Bear Grylls has become known around the world as one of the most recognized faces of survival and outdoor adventure. His journey to this acclaim started in the UK on the Isle of Wight, where his late father taught him to climb and sail. Trained from a young age in martial arts, Bear went on to spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces, serving with 21 SAS. It was here that he perfected many of the skills that his fans all over the world enjoy watching him pit against mother-nature. Despite a free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, where he broke his back in three places, and after enduring months in military rehabilitation, Bear went on to become one of the youngest ever climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Bear went on to star in Discovery Channel's Emmy nominated Man Vs Wild and Born Survivor TV series, which has become one of the most watched shows on the planet. Off screen, Bear has lead record-breaking expeditions, from Antarctica to the Arctic, which in turn have raised over £2.5million for children around the world. In recognition of his expertise and service, Bear was appointed as the youngest ever Chief Scout to 28 million Scouts worldwide, awarded an honorary commission as a Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Navy, and has authored 10 books, including To My Sons.
Wow! BG (Bear Grylls) is amazing and a great storyteller. Like a Kumbaya session, each chapter was as entertaining as the last. It is a great reflection of himself. It tells his tales from beginning to present, and doesn’t skip a beat with humor, truth and adventure. I can’t wait to read his first one. I highly recommend this for the adventurous at heart.
Bear Grylls is the iconic adventurer and survivalist star of Man vs Wild and the more recent Running Wild. Never Give Up is his latest book. It’s told in a folksy down to earth manner, often in a stream of consciousness manner rather than in a structured manner. You get his tall tales about biting the heads off snakes and drinking his own urine to survive. You get his philosophical musings and his can-do attitude and more of a sense of who he is as a person than you get in the television series. And you could basically open up any page at random and enjoy his stories and asides.
Reading Bear Grylls always makes me want to go and climb Mount Everest. But aside from giving me itchy feet, Bear’s optimism and general go-get-‘em attitude is genuinely inspiring and refreshing in a world that sometimes seems to tell us to accept our lot and that life just sucks sometimes. There’s a lot we can do to influence our circumstances. And while we shouldn’t deny that bad times will come, we shouldn’t forget that life is an adventure. Encouraging resilience can’t fall by the wayside.
DNF at 56% over a year +. In one word, bland. Many stories which in theory should be very interesting, are just not due to the dull story telling. He comes across as a nice dude but I just found him boring. Short easily digestible chapters but I felt there was a lack of flow.
Vairākās nodaļās viņš cenšas iedvesmot, jo to no viņa sagaida, bet varēja to grāmatā pasniegt īsāk. Man labāk patika "Dubļi, sviedri un asaras".
This book covers three aspects of Bear's life: Bear the adventurer, Bear the businessman and Bear the family man. The first half was snappy and entertaining but the second became slow and repetitive. You certainly couldn't miss Bear's 'Never Give Up' mantra as it's mentioned every other page!
Bear Grylls "Ära anna iial alla" on pööraste telesarjadega loodusseikleja teine autobiograafia. Raamat lubab kaadritaguseid ja muud põnevat. Ma ei ole tegelikult väga palju Gryllsi saateid vaadanud, aga mulle väga meeldisid tema "You vs Wild" Netflixis ja "World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge" Amazonis.
Raamat vastas pooleldi mu ootustele.
I listened to the audio, because that's what I do! I had been hoping for more insights into Bear's life and family, which always encourages and informs my life. And I was not disappointed. Many of us love Bear for different, and or, many reasons. An awful lot of people cannot believe in the innocence and positivity, he always shows, and since I discovered him, I have followed everything I can find, because of how that wonderful disposition moves me.
In this over-sophisticated era, there are many who choose to do the modern bad-mouthing thing. But that is because they have not got to know him through his filming and writing, as others of us have. And it is that inner Bear, that is so winsome, and so exciting, because, I don't know anyone like him. I picked 'him' up a few years ago, and can't put him down!!
This was a fun, anecdotal read of Bear Grylls' life as the name of adventure within Hollywood society. I loved hearing all of these stories, and he really is a uniquely inspiring guy. I do think this was written with some rose-tinted glasses, but I was very willing to overlook that and simply engage with all these super fun and interesting little stories. I think the biggest takeaway from this novel is that Bear has no regrets from his life; he worked hard, played hard and had an infinite number of meaningful and life changing encounters, whilst managing to fulfil his personal desires and responsibilities as a family man. He built the family, home and career of his dreams, and though his body must really be in a ridiculous state by now, he loves fiercely and is very content with everything he has done. A cute read, I liked it and I would be open to reading some of his other books :)
Thank you, Netgalley and the author/publisher, for the opportunity to read and review an advanced reader's copy of this book. This in no way affects my review, all opinions are my own.
Sooo, since I read the book the day it was published, I read the book in ebook and audiobook format. What I love is that BG narrates his own book. It's always a more personal touch for me when autobiographies are read by the authors themselves. In this case, the book was even more appealing to me since BG has a British accent ;-) This book was fun to read. BG takes us to the drawing board and behind the scenes of his shows and lets us learn more about the people that have had an impact in his life such as his wife.
