When Evelyn Sleeps

New York City, 1919. Evelyn Moore is a young legal secretary who slips eighty-four years into the future every time she falls asleep. After a terrifying mugging in an alleyway, Evelyn seeks advice from a budding therapist, Thomas Allen, who is fascinated by her dream life. The two soon discover Evelyn is not the only person who travels between two lives during sleep, and they must race against time to find answers, slowly falling for each other along the way.

In her other life, Evelyn is a college student in 2003, protesting the Iraq War with her classmate, Will Jenkins. Convinced her 1919 life is a dream, they fall in love, and when Evelyn's dreams intrude on her life, Will joins in the search for a solution.

When her two lives begin mirroring each other, Thomas and Will both fight to keep Evelyn with them, knowing they have little time to protect her. Which of her two lives is real, and can she save herself in either of them?

Find out what happens when dreams and reality come too close for comfort, and what it really means When Evelyn Sleeps.

Book 2 of the Evelyn Moore series will release later in 2024.

4.5 stars. I absolutely loved this book. The premise of the story and the way the time traveling was done was excellent. The characters were so loveable, I found myself so invested in what was going to happen to each of them. The writing style was well done, I really enjoyed it. A true page turner, I couldn’t stop reading. Highly highly recommend.

Rating: 4.25/5 Penguins (rounded down)
Quick Reasons: entertaining read, creatively crafted story; WHAT EVEN WAS THAT ENDING?!; I'm not sure I agree that the better Evelyn timeline "won" BUT THEN !?!?!?!; sort of a slow start and the ending felt just a little rushed; unique play on timelines and dreamscapes

HUGE thanks to Laura Spivak for the ARC copy of this title! My review of this book is voluntarily written and in no way altered or impacted by this gesture.

Eventually, Evelyn lifted her head and spoke. "I won't be able to get over you. When I'm in my other life for good, I'll always be thinking of you. Wishing for you."

I thought, when I first started this read, that this was bound to end up on my lower ratings scale. The story was interesting--intrigue and mystery surrounded our main female character with every twist and turn. Who is she? Why does she share a name with someone from so long in the past? What is the connection between them? Why do they keep dreaming of...well...each other? I thought the journey in these pages might be slower than I was hoping for, when I was just setting out. I thought the premise was unique, but I wasn't sure the story would hold my attention for long. I thought.....SO WRONG.

This was an interesting, entertaining, creative play on ideas like alternate timelines and what happens to our souls as we dream. Laura Spivak did her research and did a fantastic job of blending these two worlds seamlessly...while still maintaining the differences in the time periods. The characters were both realistic and captivating. I got swept up SO EASILY in the story after about the first 20 or so pages--and I COULD NOT put this book down. AND THE ENDING?!?!?!?! I need a moment or several to just throw a beaky Penguin tantrum, ask WUT?! about a billion times, and then demand book 2 right this second because YOU CANNOT DROP A BOMB LIKE THAT AND EXPECT ME TO BE OKAY!

"I startle easily. You're lucky I didn't impale you with my umbrella!"

"I would be very unlucky indeed to be attacked by the only umbrella being carried on the most beautiful day of the year," he quipped, straining his neck to see the clear blue sky through the diner window.

THIS is a debut to keep your eyes peeled for, y'all. Laura Spivak wove a masterpiece with her words and is sure to ensnare you just as thoroughly as she ensnared me. I had my doubts that I agreed with where this story led. I THOUGHT I was going to come here and rant and rave about the decisions that were made. Again... I THOUGHT WRONG, and I need to know what happens next IMMEDIATELY. If you enjoy stories that play with alternate timelines and fantastical dreamscapes, a romance that spans decades, and the meeting of past and present in one prettily wrapped package, this read is for you. Close your eyes and go to sleep, Penguins--you might be surprised by what you find in YOUR dreams.

