The ocean between them isn’t the only thing keeping them apart.
Thanks to the machinations of the evil pirate and marauder, Uriah Smith, and Azazel’s cold-hearted leader, Lord Janus Auberon, an ocean now separates Sela from her beloved Caleb. When the unthinkable occurs, she despairs of life itself, until an act of unexpected kindness allows her to escape her captors.
Sela finds an unexpected ally in Prince Magnus Theodorus, who arrives on the island with a strange that his real identity not be revealed. Finding hope and healing along with the other members of the Remenant, Sela finally comes face to face with the Carver of Souls, learning the truth about the order of the Righteous, the lot, and Azazel itself.
Meanwhile, having been betrayed by the one person he thought he could always trust, Caleb fights desperately to get back to the one place to which he never expected to return. Struggling to forgive his brother for sins past and present, Caleb confronts the ugliness of Tucker’s—and his own—soul. When he is at last reunited with Sela, he fights to reclaim a bond she fears is lost.
Just when all seems restored, Caleb is offered a surprising a chance to take back what once belonged to him. What will Caleb choose? And what will his choice mean for those around him—not only for the brother who betrayed him, but the woman he loves and the newfound faith that means more to him than life itself?
Jasmine’s writing dream began with the anthology of zoo animals she painstakingly wrote and illustrated at age five, to rather limited acclaim. Thankfully, her writing (but not her drawing) has improved since then. She is a clinically-trained psychologist but no, she cannot read your mind. When she isn’t killing defenseless house plants, Jasmine enjoys devouring books, dabbling in floristry, playing the piano, eating peanut butter out of the jar, and wishing it rained more often. Jasmine is married to David, and together they make their home a couple of hours’ north of Sydney, Australia, where they live to satisfy the every whim of their ginger overlord cat, Simba.
A beautiful, fantastical retelling of the gospel! I absolutely love when fantasy authors weave elements of faith into their stories because it helps me see biblical concepts in a different and more meaningful way. Fischer uses the vehicle of fantasy to tell the very real story of Jesus' ministry, death, and resurrection. (She does it similarly to The Chosen in that Jesus is shown interacting with and impacting our MCs along with our side characters--He is not the main character himself, but He is the hinge on which the plot turns.)
In the acknowledgements, Fischer says, "As many have commented, sometimes it takes a dose of pure fantasy to show us reality--to illuminate once again, as the famous song goes, the wonder of the cross. And so, as a writer of Christian fantasy, I embarked on a quest of literary jamais vu--not to make the strange familiar, as in the case of deja vu, but to make the familiar strange." Then later, she says, "It is my goal to capture some of the emotions and central ideas contained in the Gospel accounts so that you may see them--and even feel them--as if you are beholding them for the fist time." I get very excited about this type of writing! Keep it coming.
Four stars instead of five because I just felt like something was missing in the characterization, which is something I do not usually say about Fischer's books. I felt this especially in the characters of Tucker and Liri. I wanted more. Also, instead of feeling organic, sometimes the dialogue seemed forced in order to make the Christ-figure say what needed to be said to fulfill an allegorical element.
CW: There are some heavy themes in this book, including sexual assault, captivity, prostitution, and vengeance. The events are not described, but the shame, guilt, and grief post-trauma are.
I can't wait for you to read this swashbuckling, emotional rollercoaster finale to The Soul Mark Duology! This story is so close to my heart and I hope and pray it will deeply move yours!
I'm honored to be part of the street team for this amazing book! So was gifted an e-arc
*review in progress* I'm still trying to process this book. It was so good!!! Jasmine did such a wonderful job of portraying characters going through so many different struggles. Struggles of the heart and mind.
Pirates of the Caribbean meets Francine River’s Redeeming Love in Carver of Souls, the second installment of J. J. Fischer’s Soul Mark Duology.
THIS BOOK picks up right where the first one left off, continuing the story as if it hasn’t been nearly a year since The Soul Mark released. (At least it wasn’t longer, amen?) In this second half, Fischer delves even deeper into her rich and multi-layered cast, bringing readers closely along Selah’s rocky journey toward healing, Caleb’s struggles with faith and emotions, Tucker’s guilt and decisions, and the people of Azazel’s wonder, skepticism, and hope toward the mysterious Magnus who calls himself a prince. Brokenness and restoration, despair and hope, doubt and faith—all these elements and more weave throughout the characters’ stories in ways as relatable as they are powerful.
THIS BOOK asks the hard questions that rise in all our souls at some point, whether before or after salvation, or both: Where is God in the darkest moments of our lives? How does He truly see us, at our lowest depths of brokenness and at our highest attempts toward righteousness? What is purity? Is it attainable? How does it affect our relationships with others? Is God a God of justice or mercy—or can these traits exist together? And with each question Fischer offers an answer, drawing from and pointing back to Scripture truths that, couched in the creativity of their telling, offer deep refreshment for the soul.
