I quite loved this collection!! And it was so fun to read during the Christmas season! 4.5 stars to this lovely passel of novellas; I was surprised and delighted again and again by the sweetness, poignancy, endearing, and depth of these short stories. What admirable tales of faith!

I must confess, the first one, by Wanda E. Brunstetter, wasn't a favorite. I would probably give it about 3 stars on its on. It was interesting enough, and I liked the journaling part; but it seemed the author was trying too hard to leave us in suspense over which young man the lady of the story would choose ... and though these are romances, there was zero romance. Like no interaction between the man and woman who ended up together at all! I was rather shocked when she declared her love ... I had no idea whatsoever! So yes, it just wasn't a favorite for me.

However, the rest were quite cute and fun and exciting! And heart-touching! I really enjoyed all of them; but I think The Christmas Bread was my favorite. Not your typical Christmas story, but oh so powerful! It was a very beautiful story of trial, love, and faith. God is so good and faithful! ^_^

It was wonderful to see men and women in each story with strong faith, and who weren't ashamed to talk about, or call on the name of their God.

Most of the stories' romances would be for perhaps a Janette Oke audience; but there was one or two containing a little more mature romance themes and content.

Some stories were all sweetness, some had danger and intrigue, others hardship that produced the deepest of joy. The Westward Christmas Brides Collection is a memorable Christmas collection, and I'm quite pleased to have it on my bookshelf!

Should Caroline trust him and let her children and maybe herself fall for this handsome ‘Pirate’?

I enjoyed reading this book filled with nine short historical romances. The stories, dialogue and different characters give each book its own unique feel. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good short Christian Historical Romances, some with Pirates, Soldiers, debutants, or just your everyday run of the mill people. I was given a copy of this book from bookfun.org (TBCN) for my honest opinion.

I haven't read every story in the book, but what I've read, I love.

This was a really enjoyable collection of Christmas "on the trail" reads. The first story had a surprise ending, and the final story was a bit different - as the hero was a pirate. Overall, a great highly recommended read!

Christmas Bounty
By: MaryLu Tyndall
Awesome. Just when you think MaryLu Tyndall could not pen better than the last book you read of hers, well she has done it again.
Christmas Bounty is an awesome story. Takes place in California 1855. This is not your ordinary pirate story . This is a short novella and it is very good. I had no problems following the authors or the characters. Caroline has lost her husband in an accident. His dream was
to own and run a vineyard. They had two children and Caroline is having a hard time with the vineyard and feeding her children. She cannot believe that God would let her children go hungry. She needs help. Dante Vaga is a pirate and has been caught. There is one thing that will keep him from being hanged. Will Caroline and her children get the help they need? What happens to Dante ? Will they have a good Christmas?
I was given a copy of this book by the author for my honest review, and I have given it.

Overall, I really enjoyed this collection of novellas set in the 1800s in the western United States (or what was then termed such). I liked how many of the stories included memories and traditions from past Christmases of the characters.
My favourite of the 9 stories were the 5 that didn't include a rushed/insta romance kind of thing. These authors either told their stories from the point of view of their characters already having known each other previous to the story's start, or allowed their stories to take place over a sufficient time for the characters to actually *know* each other and grow to love each other, rather than simply just being attracted/infatuated. (Perhaps I'm an old curmudgeon, but after being married for almost 2 decades, stories that don't give the couple time enough to really get beyond: 'Hi, you're cute/hot . . . I'm intrigued by you and have a crush on you' and call *that* love? Well, they're wrong about what real love is, and they irk me! haha)
My top 3 stories (in no particular order) were: Christmas Bread, Christmas Bounty, and Christmas, Maybe.

Reading this for the first time in 2018, but never quite making it to the last two stories, I re-read it again in 2019, but with much the same result, so after reading one of my favourite stories in this collection for the third time this year, I thought I might as well go ahead and mark it as read here. The majority of the entries are just as heart-warming and romantic as one might hope, my particular favourites being Forging a Family by Vickie McDonough, A Stagecoach Christmas by Cathy Liggett & Another Christmas Story by Susan Paige Davis.

UPDATE (26/12/20): I can now officially say I have completed reading this collection in its entirety, and while the heroine of Jennifer Rogers Spinola's The Christmas Bread annoyed me no end, I completely ADORED MaryLu Tyndall's brilliant Christmas Bounty... with an intensely swoony love story, fantastically written redemption story, and the absolutely heart-melting relationship Dante forms with Caroline's children, this one reminded me of why I really need to read more of this author's stories!

