To the Beat of My Heart

I had planned to write, enjoy delicious food, and land a book deal in Paris. But instead of that, I found myself being attacked in a frosty London alley.

Luckily, two incredibly attractive strangers came to my rescue. To my surprise, those two become six; and they are all very good-looking men. They are overly interested in me which makes me suspicious. I can’t help but think that something bad was bound to happen to balance this out lucky encounter. Something like – Peter, my ex, finding me. Still, I decide to enjoy the company of these men while it lasts. They even offer me a place to stay with them during Christmas. Who in their right mind would say no to that?

As it turns out, four of these guys are actually members of a popular band. Dark Fractured Hearts are taking over the world with their alternative pop rock and now my heart.

"To the Beat of My Heart" is a modern romance novel featuring a reverse harem storyline with rockstars. It explores themes of multiple romantic relationships and contains medium-level sensuality. This book is the first instalment in an exciting trilogy that will keep you hooked from start to finish.

To The Beat Of My Heart was fun, it lightly explored some darker themes, it was a slow burn, with some elements that made me happy to see.

Becca, our FMC, is an Aussie indie author. I love it when a book features an indie author, and especially when she's Aussie. Becca definitely had that Aussie humour and snark down pat; she was strong, independent, with a backstory of abuse that was woven into the story really well.

The MMCs in this book were all adorable in their own way, each different, with depth of their own, and I love the way this was portrayed. It was a slow burn, the spice was minimal, but the banter between the guys and Becca was so good!!

I did feel like this book was character-driven rather than plot-driven, which, as a first book in the trilogy, makes sense. I do wish the plot had not been so subtle, but the ending makes me curious to see what's happening. The story building and the character building were a little slow, but I have a feeling this is paving the way for the next two books.

I loved the why choose element in here, it was slow and organic, rather than rushed and straight to the spice, which was a nice change of pace.

I absolutely enjoyed the way the mental health aspects from both the FMC and the MMCs were written; there are some themes in here that were really well done. But no spoilers, so I won't go into detail here.

One thing I did notice that I thought was kind of odd was that Becca is always thinking about food, the book revolved around meal times A LOT, and the guys were constantly handing her sweet treats. I know that Becca is a plus-size FMC, but she comes across as intelligent, beautiful, independent, and strong, and to have her constantly being fed or thinking about food was a little off-putting.

I also felt the dialogue between the characters was a little touch and go, leaving the reader a bit confused at times as to why a conversation suddenly stopped with no explanation.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I loved some elements in here, it was well written, and I can't wait to see where book 2 goes.

Thank you to Layla Landon and The Berry Agency for my copy in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you The Berry Agency and Layla Landon for my copy, in return for my honest review. I really wanted to love this book, I loved the premise of a woman falling in love with a rock band… 1D fam fic anyone?

This book felt like a fever dream, Becca our FMC is the victim of an attempted mugging at the start of the book and luckily some world famous rock stars save her ass.

I did for the plot line definitely far fetched, and the elements of a Hallmark Xmas movie! I liked that the author used a curvy main character…. But I got frustrated with how often it was described that she was eating, or thinking about food… as if that was the only thing Becca was good at?

I found the boys likeable, Lucas is such a cutie, Jayden is incredibly cheeky, Elijah is sassy and Zeke has a heart of gold.

I like how we explored each relationship and touched on the complexities of each character. The burn was somewhat slow, and there was spice… threesome, polyamory, reverse harem

The cliffhanger did leave me intrigued! I want to know more about Becca and her life BB (before boyband)

To the Beat of My Heart completely stole mine. This was my first why-choose romance and I wasn’t sure what to expect but I ended up loving every single minute of it.

We follow Becca, an Aussie romance author in London, who lands herself in a bit of trouble. Enter Zeke, her knight in shining armour, and the first of four swoon-worthy men. (By the end, I was secretly hoping it would be six, because wow… Layla knows how to write a man or four.)

Each of Becca’s relationships felt distinct and full of chemistry. The group dynamic just works, and it’s impossible not to root for them all.

What surprised me most was the balance. I went in giggling and smiling like a fool, but there were also some deeper, darker themes handled with real care. Layla kept things emotionally grounded without losing the fun or flow.

The only downside? That cliffhanger! Thankfully, I have the ARC of book two ready to go and I’ll be diving in immediately.

