237 books410 followersDaniil Ivanovich Yuvachev (Даниил Хармс) was born in St. Petersburg, into the family of Ivan Yuvachev, a well known member of the revolutionary group, The People's Will. By this time the elder Yuvachev had already been imprisoned for his involvement in subversive acts against the tsar Alexander III and had become a religious philosopher, acquaintance of Anton Chekhov during the latter's trip to Sakhalin.
Daniil invented the pseudonym Kharms while attending high school at the prestigious German "Peterschule". While at the Peterschule, he learned the rudiments of both English and German, and it may have been the English "harm" and "charm" that he incorporated into "Kharms". Throughout his career Kharms used variations on his name and the pseudonyms DanDan, Khorms, Charms, Shardam, and Kharms-Shardam, among others. It is rumored that he scribbled the name Kharms directly into his passport.
In 1924, he entered the Leningrad Electrotechnicum, from which he was expelled for "lack of activity in social activities". After his expulsion, he gave himself over entirely to literature. He joined the circle of Aleksandr Tufanov, a sound-poet, and follower of Velemir Khlebnikov's ideas of zaum (or trans-sense) poetry. He met the young poet Alexander Vvedensky at this time, and the two became close friends and inseparable collaborators.
In 1927, the Association of Writers of Children's Literature was formed, and Kharms was invited to be a member. From 1928 until 1941, Kharms continually produced children's works and had a great success.
In 1928, Daniil Kharms founded the avant-garde collective OBERIU, or Union of Real Art. He embraced the new movements of Russian Futurism laid out by his idols, Khlebnikov, Kazimir Malevich, and Igor Terentiev, among others. Their ideas served as a springboard. His aesthetic centered around a belief in the autonomy of art from real world rules and logic, and the intrinsic meaning to be found in objects and words outside of their practical function.
By the late 1920s, his antirational verse, nonlinear theatrical performances, and public displays of decadent and illogical behavior earned Kharms — who always dressed like an English dandy with a calabash pipe — the reputation of being a talented but highly eccentric “fool” or “crazy-man” in Leningrad cultural circles.
Even then, in the late 20s, despite rising criticism of the OBERIU performances and diatribes against the avant-garde in the press, Kharms nurtured a fantasy of uniting the progressive artists and writers of the time (Malevich, Filonov, Terentiev, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Kaverin, Zamyatin) with leading Russian Formalist critics (Tynianov, Shklovsky, Eikhenbaum, Ginzburg, etc.,) and a younger generation of writers (all from the OBERIU crowd—Alexander Vvedensky, Konstantin Vaginov, Nikolai Zabolotsky, Igor Bakhterev), to form a cohesive cultural movement of Left Art. Needless to say it didn't happen that way.
Kharms was arrested in 1931 together with Vvedensky, Tufanov and some other writers, and was in exile from his hometown (forced to live in the city of Kursk) for most of a year. He was arrested as a member of "a group of anti-Soviet children's writers", and some of his works were used as an evidence. Soviet authorities, having become increasingly hostile toward the avant-garde in general, deemed Kharms’ writing for children anti-Soviet because of its absurd logic and its refusal to instill materialist and social Soviet values.
He continued to write for children's magazines when he returned from exile, though his name would appear in the credits less often. His plans for more performances and plays were curtailed, the OBERIU disbanded, and Kharms receded into a very private writing life. He wrote for the desk drawer, for his wife, Marina Malich, and for a small group of friends, the “

