Publisher’s Synopsis: 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐱 is about the devastation of loss, the difficulty of relationships, and the family ties that bond. Written in the vein of Steel Magnolias, the story takes us into the lives of African American families with their unique hardships, triumphs in relationships, culture, and values. It is relatable, comforting, and challenging. My Thoughts 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐱 is a captivating journey that superbly chronicles the complexities of a family of women, as each woman navigates her own struggles, insecurities and perspectives. In this novel Tamika Christy delivers a stellar nonlinear narrative that weaves together the lives of four generations. Christy paints a vivid picture of the ripple effect one generation can have on generations that follow. I did not want this book to end. The characters have stayed with me, lingering in my thoughts long after I completed the final page. Even as I pen these thoughts, I wonder about Emersyn's current situation, how Phillis is coping with life, and how Manon has managed after revealing her truth. There is nothing better than a realistic novel. I love a story that is believable. I find it resonating. What I enjoyed most about Roux is that it is believable. It’s realistic fiction at its best. Also, the characters are well developed. At various times in the book I was able to relate to each one of these women. I understood why they made the decisions they made. I had moments where I felt for each one of them. As I was reading, I found myself reflecting on my own family ties. Being the youngest of four sisters, the dynamics within this story prompted me to think about our sisterly relationships, as well as the concept of inherited trauma. For all the above reasons this book deserves no less than 5⭐️s. Tamika Christy is truly a gifted writer. I highly recommend adding this one to your TBR.
I enjoyed this book so much! Roux is a beautiful story of family, love, and grace in the midst of discord and trauma. Tamika does an amazing job of capturing the nuances of family relationships and the expression of family dynamics over time.
The story is told from multiple points of view, which can sometimes be confusing, but not in this book. Tamika skillfully tells each person's story with care and a deep understanding of how different people's experiences impact others in relationship.
I found the characters relatable as a Black woman. The story kept my attention without being overly dramatized. If you enjoy a good story about family with a lil drama that will have you re-evaluating how you view your own family relationships, this is a great one to pick up!
Roux is a stunning and challenging novel about three generations of an African American family and the traumas, secrets, and battles they endure. It's told from three different perspectives, all under the Chavís family from three different time periods. We have Manon, Emersyn, and Odester. Written in the vein of Steel Magnolias, the story takes us into the lives of African American families with their unique hardships and triumphs in relationships, culture, and values.
With themes ranging from family dynamics to healing, Roux was beautifully told. The characters jump off the page and feel like you are eavesdropping on their conversations. They feel so real. The three women in the book are heavily impacted by their mothers and their relationships with family. Theirs is a cooking family, and the title, Roux, comes from the roux base for gumbo. The gumbo is a blend of all these different things, but it is an excellent metaphor for family in this novel. You have all these different—sometimes crazy—personalities, but blending them together makes them something perfect. You get support and love. Enigmatic Roux gives us a glimpse into the lives of African American culture.
This book was amazing! It’s centered around a family from Louisiana, who has some traumas, secrets, and battles to endure. It focuses on the strength of family and getting to the other side of difficulties. This story was written so wonderfully it made me feel like I was sitting at my granny’s table hearing a story.. I forgot I was reading! It’s a story that will invoke emotions, give perspective, and make you truly grateful for family! I want to thank Tamira Christy for allowing me to read the advanced readers copy I knew it would be amazing! And it was! I didn’t want it to end! Look out for this book January 2024!
This was just a brilliant read about the trials and tribulations of a family life. You will sees all the issues they will go through and how they deal with them all. How will it all? How will their lives go? Follow them and see how it will all go
Great read! I deeply enjoyed reading this. Great examples of how secrets can tear families apart. How generational trauma is passed down, how the disappointments of how one’s life turned out especially parents; can cause them to unintentionally traumatize and alienate their children… this book has so much depth. My favorite part is how all the negatives can be healed through open communication, vulnerability & honesty.