This had me laughing out loud from the very first page, sometimes tears of amusment; the humor is solid, and the banter is gold, and the chemistry is fire!!
The mystery behind every chapter and each character keeps me going, wanting to know more, wanting to know why and who these people are.

I absolutely love and adore the representation of the beautiful, witty, and curvacious ladies and the appreciation of them and also the LBGTQ+ love between characters but also just to be shown through love, but love the why choose, reverse herem in it.

I appreciate the touch of darker parts of the plot and showing those, as it does display some of the sader parts of humans and the pregidious but also safety from stalkers or even abusers. (If these are things that can't be handled, proceed with caution and stay safe.) But the love of those who are willing to protect you and accept you.

Becca is a firecracker and a force to be wreckoned with when in the presence of all the main male protagonists, but the depth of each character; Becca, Mika, Zeke, Elijah, Lucas, Jayden and Larry. They just show so much development, small steps at a time, and I can't help but love every one of them.

This is a story that keeps on giving, keeps you drawn in, and for me, reading in silence because I didn't even release that there was no music on in the background.

Thank you, Layla, for giving me the chance to ARC read for you.

I’m going to be fully transparent & state that I didn’t 100% love this book but I didn’t 100% hate it. I feel that it lacked in multiple areas. It lacked in character depth, plot and romantic relationships. Now I understand this is the 1st installment to a trilogy where typically the world/plot is built and then we get into the other bits a little later on...

I read a lot of RH/Why Choose and for it to be engaging for me it needs not only a good plot/story/vibe but overall relationships with each character depending on the arrangement of the MFMM or MMMF or FMMM.. which ever way. It HAS got to have depth to the characters or you just end up reading a heap of smut (which is also OKAY, if that's your vibe). I felt like all they did was eat and it wasn't moving the story along nor was it keeping me engaged. In fact, it was a turn off. Not because the FMC was plus sized (PS LOVE WHEN THEY ARE) what I didn't like was it felt like they were feeding her to fatten her up not 'take care of her' which I know may sound weird but as a person who loves reading diverse character representation this fell flat for me.

I am however going to give the rest of the series a go because we end on a cliffhanger and I really want to know what happens next!

Thank you to the author for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

I received this book as an ARC copy.

The beginning of the book, the premise and characters seemed off to a good start. I didn’t vibe with the writing style as it seemed a bit erratic and all over the place. Constantly describing what the FMC is eating, wearing, how she constantly needs to pee (seriously like all the time). I DNF around chapter 10 because I was no longer following the story.

The opportunity to review an ARC was great but not for me.

Cute wild ride

Nothing like meeting the potential man of your dreams after he saves you from being attacked in an ally. It’s like a romance novel and the most fitting meet cute for a romance author. And not only is that guy sweet and attentive but also has a few friends who are equally as hot and bulldoze their way in to your life… I mean come on. A lot keeps happening in the chaos of Becca’s life. This was a pretty solid read and I’m excited for what comes next on her journey with the guys.

ARC Review - absolutely recommending!

I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Chapter one hooked me immediately and sucked me in until the last sentence. I have never flipped back and from from the last page so many times hoping more would magically appear!! The cliff hanger, I am impatiently waiting for book two.

There is spice, Abusive Ex, funny and sarcastic banter and romance- oh the spicy romance 🔥.

The main character is a curvy female, love that the main character felt more real and relatable instead of being described as a picture perfect model type. The love interest(s) are likable, adorable and steamy hot. Yes plural. These character all blended so well and I thought at first it would be hard to follow with so many characters, but it really was easy to follow the growth of each character.

Well written and in Australian English vs North American English. The author uses Australian & UK slang/terms.

I just couldn’t stop reading. This does have MFMMM and trigger warnings are included.

super fun read!

Arc review: my honest opinion.

Tropes: plus size FMC, why choose, found family, banter
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

I would like to start off by saying I am a vibe reader. I don’t care about technicalities or literary genius, I want a book I can fully loose myself in. And this book? It passed that test with flying colours.

I genuinely had so much fun reading this book. I was kicking my feet and giggling the whole way through, and I especially appreciated the little Aussie humour scattered throughout.

The boys were so respectful of our FMC, especially given how they met and her obvious past with an abusive ex.. except for maybe Larry at the start. Becca’s spunk and sarcastic humour was so much fun to read. It was also nice to see a confident and successful woman, who happened to be plus size, featured in a book for the beauty she is, while also still being vulnerable. It’s one of those books where you felt like you were watching their conversations and banter unfold in front of you and left you wanting to be their friends.

