I still remember the exact day I fell in love with reading. It was nighttime and raining. Mom and Dad had already sent me and my sister to bed. But I couldn't sleep. We didn't have cable (and I'm pretty sure the parents wouldn't allow it) and cartoons were over for the day. I remember turning on the light, looking across the room at my snoring sister and then at my bookcase filled with books. I wasn't a reader at the time, but my mother was. She was constantly buying me something. I walked over to the bookshelf and pulled my newest book off the shelf and just began to read. For the first time, I learned what it was to leave my room and go someplace else; to care about imaginary people so much, I had to turn the next page; to get so caught up in a story, hours flew by. And it is that exact feeling that I want so much to create in my readers. Enjoyment, entertainment, and feeling blessed.

This second book in the series did not disappoint!

Thank you for bringing such a sweet and tender perspective in the portraying your characters, and also I love the Christian element. It’s so nice to read a book that entertains, is informative, and can be read by just anyone.

I am an avid historical fiction reader because I love to learn. And as you probably have experienced for yourself, I am typically recommended books along the same venue so I have read many series on slavery and felt I have learned a lot about our history in this country, which I don’t think should be covered up as we need to learn from our history and our mistakes. I am also very very thankful for the Christianity slaves brought to our country and demonstrated: their faith, their music, and the moving and the fullness of the Holy Spirit for which I am forever grateful.

You also accomplished in your writing the ability for a young black girl to dream and feel good about herself. For that you should be proud.

Blessings to you and continued success in all areas of life you are pursuing! I’m getting ready to read book 3!

Love Found Through Resurrection Life

I continue to enjoy the Salis House Plantation series. Watching both Annie and Prince's growth and healing through incredibly difficult trials was deeply satisfying. The series continues to be both edifying and entertaining. I find the following quote to be an apt summation of the theme of all the books in this series:

"To believe in the resurrection of Jesus is to be comforted, comforted at a level so deep that nothing in life is ultimately a threat any longer...
The resurrection is not just something that happened to Jesus two thousand years ago... The resurrection is something that buoys up every moment of life and every aspect of reality. God is always making new life and undergirding it with a goodness, graciousness, mercy, and love that, in the end, heals all wounds, forgives all sins, and brings deadness of all kinds to new life."

Disappointing. After reading Book 1 of the series, I was really looking forward to learning "more about Arrow Creek, Oklahoma", as the author states at the end of A Quiet Strength. However, this was not the case.
Again, there were frequent misspellings, i.e. too rather than to. I've marked 23 such incidents of misspellings and other grammatical errors, noting that these are not the words of the uneducated slave or former slave. These are definitely errors in the book.
This book seems to have gotten stuck early in the story. A 6 month time frame was elaborated upon way too much, in my opinion. Rather, we should have moved on to the real reason for the story - runaway slaves.
I believe Ms. Susberry has the ability to write rather well, but this book left me thinking I don't need to read the 3rd book.

This one annoyed me...

I wanted to love this book, but ended up only liking it. While it was very well written, I've long been over the mixed-raced woman being the most beautiful in the land trope, even in historical romances. If I had to hear about Annie being the most beautiful woman anyone had ever seen again, I would have stopped reading the series as a whole. The way the author made sure that all the monoracial women talked about how they knew they'd never be as beautiful as Annie was so off-putting, I could barely enjoy the story.

Overall, Prince was my favorite character. Annie could be annoying at times. I must say I enjoyed Sam's and Laura's story more. Still, I'm going to move on to book 3, but I swear if anyone mentions how Annie is the most beautiful woman they've ever seen in book 3, I'm done with the series.

Even better!

I knew I'd love this story! I liked Prince' character from the first book 'A Quiet Strength'. Something about his cocky, misguided attitude, but obvious love for his sister drew me to him. I also loved Annie, and was so sad when she was left behind, but this story absolutely made up for it. Their little makeshift family did wonders for my heart, and for Prentiss' heart too. Although we do get a glimpse into the hard times they faced, their own individual reasons for making this dangerous journey, we get a beautiful, exciting adventure to watch unfold. The transformation of Prentiss to Papa is too good to miss. Do yourselves a favor ladies and gentlemen, and give this series a try. You won't be disappointed.

