THE FIRST SIGNS that I might like writing -- and that I might be slightly competitive -- appeared when my year two (or first grade) teacher, Mrs. Holland, asked my class to write and illustrate our day. Mine read like this: “The Red team beat the Blue team, 1 to nil. And I won.” The next 47 entries covered my exploits on the soccer pitch while growing up in Ipswich, England.
In South Carolina as a teenager, my dad told me that I could get paid to watch sports provided I could write about it. Sounded easy enough and by the time I was 16, I landed a job at my town’s daily newspaper and had a column on Major League Baseball players from our area. I also covered my first riot there at a sporting event -- and it’s safe to say I was smitten with journalism.
After graduating from one of the best journalism schools in the country, I took a job as a sports editor in South Georgia and learned firsthand about the passion of high school sports in rural America. I thought I knew before, but I didn’t. This was another world.
I also had the opportunity to cover major sporting events like the Olympic Games, the World Series, the Super Bowl, and the Final Four. It was a thrill!
But nothing was as thrilling to me as uncovering the truth in investigative assignments. I once broke a story about a prominent southern football team’s NCAA violation -- and found out the violating coach had committed suicide only a few months earlier. The story won a national writing award and stoked my desire to write about these issues. It made me realize that the sports world was just another fantastic backdrop for drama.
After writing non-fiction books with athletes, for athletes, and ghost writing for many others, I decided to enter the world of fiction writing. It had been something I wanted to do but never found the time. So, I made the time--and had a blast in the process.
I’m not out to become the next Faulkner or Hemingway -- I’m just out to tell a good story. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them!
Can Brady Hawk succeed in finding the person leaking CIA agents’ identities?
They say time flies when you are having fun, in this case it’s hard to believe it has been almost three years since I read The Shadow Hunter – book 1 of The Phoenix Chronicles Files. The Sleeper, book 10 of the Phoenix Chronicles Files, is an excellent addition to the series. Like its predecessors it is action-packed, populated with well-developed characters, and ripe with suspense, subterfuge, and a story arc that is as fresh as it was in that first book.
Based on the title of the book Brady hawk and the magnum folks are hunting a sleeper agent who is leaking undercover CIA agent’s identities. I thought I had identified the sleeper at least three times only to find out I was wrong. This is something I really enjoy about R.J. Patterson’s writing – I have yet to figure out any of the “villains” in his stories before he exposes them. Furthermore, just predicting where the story is going hasn’t been an easy task. So, whenever I start one of Mr. Patterson’s books I just settle in for an entertaining read and desperately try to turn off my analytical mind because it is most often wrong in its assumptions about his stories. I received an advance reader copy of The Sleeper from the author and chose to provide my honest review.
CIA operatives are being murdered. There's a mole somewhere in the government and they're giving out information on the operatives. Hawk's crew of surveillance experts and seasoned agents must navigate a dangerous labyrinth of lies and deception to uncover the truth, which sends them to every corner of the globe in search of the mole and his contact within The Alliance. Lots of action, twist, turns and breath holding tfo see what comes next. Really enjoyed this book and looking forward to the next one.
An action-packed international thriller with a realistic well written storyline and outstanding believable characters. Brady and Alex are back trying to save the US from a high-ranking sleeper. This top-notch action thriller has plenty of action, excitement, intrigue, and several twists. A page turning read that was very enjoyable and hard to put down. Highly recommended thriller by an outstanding author!
Another great thriller, one will not be disappointed in this book. It has a little bit of everything. drama, mystery, intrigue, . Hawk has a new young partner Dallas Ryder on this mission, because of lies and deception. A good page turner to the end of how the mission turns out, with Hawk and Alex doing a job that's not easy. Given arc for my voluntary review
Have read all of 3 series and never been disappointed. Plots are always full of twists, danger, and suspense. Believable cause characters get into binds and barely get out alive. If you like Bond and Reacher you will like these. But I encourage you to consider reading in order even though each is a stand alone. A clean read.
Kept me going! I had trouble putting book down! It’s that good! Story is supporterd! Well you know what I mean! Loved this looking forward to next book!