THIS BOOK wrestles with hard matters of reality both external and internal: events or circumstances we can’t control that leave us deeply wounded, and the emotions we experience in response to those wounds or the wounds of others. At the same time, the story explores the many trials of faith that such situations bring to the surface: trials of faith in God, faith in restoration, faith in goodness, faith in others, or faith in the future. If you have walked through any valley of suffering in your life, you will not only connect with these trials—some of them on a deep level—but you will also be encouraged by the biblical truths that provide hope through and, ultimately, resolution of each trial.
THIS BOOK grabs your heart and forces it to listen to God’s love. After reading Carver of Souls with its themes and events of beautiful allegory, I better understand and more deeply appreciate the gospel: God’s love for me, Christ’s love for the church, and the way I love others. I have been challenged, I have been blessed, and I have been impacted by a new way of seeing old truths. (I cried, more than once.) Fischer set out to show readers the gospel, and she succeeded in a stellar exemplar of Christian fantasy.
THIS BOOK needs to be read, by Christians looking for a unique portrayal of the heart of the gospel and by non-Christians curious to learn more about the nature of God and His love for us. Because of some mature content, presented more by implication than by description, I recommend Carver of Souls primarily to its target audience of adults, and not to any reader who is uncomfortable with or might be easily triggered by topics of sexual abuse. Fischer does credit to her craft and her calling as a Christian writer, however, by never directly showing anything and by framing even suggestions—negative or positive—generally enough to avoid stumbling or hurting a reader. This book may rip your heart apart, but don’t worry, it will also put the pieces back together by the end. :)
THIS BOOK is another gift from J. J. Fischer's trademark style that packs deep impact in beautiful story. It is a good book, and I'm proud to have read it. I can't wait for my hard copy to arrive!
I was given an advance digital copy of this book to read in exchange for my honest review, but trust me, I would have bought and read it anyway.
Carver of Souls by J.J. Fischer is an engrossing allegory and a beautiful finish to The Soul Mark Duology. It picks up right where The Soul Mark leaves off, which made it so easy to get right back into the story of Sela and Caleb. In and of itself, this is a fantastic fictional story rich with character development, action, and romance. There is so much more to it than though. It is a near perfect allegory of the Gospel and what Jesus did for us. If you are not a lover of religious fiction, again, you will find it to be an amazing story. If you do love stories based on the Bible, you will easily pick up on all the references and allegory. It puts a well-known story in another setting, allowing it to come to life in a new way. I truly hesitate to say anything of the actual story because I do not want to give anything away. Be aware, there may be some trigger topics for some readers such as kidnapping and rape. Everything is handled with sensitivity and compassion. There are trials, pain, forgiveness, and redemption. There are unexpected twists and turns, and many deep truths shared creatively. I absolutely recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
Fischer’s conclusion to The Soul Mark duology blew me away. I’m a huge fan of allegories (I think I’m the only person I know who liked reading The Scarlet Letter when I was in high school), and Carver of Souls is a fantastic, beautiful allegory. Where The Soul Mark took us on a tense adventure to a treacherous island with corrupt overlords and pirate criminals, Carver of Souls ventures inside the heart of all these characters as they make their ways back to one another and try to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives from the ashes. If you think the reunions will be sweet, think again. If you love allegorical writing, deep and emotional characters, and tear-jerking reads, you’ll want to pick this duology up pronto. The Soul Mark is out now and included with Kindle Unlimited, and Carver of Souls releases 15 March 2024.
Carver of Souls brings a stunning and satisfying conclusion to the Soul Mark duology. Sequels often leave me disappointed, but I have zero complaints about how Fischer resolved each character’s arc.
Sela and Caleb’s journeys as individuals and as a couple are heart-stirring and powerful. Both carry lies they must overcome if they want to survive, let alone thrive. Both make believable choices—even when those decisions break the reader’s heart. The side cast is rich and well developed. Each character adds to the beauty of the story with his or her own hurts and healing. The villains are three-dimensional and the heroes are far from perfect.
While this is a great adventure fantasy—complete with land pirates, thrilling peril, and swoony romance—it’s the deeper spiritual themes that made book two, and the series as a whole, instant favorites. Fischer isn’t afraid to tackle redemption, self-condemnation, self-righteousness, and the power of sacrifice.
Be advised, this book handles topics that may not be appropriate for young readers. Though treated with care, characters go through serious trauma that may be triggering for some.
And he also said that no matter how great your writing is, if your reader didn't feel anything with your story, you really don't have a story.
The Soul Mark duology made me feel a lot of emotions. Relief, shock, anger, sadness, suspense, joy, etc. Most of the time, the second book is not as exciting as the first, but with the Carver of Souls, it will definitely be worth your time. This book is like the adult version of Narnia (without the magical creatures but with pirates). Ugh. How can I review this book without giving spoilers?! 😅 Atleast the author knew how much I loved the story. 💗 So far, this duology sits at the top of my favorite books this 2024.