When Bear Grylls first started out I was not a fan - I thought his work was fake and all staged. Since then I have become a fan of all of his recent shows and love everything he does. I am so glad I picked up this book because I got a peek inside to why he was portrayed in such a way in his past roles/shows which was quite in the unfavorable way. This book also goes through all the amazing people he has interacted with in his most recent shows - and it was amazing to read, especially about Obama!! Highly recommend. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Mud, sweat and tears was the first half, more motivational and an insight in to BG. This was more of the tv shows, highlights and lowlights. Still a feel good motivational book.
Akikkel éveken, forgatásokon át együtt "küzdött", legyen szó akár a szomáliai vadonról, akár a szibériai fagyokról, akár a tévécsatornák világáról, akár a folyamatosan megjelenő rágalmakról és negatív sajtóvisszhangról.
My sweet, darling Bear. This book could have been half the length if you hadn't repeated yourself so damn much. Love him and respect him and admire him. Agree with his ethos, values and world view but honeyyyyy he repeated himself constantly throughout this book.
You could call this book a love story to nature, to his friends and family, and to God. All beautiful things. I deeply admire and respect his approach to life and it's struggles and the need for resilience which is very lapse in western society where so much has been made easy, accessible and effortless for us. I have been in mindset to set more challenges for myself and to make myself uncomfortable more to grow my character and resilience and this book re-enforced that thought process. So I certainly feel inspired.
A lot of positive thoughts and reflections in this book, it's just a hard read from an academic or literary point of view but I can appreciate that Bear writes in a way that is probably so similar to how he would speak and his cadence. If you love Bear Grylls as I do, we will forgive him a lot for his way of writing because the content of what he is saying is pure and inspirational.
Never Give Up: My Life in the Wild by Bear Grylls is a wonderful memoir of some of the events and experiences in the fascinating life of adventurist, Bear Grylls.
I just loved this memoir of Mr. Grylls. Part antidotes, part memoir, and part musings…this is a great collection of memories, inspirations, adventures, experiences, and reflections of the famous traveler, adventurer, and survivalist.
It was entertaining, unique, enjoyable, and the pages flew by. I loved watching his show, and this just brought back so many memories of watching this awesome man with my own family growing up.
Highly recommend for anyone that loves his show or anyone that enjoys world travels.
5/5 stars
Thank you National Geographic for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 3/1/22.
Bear Grylls is pretty much The Man, amirite? He is (seemingly) fearless, and willing to do just about anything—and on camera, to boot. I would be running the other way from some of these things, and if you’d like that on camera too, that is just fine with me, haha!
The read is more a collection of stories than a continuous narrative, and I expected more of the latter. I’ve not read his first autobiography, which this one kind of continues, so can’t speak to if it simply continues that writing style or not. But, that does mean the reader could easily skip around from chapter to chapter based on their own interests, rather than read it chronologically, and that’s kind of nice!
There’s a bit of language and some crudity; that aside, I found myself chuckling repeatedly at some of the stories and shaking my head in turn at Grylls’ shenanigans. Entertaining and amusing.
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Bear Grylls is absolutely remarkable. He is as tough as anyone and seems like a great person. He's done some of the most awesome stuff known to man and has many accomplishments. The was a lot of "meat left on the bone" here. He was in the wild with uber-famous people, politicians, athletes for extended periods of time and we only get a few sentences about those experiences.
His writing lost me a bit. Most of the content in the book was fairly fascinating, but it felt like a bunch of campfire talk. Lacked the organization and overarching life story I craved.
I was engaged for the most part but reading the next chapter often felt like "more of the same". My interest fizzled out toward the end and I had to take the title of the book's advice to finish.
I hate being critical about a man I admire so much but this one is a 2.75 rating for me.
As a fan of Bear Grylls, I enjoyed reading his book, Never Give Up. I love his sense of adventure and his positivity. Each chapter is short and not a continuity from the previous chapter. But it gives you great insight on how Bear got started in television, behind the scenes info and his personal and family life. If you are a fan of Bear Grylls, this is definitely a book you'll want to pick up and read. I'd like to listen to the audiobook as he narrates it himself!
Thank you Netgalley for the advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
I was sceptical about this book to begin with. I wasn’t sure if it was my cup of tea. After reading, I am pleased to have been proven wrong! The book has been written with short chapters that are filled with his experiences of TV. The chapters are long enough to give great insights into his adventures but not too long that they become boring. A good read!
This book has short chapters, each around 4 to 5 pages. The shortness makes the book quick to read but never really goes deep into any particular part. Bear discussed his tv shows and relationship with Discovery channel, to going out on his own. The most interesting times, I felt, was when he described the elements of filming his shows. However, he never really addresses why he has such a desire to subject himself to such severe elements and stunts. He mentioned drinking and cooking in his urine and eating the balls of animals multiple times. But why do that? I am a fan but I thought the book would be much better. More details and anecdotes would help.
Remarkable how in an age of cynicism and disbelief a character like Bear Grylls almost unassumingly becomes one of the probably most-watched (billons of viewers) and most prolific (connections to global world leaders and A-list celebrities) TV personality, yet remains an understated (or real) and vulnerable (yet resilient) individual.
It’s hard to believe it’s true, but when reading his biographies, you want to (and I do) believe him.
Such a positive and encouraging voice in times where we need it most! Great book!
Really wanted to enjoy this book. As a ex Marine myself, I have a lot of time for the author, but this book just fell into a personal pat on the back for Grylls from Grylls with a series of name drops about his TV shows. Ended up speed reading and even missed a whole chapter out when it was more of the same.