Sweet stories, wonderful authors!

A delightful collection of novellas from nine very talented authors. I enjoyed each of these stories and the cheery Christmas tone.

I loved the westward theme of each of these stories. And I think my favorite was The Christmas Bread partly because it featured the Bozeman Trail. I also really enjoyed not only the date span of the stories, ranging all through the 1800's, but the variety in locations from California to Texas to Missouri to Nebraska and what would later become Wyoming.

Each novella is a quick read and can easily be finished in a sitting. I read them almost like very long chapters. Perfect for relaxing on a cold and snowy day.

An all around enjoyable collection of Christmasy historical romances!

The Westward Christmas Brides Collection is 442 pages of wonderful, entertaining reading. Nine different stories are included by nine different authors averaging about 50 pages per story. Even though each story is it's own, there are similarities in each one. There were very strong heroine characters, each finding love whether they were looking for it or not, the Christmas season coming up, snow stranding the characters in seven of the stories, and adventure galore!
A Christmas Prayer by Wanda Brunstetter: three wagons heading west get delayed, then find themselves stranded in the mountains by a snowstorm. Cynthia is concerned with the welfare of her mother and agrees to marry Walter mainly because he has money and she knows he can provide for both of them. Walter is kind of self-centered and butts heads with Cole, the wagon leader, and Jack a widower with two children. When the snow becomes impossible to drive the wagons through, Cole finds an abandoned shack that they all find cover in to wait out the storm and also spend Christmas there. Christmas Eve comes and they encounter an older man, stocky built carrying a large sack over his back, hmmmm.....
Another Christmas Story by Susan Page Davis: Beryl, her brother Sam, and her father are all traveling west with a wagon train. When her father is injured in a hunting accident, the three of them must stay behind at a trading post rather than try to continue with the wagon train. Mr and Mrs Lassen run the trading post store along with their son James. Soon Beryl and Sam lose their father and don't know what's going to happen to them. They continue to stay at the post through Christmas helping out anyway they can. Mr Lassen leaves to collect his yearly supplies for the post, leaving the four of them alone. What happens when some gruff men show up at the post? Does romance bloom for James and Beryl? What happens to Mr. Lassen on his way back?
The Reluctant Runaway by Melanie Dobson: Lavinia has been pressured into marrying someone she does not care for. He is only after her inheritance by way of her stepbrother. She flees on the train barely missing her stepbrother catching her at the station. He is in hot pursuit and she finds herself alone in a small mining town with very little money. She finds shelter in a barn that she thinks is abandoned. The owner finds her sleeping in his barn but does not let on that it belongs to him. When her stepbrother catches up with her by way of a very large reward, what will the results be? Will she be forced into marrying against her will? Or will she be rescued and find love?
A Stagecoach Christmas by Cathy Liggett: Molly is heading west to her aunt's home for Christmas. She has promised herself in marriage to a man she has only known through letters. The stagecoach stalls in the rain, the driver having fallen off the coach in a heap. A stranger happens by, Samuel Harden, who obviously just wants to go on his own way, but finds himself helping Molly carry the driver to safety inside the stagecoach with the guests inside. I was the most impressed with Molly when she was determined to drive the stagecoach herself even though she had never done so before. The rain and mud prevents them from going much further so the stranger just happens to know where a cabin is that they can take shelter in from the elements. Christmas is drawing near and then snow begins to fall. Will Molly make her destination? What happens among the whole group as the holiday approaches?
Forging a Family by Vickie McDonough: I had never heard of an orphan train agent until I read this story. Apparently they were popular during this period of time. Beth is such an agent traveling with her young charge and her doctor father. They are heading west but get stuck in a small town in a snowstorm. Lizzie, her charge needs a forever home, but so far Beth has been unable to find one for her. A blacksmith in the town has a very young daughter that gets injured in his shop. The doctor takes care of her but the blacksmith, Cade, feels so guilty and even contemplates giving Annie up since he can't take care of her and work. His wife has passed away and left him with all this responsibility. He loves his daughter and only wants the best for her. Will Beth, Lizzie and her father travel on after all weather danger has past? Will Cade give up his only daughter?
Snow Song by Olivia Newport: Belinda decides to travel by train to visit her cousin for the holidays after her boyfriend does not show up for their engagement party with her parents. She thinks he has jilted her not knowing he had no choice in order to help out a friend. On board the train she discovers him traveling with a young child. She is determined not to speak to him. The train gets stalled on the tracks in a blizzard. Help is coming but in the meantime the male travelers are asked to help dig out the wheels on the tracks that are covered with snow. Food is running short, tempers are flaring and an elderly passenger has gotten sick. Does Hayden and Belinda make up? What happens with the child? And what about the sick passenger?
Christmas Maybe by Janet Spaeth: Suzette leaves her home and her intended to travel to Dakota Territory to help her cousin with her newborn. Her cousin has a fall that results in a broken leg and arm. Suzette loves the adventure and freedom she feels away from her parents. Harrison, the accountant and intended, follows her out there and buys a store in the small town. Suzette is not very happy with the turn of events. Does she really know the true Harrison or is there more for them to learn about each other?
The Christmas Bread by Jennifer Rogers Spinola: Juliet is trapped in a wagon train that has circled around in protection from the Cheyenne Indians. They have been in this predicament for several weeks with no where to go. Jacob develops a plan for Juliet and her family to slip away during the night, because staying could mean sure death for them all. The rest of the train is not agreeable to the plan thus the secrecy. They quietly crawl away during the on their hands and knees into the mountains. They travel by night and cat nap during the day. What little they were able to carry is stolen by bandits. They become weak, hungry and hardly able to continue. How do they find themselves in the tent of the Crow Indians with Jacob near death?
Christmas Bounty by MaryLu Tyndall: After Caroline's husband passes away, she is left to care for her two young children and the vineyard that was her late husbands dream. They go into the lawless town of Santa Barbara to purchase food with their meager amount of money, needing so much more than they can afford. There is about to be a hanging of a pirate by the name of Dante. She tries to steer her children away but her son cuts lose heading in the direction of the hanging. She must follow then recognizes the man Dante. He once saved her family from pirates that attacked the ship they were on. When asked if anyone would marry him to save him from the gallos and make a decent man out of him, Caroline finds herself speaking up. Next thing she knows she finds herself married to a pirate. She wants his protection from those trying to steal or destroy her vineyard. He's just glad to find his hide saved from death. He's trying to raise enough money to buy his pirate ship back, she just wants to provide for her children and save her vineyard. Do these two manage to work things out or go their separate ways?
I enjoyed all of these novellas, some more than others, but they were all excellent and a fun way to learn some about the past, the struggles of the pioneers, and to get in the Christmas spirit.