This book is unlike any other that I’ve read and I’ve probably completed 350ish books in the past 15 months. This one has romance, time travel, dream worlds, activism, heartbreak, suspense, death, NYC in the early 1900’s and once I was drawn in I couldn’t escape and couldn’t stop thinking about it.

The entire novel was a huge breath of fresh air that I haven’t felt since reading The House in the Cerulean Sea, which some may remember being my overall favorite read for 2022.

Can you imagine living your life in 2003, being a college student and activist for things you feel strongly about and then once you go to sleep at night you awake in 1919 and have a whole life there as well? Like it’s a continuous dream and you’re unsure if you’re true life is in 2003 or 1919? Then when your worlds start to have similarities that had never occurred before and you’re like “am I going insane?”. I felt for Evelyn every step of the way and I absolutely adored Will… I liked Thomas a lot too, but Will reminds me a lot of my own husband so of course I’m team Will. I’ll post my notes from what I took as I was reading, but you’ll see once I got sucked in my notes ended because I couldn’t take a break to stop and make notes. Oops. The ending broke my heart and I was like “WTAF!” Also, it ends on a cliffhanger so I’m gonna need book two right away, please and thank you!

My favorite quote was: “my hope is that someday I’ll find someone in this city who isn’t terrified of a woman who has convictions, and ambitions beyond simply getting married. I want to do something important”.

Entertaining, audacious, striking.
These are only a handful of words to describe the magnificent work of fiction that is, When Evelyn Sleeps.

The plot is cohesive and the characters are engaging, which keeps you hooked on from the beginning.

When Evelyn Sleeps follows the life of a young woman, Evelyn. Who travels through time when she dreams. In both of her lives, she is a secretary in 1919 and a college student in 2003. As her two worlds start to merge together, Evelyn must find the answer to why this is happening.

Laura does an incredible job at keeping the two worlds coherent, making it easy to follow along and not get mixed up on the events that occur. There are clear beginning, middle and ends in each chapter which really helps push the story forward and helps Evelyn reach her goal.

If you are a fan of time travel, historical events, romance, and fantasy this book is for you.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

oh my god.. WHAT WAS THAT ENDING???

This book hd a bit of a slow start but once i got into it i couldn’t put it down. It did take me a while to finish but that was my own fault for having too many other books I wanted to read as well.

This book follows Evelyn Moore as she navigates life through 1919 and 2003 at the same time. Once she goes to sleep in one timeline, she wakes up in the other. At first she thinks the other timeline is a dream. But then she finds out it’s not. In both timelines she is in a very loving relationship with charming men who are absolutely adorable and have raised my bar through the roof.

The idea of this book was so creative. I’ve never read anything like this! I absolutely loved it.

I have to admit I’m not entirely satisfied with the reality she ends up in… But the ending gave me hope that the second book might change that!!

If you want a short easy read, that is also very gripping at the same time, this is exactly it!

Book Two for Group One of my Traveling Books groups. This one was just okay. The plot follows Evelyn, a “dreamer” who lives two, separate lives (one in 1919 and one in 2003) when she sleeps. The plot has such potential and is genuinely fascinating, but as I read, I felt like it was just a lot of repeated Deja Vu moments and I quickly started losing interest and disengaging. The cliffhanger at the ends does make me want to read book 2 just to know what comes out of that, but I’m not RUSHING to read it.
It was just okay.

I love this take on time travel! Laura Spivak's writing is so good. I loved the pacing of this book.
Evelyn time travels 84 years in her sleep from 1919 to 2003. At first she thinks she is just dreaming another life, then both timelines start to have similar events. I cried when they finally collided.
Laura Spivak then threw me off a twisty cliff!
Thank you again to Laura Spivak for letting me ARC read When Evelyn Sleeps in exchange for my honest review!

When Evelyn Sleeps by Laura Spivak. Thanks to the author for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love time traveling stories but they are often so complex and long. Spivak’s novel is neither! It’s a very easy read that I flew through in one afternoon. I had no problem understanding the mechanics behind the time travel and there were no added complexities. You truly got to just enjoy the story. I liked the two timelines; especially that one was the 20’s. It was sad but the ending was great!

