A breath of sky broke through the canopy of trees in the small clearing. A wooden cross had been pushed into the earth, and four candles surrounded the boy. He looked as if he was sleeping, but the rotting leaves upon which he lay were his grave.

In the early hours, Head of the Ritualistic Behavioural Crime unit, Dr Harrison Lane , is called to a woodland to find the lifeless body of a young boy. Scrawled across his chest is a Latin satanic exorcism prayer and scraps of paper covered in quotes from the Old Testament are stuffed in his mouth. Who would want this innocent child dead?

Harrison is certain the killer has links with a religious group, and the clue lies in the twisted individual’s childhood.

As he delves further, Harrison visits a cemetery and realises he’s been there before, dredging up a chilling memory from his past. When he was a little boy, his mother, dressed in a black cloak, had brought him there just before she died.

While Harrison tries to make sense of his traumatic flashback and how it might be linked to the case, a child goes missing while on his way to a leisure centre on a busy Saturday morning.

Can Harrison battle the demons of his own past and find the killer before the life of another innocent child is taken?

Fans of Angela Marsons, LJ Ross and Matt Brolly will love this gripping and unputdownable crime series introducing Dr Harrison Lane.

I listened to the audiobook of this one and I liked it overall. I thought the narrator did a good job, but I’m not sure that he was the right choice. The book is set in London and most of the characters are British, but the narrator has an American accent. It was a little weird that when people talked to some of the British character they had British accents but when the story was told from their perspectives they didn’t. This is the first book in a new mystery police procedural thriller series. The main character Dr. Harrison Lane is a really interesting sleuth. Dr. Harrison Lane’s stepfather was a Native American tracker and he taught Dr. Lane everything he could. Dr. Lane is an expert in the occult so while he doesn’t work for the police directly they have hired him to consult on cases he can help with. So when someone kidnaps a small boy and leaves him dead in a cemetery looking like the occult could be involved he’s called in. I liked the mystery and found it to be a good start. Dr. Lane has some unsolved mysteries in his past which also come out to play setting the stage for a second book for sure.

Nothing groundbreaking. Police work was solid. RTC

Narration notes:
Our narrator is American and this takes place in London. He does do British accents for the dialogue, but just wondering why not have a British narrator?

Its not everyday you have a tall sexy Sherlock Holmes with a dark past. I was fascinated by Dr. Harrison Lane as soon as i started listening to this book. Dr. Harrison Lane, is the Head of the Police Ritualistic Behavioural Crime unit. This is quite different from the books ive read. I'm not sure I've read any book with a protagonist as Dr Lane. The methods he uses in his investigations gives a different perspective to the crime-solving genre. That being said.. this book had so many characters that I found myself confused most of the times. There were times i had no idea who I was listening to. This made it a bit confusing for me to really get into the book to enjoy it. But i'm sure I'll read the other books in the series as I want to know more about Dr Lane and his methods. I received a copy of this audiobook from Dreamscape Media through #NetGalley for an honest opinion. Thank you.

I am a fan of Angela Marson's books, and this reminded me of her books. I have enjoyed many of them.

I found it to be a police procedural type book with likeable characters in it, but you know you are in for a series.

So, if series are your thing, this book is for you.

Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape for an ARC of this audiobook.

Great Story!

So I just read this whole book in one sitting. From the beginning I was hooked. It was interesting to see how Harrison could figure out how total strangers think by either watching them or by looking at clues they find. If you like that sort of thing, seeing how events in the past like trauma affects people than this is the perfect book for you to read. And it kept me entertained until the end. Plus the criminal was not some wild kook but someone clever in many ways as well.

There are also other incidents from Harrison's past that I would like to know the answer to! There is a very real mystery there, figures in strange cloaks + a creepy cemetery.

Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for an ARC of this audiobook!

I thought this was a very solid thriller/police procedural for how short it was compared to other books I've read. I thought the characters were well developed, but I felt like I was missing something with Dr. Harrison Lane. After digging around on Goodreads, I realized there are several other "Harrison Lane" novels under a slightly different author name. So I very well could have missed some of the backstory. I'll definitely revisit Dr. Lane! He's such a well rounded character. He is so in touch with what he does and has such a passion for helping people. He's just so likeable.