The Westward Christmas Brides is a collection of nine Historical Romances that span from Midwest Missouri all the way to the shores of California in the 1800’s. Each one is written by a different author and lasts roughly 50 pages. At a quick glance, the authors are Wanda E. Brunstetter, Susan Page Davis, Melanie Dobson, Cathy Liggett, Vickie McDonough, Olivia Newport, Janet Spaeth, Jennifer Spinola and Mary Lu Tyndall.

A brief summary:
I enjoyed the collection as a whole. The stories were written well, had interesting characters and supporting characters and I felt like each story developed nicely and had a fitting conclusion. Some of the questions I ask myself when reading a collection like this are: are the stories too similar? Do the ways the hero and heroine come together change from story to story or does variety lack? Does each story have its own voice or do they mimic each other too closely? To answer those questions, I believe that each story was its own. Yes, there were some similarities but nothing that had me thinking it was boring. Of course, some authors were better in making their story stand out than others – but all was done well. I have given this book a five star rating because I enjoyed the stories and may revisit them during Christmastime!

More In-Depth:
A Christmas Prayer by Wanda E. Brunstetter
The main setting of this story was a small wagon train heading west trying to catch up to a larger group of wagons. The girl in the story was going to California with her mother and the man she was engaged to, but when a bad blizzard had their small company seeking shelter in an “abandoned” cabin in the mountains she learned that her heart really loved another. This one was a little slow going at first and probably wasn’t the strongest choice to be the first story in the collection but I liked the way it turned out. It painted a picture of ordinary characters and gave a good description of what life on the trail was like.

Another Christmas Story by Susan Page Davis
This story begins with a wagon train and then moves into what life is like living at an outpost (basically a general store in the wildness where folks on the trail would re-stock supplies at.) Our heroine and her little brother have to spend the winter at an outpost with the family who runs it when their father is injured on the trail and dies. She ends up marrying the family’s son. This was a very charming story, albeit a sad one. I was drawn to the hero and how his personality was a little more bashful than most we’ll run into in this collection.