Non è un libro per persone seriose (Ahò!! Ho detto seriose, non serie)
I pro e i contro.
I pro: non so se l'appendice di Paolo Nori, anche nell'edizione "Marcos y Marcos" sia alla fine del libro. Nel qual caso, vi consiglio di leggerla prima di iniziare il libro, e non dopo; leggere prima la vita di Charms raccontata da Nori, aumenta la salivazione e rende la lettura più gustosa.
I contro: se avete l'edizioni Adelphi, anziché l'edizione Einaudi e Marcos y Marcos, siete forse più fortunati. Il fatto che la creativa sregolatezza dello stile "Noriano" traspaia anche nella "cura"del libro, e che la sua postfazione sia scritta alla "Charms", è troppo approssimativa riguardo a un autore che forse meriterebbe più attenzione. Indubbiamente a Charms piacerebbe, ma considerando che a leggere il libro siamo noi.. beh, fate un po' voi.
Di seguito invece, alcune indicazioni utili per il pubblico pagante e non:
- Se non vi piace la rubrica "Risate a denti stretti" della Settimana Enigmistica, non leggete questo libro.
- Se non vi piace il grottesco (inteso come stile, e non come pittura rupestre paleolitica) non leggete questo libro.
- Se non vi piace questo motivetto: "E infine il Signore, sull'angelo della morte, sul macellaio,
che uccise il toro, che bevve l'acqua, che spense il fuoco,
che bruciò il bastone, che picchiò il cane, che morse il gatto,
che si mangiò il topo che al mercato mio padre comprò." non leggete questo libro.
- Se non vi piacciono le situazioni paradossali, non leggete questo libro.
- Se non vi piace Paolo Nori, non leggete questo libro. Perché il libro appunto è curato da lui e si vede.
- Se non vi piace il non sense non leggete questo libro.
- Se non vi piace l'avanguardia russa, perché in fondo siete dei totalitaristi che non ammettono opinioni contrastanti e vi piacciono le cose uniformi, precisine, e pure in fila, non leggete questo libro, anzi, non leggete per niente.
- Se non vi piace questa barzelletta: "Bambino si sbuccia ginocchio... e se lo mangia!" non leggete questo libro.
- Se vi piacciono le cose convenzionali, appena vedete questo libro, pronunciate a voce alta per tre volte, "VADE RETRO SATAN, VADE RETRO SATAN, VADE RETRO SATAN".

My brother used to read this book to me when I was little. He is 20 years younger than me. He still hasn't learned how to read. He also doesn't know how to speak. In fact, I don't even have a brother, so maybe it's best not to talk about him anymore.

I didn’t get this at first. The cover’s ugly, the edition nasty, and in the introduction someone called Simon McBurney writes about hearing Tom Waits on the radio while stuck in a traffic jam near Vine Avenue in L.A.. (Heartattack and Vine’s a favourite of mine too, friend, but some decorum, please!) Anyhow, eventually the penny dropped. Turns out Mr McBurney had some good advice after all: read it to children. And one day when my hyperactive eight-year old stepson wouldn’t sit still I tried it. I read:
Now this is exactly the little boy in question’s brand of humour, and maybe just from the thrill of hearing it read aloud – from an ‘adult’ book nonetheless – he was giggling with delight by the second or third paragraph. But by the fifth, he was ecstatic. And his older brother (ten years old) took an interest and came closer and they both egged me on, and I read aloud until they started with the questions, and somehow, I ended up telling them what little I knew of Kharms’s life story: that he starved to death in a prison hospital a few blocks from his home in St Petersburg in 1942 after defying a ban on his writing. Isn’t that crazy? we all agreed: that Stalin would have cared that anyone wrote or published these crazy stories. The boys were astonished. And crazier still, despite the ban, he was allowed to write children’s stories. As if children were any less susceptible to his humour than adults! Me, I didn’t really laugh until the boys laughed, and then I laughed as much at the boys as at the writing. It’s freeing them! It’s firing them up! They see that anything’s possible! Stalin was an idiot to let Kharms anywhere near Russia’s children, if he feared this poison spreading.
On my second and third readings of some of these ‘incidences’ I think Kharms is an important rediscovery – up there with Krzhizhanovsky, and maybe more unique and more accessible. Imagine if Ernest Scribbler – the man who wrote the funniest joke in the world in a Monty Python skit and died laughing – had been a disciple of Hamsun and Gogol, forced to whisper his life’s works to his neighbours lest the authorities see them in print. And the police – kitted in earplugs – are working to isolate the joke in the rubbish-strewn courtyard, where the neighbours fall around laughing. And the tanks are rolling through Nevsky Prospect on their way to liquidate the infected.

Kalugin woke up, put a newspaper under his head, so as not to wet the pillow with his dribblings, and went to sleep again; and again he had a dream that he was sitting in some bushes and a policeman was walking past the bushes.
Kalugin woke up, changed the newspaper, lay down and went to sleep again. He fell asleep and had another dream that he was walking past some bushes and a policeman was sitting in the bushes.
At this point Kalugin woke up and decided not to sleep any more, but he immediately fell asleep and had a dream that he was sitting behind a policeman and some bushes were walking past.