The narrator did a great job as well!

Solid 4 stars!

This was a solid read. I liked Harrison as a protagonist. I wanted more of his background included, but maybe that’ll come in the next few books in the series. The actual victims of the crimes was different from what I typically see, but so sad.

Graceful Portrait of Post-War Womanhood
Luisa A. Jones’s The Broken Vow is a well-crafted historical novel set-in post World War I Britain. As the second book in the Fitznortons series, it follows Charlotte Fitznorton, whose life is upended by family tragedy and societal change. Faced with the emotional toll of war, particularly through her fiancé’s shell shock, Charlotte transforms her ancestral home into a convalescent facility for officers, confronting class, gender, and personal challenges.
Jones offers a compelling exploration of resilience, duty, and female agency in a changing world. With rich historical detail and nuanced character development, The Broken Vow is a thoughtful and engaging read that stands firmly within the tradition of classic historical fiction.

I received this ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Before I start I’m happy to tell you that the first 7 books in this series are all going to realised on the same day 03/05/23 with the 8th following in June.

Also thanks to the publisher Storm Publishing for Auto-Approving me on NetGalley so I can read all your amazing books.

Dr Harrison Lane is part of the Ritualistic Behavioural Crime Unit which is part of the Metropolitan Police, he’s been called to the scene of a crime which is the body of deceased 7 year old boy.

The story follows how the character’s investigate and solve the crime, it’s a chilling case that left me with the shivers.

I was mesmerised by Dr Harrison Lane he’s like no other character I’ve read about before, it’s like he’s got super power and can deduce what happened at a crime scene just by looking, he can also tell a person’s personality, job, life etc just from meeting them briefly.

We learn how and why he can do this as the book progresses. It’s absolutely fascinating.

I also loved the other characters that make up the book, with maybe a hint of romance blooming?.

I enjoyed Harrison’s relationship with DCI Sandra Barker and Sandra herself, I’m here for the over 50’s women being brave and bold.

I felt really sorry for DS Jack Salter, he’s dealing with lots of heartbreaking issues at home but he’s still a great detective.

Ryan is Harrison’s assistant, he’s so funny and always has Harrison’s back and I’m intrigued to find out more about him as the series progresses.

I can’t wait to read the next books in the series, I’m hooked!.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you NetGalley & Storm Publishing for the chance to read an advanced copy of Broken Angels! I love a good detective series & I absolutely love Dr. Harrison’s stories because they give me Criminal Minds vibes. 😍 there are 8 books in the series, 1-7 are all being published on May 3rd & the 8th is being published on June 2nd. I loved the introduction of each character throughout the book & the glimpses of background information that help show the hows and whys that shaped the characters personalities and purposes. I also love that the focused case in the book is wrapped up by the end & that there’s an ongoing storyline in the “background” (re: Dr. Lane’s motivation to find his mother’s murderer) that will make readers want to read the next book in the series to keep following it! I can’t wait to keep reading about Dr. Harrison Lane!!

Dr Harrison Lane, from the Ritualistic Behavioural Crime Unit is called to a crime scene where a young boy is laid out in the rotting leaves, with an inside down cross, candles burning and a Latin inscription on his chest. Dr Lane is a an expert in this field and his enquiries take him to a graveyard where he has a flashback to his own unusual childhood. He has been to this graveyard before with his mother shortly before she died. Not long after, another child does missing and Dr Lane needs to battle his own demons while trying to locate the missing child befor the killer strikes again.
A refreshing take on a crime novel, I really enjoyed Dr Lanes character and can see more details unravelling as the series continues. Gritty crimes to keep the readers hooked, desperate to know who the killer is and what made them commit such a heinous crime. 5 stars to Gwyn Bennett.

A brand new series introducing Dr Harrison Lane of the Ritualistic Behavioural Crime unit.

