Zot!

Rate this book

ZOT! feels dated, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It reads a lot like a Saturday Morning cartoon--not too heavy on substance, characters that feel a little flat. As a bridge to today's indie comics, as well as a big factor in the popularity of manga to American audiences (plus, of course, following McCloud's incredible modern influence, this series in definitely interesting for anyone into graphic narratives. Other than that, 'eh. Jenny is so boring, flat and stereotypically self-loathing that I had trouble relating to most of the stories. I loved Zot a lot, in the same way I love Finn in Adventure time--he is so good at heart, even when he makes mistakes. He's surprisingly progressive when it comes to sexuality, which is something still sometimes hard to find in comics.

If you're super into comics, give it a go.

Most people (myself included) know McCloud from his various "How To/Understanding/etc." illustrated textbooks, but his work on Zot!--particularly the "Earth Stories" at the end--stands the test of time. I was expecting some cheesy Astro Boy-ish nonsense (as I'd gleaned during my skim of the color run about a decade ago), but McCloud's maturation as a storyteller who can squeeze raw human emotion out of a handful of panels is quite striking. Yet another indication that comics are best left to the vision of a single creator rather than an artist/writer team in the Gaiman/various and Moore/Gibbons molds. McCloud's "liner notes" between stories go a long way toward enhancing the product, too. I picked this up at Half Price Books for $4 (new/remaindered), and I'd wager you could, too.

While the story and artwork weren't top of the line, I quite loved this. I was a fan of Scott McCloud going into this, having read his Making Comics(and all the books of its ilk) and this book, to me, was watching him apply everything he taught me through those books.

If you're a comic fan, you should read this and everything else with the name Scott McCloud's name on it, but if not, this one probably won't pull you on board.

This was an awesome tomb for the Tomb Topple readathon and I found it fun although a little dated. The anniversary edition is DEFINITELY the one to pick up as a modern reader. Those introspective pieces from the creator were my favorite part. I’m not inspired to pick up more Zot issues but I am glad I read this collection.
