"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."
For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."
Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."
More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.
Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.
(3.5) My 7yo brought this home from school to read. Nabbed it for a quick read. Cute. I especially liked the "Stink's Furry Facts" at the end of each chapter. They were fun and interesting facts about guinea pigs ..like more than 10,000yrs ago South American Indians ate them and in the Andes mountains of Bolivia and Peru they still do! Moreover, the story itself was a wholesome tale of a traveling adventure to find homes for 101 guinea pigs that were saved from being put down.
My first Stink book and looks like Ms McDonald has weaved kid friendly characters that kids can relate to and parents would find acceptable ..at least this mama does.
This book is so funny🤣. It’s about stink and his friends sophie, and webster. They wanted to make the great wall of China with cereal boxes. They heard squeaking noises from their great wall of China. The squeaking sounds were from three guinea pigs. They went to Mrs Birdwhistles house and saw she had 101 guinea pigs. The names of her guinea pigs were astro, jelly bean, pumpkin, piggy wiggy, captain george hopscotch, izzy, fuzzy, wuzzy, rapunzel, skunk, curly sue, wrinkles, ruby, john, paul, george, ringo, midnight, mimi, mr nibbles, blackberry, scamper, scarlett o’hairy, harry, butterscotch, shredded wheat, snowball, hash brown, violet, miss piggy. They went to find homes for the guinea pigs. I like this book. It’s so interesting. Well, i recommend this book! ⛄️
This book, along with Stink #3, were in a two-book audiobook set. The review is for the two books together.
My kids and I had fallen off the audiobook wagon since the end of the last school year when we were not driving to school any longer, and we just didn't start up again when school started. So, this is the first audiobook I've listened to with the kids in quite awhile. My daughter and I picked up this one and Henry Huggins at the library, and out of the two my daughter chose this one to listen to first.
Ugh. Well, this one was just not for me. The characters and dialogue just felt flat, and I was never really excited to see what would happen next.
My kids, however, enjoyed it much more than I did, so I suppose the book did its job. My daughter had laughing outbursts one right after the other. And my son said that his favorite bits were the interesting facts in between chapters (yeah, those were pretty fun).
When Stink and his friends encounter three rogue guinea pigs in the backyard, they go to their local pet store for advice. When they get there, they find a hundred more guinea pigs running rampant around the shop! Mrs. B., the pet store owner, rescued all the guinea pigs from a testing laboratory, and now she's overrun. How can she find homes for all her furry friends? Stink, Webster, and Sophie are there to help!
I really liked the book I want to read more of the series. the book was about how stink and his friends found three hamsters in a cereal box sens they were trying to make a minister wall of the great wall of china. they took it to this lady that they knew that had so many guineapigs, but it turned out that the guineapigs were not here. she realized that she had so many guineapigs so they tried to sell them all but they only got to sell 20 of them. so they went on a trip to this place and sold all their guineapigs stink and his friends all got to keep one and that is how it ended up.
Children's early chapter book, realistic fiction. Stink and his two best friends discover that the local pet store just rescued 101 guinea pigs and they are determined to find them homes. They help Ms. B convert a camper into a guinea pig mobile and take the show on the road. Stink falls in love with one guinea pig he names Astro, but his parents say no. This is a fun story about friendship, adopting pets, problem solving, and even has a road trip mixed in. Part of a series but they can be enjoyed in any order.
I'm an adult, but I love guinea pigs and kids books too. For a kids book, this is a five star book. As an adult I wouldn't rank it that high in comparison to others I've read, but subtract 30 years from my life and that's what I would have given it :) So cute, and I love how it gives true piggy facts at the end of each chapter.
I love guinea pigs so this is already a favorite. I like this book because it is hilarious. This is a good book about taking care of animals. The adventures they go in order to find homes for all of the pigs is sweet and funny. I would have this book in my class library. In fact, I would have the collection of Stink books in my library next to the Judy Moody section.
What a cute, cute read! Stink and his buddies travel around Virginia and hit different destinations. It has cute facts about guinea pigs and even has an adoption warning at the end. It not only tells a funny story but also teaches pet responsibility. What a great thing to to do! both fun but teaching and learnign also.
Stink, Webster, and Sophie help Mrs. Birdwistle find homes for 101 guinea pigs that she rescued from a shampoo, and perfume testing lab. This adventure takes them on a road trip to Virginia Beach with tourist stops along the way. The story is filled with facts all about guinea pigs.
This book takes you on a fury adventure with many silly events. I really enjoyed that they had a mission and they all came together to persevere. If you like cute animals, silliness, and rescuing stories you should definitely read this book.
This edition of the Stink series really shows his compassion. He’s a bratty little kid, but he really cares about the guinea pigs. The guinea pigs really are cute. And this book made me really feel that Stink is a better person than his sister.
When a whole bunch of guinea pigs are discovered and need to be rescued, Stink's parents tell him he cannot have one. I like the Stink series better than the Judy Moody series because Stink has a better attitude than Judy.
A very cute book. If I can put aside my sensitivities for proper piggy care. I am obsessed with all things guinea pugs. The illustrations were just so precious in this!
I like this series. It's a great, quick bedtime read with my 8 year old son. The situations are pretty ridiculous, but the writing is engaging for kids and even for me.
Bookaday #17. Cute, easy chapter book featuring Judy Moody’s little brother Stink and 101 rescue guinea pigs! Lots of fun - had 2 guinea pigs as classroom and library pets for many years.
