Shane MacKenzie’s life has been turned upside down. He’s lost his command, his identity, and his will to live. He’s a dead man walking, and the only thing that makes waking up in the morning worthwhile is knowing he’ll come head to head with the one woman who gets his blood moving.
Doctor Lacy Shaw spent years as a medic on the battlefield. She’s seen things that can never be erased from her memory, and when Declan MacKenzie gives her the opportunity to work for MacKenzie Security, she decides any job has to be better for the body and soul than watching soldiers die in a war zone. That’s until she meets Shane MacKenzie and realizes she’s never fought so hard for one person to live.
Liliana Hart spent five years teaching music in the public education system. She molded America’s youth, busted kids for smoking pot in the restrooms, and broke up illicit affairs behind the stage on a regular basis. (Liliana’s Addison Holmes Mystery Series, about a small town teacher who gets into a whole lot of trouble, is somewhat autobiographical, but she won’t confess to which parts).
Liliana began reading romance novels with all her new found free time, and when she ran out of things to read, she decided to write her own novels. The result was a 150,000 word thriller—a dazzling adventure—where the heroine was a thirty-year-old virgin assassin (Yes, you read that right). She couldn’t imagine why people weren’t knocking down her door to read it, but she persevered and began writing a second book. She finally got the hang of things, and eventually learned that losing one’s virginity wasn’t all that romantic after all. All of her books involve some kind of suspense (she just can't help herself), laughter, and a lot of steamy sex.
Since the failure of her first attempt, Liliana’s books have won awards such as: The Daphne Du Maurier, The Suzannah, The Linda Howard Award of Excellence, The Maggie, and many others. Her affiliations include Romance Writers of America and Mystery Writers of America.
Liliana loves to cook, and is addicted to reading, Internet Boggle, kickboxing, and Bones. She lives in a big, rambling house in Texas with a couple of cats to keep her company. She loves to get emails from readers.
This is one of the harder reviews I've had to write. The anticipation of waiting for a book that’s nearly two years in the making can be excruciating, not least because of the expectation that it can’t be anything but a blockbuster that a reader never forgets. Essentially, book disappointment isn’t an option. But what if it is?
‘Scorch’ is that type of book which I thought could be so much more.
A lot of the first few chapters is repetitive: an amalgamation of key scenes from previous books that are filled out, explained and set-up so we get Shane’s love ‘em and leave ‘em lifestyle - but do I really need to read about him having graphic sex with another woman? - as he juggles being a SEAL commander at the top of his game to the point where he sacrifices his leg to save someone. And perhaps this is where my opinion will be an unpopular one (what’s new?) - I thought it fairly unnecessary because I’d expected the story to be the focus on his new life and his PTSD, wrapped up in a new, romantic suspense case.
To some extent, it is. But that’s still too little for me. I felt that rehashing the previous scenes brought a pitfall of its own: several inconsistencies messing up the timeline in my head and piling on more confusion instead. And these discrepancies are clear; I had to re-read some portions of the MacKenzie books just to get back in the game for this. An instance (out of several) is a scene in previous books which hinted at a potential separation as Lacey was called back to active duty and Declan asking if Shane could live without her, but we’re told in 'Scorch' that it’s a different situation altogether with no whiff of separation - which made me wonder if Liliana Hart had several different ideas about Shane and Lacy when she conceived the plot and changed it as she wrote this book.
The result is an unevenly paced book, with a second half that rushes into sex, love declarations, and a climax (pun sort of intended) that felt like a cross between robocop, syfy prosthetics and special ops remade with a super doctor/soldier female lead, up until an end that seemed very unfinished.
The inconsistencies aside and other missing scenes which I felt were crucial to developing the story, I actually found myself finishing the book alarmingly quickly, and felt flatly short-changed because I wanted much more. I wanted the to be gutted by pain of Shane's rehab, the angst of his entire world upending, the pain of his mental adjustment of looking at his doctor with new eyes rather than she was attractive because of her amethyst eyes; I wanted the deep POV of his elation as he got back on his feet rather than be told that he simply had an 'attitude readjustment' when he put on his new prosthetic leg.
All these felt glossed over as Hart simply wrote about several key milestones in his difficult recovery. I wanted more conflict between Lacy’s and Shane's own ideals but seemed to only see philosophising platitudes instead of the rawness I craved. I wanted a couple so solid it would take more than a severe storm to shake them, but how could that happen, when the roots of their bond didn’t seem to go that deep?