Prentiss/Prince, Annie, Noble and Venture's adventure was a gem. As Dismal as The Dismal Swamp, it cultivated a beautiful romance between Prince and Annie. I laughed and fell in love with Noble and Venture and knew that Prince would too. Such great characters all around and I love that Logan will never have his way again. The blow that Prince leveled him with will have him wondering until the rest of his days and that to me is the best revenge. Great read! I'm ready for Manny to meet his match in the next book.

This is one of the best historical romances that I've read in a long time. I love this author's work. I enjoyed how she sprinkled some history into the story, the great dismal swamp and the Nat Turner rebellion. I did not like Prince in the first book, but he redeemed himself and became such an endeering character. If you love historical fiction/romance with amazing african american charater you need to read this book. 5+ perfect!

A Good Time Was Had!

I knew when I chose this series it was going to be not only good, but I was going to get a few characters that were going to just stick with you. Well Prince and Annie are two characters that not only worked in the big house but they were subject to the crazy of two men. This kind of.love was special and it was so very entertaining to see it develop in its entirety. This was not.only.excellent.storytelling but it was just really good writing.

I love the book . I love this authors story telling. She tells the story with a more positive view of a slave . She does not glorify it , however she give the person a reason to want to better them selves. It shows their courage to live a better life at any cost . The characters are great. The new information you learn about different ways of getting to survive is amazing. I had never heard of that island that Prince and Annie went to existed . Great book. Looking forward to book #3.

Refreshing

This book in the series was very refreshing. I rendered a plethora of emotions was the main characters fought on their journey to freedom. From stock and discuss to love and joy! This story was more than love and forgiveness. It addressed the struggle of leaving slavery and submitting to being a slave for Christ. Leaving a master who treated you less than an animal and learning to trust The Master with your soul. A very well written piece!

One of my favorites..

I don't have a number for the many books I have read about the civil war and slavery. Too many to recollect. But this story will be one of my all time favorites I believe. It takes the reader to many new levels by bringing the runaway slaves to the dismal swamp. Amazingly, this was a real place and many personal stories had to have been lived out there...in freedom, yes, but with much danger, uncertainty and challenges. So glad to have found this book.

Christian Fiction, who knew!

I don’t have an affinity for a lot of Christian fiction because it’s usually dull! However, I accidentally found this series with book 4 Ana fell in love with Hagar and Sly. I knew that I wanted to read the entire series. I was actually really thrilled to see Prince had his own book. This was not a disappointment. I fell in love with this one as well.

A Quiet Peace!!

A Quiet Peace (Book 2) is as Compelling and Intriguing as Book #1!
WOW!! I Love Prince, his Strong Willed Personality on the Plantation and the Mature Christian man he became while at the Swamp. To the Loving Husband and Father he ended up becoming when he Finally Reunited with his People/Family.

This book helps to dispel the myth that the house slave had it so great. The women were constantly being raped and mistreated. These stories should require reading for all high school students

I loved the complexity of the characters
I will never understand how enslaved people could have so much undying faith.

My favorite of the three (so far) I've read in this series; mostly because Prince is such a fascinating character and fun to read about as he goes on a physical and spiritual journey. I especially enjoyed the evolution of his relationship with Annie's sons. I would have liked to see more of his relationship with his "master"/father; which twisted him but made him particularly resourceful and watchful; and perhaps some development of his relationship with his young white half-sister Adora (who seems to like and respect him and know of their blood kinship). The dichotomy between Prince's relationship with his late biological father and with his fellow-slave foster father is well written, and addressed as the novel progresses, and reflected to some degree in Prince's relationship with Annie's boys.

A Rough Road to Freedom

This story was totally believable and engrossing. One could easily find oneself shadowing the characters throughout the plantation sympathizing with the plight of the characters. It was a story that free me in and would not release me until the happy ending.

So Good

Sweet wholesome with plenty adventure. I had heard some slaves ran to the swamps to be free, but the everyday undertakings of this life were intriguing. I will read the whole series.

New info?

I really enjoyed this book. I had never heard of the Dismal Swap. What fun it has been to learn about a “new” place in history that I can look up real info! This was a great book and I read it sorta fast. I was disappointed that it wasn’t longer. Smiles!

A Quiet Peace ( Walks House Plantation book 2)

This book was as good as the first one, Prince came to his senses to run after master Richard had died. Not until he had found the Will and read it.
