One year ago, on a rainy night, I made a horrible mistake.

A mistake that would haunt my every waking moment.

I accidentally killed Nate, the star quarterback.

Or so I thought.

Now he’s back from the dead.

Nothing will quench his thirst for revenge.

Not until my broken pieces lie scattered by his feet and he’s inhaled my last breath.

The only way out is in a body bag.

Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are is a Halloween-themed horror story intended for mature audiences. It's very dark and contains graphic sexual content and violence. Reader discretion is advised. Please see the book preview for complete CW.

I found a new author, and she's out of her mind. (respectfully)

Did you think I was dead, little killer? Did you think I would stay buried?

I had a feeling I would enjoy this book as soon as I read the author's warning:

This book has no sweet moments, good men, or redeemable characters. Don't read this book unless you want to turn the last page and think, "What the fuck was that?"

You were right, dear author. I turned the last page and thought, 'What the fuck was that?'

This is a horror erotica. Yes, I read erotica for the first time ever. But before you pass judgment, it has much more depth than I expected, and the eerie elements and unexpected twists were what kept me engaged, even though I would be dishonest if I claimed I wasn't oddly captivated by the bizarre and unsettling sex scenes. I wasn't lying when I said that Whisper of Death by Christopher Pike altered my brain chemistry. I am no longer the Persephone I used to be before I read that book.

SPOILERS

Skyler and Evelyn are high school students driving home on a rainy evening after a party. Skyler has had a bit too much to drink, while Evelyn is under the influence of illegal drugs (you can tell where this is going, right?). Out of nowhere, they collide with something and veer off the road. To their astonishment, they find that the object they hit is none other than Nate, the star quarterback and town hero. Shocked, Skyler wants to report the incident, but Evelyn urges her to reconsider. Nate is already dead; why should they let one mistake ruin their lives? They would definitely face severe consequences due to their intoxication. Evelyn suggests that she will call her rich daddy to have the car towed. They then move Nate's body, and later, Evelyn's dad arranges for the car to be towed, leading everyone to believe that Nate was a victim of a hit-and-run.

A year goes by. Skyler struggles with her actions. She makes an effort to spend time with Evelyn, who is a cheerleader, and Evelyn's circle of friends. I really like the friendship between Skyler and Evelyn and how close they are despite their differences. There's a cute football player named Dustin who has feelings for Skyler, but she can't date him. The memory of what happened to Nate continues to haunt her. Skyler had a significant crush on Nate when he was alive, which adds to her misery. To cope with the tragedy, she resorts to self-harm.

Halloween is just around the corner, along with the anniversary of Nate's death. Nate's friends gather at the graveyard near his grave, indulging in drinks and drugs. Skyler glances towards the woods and sees him. She sees Nate peering at her from the shadows, a smirk playing on his lips. Initially taken aback, she quickly reassures herself, remembering that she had taken some pills and smoked a joint. Pills and joints don't make you hallucinate your deceased crush, whom you accidentally killed, Skyler. Later, she catches a glimpse of him from her car, standing in the heavy rain, gazing at her with that same cruel smirk. He begins to invade her nightmares but also appears while she’s awake, toying with her and doing things to her.

Skyler and Evelyn arrive at school one morning and see *cue suspenseful music* Nate leaning against Skyler's locker. Everyone is happy to see him (except for Skyler and Evelyn), and he claims he's been at a specialist hospital overseas. Skyler and Evelyn carried his lifeless body off the road, and they are convinced he was dead, so what’s he doing here? Did he survive? Where has he been all this time? One thing is certain: he is going to make Skyler pay for what she did.

This isn't a love story, and it involves elements of dub/non-con, but Skyler enjoys it, so who am I to judge?

Ha, gotcha!

MAJOR SPOILERS

It turns out this is a classic example of an unreliable narrator. Everything that occurred after the accident wasn't real, and the accident itself unfolded in a different way. When Skyler hit Nate and crashed the car, Evelyn was dead on impact. Skyler, thinking Nate was dead, dragged him to the car, placed him behind the wheel, soaked the car in gasoline, and set it ablaze, burning Nate alive along with all the evidence.

A year later on Halloween, she killed her friends in a cabin they had rented for the weekend (where the latter part of the book unfolds). Before heading to the cabin, she shot her father and her boyfriend, Dustin. Skyler is in a psychiatric facility, battling psychosis, spinning tales in her mind, and unable to face the reality of her actions. The final chapter reveals that her doctor is actually a wolf in disguise; at night, he drugs her, restrains her, and assaults her. My take on it is that all those scenes where Nate is sexually dominating her were really the doctor, but in Skyler's mind, she convinced herself it was Nate. Harleigh Beck is the ultimate troll. She marketed this as a spooky erotica featuring a vengeful, dominating ghost bad boy quarterback, when in reality, it's a book about mental health. The human mind is more terrifying than any ghost or demon.