I could go on, but I think the point's made. In short, so much is told, not shown. And I yearned for more of the latter.
That said, it isn’t to say that the story is a turn-off for me; I did like the idea that not every character is safe from harm and that there is a clear, ongoing case of war declared on the MacKenzies by various jealous parties after their toys and skills. I just wished I could say I’d gotten a hangover so great that I had to stay off books for a few days, which, unfortunately isn’t the case at all.
It is painful to admit, but this book disappointed me. I have devoured the other MacKenzie novels and was so excited for Shane's book to finally be released. I expected more from this story. I expected an explosion of Shane's anger and grief that rocked me, more angst within the relationship between him Lacy. While I hoped and even expected a book that would grip me emotionally, this felt rushed. To me, it seemed like the author had tired of writing the MacKenzie clan and this book doesn't have the heart in it that the previous books do. The previous MacKenzie books, especially the first four or five, are much, much better.
I have been reading the Mackenzie's since book one. (Dane) and have always pre ordered when they become available.
Shane's story is something I dreamt of and even counted down on reading.
The story opens up with background as to the events which led to Shane losing his leg etc and the type of individual he was ...personally all this could have been done in two chapters. I didn't get any sense of anything regarding Shane since the story kept changing characters who were telling it.
Shane's story came across as rushed and I am very disappointed. For grief sake this is Shane freaking McKenzie..the player, the hot head. Other than the banter with Lacy, which we were already exposed to in Declan's book , it just came across as recycled ,regurgitated content.
The story had the potential to be great but was lacking. It broke my heart regarding Mary..I shed a tear and put my kindle down for a moment not believing what I read.
Three quartz of the book was what we read already. What happened to the scene where Lacy brought Shane to the family bar b Que and Declan asking whether he can live without her?
Like I said this installation was way to rushed for the 4.99 I paid. I would also like to express my concern that Elena book is next..this has 140 pages and is being priced at 4.99. Whilst Shane's book is 286 pages and cost 4.99..why is this?
The grammatical errors were also missing me off.
Also authors are now involving other writers to writer books based on characters of the initial authors. I don't support this. Everyone has a unique writing style and I would prefer the original author writing about their characters and doing the crossovers.
With that said , I am disappointed with this book and the manner in which it was rushed. Never thought the day would come and I would give a book in the series something below a five star.
I have to admit, as much as I was looking forward to finally reading Shane’s book, I am pretty disappointed. The first half of the book was a detailed re-telling of all the events that led to where he is now. We saw brief scenes with Shane and how he was coping with his injuries in the previous few books, and while I’m glad we got some insight into exactly how it all came about, I really wish more time would have been spent developing his and Lacey’s relationship. I felt shortchanged by the second half of the book. As much hype and build-up there has been surrounding Shane’s book, Ms. Hart could have easily added another 50 pages or so to give us more of Shane and Lacey and their HEA, but it almost seemed more about “McKenzie Security” than it did about Shane. The romance felt very rushed, almost like it was told as an afterthought. As much as he was mentioned in the previous few books, his own book barely even revolved around him. I can tell this series is coming to a close, and honestly, it probably should have ended a few books ago. I started losing interest when the focus shifted to the supporting characters, and no longer on the MacKenzies. I was such a huge fan of this series when it first began, as I love family sagas. However, more and more I am seeing authors prolonging these series by writing stories for the supporting characters instead of keeping the focus on the families we fell in love with, as is the case with this series. I expected a lot more from Shane’s book, as he is the last MacKenzie to have his story told, and for me, it definitely fell short. And the death at the end – totally unnecessary and took away much more than it added.
2.5 : Well, shiz. Like most fans, I have loved and subsequently inhaled every book in the MacKenzie Family & MacKenzie Security series. Each with the right blend of story, suspense, action and steamy romance built around a family you *want* to be a part of, they’ve each been my idea of a bookish good time. Which is why after all the anticipation and heartbreak leading to me to finally open Scorch (Shane’s book, the final MacKenzie to fall) only to find the it’s the retelling of scenes already read in previous books and (for me) underwhelming, patchy new content that didn’t have the usual “MacKenzie” gritty feels I’ve come to love, I’m just left feeling, well, disappointed. AF. And as for the “Oh F*%k” moment near the end of this book...I can’t even with that.
