It began on an innocent picnic. Investigative journalist Zara MacDonald did not imagine that what her godson had found by the River Kelvin would lead to a struggle against one of Glasgow’s most faceless and notorious gangsters. Neither Zara’s friends nor her enemies want her to become involved and their determination increases hers: even when she is mugged and shot at, the experiences fuel her to persevere. The action swings between the elements of fire and water as two interwoven stories unravel and no one turns out to be quite who they had seemed to be. Throughout, Zara keeps her sense of humour, whether she is with her sardonic CID friend Des, her homeless and loyal pal, Spike or her would-be lover, Barney. Her survival power and her credibility are severely tested and eventually she finds she has to extricate herself from the very bowels of the earth in order to be in time for the showdown. Like Zara, you the reader will be tense and excited one minute and amused the next as the story twists and turns towards its dramatic conclusion.