Una volta, per caso, a Torino, ho sentito Paolo Nori che leggeva alcuni di questi pezzi - Paolo Nori è lo scrittore e è quello che ha tradotto questo libro - e da allora, ogni tanto, prendo su e mi leggo alcuni di questi pezzi ripetendo dentro di me, o a voce alta se mi capita sotto qualcuno, l'accento parmigiano (male).
Ad esempio, leggete - anche se non siete capaci - con l'accento parmigiano, queste

Pastaruoju metu perskaičiau dvi knygas iš absurdo sferos: Gombrowicziaus Ferdydurkę ir Charmso Nutikimus. Gal dėl to, kad aš pats gyvenu absurde, šios knygos nenustebino ir skaitydamas šiek tiek nuobodžiavau. Tiesa, per Charmso absurdą vietomis labai ryškiai šviečia stalinistinės represijos, tai šita potekstė gerokai atmuša norą juoktis net tuose nutikimuose, kur Stalinas akivaizdžiai neiškyla. Šiaip iš šių dviejų autorių Charmsas pasirodė artimesnis, tad vertinu 4; Gobrowiczius buvo 3.
Ir dar, ar jums nieko neprimena šis epizodas iš Charmso apysakos Senė: “Pavasario saulė šviečia pro langą, ir aš markstausi nuo jos spindulių. Štai ji slepiasi už priešais stovinčio namo kamino, ir kamino šešėlis sliuogia stogu, perlekia gatvę ir gula man ant veido”. Prisimenate Camus Svetimo vietą, kur Mersault stovi su revolveriu rankose ir nušauna žmogų iš esmės dėl to, kad jam į veidą labai nepakenčiamai šviečia saulė? Charmso cituotos vietos kontekstas - veikėjas bando atsikratyti jo bute numirusios senės, ir taip pat skrupulų šiame užsiėmime neturi. Senė parašyta 1939, Svetimas išleistas 1942.

Come un uomo si dissolse
«Dicono che tutte le belle donne hanno il sedere grosso. Ah, io amo le donne tettone, mi piace l’odore che hanno». Detto ciò egli cominciò ad aumentare di statura e giunto al soffitto si dissolse in mille piccole sfere.
Arrivò il portiere Pantelej, raccolse le piccole sfere con la paletta che di solito gli serviva per raccogliere lo sterco di cavallo, e portò via queste piccole sfere nel cortile di dietro.
E il sole come prima continuava a risplendere, e come prima le signore formose continuavano a emanare un profumo esaltante.
Vecchie che cadono
Una vecchia, per la troppa curiosità, si sporse troppo dalla finestra, cadde e si sfracellò.
Dalla finestra si affacciò un'altra vecchia e si mise a guardare giù quella che si era sfracellata, ma, per la troppa curiosità, si sporse troppo anche lei dalla finestra, cadde e si sfracellò.
Poi dalla finestra cadde una terza vecchia, poi una quarta, poi una quinta.
Quando cadde la sesta vecchia mi stancai di stare a guardarle, e me ne andai al mercato Mal'cevskij, dove, dicevano, a un cieco avevano regalato uno scialle fatto ai ferri.
Anton Michajlovic sputò, disse ''eh'', di nuovo sputò, di nuovo disse ''eh'', di nuovo sputò, di nuovo disse ''eh'' e se ne andò. E pazienza. Racconterò piuttosto di Il'ja Pavlovic.
Il'ja Pavlovic nacque nel 1893 a Costantinopoli. Quando era ancora piccolo lo portarono a Pietroburgo, e là frequentò la scuola tedesca di via Kirocnaja. Poi lavorò in un negozio, poi fece ancora qualcosa, e all'inizio della rivoluzione emigrò all'estero. E pazienza. Racconterò piuttosto di Anna Ignat'evna.
Ma raccontare di Anna Ignat'evna non è poi così facile. In primo luogo, di lei non so quasi nulla, inoltre proprio adesso sono caduto dalla sedia e ho dimenticato cos'è che volevo raccontare. Racconterò piuttosto di me.
Sono di alta statura, non stupido, vesto con gusto e con eleganza, non bevo, non vado alle corse, ma ho un debole per le signore. E anche le signore non mi evitano. A loro addirittura piace passeggiare con me. Serafima Izmajlovna mi ha invitato più di una volta a casa sua, e anche Zinaida Jakovlevna diceva di essere sempre contenta di vedermi. Con Marina Petrovna invece mi è capitato un fatto molto divertente, che voglio proprio raccontare. Un fatto del tutto normale, eppure divertente, perché Marina Petrovna grazie a me è diventata completamente calva, come il palmo di una mano. È successo così: una volta sono andato a trovare Marina Petrovna e lei, zac!, è diventata calva. Ecco tutto.

