blood, sennight) don't really land. The twist at the end of the novel feels in some ways set up well by the previous plot threads, like the healer and battle commander's relationship, but in others doesn't really land as realistic. it's a little hard to believe.

Regardless, I did like this book. I just wish it did a little bit more to make the characters more human, more evidently fallible, because for most of the book they come across as Mary Sues. There's some great description ('muted swirls of color', 'twilight of unreason', 'as a ghost chills the one he passes in the night') but i'm not sure if i enjoyed reading it simply because I like fantasy, or if the novel could stand on its own outside the genre.

Giving this a 3 stars out of 5 because 2.5 is not an option.

The book is an exploration of conflict, destiny, and the struggle for survival in a richly imagined world. From its compelling prologue to its reflective epilogue, Derrien Relyea masterfully weaves together personal narratives, epic battles, and intricate lore to deliver a powerful and engaging read.

One of the book's greatest strengths is its ability to bridge mythic past with a turbulent future, drawing connections between age-old prophecies and the immediate struggles of its characters. The prologue sets a dramatic stage by introducing us to valor, sacrifice, and the foreboding sense of destiny that propels the narrative forward. These opening moments immediately immerse readers in a world where every battle, every vision, hints at a larger, unfolding saga.

Throughout the narrative, Relyea offers a meticulous account of an ancient war that challenges both the spirit and the sword. The story is enriched with vivid depictions of epic conflicts and deeply personal journeys, showcasing themes of resilience, identity, and transformation. Each character's struggle is rendered with a balance of emotional depth and symbolic significance, mirroring the broader societal and mystical conflicts at play.

The epilogue brings the narrative full circle, reinforcing the themes of sacrifice and destiny while leaving readers with a lingering call to action. It reflects on the cyclical nature of war and peace, urging us to consider how the past shapes our future and how the courage of a few can alter the fate of many. This closing reflection leaves a lasting impact, ensuring that the lessons of the story continue to resonate long after the final page is turned.

Overall, The Black War Begins is a must-read for anyone drawn to epic fantasy that blurs the line between myth and reality. Derrien Relyea’s evocative storytelling, intricate world-building, and profound thematic depth combine to create a narrative that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally engaging. Whether you’re a seasoned fan of the genre or new to epic tales of heroism and destiny, this book promises to inspire, provoke, and captivate.

Just finished with this book one,, and was so invested in the story,, that I have to search for book 2.
So here's my review,, with my personal opinion,, might vary for you..!
It's a pure fantasy,,, And yes,,, we have MIGHTY DRAGON FRIENDS... and we BLOOD-LIFE-BOND with them.
The start was a head start..., made me stick to the book.. I did got confused in the starting chapters with the shift between point of views and visions... But then understood,,, this is how those were supposed to be..!
Our FC Darque is epic warrior... And her journey of character development is amazing, while she searches for the truth of her life..!
I don't know if adult male would read this fantasy series,,, but I am sure most of them would relate with Griffin's character...!
How can I forget Storm... The perfect side character.. I would love if we had more of her story..!
The description of dragons,, bring them to life.. and the way author chooses to make up the characteristics of Thier species,, makes me love dragons more..!
Gunnar and darque relationship was so wholesome... I just wish they would have worked out some spell for them.. might changing any one of their species,, (else it seems a bit disturbing for me.. just might be my opinion,, others might enjoy that ONE CHAPTER). And as I haven't completed second book I don't know if they are going to have any spell.

The real fun is in the end chapters.. when suddenly it's Shayla taking over the shine... Damn,,, she is the warrior I am sure she's going to be inspiration for our main lead... And also for most of the women.

So I am going for the book 2 now to find out,,, who's the spy,,,? will the war end,,? who will win,,? And what's the rest of Shayla story..?? What will happen to our couple future??

The Black War Begins by Derrien Reylea is a captivating fantasy novel that immerses readers in a world of dragons, ancient wars, and complex characters. This was my first experience with Reylea's writing, and I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and richness of the story.

At its core, the book follows a young dragon warrior, whose bravery, compassion, and tragic past immediately endear her to the reader. Reylea has done a commendable job of crafting a protagonist who is both relatable and inspiring. Her journey to protect her world, which teeters on the edge of a catastrophic war, is compelling and emotionally engaging.

The world-building in this novel is particularly impressive. Reylea paints a vivid picture of a magical realm, reconstructing it with enough detail to make it feel alive. The atmosphere is rich, and the story's fantasy elements—especially the dragons and the ancient conflicts—are both thrilling and immersive. If you enjoy tales of old, uncovering conspiracies, and a good dose of dragon lore, this book will undoubtedly capture your imagination.