The Reluctant Runaway by Melanie Dobson
Lavinia runs away from her controlling brother in Omaha who is trying to force her to marry one of his friends to a small town in Colorado where she tries to survive on her own. While there, she ends up falling in love with a gentleman who owns a mine. I enjoyed the plot and how Lavinia learned to trust again. It was quite suspenseful at the end when her brother finds her – you definitely want to know what happens! Is she forced to marry her brothers gambling friend or does she get to marry Isaac?

A Stagecoach Christmas by Cathy Liggett
This story is set in Missouri where a handful of people on a stagecoach are caught in an ice storm and have to seek refuge in the very home the hero was trying to run away from. As much as I enjoyed the spunk Molly portrayed and how she won Samuel’s heart, it was the supporting characters that really made this story come alive to me. Even though I’m pretty sure that Missouri has never had enough snow as the author portrayed (trust me, I live here!) this was one of my favorites from the book.

Forging A Family by Vickie McDonough
Beth is working as an agent with the Children’s Aid Society on her way to the Arizona Territory with her father and the orphan train when a bridge collapses and they are stuck in a small Texas town around Christmastime. Cade works as a blacksmith but has difficulties watching his young daughter after his wife died. Over the time that Beth and her father are in Texas she falls in love with Cade. This story was well written – my only complaint was that it didn’t feel very Christmas like. (That may have had to do with the Texas setting.)

Snow Song by Olivia Newport
This story was another favorite for me! I loved how the author took the characters and put them in a completely different situation than most of the stories in this collection. Instead of falling in love with a man the heroine just met, we meet Belinda already engaged to a wonderful guy…she just has some doubts about him. The story behind how Belinda overcomes those doubts and reassures herself that this is the man she can’t live without is one of the best in this book!

Christmas Maybe by Janet Spaeth
The stories at the end of this collection get better and better. This was another one I really enjoyed! The girl we meet in these pages longs for adventure but the man her family has picked out for her is anything but adventurous…he’s flat out mundane and boring. So when she travels to spend the holidays with her brother and his wife in the Dakota’s, she discovers a different side to the man she is expected to marry. I thought this was a really sweet story and loved the way the author described certain emotions and feelings the characters experienced. This was my first time to read from Janet Spaeth and I really enjoyed her style.

The Christmas Bread by Jennifer Rogers Spinola
This story began a little slow for me, but by the end I was hooked! The way the author kept tying in the concept of “bread” in the story was pure genius and kept the theme moving. This was one of the longer stories in the book but what I appreciated most was how the Indians (Crow tribe) was interwoven in the plot and setting. Truly, our history of the West would not be complete without the Indians and I am glad that they were included in this collection.

Christmas Bounty by Mary Lu Tyndall
While many of the stories had California (or a state in the surrounding area) as the place characters were going, this one is actually set in California…the ultimate West. The Historical information set forth in this story drew me in immediately. At that time period, California had a heavy Mexican influence with large ranches where drama and power reigned supreme. So here we have a window, her two children, the deceased husband’s vineyards, jealous neighbors and no way to protect the harvest. How far would you go to provide for your family? Marry a pirate sentenced to hang? Let’s just say that this story had me on the edge of my seat until the final page. The story was a lot different from the others but that’s why I liked it so much, it added variety to the bunch and gave me a different view of the West in 1855.

These novellas were all unique, and yet centered on the theme of Christmas being spent in the West portion of America. Many were pioneers, and making their way to enhance and build our nation. I was able to read a copy of this book via Overdrive, but it did not in any way affect my review. All opinions are my own.

This is a collection of historical stories of Christian romance that are centered around the Christmas holiday. The featured female characters are traveling westward toward a new life, leaving the past behind. Each story is written by a different author, and the themes vary as much as the authors' personalities. A strong Christian theme is woven throughout these stories of love and the ambiance of Christmas.

These short stories make up a wonderful holiday collection of cozy reads. I thoroughly enjoyed picking up this book and reading a story in the evenings as I relaxed and became swept into the lives of these young women searching for change and new lives. I normally enjoy a full-length novel over a novella or short story, but I found it refreshing to enjoy a brief tale of Christmas romance. Pick up a few copies to share with friends, and keep a copy for yourself to enjoy with a cup of your favorite beverage. This would make a wonderful gift, a book to be kept on the coffee table or next to your favorite chair, to pick up and enjoy as time allows. I will undoubtedly read this book again as the holidays approach each year.

