Genealogy Standards

REVISED AND UPDATED FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Family historians depend upon thousands of people unknown to them. They exchange research with others; copy information from books and databases; and write libraries, societies, and government offices. At times they even hire professionals to do legwork in distant areas and trust strangers to solve important problems. But how can a researcher be assured that he or she is producing or receiving reliable results? This new edition of the official manual from the Board of Certification for Genealogists provides a standard by which all genealogists can pattern their work.

"Anyone who wants to become a certified genealogist will need to read this book." —Dick Eastman

A very concise presentation of standards for genealogists. Sometimes a bit too concise. For anyone new to the field, a better choice might be the earlier standards manual by the BCG; The BCG Genealogical Standards Manual. There are more examples and more extensive explanations. But if you just need a small reference book for reminders, this is a must for any genealogist or family historian wanting to do good research and documentation.

It may relate the current standards, but it seems sparse. I prefer the format of the past Standards manual that also included examples, etc.

This gave a decent summary of standards but I was expecting something a little more in depth.

I kept trying to read this in the wrong places - hospital waiting room, airplane, etc. Every time I picked it up, I started over. Before I read it straight through, the new edition came out and I finished that. So this edition will likely never be completely read by me. It’s great - but read the new one.