This book, in my opinion, was more of a character driven book. We got to watch relationships come together, the dynamics of the group settle and got some insight into each of the characters. There wasn’t a heap of depth (yet) and the plot didn’t really kick off till the cliffhanger, but as this is the first of three books I’m not that phased by it.

I also want to shout out to the author, Layla Landon, for shining a light on men’s feelings. From our guys healthily letting their emotions out by crying to one of them even having trouble with eating and their appearance, they’re just human feelings that we don’t see explored by men often (in the real world) and I think it was cool to see it happening in a book where they’re rockstars.

I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of this series!

Thank you to The Berry Agency and Layla Landon for an ARC of this book.

While I did enjoy parts of the story others I found repetitive. It was addictive though and I did read it fairly quickly. I mean who wouldn’t love a group of attractive men wanting to fulfil your every desire? The concept of a Reverse Harem is almost always entertaining as heck.

Becca is a curvy FMC but I felt there was way too much emphasis on how much they would need to eat. We could have easily skipped half of those meals and filled it in with other things instead. This is coming from myself who is a curvy girl, I was rolling my eyes at times with the same things being repeated over and over about how she loved food and would moan while eating and the constant stream of meals. I think it’s fine to mention but multiple times was a bit too much.

I did love the author side of her character, writing spicy books full of RH I mean come on how fun. There were so many things about the characters I did enjoy though especially her many, many men.

I’m not a RH expert but I did find it was lacking scenes on that side of things, and I would say it is a low spice level. I would have loved more POV chapters of the boys because they had such interesting back stories between them and would have developed the relationships a bit more.

The stalker element while it did provide some suspense it fell flat with the cliff hanger. I did have book two ready to go so I could continue straight away.

I do love how down bad these guys are for her and look forward to seeing how the harem progresses through the books.

Welcome to To the Beat of My Heart by Layla Landon —a why-choose romance where our curvy, independent FMC is rescued from an alleyway by two mysterious hotties… who just so happen to be part of a swoon-worthy rock band called Dark Fractured Hearts.

She’s invited to spend Christmas with the guys in America, who come with guitars, tattoos, and emotional damage. It’s giving Home Alone….. if Kevin was a grown woman being adored by protective rockstars and hunted by a stalker and a toxic ex.

Now, cue some music puns.

The premise? Loved it. My heart was drumming.
The start was a bit slow, and the dialogue sometimes jumped—cutting mid-scene instead of flowing smoothly—but to its credit, it did improve as the story went on.

What I did adore? The mystery. This genre usually dives headfirst into the steam, but here we got a little suspense sprinkled in, which kept things interesting. It added flavor beyond just bedroom antics (though don’t worry, there’s still plenty of those too).

And the bandmates? Total vibe. From broody to playful, the mix of personalities hit the right notes—and I found myself rooting for all of them (and maybe even wanting to be Becca for a few chapters). Easy seeing as we share the same name

If you’re after an easy, fun, slightly mysterious why-choose with protective rockstars, To the Beat of My Heart might just hit the right chord (that’s the last pun I promise).

I struggled with this book. Good basis to the story yet lacks depth and I couldn't connect with the characters.

LOVES:

The connection between Becca and the band evolves into something deeper — a chosen family forged through vulnerability and trust.

A curvy lead who embraces her body with grace and warmth, offering a gentle message of self-love.

The curvy lead is an inspiring author.

The spice level is a 0.5/5. For someone who enjoys spice, this is refreshing.

DISLIKE:

Felt the romantic connections lacked depth or emotional buildup, making the relationships feel rushed or underdeveloped.

Shifts between characters—especially within the band—can feel abrupt or uneven, making it harder to stay anchored in the story.

The dynamic struggles to feel authentic, making the reverse harem trope feel misplaced.

Not all romantic pairings felt equally compelling or believable, which diluted the impact of the group dynamic.

While Becca is well-defined, the band members could benefit from more distinct personalities and backstories to enrich the found family theme.

The suspense element involving Becca’s stalker sometimes feels underexplored or disconnected from the story.

Thanks to The Berry Agency and Layla Landon with giving me the chance to read this book.