Take the journey into the American west alongside nine women who are chasing their dream
The Westward Christmas Brides Collection is a wonderful collection of nine novellas all rolled into one book. The books feature wonderful authors like Wanda Brunstetter, MaryLu Tyndall, Olivia Newport and many more. The stories are about fifty pages each and can be read in a short time. Each story stands alone, and does not connect to the other.
What is there not to love in a book where all nine stories center on Christmas and brides? What made this collection particularly interesting is the wonderful variety of stories and characters featured. You get to step into the world of pirates, westward wagons, mining towns, stagecoaches, trading posts, train rides, and small towns from the west. Each story was excellent and I would have a hard time choosing a favorite.
I love the look of this book. The sepia cover and the cut of the pages give it the feel of a book published long ago. I felt I was stepping back in time.
I highly recommend reading The Westward Christmas Brides Collection to put you in the Christmas spirit.

MaryLu Tyndall, most known for her pirate stories, has crafted a sweet Christmas romance story that takes place in the state of California and features a handsome pirate hero who falls in love with a beautiful widow and her two children. The only problem is, Caroline Moreau wants nothing to do with him, albeit she needs the protection of a man. Strange things have been happening, threatening her home, her children, and her livelihood. With that in mind, she proposes marriage to save his life in exchange for the security of his presence on her property…and that’s all she wants. But Dante Vega has ideas of his own. Despite his wife’s sharp tongue and the fact that she keeps her distance from him, Dante loses his heart to her, making him vow to win hers. Hopefully in time for Christmas.

I totally loved this story! And while it takes place in the Old West, I thought it was so neat how MaryLu was able to incorporate a pirate hero into the story. Well done, MaryLu!

This book was right up my alley! I love Christmas and historical Christian books..so
When you combine the two..I smile and begin to read.
This book is a collection of stories from
9 authors. I really haven't been a fan of these kind of books but was drawn to the cover, genre and the fact that one story was written by MaryLu Tyndall ( one of my favorite authors).

Such great stories and this boom will go on my shelf to read again and again. I enjoyed all of the stories but MaryLu Tyndall's was my favorite. A sweet story about a poor widow and her 2 children that needed protection from men that are trying to destroy their vineyard and a pirate about to lose his life. MaryLu eloquently weaves in God's amazing love and what a gift of salvation He has given each of us.

The other authors did a great job too...Wanda Brunstetter, Susan Page Davis and Olivia Newport are a few of the other authors. This is a perfect gift to share, donate to a senior citizen's home, battered women's shelter or for yourself. I sure enjoyed it and it blessed me to read it.

I have a love-hate feeling about novella collections because the stories often seem rushed and just when I start to care about the characters, the story ends. But I've also discovered authors I love by first reading one of their stories in a novella collection.

Such is the case with MaryLu Tyndall, whose story Christmas Bounty was my favorite in this book.

I wish I could rate the stories individually. Some I loved; others were just okay. But overall, this book is a great way to get in the mood for Christmas. You'll be wishing for an old-fashioned Christmas by the time you're done!

I just finished reading this anthology full of fantastic stories. Each story was so heartwarming that I had to keep reading until I had read them all. Each of these authors are some of the best writers that I have ever had the pleasure of reading their stories. I love historical romances and I love Christmas stories. It doesn't get any better. I give this anthology a 5/5. I was given this book for the purpose of a review and all opinions are my own.

1. A Christmas Prayer by Wanda E. Brunstetter
Dec 20, 2023
5 stars

I've never heard of a wagon train being only 3 wagons before, but they sure had enough problems and difficulties for a full wagon train! Their faith in God gave the majority of them the strength to make the best of things. Only the unbelievers seemed to constantly be miserable! I was surprised by the way everything turned around in the end.

2. Another Christmas Story by Susan Page Davis

I loved this story, despite their pains and losses, it was a beautiful story of hope! And that boy Sam was an extraordinary child! I've never heard of anyone with those capabilities at such a young age! The ending was a bit abrupt though. I wish there was a follow-up story!

3. The Reluctant Runaway by Melanie Dobson

What a sad situation she's in til her father's lawyer finally responds. Then she learns the whole truth. Both from Isaac and Mr. Tipton! A happy ever after for everyone, well, almost everyone.

4. A Stagecoach Christmas by Cathy Liggett

Lots of emotions is this story as they keep secrets that threaten to break them apart, but, God has brought this group together, to be a true family, a family created by circumstance, loss, hope, faith and His love!