“The dreams were a gift until they were a curse and they always ended up a curse.”

When Evelyn Sleeps comes out on 1/16.

For the lovers of Divine Rivals and the Seven Year Slip, this is a MUST READ indie publication. The way I just cried my heart out while my heart broke with these characters is the most feels I have had from a book in a long time. My only complaint is that the writing itself had some room for improvement which is why I deviated from my automatic-five-stars-if-it-makes-me-cry rule.

What is this book about?

Evelyn has two lives. Her life in 1913, and her dream life in 2003. Suddenly her lives are drawing parallels, and Evelyn finds herself in love with two wonderful men. Only problem? The human body cannot sustain two time continuums forever.

I arc read this story and i absolutely loved it. This book was out of my usual genre but I was hooked. Its such a unique storyline and not often talked about subject that I was very intrigued. At the beginning of the books I was a little confused as to what was dreams and what was reality, but the further into the books you got the more understanding you get about it. It the end of the books I was so upset that it was done 🤣 I am hoping a 2nd book exists out in the world some day and I am latiently waiting to read it and get more answers 😍

4.5 stars This was the perfect book to start my 2024 reading and it was everything I didn’t know I needed. The way it is written makes it feel like you’re reading from a dual POV but it’s just Evelyn in each of her “lives”. I loved Will so much, but felt like Thomas helped her so much more. The ending being on a cliffhanger is torture and I wish I could have the second book now! Read this you won’t regret it!

Wow!

I hated having to put this book down every time something drug me away from it. This book had me in its grips from super early on! It's been a couple days since I finished and I still can't stop thinking about it.

The characters had plenty of depth, the storyline keeps you engaged. I thought the connections between both timelines were both synced seamlessly as intended.

If there is a second book, I can't wait to read it.

4.7/5.0 rating overall.

I was lucky to have been chosen to ARC read "When Evelyn Sleeps" by Laura Spivak. With the book being half set in 2003 brought back a lot of nostalgia for me (examples: IM, flip phones, DVD players, and having to hail cabs as opposed to a ride share option).

Throughout the first half, Spivak takes the time to set up the parallels in the book enough for the narrator and FMC, Evelyn, to let us as the readers know what is going on and really feel connected to the characters and follow the two lives ourselves. Being told from both third and first person with the sharing of Evelyn's dream journal entries, added a more personal touch for the readers to get to know Evelyn more.

The second act picks up more when Evelyn is starting to solve the mystery of almost a lifetime of time traveling between two different lives. As her truth comes out and her relationships build, we see Evelyn start to really to whirlwind with just learning her fate. She wants everything to be alight for all parties involved and puts her loved ones first.

There was also a strong parallel with the two male leads as well, Will and Thomas. But also were uniquely their own character. One she had known previous to the book beginning and one we got to meet right along with her. These characters both started becoming a part of her life when she needed them the most, but also they needed her. I want to see both come out of their shell more if Spivak decides to continue their story arcs (I'm trying not to spoil anything with my wording here).

As I knew the book was Book One of a series, I had a feeling it would end on a cliffhanger, but I wasn't aware it would be a cliffhanger like that. I am so excited for the release of Book One and already need Book Two.

My life has been absolutely hectic. I kept trying to sit down and read this book but kept having to get up and do life. I finally had the chance to sit here and read today and I finished the entire book within a couple of hours.

This book is absolutely beautiful. Evelyn has the romance I wish I had and when I got to the end of the book I couldn't help but cry. I felt anger at the boyfriend(s) that hurt her but absolutely fell in love with Will and Thomas. The story line is a whole other feeling in itself. It has me asking so many questions and wanting to know more.

