Down the River

Rate this book
Abolitionist and former slave Phyllis Lewis finally tells her children about her life in bondage as the property and more of a powerful man on the Kentucky frontier. An orphan with fair skin and blue eyes she is never really accepted by the rest of her tiny community. But her isolation and sense of self serves her in the challenges ahead and she becomes a keen observer of life and events in a rough society built on men taking and holding power over others. But powerful men are not always competent men and their plans and schemes can impact others in unexpected ways. Phyllis and her family suffer and she must exercise what choices she can, not always to her benefit.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

We read about Phyllis Lewis again, featured in Mr. Wilma's book The Guardian in her continued fight against slavery. Well written.