There’s no other way to start than to say this book, the duology, but especially Carver of Souls, feeds the soul. The deep questions, as well as themes of redemption and shame, mercy and justice, and sacrifice laid down in The Soul Mark are continued, enriching it and bringing all the threads from the story to a beautiful conclusion.
The characters leap off the page, their struggles and triumphs realistic in a way that it was a shock to put down the book and find myself on the couch and not a tropical island. The beauty and utter rawness of this story will stick with me, and though I cried through the last three chapters and epilogue, I want to reread it and see what I missed.
Carver of Souls is a moving, compelling story of trials, heartbreak, love, and redemption. A high seas fantasy, this sequel to The Soul Mark will pull you in and won't let go. I fell in love with the characters and the world and did not want to put it down until the end - I had to know what happened! Carver of Souls is more than a pirate tale - it speaks to the deepest parts of human nature and need. Some stories echo eternity in their pages, and this is one of them.
After the cliffhanger of book 1, I wrestled over reading book 2. I absolutely loved the characters and the story but I was so distraught by the ending that I doubted I’d be able to enjoy book 2. Boy was I WRONG. I loved this book even more than book 1. Prince Magnus and the beautiful story of salvation played out with a backdrop of the lives of the characters I’ve known to love? Nothing could be better. I’m so happy I read it!!
An awe inspiring conclusion to Soul Mark! JJ Fischer takes you on a epic journey through perils beyond human imagination! It’s breathtaking, keeps you on the edge of your seat and doesn’t release you. Find out in this exciting, heart wrenching, ruthless and horrific pirate saga conclusion, what happens to Sela! It’s very well written, vivid and imaginative! You won’t want to miss this!
This story is simply beautiful! Yes there is pain, definitely hardship, but beauty is rendered from the ashes of all that is suffered and seemingly lost. This will be a story to return to- to stew on- to dream with. How fitting to read this just before Easter/ Passover time. Truly a remarkable,‘parable like’, picture of redeeming love.
This stunning conclusion to the Soul Mark Duology left me feeling satisfied, relieved, and a little worn around the edges. This book is not easy to read due to some of the content, but it is no less amazing for the lessons the characters learn (or don't).
Oh my goodness, J. J. Fischer, God bless you! This was such a God story. I thank you for writing down what God laid on your heart. To prospective readers, if you love adventure, romance, fantasy, or faith-based books, read this series!
My first read by this author and she did not disappoint. It was an amazing retelling of the story of the redemption of Jesus. It brought a fresh courage to my heart to share with others the freedom that I know.
Very satisfying ending! I loved the spiritual themes and the Tucker’s character arc. I highly recommend this duology for anyone who loves Christian fiction and pirates!
This book…wow, such an incredible, beautiful story of redemption. JJ Fischer knocks it out of the park with this series, and I cannot recommend it enough!
~~I received an early copy of this book from the author for launch purposes and was not required to leave a positive review.~~
Why did Sela have to be Rap*d? Wasn’t what Liri went through enough? I hate when things are like this in a story. Why did you write this? What was the purpose?

Carver of Souls by J.J. Fischer might be one of my favorite conclusions of all time.
"Only a man who has never known love mocks the one who possesses it."
In my reader heart, Sela and Caleb rank among my favorite fictional couples. Their love story is one I'll return to over and over, because it reminds me that I don't need to reach perfection to deserve love. By just existing, I am loved by the true Carver of Souls - Jesus Christ. There's something so liberating about knowing and believing in your worth. I will forever cherish the way Caleb and Sela refused to let the world's darkness extinguish their love for the Carver and each other.
Although I adore Caleb, I can't say I felt similar about his older brother Tucker. Actually, for most of both books, I HATED this character. He reaches a level of hypocrisy that still makes my blood boil. Every time he appeared on the page, my fingers death gripped the book. He constantly makes excuses for his numerous cowardly choices, and even goes the extra mile to blame everyone but his own foolish self. However, by the end, Jasmine won me over, and I found my fury diminish. Although I understand the purpose behind this character, I don't think I've despised an imagined person quite this strongly in a very long time. All that to say, if you want to punch Tucker in the face throughout your time reading this book, join the club - I considered making t-shirts.
Last, Carver of Souls has a happy ending (this isn't a spoiler, since Jasmine promises a happy ending in all her books). It's not a book that drags readers mercilessly through the darkness of the world failing to reach the light of hope at the end of the tunnel. Sela and Caleb - along with the other loveable side characters - find happiness. Their lives are far from perfect, but they recognize the blessings in their lives and they're content with putting their focus on those blessings. This ending not only makes these characters feel so real, but it also encouraged me to appreciate the blessings in my own life.
From one reader soul to another, thank you, J.J. Fischer for the gift of The Soul Mark duology. It wasn't just a fantastic book. This story touched my heart and inspired me to be courageous in both my faith and my dreams. It's something special, and it was a true blessing to read. I want so many more books in this world!
It was an honor to be part of the Carver of Soul's street team. I'm so thankful I got to read an e-arc of this incredible story.
