When Suzy Lunt's widowed mother Josie marries Luke Palmer, it's mainly to keep a roof over their heads. But soon Josie realises she's made a mistake, and she and Suzy flee Liverpool and a man they now fear. But will they be safe from the past in Birkenhead?
Anne Baker trained as a nurse in England, but after her marriage lived in Libya and Nigeria before returning to Birkenhead, where she worked as a health visitor. She now lives with her husband in Merseyside.
Got hooked in this straight away in this 'in between World War' stories. The villain is there from the beginning and has me holding my breath. But then, a big distracting section around the Smallwood family.....I loved the characters, but it went round and round in unnecessary circles...... Hebe Smallwood and her pompous outdated ways got on my wick.......but it came back to the main theme of the story in delivering justice to the abuser and murderer.
The side story of adoption and selling babies of unmarried women could have gone further and had a good outcome.
But I still enjoyed this book and romped through it.