When the body of a young boy is discovered in woodland with an inverted cross and Latin phrases scrawled on his body Dr Lane knows they are looking for a deranged killer. Fighting his own demons he must put them aside to work out who did this awful crime. And then another child goes missing.

I absolutely loved this book and getting to know Dr Lane as well as the other characters. It was fast paced and kept me reading late into the night. I cannot wait to read more.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Storm Publishing for an advance copy of Broken Angel, the first novel to feature Dr Harrison Lane, a civilian consultant who runs the Met’s Ritualistic Behavioural Crime Unit.

Dr Harrison Lane is called in when the body of a child is found in a local wood. The boy has a satanic exorcism prayer written on his chest and his mouth is stuffed with Old Testament biblical quotations. They have barely started with their investigation when another young boy goes missing.

I thoroughly enjoyed Broken Angels, which is a novel of two halves with the first half setting the scene and identifying the perpetrator, while the second half is the hunt for the identified perpetrator and the latest victim.

I’m in two minds about this format, because it works, but, on the other hand, I prefer a more unbalanced narrative where the majority of the novel is taken up with identification as it leaves more uncertainty and room for guesswork. In this case it felt that the identification came too easily. Still, as I said, it works. The author isn’t trying to re-invent the wheel, so it’s fairly standard police procedural fare with a sickening death, a touch of the exotic with the ritualistic aspects and the usual frictions between the investigators. It is absorbing and an easy way to pass a few hours.

The novel is very strong on characterisation. The most affecting is the portrayal of the missing boy’s mother, which seems incredibly realistic and heartbreaking. The police detectives, DCI Sandra Barker and DS Jack Salter, are also relatable, her with her failing marriages and he with his depressive wife. Then there’s Dr Harrison Lane and he’s the least realistic of the lot with his strange backstory and uncanny eye for detail. None of it is particularly believable but it’s fiction so anything goes and it is fun to see how far the author pushes it. Throughout the novel he has fragmentary memories of dark deeds in his childhood and he has attracted the attention of an elderly couple who have started taunting him with that past. There is no explanation for this until the final pages of the novel, so until then the whole thread was annoying rather than tantalising. This will be an ongoing thread as nothing was resolved in this one.

Broken Angels is a good read that I can recommend.

Broken Angels by Gwyn Bennett is a chilling and addictive crime thriller that seamlessly blends procedural elements with supernatural undertones, delivering a captivating read that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Dr. Harrison Lane, the Head of the Ritualistic Behavioral Crime unit, is called to a crime scene where the lifeless body of a young boy is discovered. The gruesome murder appears to be a twisted exorcism gone wrong, leaving Harrison determined to find the killer. As he investigates, he realizes that the key to unraveling the mystery lies in his own haunting past, involving his mother's dark secrets.

Bennett masterfully develops the character of Dr. Harrison Lane, a likable protagonist with a troubled past that adds depth to his perspective on the cases he encounters. The supporting characters, including DCI Baker and the police team, are well-rounded and relatable, enhancing the overall reading experience.

The plot is expertly crafted, delivering a perfect balance of suspense and reality. The first half of the book sets the stage and introduces the perpetrator, while the second half intensifies the hunt for the killer and a missing child. This structure kept me engaged and invested in the outcome.

While the crime investigation takes center stage, Bennett skillfully weaves in glimpses of the characters' personal lives, adding emotional depth to the narrative. The struggles and vulnerabilities of the characters make them more relatable and enhance the overall authenticity of the story.

The audiobook narration by George Weightman is commendable, with his skillful delivery bringing the male characters to life. Broken Angels marks the beginning of a promising series, leaving readers eager for more. Gwyn Bennett's writing is engrossing and suspenseful, leaving no doubt that this series will become a favorite among fans of crime thrillers. With its blend of mystery, well-developed characters, and a unique setting, this book is a highly recommended read.