I don't even know why or how this book came under my radar 🤷‍♀️ but one look at the cover, a read of the blurb I kind of #oneclicked on Amazon and dived right in, now I have to decide what to rate this!!

This was so f🙊cked up!! Just when I thought this story was going one way it flipped me on its axles and went a whole new level of wtf was that kind of book. And honestly I don't even know what to rate this, many peeps enjoyed it, maybe it's me, maybe this genre (horror) just isn't my jam.

This is broken up into 3 parts, the 1st part I really enjoyed and liked how it was all unfolding, two best friends cover up a murder, then we're thrown into the 2nd part (halloween night) and I thought ok drugs are making her see things, do things out of character, then I reach part 3 and I'm like f🤷‍♀️ck me backwards this whole book just went through the twilight zone and flipped me out. And that ending wtf was that!!

Soooo I'm going to give this one 3 stars.

This is just my personal preference, but I really struggle with content revolving around high school kids. Just very overdone and uninteresting a strong majority of the time. Gossiping, rumors, who likes who, partying at someone’s house, recreational drugs, etc, it just all really bores me. So, I had some issues staying focused here for that reason and couldn’t connect with any of the characters. But, looking beyond that aspect, the story wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t anything necessarily new. And the content didn’t match the quality of the writing. For instance, “I’m a monster about to feast on your pussy.” Lines like that left me unsure of the proper reaction to have, i.e. laugh vs wince. There was a lot of sex in it, which felt very forced and out of place. Almost like the main story was written first, then someone stuck sex scenes into it randomly. If anything, they actually took away from the premise, instead of aiding it, leaving them feeling very unnecessary, in most cases. One other factor that made this a bit hard to read was the fact that each chapter was a different POV, but then some chapters had several different character’s POVS intermingled. And the shock ending was just ok. Kind of felt like an abrupt and odd conclusion to an uneven experience. Some readers may be much more intrigued by the content than I was, but there were many more misses than hits here.

I know I can always count on Harleigh Beck for a thought provoking, twisty-turny read to fracture my brain a bit. Every single book I’ve read of hers has left me bereft of…well, everything as soon as I turn those last pages. Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are is no exception. As I sit to write this review, all I can think of was the shocked blankness I felt after that epilogue.

Harleigh, I salute you.

You’re not getting a synopsis from me, read the blurb. There’s nothing I can say about the plot without ruining everything, so you’ll just have to trust me when I say this story unfolds in a beautifully horrifying way right down to the final words. You want wtf? You’ll get wtf.

Psychological horror is a genre that I will always gravitate towards, because the mind is a scary, yet enthralling place. Beck penned this tale after experiencing a nightmare and I felt that uncertainty and fear seeping through the pages. Why does our psyche love playing tricks on us? What if what we believe to be real is really just a figment of our own shattered minds?

Scary, isn’t it?

And, of course, this wouldn’t be a Back tale if it didn’t involve copious amounts of delicious, filthy smüt, excessive bloodletting and plenty of nail-biting action. You get all of the above in spades. Hearts racing, cores throbbing and hands forever painted red should be her new motto.

What an incredible book to finish off the year with. Whether you’re a seasoned Beck pioneer or you’re looking to get your first taste, you can’t go wrong with Come Out, Come Out Whevever You Are. She promised a mindf*ck, and she delivered. Loved this one to pieces.

Note: This is *not* a romance, so please keep that in mind. And check those warnings, this is a dark one.

what the actual fuck did i just read in the best way possible 🤯

my mind is FUCKED !!! holy shit i literally can’t wrap my head around wtf i just read. this was such a mindfuck and i can’t find the words to explain how i’m feeling right now. holy. fuck.

this is a dark erotic horror. it is not a romance or horror romance. DARK EROTIC HORROR PERIOD !! there is bullying, driving under the influence, drugs, alcohol, suicide, self harm, degradation, slight praise, cnc, somno, violence, gore, and duo pov with a little sprinkle of one character’s pov 🖤

skyler and her bestie were driving home drunk and high one night when they got into a car accident, hitting the school’s star quarterback nate. they didn’t know what to do so they fled the scene after hiding his body. throughout this whole book we follow skyler and see her struggling to come to terms with what she did that night. she became a shell of a person and tried to go on about her day to day life. when she feels like she’s being watched, shit goes down hill. but the story doesn’t go the way you think it is at all 👀 when i tell you this was such a mindfuck omg … i literally went in blind and it was the best decision ever !!

someone please tell me why i fell head over heels for nate 😭 like i was literally eating up everything he gave. the fact that i was blushing and giggling should be studied because this is totally not a romance at all omg.