Il'ja Pavlovic nacque nel 1893 a Costantinopoli. Quando era ancora piccolo lo portarono a Pietroburgo, e là frequentò la scuola tedesca di via Kirocnaja. Poi lavorò in un negozio, poi fece ancora qualcosa, e all'inizio della rivoluzione emigrò all'estero. E pazienza. Racconterò piuttosto di Anna Ignat'evna.
Ma raccontare di Anna Ignat'evna non è poi così facile. In primo luogo, di lei non so quasi nulla, inoltre proprio adesso sono caduto dalla sedia e ho dimenticato cos'è che volevo raccontare. Racconterò piuttosto di me.
Sono di alta statura, non stupido, vesto con gusto e con eleganza, non bevo, non vado alle corse, ma ho un debole per le signore. E anche le signore non mi evitano. A loro addirittura piace passeggiare con me. Serafima Izmajlovna mi ha invitato più di una volta a casa sua, e anche Zinaida Jakovlevna diceva di essere sempre contenta di vedermi. Con Marina Petrovna invece mi è capitato un fatto molto divertente, che voglio proprio raccontare. Un fatto del tutto normale, eppure divertente, perché Marina Petrovna grazie a me è diventata completamente calva, come il palmo di una mano. È successo così: una volta sono andato a trovare Marina Petrovna e lei, zac!, è diventata calva. Ecco tutto.

Jedna starica se usled svoje preterane radoznalosti nagnula kroz prozor, ispala i razmrskala se.
Kroz prozor se nagnula druga starica da bi videla onu koja se razmrskala, ali je usled svoje preterane radoznalosti takođe ispala kroz prozor, strmoglavila se i razmrskala.
Zatim je kroz prozor ispala treća starica, zatim četvrta, zatim peta.
Kada je ispala i šesta starica, meni je dosadilo da ih gledam, pa sam pošao na Maljcevsku pijacu gde su, kažu, jednom slepcu poklonili pleteni šal.
Evo, ja se zaljubila. Ljudska egzistencija svedena samo na taj jedan trenutak smrti. Čitava egzistencija je toliko besmislena da je 'dosadila' i da je zanimljiviji događaj čin dobrote. Posmatrano u kontekstu vremena u kojem je Harms stvarao (Staljinov teror) to daje strašnu sliku Rusije nakon revolucije.
Knjižica se sastoji od 30 slučajeva koji u sebi sadrže apsurdnost života. Slučajevi bez ikakve motivacije, informacija... bez ičega. Minijature jednog događaja koji je izgubio svaki smisao a jedino što je postojano je haos i smrt.

I love revisiting these genius, twisted little works every few years. Kharms is truly one of the most unique writers, maybe ever. A lot of his work consists of bizarre, sometimes surreal, sometimes disturbing, sometimes utterly pointless little "stories", usually no more than a few paragraphs long. Although there is a wide diversity in his crass weirdness, common themes include: falling, falling bricks, falling old women, old women, dead old women, a hatred for children, hilarious "plays" about other famous writers tripping over one another, forehead stamps, and more falling.
Truly unique and hilarious, typically, Kharms starved in prison during WW2, long a target of Stalin's art policies.

April 20, 2018Let us take a moment to appreciate the fact that Daniil Kharms lived in a different time, when his writing was refreshingly different, and in which his strange, gnomic little stories were to be appreciated, cared for, distributed as samizdat, and ultimately remembered as a perfect example of black humor at the height of the Stalinist purges. Because if he was alive today, he would almost certainly be camped out as some kind of weird Twitter alternative comic (@selfkharm), a routine shitposter of surreal memes, and generally waste his observational talents in the bullshit arms race of Internet relevance.