Could not wait to read Shane's story even though I was surprised that one of the MacKenzie characters was given a terrible fate for saving someone's life. I have read and re-read all of the MacKenzie books for a few years now. I have never written a one-star review, but the anticipation of getting this book turned into a huge let down. I was very disappointed in this book. The first few chapters were a recap of what occurred in past books. Then the story just didn't gel. Lacey was such a strong character yet all of a sudden she doesn't come across as anything special. And Shane's about face after getting his prosthetic was very abrupt and didn't fit with his background attitude at all.
SPOILER ALERT
I've read that this is going to be the last MacKenzie book. What happened to MacKenzie family interaction? What happened to Shane's recovery battle? What happened to Shane's SEAL team? What are Declan's plans for Lacey and Shane back in the field?? Even Lacey and Shane's relationship was a bit too abrupt. Too many unanswered details.
The ending of this book was terrible. I can't imagine why it was necessary to kill off Mary MacKenzie. I actually stopped reading and didn't go back to finish the book for some time. When I did try to finish the book it was if I didn't remember any of what went on with Lacey and Shane. And worst part, after all of Mary's character participation, only two sentences about her sons crying and one sentence about her husband??? Wow. Major let down. The epilogue also left much to be desired.
I really hope this is NOT the last MacKenzie book.
I enjoyed this book. This is the first MacKenzie Family book I have read but I found it easy to follow and would read more of the stories to get to know the characters better. The ending is a little sad.
This is really hard as I totally love this series. I started from book one again just last month to have everything fresh in my mind. I have been waiting for this book for such a long time too. This book just fell flat - really flat. Honestly I felt like it didn't make real sense. The first half of the book wasn't even really about Shane and Lacey. This highly anticipated book did not do this series any justice. I really like this author so I am not quite sure what happened. I can't even tell if there is going to be another book as a next character wasn't introduced - but the ending really? Just wrong - and if there is an ending like that there should be another book as well. I hardly ever write reviews but the disappointment that I feel after I just finished Scorch is making me write. I am happy to read Shane and Lacey's story, but the first half was so jumbled it ruined it for me.
I was really looking forward to Shane. I loved the couple dynamics. Shane is alpha but I could say the same about his doc. I wished it wasn't such a quick read so I could get more of them. If you like scarred heroes, I definitely recommend this.
When I first picked up the Mackenzie series it was because I was looking for something from a new to me author. As I started reading them, they were entertaining but really lacked depth. Then the Mackenzie Security series started and each one got better then the next, and I was burning through them.
I had been waiting for Shane’s book, and then it intensified when he got injured, so I was so excited when I finally got to his book. I was a little confused when I started reading and we were years back in the story, alright, a little backstory, no problem. Then we went over everything that we already knew about and scenes we already read about Shane, including the whole fight between Declan and Huxley where Shane was injured. Usually word for word, and when it wasn’t it was because details of the story had been changed, that in itself was annoying. But then I was over a hundred pages in and we hadn’t made any progress in the story yet, with the exception for a few extra details, and a few added scenes, we still hadn’t made it to where Shane left off at the end of Cal’s book. When we finally started getting to new material, the story was good, but it truly felt that that was where the book began. So by the time the story was wrapping up it felt like I shouldn’t even be at the half way mark let alone 85% in.
Then there was that ending, which should of never been the ending in the first place. The events that happened in the last pages of the book were completely unnecessary and took away from not only the individual story, but the entire series. Especially being that this was the last Mackenzie book. While yes there is still one more book in the series, if you look at Ms. Hart’s website, she has the next book listed under can be read in any order. So I highly doubt we are going to see the fallout of the ending of this book.
Overall Shane’s book was a disappointment, from beginning to end. What should of been an incredible story lacked that intriguing spark that the rest of the series had, and what was there got drowned out by the lackluster beginning, and heartbreaking ending. There was so much potential, and I hope one day it will be corrected, but I doubt it because as I understand it, the series is finished.
This was the book I was waiting for when I first read this series a while back, I pre ordered it and have had it sitting on my kindle since it released I never expected it would take me this long to get round to reading it, but boy! was it worth the wait. Shane was so strong and knew exactly what he wanted from his life, he loved being a Seal and in command of his team. Then life chucked a curve ball at him and he has struggled, hating that he lost his leg. Hating he lost his career and not seeing any way forward, as I can imagine any one in this situation feeling. Dr Lacy Shaw not only understands and can help but maybe even has a way for him to get some bits of his life back, but she also has a deep attraction to him and hopes they can have lots more. Intense reading throughout plus more going on behind the scenes with Lacy and her work unknown to any of them. There is some sadness with a turn of events at some point in this story and I can only hope that there will be more books to show how this effects all those concerned. I loved Shane from the first book in the series and if anything I now think even more of this character and the strength he has to cope and start going forward again with his life, yes I know this is only fiction but I get really attached to the characters in the books I read, some resonate more with me than others. Some really stay with me long after I have read the book and lots of others after, Shane is definitely one of them and I want more please.
