This was my first experience reading an ebook...and frankly, it seemed an expensive way to buy a good read. I liked the serial approach...until I wanted to read more than once chapter a week! But Olivia Newport is one of my favorite authors, so I gave it a try. The free intro chapter was interesting, but the second chapter, well, not so much. I felt like so many scenes got started, but didn't have time to "ripen." In the midst of so many other books (at hand) that I could read whenever I wanted to, I let "Hidden Falls" slide. Then I picked up a virus and needed some "quiet" activities - back to Hidden falls I went. And was I ever glad I did!
The characters who seemed a little flat six months ago took on new liveliness as I reread chapters one and two, and plowed on through thirteen. Quinn, the center of attention, seemed almost too good to be true...but turns out to be a real flesh-and-blood guy at the end. I especially liked the development of Ethan, who came to understand his mom AND himself much better by the end of the book. I also enjoyed the relationship between mayor-cum-business woman, Sylvia, and her elderly mom, Emma, as they struggle with her memory loss. I look forward to seeing these characters' lives developed in the sequel as they take on new roles (*Spoiler alert! in marriage and/or new jobs). Dani also really appeals to me because she is that rare someone who can live without others' approval or involvement - or can she? She demonstrates a deep commitment to her extended family and friends, and I think she's at a place in her life where she's ready to take that a bit further, and share the reins of her life with the Lord. I wonder how much of her independence she can surrender, and what the cost might be?
I won't summarize the storyline here - there are plenty of places that's available. But what I would like to share is the pace of the book, which totally keeps your interest, and the variety of personalities which Newport weaves together in this appealing small town of Hidden Falls. True, these are the very points that first turned me off, but after spending a week in Hidden Falls, I can't wait to go back. The "red herrings" Newport throws into the mix and the twists in the plot, all make for a wonderfully engaging read.
Enjoyable story but the serial aspect distracted me. I had trouble getting all thirteen episodes from the library in order and in a timely manner. Good story though.