Ima jedna divna stvar, najveći kompliment koji se proznom delu može dati. Naime, Raša Livada je u Antologiji modernog pesništva koju je priredio prvo za časopis Gradac, a zatim i za Prosvetu Harmsa uvrstio među pesnike, ali ne sa nekim njegovim pesničkim delom već sa pričom o Riđem čoveku. Retko se desi da je proza poezija, al kad jeste onda toči za sve pare.

dve priče su mi bile solidne, jedna o nesanici i druga na temu mrtve babe. ostalo baš ništa nisam razumeo. kontam da su ljudi po pravilu u gulagu završavali iz nebuloznih i nepostojećih razloga, ali danil ih je sve zajebo.

Ancora meglio guardare dentro un catino con dell'acqua. Guardare l'acqua è sempre utile e istruttivo. Anche se non si vede niente, va bene lo stesso. Guardiamo nell'acqua, non si vede niente, e presto cominciamo a annoiarci. Ma ci conforta la circostanza che ciò che facciamo è ben fatto. Pieghiamo le dita e contiamo. Ma cosa contare, non lo sappiamo, c'è forse qualche conto da fare, nell'acqua?"

Stupidly, I googled Daniil Kharms just before settling in to write my review, and I stumbled upon George Saunders' NYT review of another Kharms book, in which Saunders somehow plagiarized all my ideas in advance, before recasting them in a much wittier form than I could ever hope to achieve. All of which I consider EXTREMELY DISCOURTEOUS.

The Absurdist movement in 1920's Leningrad reminds me of the doomed 'Visceral Realists' in The Savage Detectives, except that Kharms and his buddies were doomed in a somewhat more literal sense: to internal exile, imprisonment and, eventually, gruesome deaths. It's nice to see that they're finally getting their due. Kharms, at least, fully deserves the belated recognition. I'm also curious about his confrere, Aleksander Vvedensky, another legendary figure. The one poem of his that I've read was tantalizingly good.

Libro semplicemente geniale e non è una parola che uso spesso, ma qui se lo merita tutto: un insieme da racconti, narrazioni, saggi, considerazioni che ti trascina nel mondo dell'autore in un circolo di follia, non sense ma mai banalità, anzi, c'è sempre un semino che rimane impresso e cresce cresce dentro nel lettore facendolo innamorare e riflettere. Un autore che si inserisce nella grande tradizione russa del racconto assurdo, e lo porta all'estremo, confrontandosi più o meno direttamente continuamente con i suoi illustri predecessori.
Adattissimo per chi adora l'humour alla 'un bambino si sbuccia un ginocchio e lo mangia', a chi vuole farsi mettere togliere la terra sotto i piedi, mettere in discussione, destabilizzare, sorridere a mezza bocca e rimanere comunque sempre con il dubbio che sia di più.

Questo qui era matto, mi vien da dire. Oppure aveva un cervello che ragionava in una maniera tutta sua, che andava in una direzione incomprensibile ai comuni mortali.
Daniil Charms, in vita, era noto come scrittore per bambini, anche se i bambini li odiava. Lo scrive anche in un brano di questa raccolta.
È una delle sue tante contraddizioni, che non stridono di fronte a un insieme di brevi testi dove il surreale vince sopra ogni cosa, dove l'assurdo, il grottesco e la tragedia divengono indistinguibili. Il tipo di risata suscitata dall'umorismo di Charms è unica, e se vogliamo trovare degli epigoni bisogna andare parecchio avanti nel tempo, senza però ritrovarne interamente la poetica, indimenticabile e irripetibile.
Non stupisce che tutto ciò sia stato pubblicato anni dopo la sua morte; una morte anch'essa avvolta nel mistero. È infatti dovuto passare del tempo, affinché si sapesse la verità, cioè che Charms era stato rinchiuso in un manicomio dove poi aveva finito i suoi giorni. E neanche questo lascia stupiti: in fondo, "l'uomo che sapeva fare i miracoli" era un matto in mezzo a tanti normali, e come tutti i matti non c'era possibilità che venisse capito.
E ancora oggi ho il sospetto che si faccia una gran fatica, con quelli come lui.