I NEED MORE OF BOOKS LIKE THIS SO ACHINGLY BAD IT’S AN ADDICTION !!

First off...What the actual mind fork? If you're into psychological horror spicy books - then this book will leave you wondering in the darkness of your soul trying to figure out this quick read, twisted, action packed, and reeling story.

One night of drinking and bad mistakes leaves Skylar in a bad way. Harleigh did not disappoint. It's labeled as horror and while there's plenty of graphic horror, it's not the scary edge of your seat, it's more if the white knuckled, page turning, psychological horror.

There was only one aspect that I figured would happen, but the rest of the book has left me in a tailspin of emotions. I didn't expect that ending...Just WOW!!!

Definitely read the trigger and content warnings because there's plenty of disturbing scenes, including the spice. I can't wait to read further books. Definitely a must read if erotic horror is something you enjoy.

3.5 to a 4. Entertaining. I feel mentally ill now.

Would recommend you read it if you love Harleigh Beck but not recommend for romance readers if you are looking for a romance. It’s not.

I don’t feel cheated of a romance because the whole cabin sequence was so well done and that’s when you clue in to certain things.

I thought .

I’ve enjoyed every Harleigh Beck story I’ve read so far. There’s just something about them that I’m in the mood for!

This book was an absolute ride—unlike anything I’ve ever picked up before. It’s trippy, unsettling, and completely immersive. For the first 60–70% I thought I had a grip on the plot, piecing together what felt like clues… but by the end, reality had fractured, and I couldn’t tell what was real, what was imagined, or who I could even trust. The author does such an incredible job of pulling you into the FMC’s unstable world that you start to question your own sanity right along with her. It’s chaotic, twisted, and brilliantly executed. If you’re looking for a book that will mess with your mind in the best possible way, prepare yourself—you won’t forget this one.

“I never saw you before. You were a boring and bland wallflower, but now I know what an evil, vile little thing you are. I can’t wait to break you.”

⚠️ Not a romance - you have been warned! Check TW/CW ⚠️

Holy shit, what did I just read?! This was a true mindfuck! My heart was racing, and my head was spinning, and I loved every second of it! There were so many “OMG, what is happening?” moments.

The way Nate said, “Little killer….” Gave me full-body shivers. Why was it so damn hot? The threat of violence, the carnal cravings? I couldn’t get enough.

If you love erotica mixed in with your horror stories, run to grab this twisted tale!

Huh. That was messed up. Interesting, chaotic and some serious messed up stuff. I thought Nate was a demon or something back from the dead. The truth was a lot more screwed up. Bit rapey, murder, blood and all that stuff. Looks like Halloween came early. Given the ending, it didn't make sense that there was a Nate POV. One of those ones where you get to the end and go, oh.

This book made me question my sanity throughout the whole thing, it's crazy. Just when you think you got the handle on something, the rug is pulled out from under you with no mercy. As I type this review out, I'm standing here like 🧍🏾‍♀️ Because this story took me somewhere else entirely and I could not stop reading🙂‍↔️

As I get into more horror stories, this book grabbed my attention with the gore and horror aspects of this story which made it even more addicting to read! It pushed the boundaries of any other story that I’ve ever read and I truly loved EVERY SECOND of the craziness. Harleigh really knows how to create that environment of suspense and anxiety which is what I felt reading the entire time, & I literally cannot stop thinking about this story & the ending!!😩

I’m on a mission to read her entire back log because I simply need to read the rest of her stories now. This book has made its way to my top reads FOR SURE!

Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are did not work for me at all. There are so many little character inconsistencies, the story was not particularly engaging, and the tired use of mental health as a plot device just plain sucks. I do not think I need to waste a lot of words on this one. The best part about it was how glad I felt when it was over.

I would rate zero stars if possible. It reads like a wattpad book, except I've read wattpad stories with better writing and more thought-out plots. This will be the first negative book review I've ever left. Congrats, you turned me into a hater.
_______________________________________________

Let me preface this by saying I dnf'ed at page 16, so idk how much I'm actually spoiling. This is less of a review and more of a rant. In true wattpad fashion, I'll be listing quotes in chronological order and my complaints. This is mostly to comfort anyone else who made the terrible financial decision of buying this book. (Speaking of which, the author did that bullshit the story starts a year before the real story thing).

"Don’t read this book unless want to turn the last page and think, “What the fuck was that?”"
--
Girl, I felt this 10 pages in. Also, why would you write a book like that on purpose? Why???