5. Forging a Family by Vickie McDonough

I loved this story about a train load of passengers getting stranded in the little town of Advent, TX. But, God caused the storm that raged and the hope that blossomed here. The doctor's care brings a couple of orphans together and the doctor's daughter sets them in a family, her family! Such a sweet ending!

6. Snow Song by Olivia Newport

I feel cheated because we never got the reason, but I loved the rest of the story. Although I hated Belinda hurting so. Unfortunately, I could relate to her pain. Eloise is the most articulate 6 year old I've ever heard of.

7. Christmas, Maybe by Janet Spaeth

What a delightful story! They didn't know each other at all, until...
Hope
And what a perfect couple they turned out to be!!

8. The Christmas Bread by Jennifer Rogers Spinola

5 stars

I absolutely adored all the connections regarding God and his promises! Despite their difficult and then dire circumstances, God is still worthy of being glorified and His promises are always true! Written with the common language anyone could understand and yet the theology of a college degree from a seminary! I loved it!

9. Christmas Bounty by MaryLu Tyndall

5 stars

I've never read a book like this! I don't even know where to begin with describing the uniqueness of it. A man is seen, just moments from being hanged. He's a real pirate! But, at one time he showed kindness to her and her family when they were on a ship. Now she's a widow, desperate and then... Oh! I almost told you too much! But, you'll have to read it for yourself to find out more, and trust me, you won't regret it. Unless you just don't like Christian books, historical romances, adventures, multicultural tales, redemption stories, happy ever afters, and many other wonderful descriptions I could use to tell you more about this book!

I enjoyed all the stories in this collection. They are quite varied and have very different settings. If you like story collections, don’t miss this one.

A Christmas Prayer by Wanda E. Brunstetter
This happily-ever-after story is quite interesting in that it encompasses two young children, who have integral parts to play in the overall story. The setting is a small wagon train heading for California in 1850, with each person having different dreams of what the future might hold for him or her. The characters are interesting. I loved their simple Christmas celebration and the gifts that each one gave. I enjoyed this first story in the collection very much.

Another Christmas Story by Susan Page Davis
What a unique climax to the story! This story is overshadowed by sadness and loss, but has many wonderful moments and gestures by the characters. It seems very realistic and I was drawn in by the author’s attention to detail. My favorite character is James—not your typical hero, but so thoughtful, intelligent and kind.

The Reluctant Runaway by Melanie Dobson
I actually really like this story, however, I think it has great possibilities for a novel, rather than just a short story. Lavinia is an amazing heroine.

A Stagecoach Christmas by Cathy Liggett
I thoroughly enjoyed this story from 1849, set in Western Missouri. It illustrates the few choices that women of that era had. Molly is a feisty, young woman and a great heroine! She is definitely not your typical “victim of circumstances.” “What a trooper!”—is my way of putting it. She is amazing and deserves to have all her dreams come true.

Forging a Family by Vicki McDonough
I like the play on words for the title of this heart-wrenching story. The pieces of this story fit together like a well-loved puzzle.

Snow Song by Olivia Newport
Snow Song is a story about acceptance, forgiveness, and faith—in people and in God. It’s a story about some of the lowest lows, but ends on some of the highest highs. It’s an unusual and thought-provoking story.

Christmas Maybe by Janet Spaeth
This is a coming of age story about young people being called to the Wild West. It is quite amazing to see the struggle and hardship that young people willingly took upon themselves to accomplish their dreams.

The Christmas Bread by Jennifer Rogers Spinola
What a heart-rending and compelling story! I read it in one sitting. I couldn’t stop until I finished the complete story, which is not my normal habit. Very thought-provoking. I look forward to reading more books by this new-to-me author.

Christmas Bounty by MaryLu Tyndall
MaryLu Tyndall is one of my favorite authors, and this story is not a disappointment. I very much like the strong characters in Christmas Bounty—both the hero and the heroine. The children are a sweet addition. I especially appreciate the faith element.

ISBN 978-1-62836-812-3
Historical, Christian, Romance, Fiction

The Westward Christmas Brides Collection is nine Historical romances. Each novel is set in the west in the 1800’s. All are seeking a new life and a new place to call home. Each author has put their spin on the perfect Christmas for any bride. I have discovered a few new authors to me. I could never pick the best story because they are all fantastic. I give The Westward Christmas Brides Collection 5 stars, great job ladies. If you enjoy historical fiction I highly recommend The Westward Christmas Brides Collection to you.