Müthiş müthiş müthiş. Bayıldım Harms'a. Çok iyi kitaplar okudum fakat beni bu kadar eğlendiren bir kitap uzun zamandır okumamıştım. O kadar zeki bir adam ki kendine hayran bıraktırmak için 3-5 cümle kurması yetiyor. Çoğunlukla mikro hikâyeler bulunuyor zaten kitapta ve okuması yarım dakika bile sürmeyen o hikâyelerin sonunda bu kadar ufak bir metin nasıl bu kadar etkileyici yazılabilir diye soruyorsunuz kendinize. Mikro hikâyelerin yanında 35 sayfalık bir de Yaşlı Kadın hikayesi var ki zevkin doruklarına çıkarıyor sizi ve hemen Google'a girip bu adamın neyi var neyi yok okumam lazım dedirtiyor. Yarın ilk işim kalkıp Mephisto'ya gidip Harms'ın bunun haricinde mevcut olan tek kitabını da satın almak olacak.

Incidences is a selection of works by mr. Kharms; a collection of short stories, essays and plays written in Soviet Russia during the 1930s. It is my first glimpse of "critically acclaimed" literary absurdism; a form of humor that I've always enjoyed but never been able to categorize. I'm still not sure if i can.
I've read some essays by Kharms before (which ultimately lead to me buying this book), and i I find myself myself going \(O_o)/ all the freaking time. The thing is, though, i enjoy going \(O_o)/. I find it utterly hilarious and it boggles my mind how these stories came to be and how they survived the author (who died in a soviet prison in the early 40s; suspected an enemy of the state much because of what he wrote). I'm as glad as I'm surprised that the this-is-retarded-let's-save-it-people came across the writings before the this-is-retarded-let's-burn-it-people.
When reading Kharms, don't expect a plot or a punchline. The stories may or may not have an underlying meaning, and for me it's part of the point not to know. Give it a shot, read some Kharms and see if you like it or not. It's just about that simple.

The translation is not as fluid as other English versions of his work, but this collection includes of some of Kharms' erotica I haven't read anywhere else. The stories are amazing, but the translation falls a little short for Kharms' prose.

Olen rakastunut. Harmsin käsittämättömä, absurdit, maagiset, yksinkertaiset, kammottavat ja hillittömän hauskat tarinat ansaitsisivat miljoona pistettä. Lukisin näitä lisääkin, mutta niitä ei ole enempää. Harms, Pekka Pesosen mukaan epäpoliittinen henkilö pitkine punaisine hiuksineen kuoli 36-vuotiaana neuvostoliittolaisessa vankilassa vuonna 1942. Ei tarvitse kuitenkaan olla kummoinenkaan neukkudiktaattori löytääkseen näistä teksteistä ilkeää yhteiskunnallista pilkkaa kritiikkiä. Aina jostain tulee miliisi ja vie vankilaan tai maan pohjoisiin osiin. Eukkoja tippuu ikkunoista niin paljon, että sitä kyllästyy katselemaan. Puškin joutuu Harmsin hampaisiin toistuvasti. Jos olisin kuuluisa ja Harms elossa, pyytäisin Harmsia kirjoittamaan elämänkertani. "Gogolin jalkeen on jotenkin noloa kirjoittaa Puškinista. Ja Gogolista taas on mahdoton kirjoittaa. Sen vuoksi on parempi, etten kirjoita kenestäkään yhtään mitään."

An incredible book of ultra-short stories, dramatic fragments and weird non-fiction pieces... I grabbed this volume off the library shelf on impulse and I'm glad I did. It has turned out to be one of the most intriguing reads of the year so far...
This is pure Absurdism without any mitigating factors, individual prose fragments that make no sense on their own but when are regarded together with others of their kind seem to make a certain sense. Or rather, they echo and amplify each other (and sometimes distort or undermine each other too) to a point that is both *beyond* sense and yet somehow perfectly inevitable (and thus almost logical).
Writing in the 1920s and 1930s, Kharms seems to anticipate the use of postmodernist fragmentation while simultaneously looking back at the grand tradition of Russian writing. His work often feels like a deeply odd hybrid between Kafka and Barthelme. His recurring themes achieve an awful, hilarious resonance as the book progresses... Old women falling out of windows, bricks falling on the heads of pedestrians, random accidents, disintegrating men...
Another thing this volume does is demonstrate what a brilliantly funny letter writer Kharms was. And what a bizarre philosopher...