Modern Sherlock Holmes/ Police Procedural Blend. Here, we get yet another police procedural set in Great Britain, so the terms and some of the procedures are a bit different than American audiences generally expect, yet are in-line with other similar books I've read. This particular new series has a different bent than most in that its central (series titular) character is a trained tracker/ behaviorist, and his backstory and actions here are reminiscent of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Original Detective. His tracking abilities are also reminiscent of the more modern day author David Wood's Bones Bonebrake, and indeed both Lane and Bonebrake have connections to the same region of the US. This book also features a bit more of a disturbed villain than usual, and some scenes may be a bit much for some readers. Nothing overly graphic, and certainly not "on screen", but the Carrie-type religious abuse is quite heavy handed, while also being necessary to establish the full depravity and insanity of the villain. Overall, a compelling series starter - which is great, since new publisher Storm Publishing is re-releasing almost the entire series under new titles on the same day. Very much recommended.

A creepy and addictive story that combines nicely a procedural with supernatural elements. A child has been murdered in a gruesome manner that seems like an exorcism gone wrong. Who you gonna call but the Head of the Ritualistic Behavioral Crime unit, Dr Harrison Lane. He’s a very likable character with a dark past that gives him a different outlook on the cases. There is a mystery surrounding his mother that seems to be an underlying subplot for future novels. After reading this one, I realized it’s the first book in a series that I’m adding to my TBR immediately. I liked the characters, not only Lane but also the police team. DCI Baker, their boss, is strong and smart, and Lane’s rivalry with Jack Salter was a nice touch. The plot was very well crafted, it was easy to follow and surprising all at once. The dialogues have a nice rhythm. George Weightman’s narration is great for the male characters, the female ones sounded a little less organic, but I find that happens sometimes with the gender barrier. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media/Storm Publishing for the free audio book in exchange for an honest review. This was narrated by George Weightman who did an exceptional job! highly recommend the audio version if you enjoy that!

This is the first in a new series by the author featuring Dr Harrison Lane, a civilian consultant who runs the Met’s Ritualistic Behavioral Crime Unit. Dr Lane is called in when the body of a child is found in the local woods with a satanic exorcism prayer written on his chest and his mouth is stuffed with Old Testament biblical quotations. They have barely started with their investigation when another young boy goes missing.

This is a solid, mystery with enough suspense and reality to engage the reader. The characters are very likable and relatable with glimpses into their lives. For example, one of the DCIs is struggling with a failed marriage and the depiction of the mother of the dead child is just heartbreaking.

The novel is divided into 2 parts with the first half setting the scene and identifying the perpetrator, and the second half is the hunt for the identified perpetrator and the latest victim. I have not read a book with this type of setting and it worked really well for me.

Highly recommend!!

A Bit Different
This is a good story, and definitely a page-turner. I especially found the main character, Dr. Harrison Lane to be intriguing if not charismatic. He has a very unusual personality: the lone fish swimming against a school of like-minded fish. No one really seems to know how to read him, but I got the impression that didn't bother him at all.

While I found Dr. Lane a character to latch onto, I'll admit I felt like the rest of the characters were not well-developed. Every other person in this story seemed to take an ancillary role to him, as though no others were worth the depth and backstory it takes for a reader to become invested with them. For me, this made the story feel a bit off balance, which is why it received 4 stars from me even though the main arc of the storyline was riveting.

Normally I know early on in book one if I'm going to want to pursue the entire series or not. Strangely, after having finished the first book, I still don't know how I feel about it overall. Chances are, I will pick up the second book at some point and see how that one goes. Fans of police procedurals, especially those taking place in Britain, will enjoy this story.

Thanks NetGalley for the audio book of Broken Angels. I like the concept of this book. A man, Harrison Lane, is trained by his step father in Arizona to see things other people overlook. The scent that broken leaves make, tire tracks that are just a bit different from others, ink on fingers. This is a very useful quality to have when you are working for the Met in London. A boy is found dead after being taken. Another boy, Alex, soon follows. What Harrison uncovers leads him to an abandoned warehouse and a killer that thinks he has God on his side. Harrison is also looking for the people that killed his mother. That being said, I. Could. Not. Stand. The. Narrator!!!!!!!! He wasn’t exactly horrible. His British accent was ok. However, every time the word “been” came up, he pronounced it “bean”. Not a problem if you are British (or can do a decent accent) but he was speaking in plain, old, American English. Ugh. I found myself a bit distracted by that. The book had a good story line, the love interest is a bit to predictable in my opinion. This is the first in a series. I will probably READ, and NOT LISTEN to the next one.