I genuinely loved this book. I’m a sucker for a reverse harem book and these characters are so beautiful. Becca is a romance author and the four guys (Lucas, Zeke, Elijah, Jayden) are all in a band. They meet under unfortunate circumstances but quickly they all get along and the story develops. The setting of the story starts out in London then moves over to the US for Christmas! (I love Christmas) we get to see the relationships between the main characters develop and all the different back stories for each character are slowly laid out to help getting a better understanding of the way they all are. Becca unfortunately has her own issues she doesn’t bring to light until she asks for help with her lagging laptop and they find out she’s been stalked, presumably by her stupid idiot ex boyfriend (we hate him) and then we learn it’s been going on for a while. The cliffhanger to this book is like a wtf moment bc Becca is just chillin then it all goes down and then bam, end of book. Overall I really enjoyed the writing style of this book, I think it flowed well and was well paced and not rushed. I enjoyed how the characters are all quite different in their own quirky ways and I hope that Larry the lawyer ends up part of the harem too. Hehe.

⚜️ Book Title - To the Beat of my Heart
⚜️ Author - Layla Landon
⚜️ Rating - ⭐️⭐️
⚜️ Some Genre/Themes/Tropes: Adult Fiction, Romance and RH

I received an eBook via The Berry Agency. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This is my honest review.

I love Reverse Harem and Rockstar books, so I was instantly sold on the premise of this one, it sounded like a fun read.

The concept was great, but I wasn’t completely sold on the execution. I’m currently sick, so I’m not sure if the writing didn’t flow well or if my foggy brain made it harder to get into, but it felt a little stilted at times. I think the writing style just may not be for me, though others might enjoy it.

I also prefer a bit more plot alongside the developing relationships. The story felt a little slow-paced until the final part, where things finally picked up.

I wouldn’t recommend this book to others at this point in time.

I want to say thank you to the author and The Berry Agency for the copy.

Note (How I rate): One is DNF. Two is got there but struggled. Three stars is a good, enjoyable read. Four is an excellent read and five is a comfort read that lingers with me for life. My five stars can be imperfect but to me they hit right.

Sign me up for *this* world tour! 💙🎵

Welcome to the world where a swoony rock band save the day, and turns into a meet cute 😉. Story worthy for sure. Even better, our FMC has no clue who they are. Considering that was *just* the opening of the book, get ready for sooooo much more! I thoroughly enjoyed this gem of a read. Becca- our independent, determined, and resilient FMC is in for one doozy of a journey.

• Rockstar Romance
• Abusive Ex
• Stalker
• RH

These characters drew me in right from the start. They're filled with all kinds of colors, layers and complexities- which kept this reader interested every step of the way...and wanting more. Becca and the band's story is filled with mystery, past trauma, heat, family issues, intrigue, escapism, and a *major* cliffhanger that makes me excited for what's next. I also loved that the author managed to expertly weave humor within the pages even through the darker themes. I for one, am looking forward to seeing what happens next for these characters. Overall a really great read.

For me this book had such potential to be high smut but it was very tame. Now I'm all for books that are light spice that bring great stories, if I know going in! This book made me think it was high spice, rock bank all sharing one woman. However, it read more innocent and like they were a teen boy band over a almost 30 yr old rock group.
There were some really good parts and then there were parts that made me skim. Again had I known going in that it was going to be a plot driven book with a little romance I may have enjoyed it more.
I struggled a little with the narrative. It's all from Becca's POV except a few chapters where each MMC has a voice. I love the beginning and how they all met, I just struggled with the middle where I felt it was filler to make the book longer, especially if there wasn't going to be heavy spice.
The book does end on a cliffhanger and if you're vested in the story definitely would need the second book. For me I'm good with not knowing what happens next. I can be okay with where the story ended.

Noooo … you left me hanging … ps I am quietly screaming at you!

This book was everything .. a great book 1 for a trilogy… we got story building, we got characters building, we got slow burn story, with glimpses of what could come.

Love the way the men are together as a group and also individually.. love their reactions and interactions.

This novel was so easy to read, story, one has a good flow to it. I particularly liked how you didn’t just jump into the good stuff - how you let the story unfold … it’s too easy to jump and much harder to let the characters lead the story.

Yes, you left me on a cliffhanger … I kept looking for the next page but it didn’t exist.

Very much looking forward to Book 2.