I got into this period where I only read certain kinds of books so I wasn't sure how I would feel about this one but this book gave me a whole new perspective. It taught me that you really have to enjoy the small moments and just enjoy life because you never know what may happen. I highly recommend.

Whether you wanna call it time travelling or dream walking, totally up to you. But y'all's, I legit cried 😭 Evelyn conscious lives in two timelines, 1919 and 2003, each creating their own memories till one day the similarities between both lives align, and discovers that one life is eventually going to fade away. Explore with Evelyn as she finds the loves of her lifes and they both try to find ways to keep her in their timeline 💔 I love me a slow build up, helps contribute to the screaming parts of the book, the fast paced ending and cliffhanger keeps you hooked to "impatiently" waiting on book 2. Who gets to live out their lives with Evelyn? Thomas or Will?

My undoing was the quote “ I’ll take you in real life or a dream any day for as long as I can get you. ” 😭💔🔥

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can honestly say that it didn’t end anything like I thought it would. What an interesting topic for a story- Evelyn has two lives running parallel. One in 1919 and one in 2003, and it has been that way her whole life. In both lives!when she goes to sleep she dreams of the other life. When her lives begin to mirror one another, Evelyn learns that the fate of one of her timelines is at risk of disappearing forever.

I thought it was very interesting that the author selected 2003 for her modern time period. Google was just getting off the ground as a search engine, so discovering information about her past life was infinitely more difficult than if the book were set in 2024. I admit I was a little bored in the first part of the book when Evelyn was navigating different relationships and I wondered where it was all headed. When we neared the end and the story really picked up, I found myself wishing that both timelines could survive so Evelyn could keep her great loves in both times. I was sad at the end with the way it ended up I thought I am excited to see what book 2 has in store!

Wow, this book has everything, time travel, romance, activism, heartbreak, suspense, and death, and I was hooked.

I've never read a book like this. Living two separate lives, and suddenly you find out that you'll die in one of them, I don't know if I would be able to handle it as well as Evelyn did in this book. She took it with grace and found herself falling in love with the man who was there for her through everything. Will has my heart though. Falling in love only to end up losing her is truly heartbreaking.

Great debut novel. Can't wait to see if there will be a second novel, I need to know what happens with Will.

This book is SO good. I love anything time travel, so I knew it would be right up my alley. We see themes of identity, trust, loyalty, love and heartbreak. I loved how we were on this journey with Will, Thomas and Evelyn, finding out things about her dreams and reality as they do. And at the end of it, this is a love story, too. It leaves on a cliffhanger and i cannot wait for the next one! To say this book had me in a chokehold is an understatement, I flew through it and it’s so exciting cause the author could do so much with this premise. If you like time travel, dream psychology and a love story, please go read this book!

The writing was difficult to understand and from time to time topics changed quickly. One minute the main character was saying she hadn't thought of some annoying thing that happened, only to then be thinking about said annoying thing that happened. Lots of repatriation of the same thoughts over and over and over. The drama and parallels in the two timelines were annoying to me. And I really thought I would only give this book a 1 star because of how it was going to end, but I am glad I read the epilog and the very last paragraph grabbed me. Wonder about book 2.

It had a really good mystery/fantasy plot throughout the book. I usually don't like love triangles but this on was better since she had no choice but to be with (sh** i forgot his name, how could I forget his name 🤦). the cliffhanger though!!! Laura how could you? Will was so cute though, I've always loved a nerdy guy 🥰

Time travel has always been one of my favorite tropes.

Evelyn is a strong, independent woman ALL of the time.

She falls in love in both timelines with two different men... Thomas and Will.

Team Will.

Ends on a cliffhanger... and now, I need book 2 like yesterday... to find out what happens next!

This book was AMAZING - it sucks you in quickly & makes you want to keep finding out what’s going to happen. There’s not many books I “can’t put down” and this was one. You will find yourself relating to Evelyn in certain events, whether past or current, and choosing the best qualities in each love interest. I’m so excited for book 2! Definitely a refreshing unique read.