However, while the story is intriguing and the events keep you turning the pages, the book is not without its flaws. Some descriptions tend to be overly long, and the abundance of secondary characters occasionally makes the plot feel convoluted. These elements can slow down the pacing and make the narrative a bit dense. A more concise approach might have turned this good novel into a truly gripping page-turner.

Despite these minor drawbacks, The Black War Begins is a satisfying read that left me eager to see what happens next to several key characters. For fans of fantasy, especially those who appreciate intricate worlds and deep character development, this book is a worthy addition to your reading list. I’m looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds in the next installment.

Thanks to @BookTasters for the opportunity to dive into this magical world.

I WANT A DRAGON
Darque Legends: The Black War Begins, Is a very compelling believable mythical fantasy that makes all dragon tales no longer a myth. I fell in love with Darque and Gunnarr story, life bond, destiny, premonition and prophecy that made me want my own dragon. To incorporate life crystals, made it even more interesting for me, since I myself use crystals daily it was intriguing. I do not want to spoil it but I truly enjoyed the sister bond as well and seeing Darque and Storm take in this huge battle war until the fighting end had me clapping and cheering them on.

The author brings dragons to life in a way, that their nemesis the black whom was the center of triggering a possible lost war reminds you of what some Christian refer to a Satan aka the black as the book calls the enemy, and who Darque and worriers were battle training for, reminded me of where I read in the in the bible ‭‭Satan was a dragon. Revelation ‭12‬:‭9‬ “The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”

I was like WOW! Okay ms dragon teller, you are on to something, maybe a hidden ancestor. Well maybe I got a little too deep for some, but I truly enjoyed the author style of writing. Incorporating fantasy thoughts and plots, but having you truly thinking… could this have happened for real. Let me not forget to mention the OH WOW twist towards the end where they found out where their true blood line started.

This is an excellent book for lovers of fantasy, folklore, dragons, and adventure. Loved… loved… loved… it and thank you for entertaining me. If it was adapted into a movie, I totally would watch it.

I received a copy of this novel for an honest review.

After reading a brief sample of The Black War Begins, I knew I would love it, and the novel did not disappoint.

Relyea does a great job of building on the tension of the plot as the war looms near whilst simultaneously engaging her readers with the backstory of several of its main characters. It was nearly impossible not to fall in love with Darque's brazenness, and Relyea did a great job with Darque's character progression after each trial, battle, or relationship issue she faced. The pacing of each character's growth was well done and did not feel forced. Relyea is exceptionally adept at eliciting an emotional response from her readers, and as a result, it was damn near impossible not to grow too attached to the characters.

As much as I enjoyed the novel, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because I would have liked to see more character progression and backstory for Darque's sister Storm. It is evident in the novel, yay, foreshadowing, that Storm plays a vital part in the series.

Overall, I was extremely pleased with the novel, and I cannot wait to read the next to find out what happens to several key characters. If you like Dragons, times of old, and uncovering a conspiracy, then I highly suggest you add this to your "To Be Read" (TBR) shelf. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I was immediately drawn by the way Derrien Relyea writes. The author uses a wonderful and somewhat poetic style, using words and descriptions seldom seen in modern tales.
For this reason, I really enjoyed reading The Black War Begins. Descriptions bursting with intricate detail is something I really enjoy in my fantasy books.
I know some often do not enjoy the author writing a lot about a scene, or an expression or a moment, but for me, especially in an epic fantasy where there tend to be many moving parts to the story, it really helps me visualise the beauty of an old fantasy setting and world.
The world building is great, and the story includes many of my favourite things (dragons, magic, and a bad-ass female lead).
Darque is a likeable protagonist, which makes for a likeable tale. She has faced some hardships and troubles, making her relatable and a girl you root for when reading.
If you like epic fantasy, big world building, mythical creatures and magical lore, The Black War Begins is a great read.

Thank you to @BookTasters and the author, Derrien Relyea for the chance to read and review this book for free. I apologise for the time it took me to read, I've been super busy and had a very big tbr pile!

I’m not going to give any spoilers so no worries about reading this review. :)

I really enjoyed reading this book. As someone who has strived away from fantasy for a bit, this one was a nice intro back into the genre. The story was well written and it was a very clear book 1 to the series. The world building and character design was well thought out and allowed for some interesting chemistry that I personally really enjoyed. Although I would’ve LOVED if this book had a map (I’m a sucker for a good map).