"Evelyn rolled down the window and flicked her cigarette through the crack, reaching into the backseat for her clutch bag. The car swayed on the road, and I quickly righted it, releasing a startled laugh. I knew I shouldn’t drink and drive, but one beer had turned into more."
--
So all of the bad decisions are being made. Cool, cool, cool

"Evelyn was high. It made more sense for me to drive."
--
Idk, high on what cause I'm feeling like she might be better than you rn if it's just mj

(Her dad) "He was always on my case when he wasn’t busy drinking his troubles away."
--
Like father like daughter, and this is a lot of shit to drop on the first page

“Dustin likes you. He couldn’t keep his eyes off you at the party tonight.”
--
I don't like you. You can't keep your eyes on the road.

"Meanwhile, I was that awkward friend who never strayed from hoodies and boyfriend jeans. My brown hair lived in a high ponytail three-hundred-and-sixty-five days of the year, and my hazel eyes were free of makeup. On days when I felt adventurous, I’d wear sheer lip gloss, but that was the extent of it."
--
Pick-me core

"There was one person I had crushed on since I’d first noticed boys, and that was Nate, the school’s popular quarterback."
--
There was one person I had feared for since I'd first read this book, and that was Nate, the guy your drunk ass is probably about to hit with your car

"I’d never told her. It was too embarrassing, if not cliché."
--
And God forbid we act cliché or... like other girls 🤢🤢🤢

"“We hit something, a man,” she whispered,"
--
I feel like, even high, I would be slightly more alarmed

“If he’s dead, then all of this becomes real. I can’t…”
--
If he's dead, then it's pretty real for him already

"On the ground was none other than Nate, the quarterback and town hero."
--
This is so predictable I feel like I'm watching a kids' show.
Do you see the dead football player? Who could it be?

“You were driving under the influence, Skyler. And I have taken drugs tonight. Illegal drugs.”
--
Aren't those the only kind as a minor

“What about your fucking car?”
--
What about the dying human

“I don’t care, Skyler. We don’t have a choice.”
--
I feel like you have several choices and this is the worst one

"It took us hours to carry him down the deserted road"
--
And not once did you think
Hey, maybe there's a better answer than dumping the body without checking for a pulse

“Now it looks like a hit-and-run.”
--
You mean it is a hit and run
You hit him with a car and are now running away

“I refuse to lose my chance at a scholarship and ruin my future because of an accident.
--
It's just one silly mistake. You're just a little girl.

"Life moved on. Nate’s death had initially shaken the community, but as the sun continued to rise each morning, life soon settled back into its predictable routine in our small town of Haverton."
--
I wouldn't recover from that summary of my after death. I will require at least a year-long nationwide mourning period, or I simply will not die.

"Like me, he struggled to sleep. His dark, scraggly hair resembled a bird’s nest atop his head."
--
Damn, he kill someone too?

"Evelyn would come to pick me up for school any minute now."
--
Why are yall still driving

"I should have burned them like I did the rest of the clothing.
Evelyn had messaged me to meet her down by the abandoned train tracks by the river and to bring my clothes from the previous night. Once there, she poured gasoline over the pile, throwing a match and watching it catch alight."
--
I don't like how prepared for this she was

“Don’t you think drinking in a graveyard is a bit taboo?”
--
Don't you think murder is a bit taboo

“I think we’re teenagers who need to relax and do stupid shit before adulthood hits like a wrecking ball and sucks out all of the fun.”
--
One would think killing someone and disposing of their corpse would suck out all of the fun. Forever.

“Just one more week and life will be back to normal,” she said, reaching for my hand and squeezing reassuringly. “Alright?”
--
How, did you make a deal with the devil
🧎‍♀️‍➡️👹
'One year from now I shant feel guilt in exchange for this mortal soul'
like, wtf do you mean a year past so no more guilt

"Even so, he was too nice"
--
Lemme guess the pick-me needs a 'bad boy'

An honorable mention but not a valid complaint was the tw at the beginning:

"...confusion..."
--
I actually busted out laughing. How is confusion triggering? Imagine every math class at least 12 ppl go bonkers and start hyperventilating.

Anyway, this has helped lessen the immense rage I felt at choosing this over a cloth bound edition of Frankenstein. Devastating, I know. I used to think too many books too little time, but now I know how watered-down the term "book" has become and I feel less bad. So I guess my takeaway is not to feel bad about slumping. Cause yeah you miss out on good books, but you also miss out on this shit. Please don't write again. Calling yourself a published author is an insult to actual authors.

I wanted to DNF at the prologue but I gave it a valiant effort until I just physically couldn’t force it anymore

The fmc was an INSUFFERABLE pick-me and it read like a very poorly-executed and unedited Wattpad first-draft
I had so so many issues with pretty much everything about this book but I just don’t have the energy to go into detail plus it’s almost midnight and I’m exhausted, read it if you want but my god I wish I could purge that from my brain. I did see a review spoiling the terrible ending so I don’t feel bad DNFing this at all bc I’m not wasting my time trudging through this bs for THAT twist.