Young children are being kidnapped, and the body of a young boy has been found in a graveyard, surrounded by candles and a wooden cross.
Bible verses have been pushed into his mouth.

Harrison Lane has been called in to assist, He is an expert in ritual killings and practices.
He works with DCI Sandra Barker and her team to find a 7 year old who is in the hands of a psychotic religious nut, and the child has to be found before it is too late.

This is the first book in a series featuring Harrison Lane, and I think that it will be a really great series to follow. I can't wait for the next book!
The characters are being developed, and we have insights into their personal lives, which spills over into their professional lives.
In this first book, the characters have not yet settled into a team as such, but I think that they will, in time, become like a family.
I like Harrison, he has a way about him, he is methodical, smart and intuitive, and very observant.

"He had no fear of going to hell. He had already met the devil"

Now that's how to start book 1 of an 8 book police procedural thriller series. Broken Angels by precise detailed author Gwyn Bennett is a solid story that for lovers of this genre, like me, it's a joy to listen to narrator George Weightman dissect this ritualistic murder. We get to meet the motorcycle riding, taekwondo teaching, part Native American tracker, occult specialist Dr. Harrison Lane. He's a tall sexy Sherlock Holmes with a dark past.

A young boy is dead in the woods with an exorcism prayer scrawled across him. Before they can even begin the case another boy is missing and they are racing against the clock. There are enticing subplots, not all resolved in this book, there are full thought out characters and I am hooked on Dr. Lane. Nothing is broken in the start to this series.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from Dreamscape Media via #NetGalley for fair and honest reviews. All opinions are my own.

Gwyn Bennett’s Broken Angels is a gripping and emotionally charged crime thriller, blending elements of mystery, psychological suspense, and character-driven drama. The novel revolves around the investigation of a series of disturbing murders, with a detective protagonist who is both haunted by their past and deeply committed to uncovering the truth.

Bennett’s storytelling excels in building tension and atmosphere, with a complex plot that unfolds through unexpected twists and revelations. The characters, especially the lead investigator, are deeply layered, bringing emotional depth to the thriller as personal stakes are woven into the unfolding mystery. Themes of trauma, justice, and redemption are explored, giving the novel a thoughtful edge beyond the usual crime narrative.

Broken Angels is fast-paced yet carefully constructed, keeping readers engaged with its intricate mystery and psychological insights. Fans of dark, emotionally driven thrillers will find it a compelling read, with enough suspense and intrigue to keep them turning the pages.

3.5 ⭐ rounded down
I didn't dislike this book but I didn't like it enough to sing it's praises. I still might read/listen to another in the series to see if it gets better. The biggest ding against me really liking it is the religious/ritualistic/cult-y type focus....I find it a little eye-roll worthy to think that there are enough ritualistic killings in the UK that it would require an expert. It would have been more appealing to me if the main character was billed as a "regular" crime profiler/criminal behavior analyst with a personal interest, due to his upbringing, in the religious/occult/ritualistic killings. The writing was decent enough, but there were a few cringey moments between the expert and the investigator...one where the female investigator was glad she checked her makeup so that she could greet the crime expert with confidence...what year is this even? Overall, the story reads just like an episode on a decent-enough crime/cop drama on Netflix...so, not too bad.

This series has me hooked. I've already devoured book 2 and I am now on the free prequal novella that Gwyn kindly gifts when you sign up to her newsletter. I love the ritualistic behavioural side of the crimes in this series. It's just something a bit different to other series. It does give me Chris Carter vibes if you're a fan of the Robert Hunter books.

Harrison is a unique character and I love getting to know him more. His insights into the case are so interesting and I'm so intrigued by his past. There are also some great recurring characters. The hunt for the killer had me hooked and I had no idea if they were going to find the missing boy in time. It's a fast paced read that I couldn't put down. Definitely recommend.