A Christmas Prayer by Wanda E. Brunstetter
April 15, 1850 three covered wagons set out to travel the wild west from Independence, Missouri to the land of opportunity, California. All travelers are strangers from different walks of life. Cynthia Cooper travels with her mother Mabel and fiancée Walter. While Cynthia is fun loving and full of life her mother and Walter are spoiled snobs. Jack Simpson travels with his children 4 year old Alan and 6 year old Amelia. They come from Cedar Rapids, Iowa looking for a new beginning. Amelia has not spoken a word since witnessing the tragic death of her mother. Cole is a blacksmith from Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He is traveling with his adventurous sister Virginia. He wants to marry some day but wants to find gold first. She would love to teach again but needs to get away from the place she was jilted. As they make the long tedious journey the only thing that helps them survive is blind faith. This was a great story filled with faith.

Another Christmas Story by Susan Page Davis
Nineteen year old Beryl Jenner travels in a large train caravan through Nebraska Territory in 1856. When a tragic accident strikes, her and her young brother are stranded in Chiswell Rock at the trading post. The are left to survive by the kindness of strangers. James Lassen and his family do everything in their power to help the Jenner’s. They give and care for others like the Samaritan in the Bible. Not expecting anything in return but giving their all. This is a great story of compassion. I really enjoyed this story and found the author did an outstanding job.

The Reluctant Runaway by Melanie Dobson
Omaha, Nebraska December 1889 Lavinia Kathryn Starr is on the run from her evil step brother Patrick. As she boards a train for New York City Patrick closes in on her. She is on the run again this time on a train to parts unknown. Isaac Loritz sees Lavinia soon after he arrives in Aspen, Colorado, he offers his assistance but is turned down. Later when he finds her in his barn they form a friendship of sorts. As trust builds will their new friendship stands up to the pressure of money. This was a phenomenal story of trust and faith, with romance and a little trepidation.

A Stagecoach Christmas by Cathy Liggett
Western Missouri 1849 It wasn’t a knight on a white horse that showed up to rescue the passengers of the stagecoach but a rancher looking to start over running away from Christmas. They were headed to Huxley to join family and friends for Christmas when the weather stops them in their tracks. Charlotte Crandall and her elderly mother Ms Vivian, barrister Benjamin Cottingham and his 6 year old granddaughter Melissa and driver Daniel Becker like Molly all had big plans. Molly O’Brien was looking to start a new life only to find herself on a rowdy ride. Samuel Harden finds instant attraction to the spunky redheaded spitfire he rescues. The passengers of the stagecoach end up on a deserted ranch owned by Samuel and find their best Christmas yet. This was a great novel about grief turned to joy. I really related to the characters.

Forging a Family by Vickie McDonough
Advent, Texas 1890 Beth Ruskin, is a agent with the Children’s Aid Society, delivering kids to their new families. When a flash flood leaves her and her father stranded in Advent Texas, she helps her father care for patients. She first sets eye on the local blacksmith Cade Maddox when he brings a injured man to her father. It’s love at first sight for Beth. Cade struggles with caring for his young daughter a overworked single man. He wonders if own Orphan Train daughter would be better off with a regular family. This is fantastic story of love and sacrifice that all parents face. I fell in love with the characters and I am sure you will too.

Snow Song by Olivia Newport
1871 Belinda Michaels is heartbroken when Hayden Fairbanks does not show up for their engagement dinner. She is so hurt she hops a train to San Francisco only to run into him and a young child. When the train is snowed in all passengers and Belinda are left strained on the tracks. Can she find a way to trust Hayden again and give him another chance? Read this terrific book to find out. Olivia Newport is a new author to but I really enjoyed her story.

Christmas, Maybe by Janet Spaeth
For as long as Suzette Longmont can remember she has dreamed of the wild untamed nature of paradise, riding horseback with her hair blowing out behind her. But she was born into a life of privilege. She was expected to cook gourmet meals, keep a well decorated home for entertaining but she failed miserably. She jumps at the chance to help family in the Dakota Territory when relatives need help. Boring Harrison, the man that she was promised to marry in a arrangement marriage, decides to follow her there in fear of losing her forever. As she settles into a new routine she discovers there is more to Harrison than she ever thought. Can they make a relationship work? Read this faith filled novel to find out.

