Steve Henn is a poet and educator who is on my list of writerly influences. His latest collection, 4 Prayers, contains an intriguing image on the cover. In the upper left hand corner, there is the sun. Just off to the right of center is a full moon with clouds. The image is haunting yet hopeful.
As I open the book, I read that two of the poems are previously published. Steve's works have been published in lots of places, including the Rusty Truck blog and Black Coffee Review. (Sorry, I cannot find where to italicize book titles on this platform.) I've also had the privilege of hearing Steve's words directly from him, and they have made me both laugh and cry.
The poems in this collection are both contemplative and reflective. I enjoy the midwestern references to Bloomington (IN), Chicago, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, just to name a few. In the first poem, I felt like I was riding along in the car in the 1990s and visiting these spaces.
The poem entitled "Sanity Mantra" is unique as it is a participation poem. You can literally rip it out of the book and re-arrange it. (There are instructions on his Instagram account.) The last poems are intense and heartfelt: if you've ever experienced loss, you will identify with both of them.
I highly recommend this book. Steve also does live readings and book signings. His website is therealstevehenn.com
