My favorite way to read the Bible all the way through in a year. The historical order really makes the Bible come alive and helps you get through the difficult parts (Leviticus...)
Instead of the normal grouping of books of the Bible, this version is structured in chronological order. It gave me a better sense of the timeline of events.
My husband and I have read through various versions of the Bible in a year, and for this time around we decided to read the Narrated Bible in Chronological Order. We were so not disappointed!
This Bible really puts things in perspective! It's as big-picturesque as a children's or family Bible, but as complete and detailed as any other adult Bible. It has the best of both worlds. You really get a deep reading, in context, with helpful commentary to go with it. We will definitely revisit this volume again and again.
This is such a great Bible! If you have trouble getting through the Old Testament, this version will really help you. It puts the books of the Bible in historical order so it makes the stories come alive and make much more sense. It also cuts out the repetitive parts so you don't feel like you're reading the same thing multiple times. I highly recommend reading the Bible this way!
I read the Gospels. The author does a good job of removing redundancies between the four books. The commentary helped me understand the context, but it felt too opinionated at times, coloring my interpretation. I prefer the commentary of Prager's The Rational Bible.
The narrated bits were not much of the content. Reading the Bible in chronological order was interesting, and two of my favorite parts were the grouping together of the laws and the psalms.
Reading the Bible chronologically is different from meditative reading for study, but it gave me a different perspective on the Bible that I found helpful and interesting. I really loved the chronological format–reading the Psalms and prophets mixed with the history passages in the Old Testament, and the epistles mixed in with Acts in the New Testament was a very interesting perspective shift, and I often found myself continuing to read for long chunks of time because I enjoyed the format so much.
I only read the narrated parts of this chronologically arranged, selected readings of, the Bible. It was wonderfully revealing of what was really happening with many old testament passages. The way it summarized the history of the Hebrew people and the nation that was and again became Israel was fantastic. It was a great companion to my reading of the One Year Bible.
It was interesting to read a chronological point of view, I read it along side a Oxford bible with Apocrypha, I often felt like I was reading the same thing over and over and over and over. Which was likely a remnant of the oral tradition as well as the fact that I was reading two of the same books in different orders.
I am now reading Smith's Chronological Bible for the 10th time, each time I learn something new as I become more aware of the text. I really enjoy Smith's comments along the way, filling in with history at that time of scripture. Smith has done an outstanding work and it only gets better with each new reading.
I found the narration provided by Smith to be helpful in appreciating the times and culture. Reading the Bible chronologically is a fresh change to daily Bible reading over the usual organization by books. It's worth buying the book just to read the Gospels this way... again and again.
Loved reading the Bible in Chronological order. It is so much easier and more like reading God's story when you read it in the order in which it happened.