There was a clear intentional plan in place from page one to the epilogue. Which for me was a very big plus. Even the prologue felt very much like the birthday card attached to a very nice present wrapped ever so neatly, to deliver just the right amount of intrigue.

Now you might be asking, why only 4 stars? In my opinion, I wish there were fewer uses of
“ ‘twas “ and other similar contractions. They made the writing slightly confusing and I found myself rereading certain portions more than once to gain full clarity on the story. I get why it’s there and the relevance to the story (another upside to the author’s vision) but I felt it could’ve been dialed back just a little at times.

All things considered, great read! I would definitely recommend this book!!! :D

If you’re drawn to dragon lore, Darque Legends: The Black War Begins will sweep you off your feet! From the first encounter, there’s an immediate connection with the dragons and their riders. Familiar traits are there for fans of classic dragon tales, yet this story brings fresh twists, with unique adventures and intriguing romances woven into the epic journey. The world-building is so vivid that you can practically see the landscapes and feel the fire of each battle. Derrien Relyea’s attention to detail creates a living, breathing realm that captivates your imagination. The steady pace of adventure, paired with tantalizing mysteries, keeps you hooked as each revelation only deepens the plot. This is a truly remarkable story—a thrilling journey into legend that fantasy lovers won’t want to miss!

Humans, dragons, and a prophecy that could change everything—this story has it all.

Darque, the fierce warrior of the Dragon Clan, bonds with Gunnarr, her dragon partner, through a MindLink that makes their telepathic connection as intense as their battles. Their bond is unbreakable—unless Darque chooses intimacy over duty (yes, the stakes are that high).

The story plunges you into a world of magic, prophecy, and looming war. The clash between the Dragon Clan and the sinister Black Hoard sets the stage for high-stakes action, while hints of Darque’s mysterious parentage and her personal growth keep the intrigue alive.

Darque is resourceful, smart, and absolutely badass—a protagonist you’ll root for from page one. If you’re looking for a richly built fantasy world with complex bonds and epic showdowns, this book delivers.

Darque Legends: The Black War Begins is an immersive fantasy novel about Darque Aalanna Grifynn, a warrior of the Dragon Clan, as she prepares for war against an ancient evil. The story explores a unique magical bond between warriors and dragons, adding emotional depth and high stakes to the battle against The Black Dragon.

The world-building is rich, with a detailed history and culture that make the setting feel real. Darque is a strong, capable protagonist, and her bond with her sister adds warmth to the story. However, the book has a slow start due to heavy world building , and the writing is quite dense, which can make it a challenging read. The number of characters and lore elements may also be overwhelming at times.

Many thanks to the author and BookTasters for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is a good fantasy, mystery read that has it all, dragons, conspiracy, mysteries, and a strong female lead & dragon warrior. The main character Derrien Reylea is very relatable and well rounded character who it is easy to root for root for throughout the book. The other characters are interesting as well and the writing is easy to follow.
The story itself is very interesting and detailed and keeps you reading until the very last page.
The book could have been a little bit shorter as some areas of the descriptive pieces seemed too long when you really wanted to move the story on.

I’ll start by saying that the writing in this book is impressive to say the least.
For me this was an unexpected read. I’m still not sure if it was my cup of tea, as it felt a bit convoluted. I was confused at the beginning and it took me quite a while to get used to the writing style and accustomed to the characters.
I loved the dragons, but I still yearned for more explanations related to their connection to the warriors.
There was a lot of world building in this book, which I enjoyed. It was easier to picture the scenes.
(I also disliked the use of “twas” so much I’m sorry I know it served a purpose but I couldn’t bear it 😭)

Thank you so much @booktasters for the arc!

As a person who loves to read fantasy with a lot of twists and turns. This book is literally goals. I took my time with it. Its filled with Magic DRAGONS and simply perfection.

If you are anything like me trust me you will want to read this.

Let me put it this way: This book is just the starting point. This is no ordinary post-apocalyptic place. Oh no, we have characters with real growth. It's the balance of dark and light, literally. I kept going back to completely enjoy some scenes. This is that good. But I do have to say... at times, I was just reading to figure out what exactly was happening. It's just a tad heavy on details here and there, but this book is a good read for sure.

Three stars is too little and four stars seems too much, but seeing that there's no 3.8⭐, I'll go with this.

Now, normally I'm not really a fan of dragons but this book has changed something in me. I liked the storyline and the conversations (when I happened to get them). I also loved the characters. Ngl, it wasn't easy to get into this book but it was a great read. I do wish I got more insights on the secondary characters, at some point a lot was going on in the story. But generally, it's a nice book and I am totally invested in Derrien.

I got this from booktasters and this is my honest review.