WOW. I honestly had mix feelings about this book because I have never really been interested in reading a book with a why choose story line. But OMG this book has changed my mind I went from not being interested to reading it in one day. I cannot wait for the second book!! I was sent this book through theberryagency as an ARC reader and they did not disappoint. Layla's books are probably books I'll definitely be looking at reading. I was hooked from start to finish. These boys have a special place in my heart and F Peter if he ruins this or hurts becca I will most definitely not be happy the girl deserves some peace with her guys. If I haven't already said it I 100 percent recommend this book especially for anyone unsure on the why-choose genre. AHHHH book two come quick please!!!!

Thank you to The Berry Agency and Layla Landon.

I really enjoyed this book... I love me some Why Choose, and the fact that they are a band. Like dream come true am I right!!!

The Story followers MFC Becca and her new found love interests.
I think the thing I really liked about this was it wasn't jump -Straight jump into bed. They took time to get to know each other..

The ending did surprise me... It ending very abruptly and just felt unfinished.
But luckily for me I have the next book and can jump right in.

*Why Choose
*RH
*MFMMM
*Rockstar
*Abusive Ex
*Stalker
*Past Trauma

If you like all of these jump right in.

Thank you Berry Agency for this book! Honestly who doesn’t love a RH, rockstar romance with a curvy FMC?

I really liked Beccas character and found her to be a great FMC, I mean honestly she’s living out most girls dreams right?? A whole boy band? It’s giving 1D fan fic and I am absolutely SAT.

I loved Lucas the most he’s so cute. But Elijah, Zeke & Jayden were all loveable too. Loved the showing of men’s emotions and the worries about their appearances, it was refreshing

I loved the banter and the relationships forming.
It wasn’t overly spicy but enough spice. It wasn’t super plot heavy or like full of depth but I honestly don’t mind. The cliffhanger tho!!! Thank god I had book 2 ready to go!!!!

Ok I’ll be honest I was so scared to read this book I received this and the 2nd as an ARC and I had just finished and arc I really didn’t like and I was devod n scared this was going to be the same….

But it wasn’t… I loved this it got straight into the action and didn’t spend half the book building a world, the author did a fantastic job of doing that as they went along the characters had depth and were all unique and interesting. I loved that the fmc was plus size and the men worship her. My 1st why choose in a while and I really enjoyed it not something that I go out of my way to read but it was done well with tact and grace

Great story, but needs editing

I really enjoyed the humor and character development in this book. However, there were so many grammatical errors, it was obvious not much editing took place. "There" and "their" were used incorrectly, the dreaded "normalcy" was used instead of the correct "normality", weary was used instead of wary, which was the intended word; punctuation was missing ( commas play an important role in clear sentences)...I could go on and on. It distracts from the story.

2.5 ⭐️⭐️ - honest review; Arc Reader
I went into this book without knowing much about the plot, and unfortunately, it didn’t quite work for me. It began with a compelling start, but the pacing quickly slowed, and I found it difficult to stay engaged as the story progressed. The narrative felt somewhat scattered, and certain characters seemed underdeveloped or included without clear purpose. That said, the ending did pique my interest slightly—but not enough to motivate me to continue with the next installment.

Another reverse harem story, this time featuring an accomplished author and rockstars.

When I first started reading this, I was unsure whether I was going to like it. I was however, pleasantly surprised by it. There were moments that I laughed out loud and I enjoyed the banter.

Ending on a cliffhanger, I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next from Layla in this trilogy.

Honestly really loved this book but felt like the plot was hidden and bit no existent from the story but left with a clinger and making me want more and to read more.

It did feel like at the start of a one direction fan fiction book but as I continued reading it changed my thought complete. Definitely spicy and the relationship the MC had with the other characters is on point. I love this book.

If the plot wasn’t hidden away then would have made the book even better.

Thank you so much to Chloe from the Berry Agency for my eARC - I am thankful but my review and opinions are still my own 🫶🏼

This book is a RH romance featuring a plus sized FMC and then five? Men. While I’m sure this book will find its audience it was not for me, I didn’t connect with the writing style and in all honesty found some things quite repetitive.

I do hope this book finds its target audience but unfortunately it’s not for me!

This is a whychoose rock band / romance writer trilogy. It does have some dark parts to it, but most of it is these 6 guys trying to love this curvy romance writer who has had a rough past that has come back to haunt her. These are good, but I honestly can only give them 3/5⭐️, 🌶🌶🌶. To me, there is too much fluff, and it could be condensed down to maybe just the 2 books total. But still check them out. They are both out now!.
