Volk is a supernatural Werewolf thriller. If you like fast-paced novels with a twist then you will love this book by author D. Werkmeister.
D. Werkmeister is a retired FBI agent. He spent 21 years as a street agent in Philadelphia PA, 8 of which were on the SWAT team. Prior to joining the FBI, he served as an officer in the United States Marine Corp.
His first novel, VOLK, won the 2023 Claymore award for Best Supernatural at the Killer Nashville International Writer's Conference.
Volk is a fast-paced, supernatural / police-procedural novel penned by former Marine and FBI Special Agent D. Werkmeister. I highly recommend this read; the surprise that is sprung on the reader at the very end of Part 1 is worth the ticket price in itself.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Extremely realistic portrayals of detective work, wiretapping methodology, and weapons handling contrast nicely with the supernatural elements that flow thought the novel.
D. Werkmeister obviously knows Philly and the surrounding areas like the back of his hand. I spent a couple years at UPenn and could follow the action in Rittenhouse Square in my left brain, as my right brain struggled to take in the growing depredations of a surprisingly urbane-yet-vicious creature that seemingly has no right to exist in the 21st century.
Sumerian oaths, runes, Russian oligarchs, Zeta cartel sicarios, unscrupulous Swiss financial planners, FBI agents and hard-boiled Philly detectives…this book has them all. Somehow, Werkmeister is able to keep this a page-turner, while flushing out all these characters and still leaving you wanting more.
I had preordered volk and having just finished book 5 in a loooong sci-fi series and being slightly burnt out on space opera decided to preview the first few pages, this was in the early morning. It hooked me right off, and I devoured it. I kept reading right through a work zoom call (I wasn't a main participant fortunately), then on through the afternoon and into the evening. I actually woke early the next day churning it over in my head and eager to finish. The attention to detail is apparent and Mr Werkmeisters experience in law enforcement delivers often fascinating details. All in all a worthwhile read.
Intriguing mixing of genres. The mystery/crime novel is right in my wheelhouse; the supernatural . . . not so much. I was a little wary, but Volk blends these two with great skill. The supernatural aspects are rooted in lore with a nod toward DNA. This makes the willing suspension of disbelief very easy. The mystery/crime aspects are top notch throughout, as is the use of the Philadelphia setting. (I want to try Philly pound cake.) In addition, the characters are well-developed, including our supernatural frenemy. So, plot, characters, setting, and something a little different as well. A very enjoyable read. Highly recommended
If you enjoy solving crimes alongside amazing characters, this book is for you. I recommend reading the author's bio before you read the book. I'm glad I did. The author uses his past experience in law enforcement as a canvas and his imagination to paint. I was hooked from the beginning. The details, the twists and turns of the story - all well done! I won't reveal too much as I don't want to ruin it - but there is a surprise the author reveals that takes the story in an amazing direction you wouldn't expect. I am highly anticipating the next book in the series.
Any time you come up with a new angle on a classic story-type like a werewolf, you know there is great potential. And the author delivers a page-turner. Volk is his first book and I anticipate good things from the sequel that is in the works. Nevertheless the book stands alone very nicely. Like a vampire, a werewolf can never be completely good , but the question remains, is she good enough for her law-enforcement friends? If the book isn’t as fantastic as I described, I think you’ll find it close enough. 😊
Crime procedural plus supernatural thriller? Yes! And it works beautifully. Volk has all the details of a crime novel written by someone who actually knows how the FBI investigates along with a supernatural twist to keep you entertained and keep you guessing. Give this book to your friends and family who like a strong female main character and who are up for a crime story with a werewolf woven through in the best way.
Volk by D. Werkmeister is an FBI thriller with a shapeshifter. I can honestly say that I wasn't sure what I would think about this novel, and told Darin that I might not be his audience - werewolves are just not my thing. However, his characters are so strong and engaging, and the storyline so realistic (despite the werewolves), that I couldn't put it down.
Terri Watson is the main FBI agent. She is working the case of her career when she sees the beast. But who can she tell? Imagine seeing a werewolf and trying to explain that to your boss. Instead, Terri takes matters into her own hands, and the result is ... let's just say a great twist to the normal FBI thriller story!
I enjoyed that we see things from Terri's point of view as well as the wolf's. And Darin made it easy by making all of the wolf's thoughts in first person, present tense. It was rather spooky to be in the head of a werewolf, but this change in POV and tense really added to the story.
If you love a good thriller/suspense, even if you don't normally go for shapeshifters, I think you'll love this book. I know I did!