The Christmas Bread by Jennifer Rogers Spinola
September 1865 Juliet followed in her father footstep as a doctor. Jacob Pike a confederate war hero is on the same wagon train as Juliet. They face tragedy, sickness and are caught in the cross fires of a war that should be over. As they fight for their lives Juliet’s atrocity toward Jacob softens into something far more likeable, maybe even a fondness or love as the wagon train travels. This is a great story showing how nothing is impossible with God. By far this story will pull at your heartstrings like none of the others. I enjoyed my fist book by Jennifer Rogers Spinola very much.

Christmas Bounty by MaryLu Tyndal
Santa Barbara, California 1855 Caroline Moreau is a widowed mother of two, trying to keep her husbands dreams alive. But barely keeping Moreau Winery alive. As her and her children leave market they come across a public hanging in town square. They only thing that will save Pirate Dante Vega from hanging for his crimes is if a single lady will marry and make a decent man out of him. Caroline is in need of some one to protect her, the children and vineyard. Could Dante become the man of her dreams and save them? You will have to read this fantastic book to find out. Caroline is filled with a unbreakable faith that will inspire you. This was a glorious novel.

I want to give a high-five to the authors Wanda E. Brunstetter, Susan Page Davis, Melanie Dobson, Cathy Liggett, Vickie McDonough, Olivia Newport, Janet Spaeth, Jennifer Rogers Spinola, and Mary Lu Tyndall and publisher Barbour for bringing compelling Christian books that are entertaining and give hope to the reader with stories of faith. The Book Club Network Inc. provided me with this book in exchange for my honest review and I am so grateful for their, the authors and publishers generosity.

This collection is good for some light reading, especially around Christmas. I thought some of the stories were better written than others, but I still enjoyed them. I think this collection is one of the best I've read so far. One of my favorite's was MaryLu Tyndall's Christmas Bounty. She always write well-crafted stories, and this novella is no exception. The Reluctant Runaway by Melanie Dobson is also really good. I don't think I've read anything by her yet, but if her novels are as good as this novella, I need to read some soon. The Christmas Bread by Jennifer Rogers Spinola is also good, but I wish it was longer. The main character is well-developed, and I wanted to spend more time seeing her mature. But it's a sweet story, nonetheless, and packs some food for thought. A Stagecoach Christmas by Cathy Liggett is a sweet and poignant story about two people grappling with grief. Forging a Family by Vickie McDonough is also a really good story about a widower trying to give his daughter a better life, but he doesn't know how to do that without giving her up. I wish this had been longer because I didn't want to leave the characters.

I just randomly found this old review of the first story in this collection in a GoogleDoc. I remember wanting to continue with the collection, but I never ending up doing it in the last year and some change, so I guess that sums that up pretty good.

The review (of A Christmas Prayer):

This story was sweet enough. It was very basic and simple, and definitely very predictable, but I saw that coming. I do feel that it would’ve been a very fun read as a novel with all the side plots that were going on throughout it, but it was fine as a short story. There was nothing inherently wrong with it or anything that I would’ve really changed, so I feel I can’t really fault it for the fact that I believe it would’ve made a better novel than a short story. It just wasn’t amazing. It was entertaining while it lasted, but that’s all it was.

Good variety

This anthology was an enjoyable read. Each of the stories presented a different scenario of life in the American West when thousands of people left their homes in search of something more. In some stories, the characters had to overcome difficult physical hardships, while in others, they gained an appreciation of what they already had. I gained a greater appreciation for the pioneers and also discovered new authors whose other books will be added to my reading list.

Reading about these individuals going west, and all the challenges they faced, makes me appreciate the people who came before me. they lived with a lot of physical hardship that challenged their ability to hope. Most of the stories were well written a few had anachronisms like using the word allergies. They had me questioning how we could’ve done a better job of crossing culture of the cultural divide between settlers and Native Americans and taken better care of our natural resources, wild lands and wildlife. We still have not arrived at a point where we can say we treat all people worn equality and respect yet. Maybe we are trying ( well some of us anyway) to be a bit more honest about our history and outreach interactions with other people.
The frontier characters lived in the moment in s way we don’t may times. Are we anymore “civilized” than during the westward migration?
Relationships between men and women were decisive and necessary for survival.

An anthology set in the American West of the late 1800s, showing the difficulties faced by the settlers of this bygone era and their fortitude. Had been looking for a fast read for the holidays and this fit the bill. These stories included a heavy leaning toward Christianity, but as the stories centered on Christmas this was to be expected. It did provide easy reading, while making me grateful for living in 2019.