Liliana Hart has gone & done it again. I listened to SCORCH on audio as i haven't been able to get round to read it until I decided to add audio on to my kindle & I can say, how I've missed reading the Mackenzie's Especially as I've got The Last Few In My Library. But Narrator Noah Michael Levine Didn't Spoil It For Me But Heck What emotions We went Through , Well They Went Through. Seal Shane The Youngest Mackenzie & Doctor Lacy Shaw. But They got there in the End & What a Way it Was With Them Both Omitting To The Feelings They Had For Each Other When They First Officially Had Been Introduced 8yrs Earlier when Lacy Just Came Out Of The Medical Core & Declan Signed Her Up To Join their Team & Become The Mackenzie Team Official Doctor & she WAS The Surgeon who Had decided to Save Shane's Life & Do his Amputation. Though There Was The Tension Of being aware Of Your Surroundings, Then The studious attitude Of The Seal But Then Can you Blame Him For Feeling like His Life Is Over & But With Living. Then He Was Lucky To have The Stubbornness of This Brilliant Doctor Who's there pushing him. But then heck Liliana made me sob with her ending & that's all I'm saying for that part as don't want to give you a spoiler 😢😢😢
Shane's story was nothing that I expected. This man, this SEAL identified with himself by being able to lead and serve his country. When that was no longer an option he almost lost his will to live. Lacey a beautiful braniac would show him that he had purpose. She pushes him through his recovery. Through that they realize they need each other. When they realize that she is a target they quickly come together as a team. The ending broke my heart, but this story spoke to me.
Longtime Mackenzie family fan here with mixed feelings. Lacey and Shane, the genius doctor/tough former Army medic and recovering diehard Navy SEAL, are two of the most interesting characters to come out of Surrender in a long time, but their short time together lacked spark. Also, there is a plot development that is just heartbreaking; I can only hope Shane and Lacey will appear again soon to bring some closure.
I loved this book and reading about Shane's struggle. Even better was the equally strong match he found in Dr. Lacey Shaw. Their banter was sinfully sexy and fun to read. My only disappoint was the completely shocking ending that I never ever expected (I guess that's what makes her such a great writer). I will say I was sobbing with that ending.
MacKenzie Security book 7. Shane and Lacey story is an intense journey. Such a Fanfreakingtastic read. It had a bit of everything. Action, drama, awesome dialogue and of so tingle worthy sex. And in the end of it all I was bawling my eyes out. No spoilers from me but let me say this book was worthy of every star.
I skipped the books between Declan and Shane. So when I read the first scenes from Shane’s side the inconsistencies nearly made me stop reading. I’m not sure why she couldn’t cut and paste to keep the original story? Or was it copywriting or editing in the way...? It was quite distracting. I enjoyed the rest but couldn’t quite get over the inconsistencies.
Started this series with this book. While it's part of a series, I did not feel left out as generally happens when you pick a book mid series. I loved this book and will read the rest in this series. Sad that the mother had to die.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
It shouldn't have ended the way it did. Beside that everything else about the book was exceptional. I started it today and couldn't stop until I finished it. It was fantastic.
Book seven was filled with suspense, some humor and romance. Lacey and Shane finally get together but the ending is one I did not see coming. I had tears in my eyes and I know that will be another book in this series in the future.
Couldn't wait to read Shane's book but became quickly disappointed when the majority of the book was a repetition of scenes in Declan's book. The development of Shane's & Lacey's relationship was rushed and I hated the way the final chapters.
Shane and Lacy have been circling each other since the day they met. When Shane lost his leg, Lacy was there to save his life and to save him. Enjoy this installment of Mackenzie Security.
This is the 7th book in this series and in my opinion the most emotional of them all. The ending of this novel ripped my heart out. Great read but much better if you read them in order.
One of my favorites! I just love Shane MacKenzie, his gruff news and his attitude but what I love even more is the doctor who knocks him on his ass and changes his life for the better. Fantastic story!
Liliana Hart had done it again & felt like Noah Michael Levine didn't spoil the story with his nation. just as brilliant as ALL THE REST OF MCKENZIE's But heck warning you'll be 😢😢😢 at the end
