READ ALL OF THE METATRON MYSTERIES by James Glass *The Murdered Metatron *The Dispossessed (Available February 15, 2014)
The voice of God is dead.....
When John Smith wakes from a coma in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania he remembers nothing of his past except that he might have tried to commit suicide. In an effort to pay the bills he becomes a private detective and is hired by a strange pair of clients who are determined to find out who killed the Voice of God. The clues lead him to the doorstep of the strange and reclusive Virgil Calahan and a hundred year old crime.
James Glass enjoys his privacy, but frequently finds that he plays an unwilling host to Xircon. When not visiting red light districts of red light cities, he can frequently be found contemplating life in the seediest of libraries.
The Murdered Metatron, first in a series by James Glass, follows amnesiac John Smith as he struggles to keep his private investigation office afloat, protect himself from dodgy clientele, and find out what is behind the dark curtain of his past. John is surrounded by vividly written characters, and their interactions are often laugh-out-loud amusing. Intrigues and interesting twists start at the beginning and never let up. Heaven and hell, angels and demons, murder, mayhem, the occult and a healthy dose of humor make The Murdered Metatron a must-read! Keep an eye out for The Dispossessed - book two in The Murdered Metatron Series by James Glass.
I was provided an Advance Reader Copy by this book's publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I'm so glad this book is the first in a trilogy because I liked it so much, I need more of these characters in new adventures.
John Smith has awoken from a coma after an apparent suicide attempt with no memory and two scars on his back that itch like crazy. He does what any of us would do in this situation, and gets his PI license. Two mysterious men cloaked in black hire him to find a missing man who might have information about a murder. The unraveling of this mystery wasn't plot or clue heavy, but was so unexpected and emotionally interesting, I was hooked.
The author, James Glass, shows great skill with his characters. The interactions, especially between John Smith and the two men cloaked in black (giving you their names would be spoilerish), are full of deft humor that deepen your understanding of them as individuals, but also manage convey a gritty sense of danger which ultimately comes to fruition with a ingenious turn near the conclusion.
The editing and formatting are invisible, which is to say, incredibly well done. The cover art is highly professional, beautiful, and fitting to the work.
I can't wait for the next installment in this series!
Imagine waking up after being in a coma with no clue of who you are or where you live…or…anything about your past! That is what happened to John Smith. He had no recollection of anything and the only identifying thing about him were two very long scars on his back and since no one had answered the ads placed to find anyone who might know who he is…they were not much help. In order to support himself John becomes a private investigator which doesn’t seem to prosperous for him until one day two strange men come into his office to hire him. That is where the story unfolds and gets even stranger. I won’t give away any spoilers… so I will say that even though this is a novella it is a very good story that had me reading until the very end non-stop! This is a very well written mystery that also has a few funny moments in it that I chuckled at. Mr. Glass has a very descriptive way to his writing that helps you picture the scenes in your mind and keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next. With twists and turns and unexpected moments….this is a must read for all the mystery buffs out there! Definitely a “recommend to a friend book”.
A Snowy Monday Morning Review for you...The Murdered Metatron By James Glass: First I have to say I was totally surprised by this story. When I first stared the book I had no idea what to expect. To my VERY Pleasant Surprise, this story takes us on such an unexpected adventure involving John Smith, our main character who wakes from a coma, after an attempted suicide with no memory and retakes control of his life and becomes a P.I. Add in a A very Interesting cast of Characters including Angels, Demons and a Diner. The Story reveals why John attempts suicide, why these Demons and Angels are "after him" And what does his Father have to do with all of this? This story is told with such detail that you feel you are there with them AND add in some humor and you have a book that will take you by the soul and bring you in. I can't say enough how much i Loved this book! I HIGHLY recommend this read. I give this book 5 magical daggers.. VERY WELL DONE!!
I picked up this book on a free day, unsure whether or not it would actually be to my liking. The description tugged at me, and seemed interesting enough to pick up. In search of something to read, I decided to give it a try- and I'm glad I did.
John Smith is a PI, and not a very successful one. Until the day two men call and offer him a job- and a large paycheck. Tracking down Virgil Callahan was the easy part- learning the story behind the man was the hard part.
And just when you think you know how the story ends, it changes again and again. Full of twists and turns and with a shocking ending, I recommend this story to anyone with the taste for the paranormal.
After the first page, one thought resonated in the wake of Mr. Glass’s noir detail, outstanding voice, and page-burning intrigue.
Oh my lord this guy can write.
Normally I shy away from novellas as so many turn out to be overstretched shorts or not-fully-realized novels that leave me wanting and sore at time misspent. The Murdered Metatron totally broke that mold. The story is not just well imagined; it hits mission complete while cracking the cover to a sequel sure to be even better than the first.
The noir setting holds all the detail of a typical smoke and shadow gumshoe… so Mr. Glass turns the whole thing on its head, introducing demons as clients, a creepy celestio-inferno co-op, and a fresh take on the underworld administration process that leaves traditional Judeo-Christian adjudication looking like a clogged Social Security office. Characters are well rendered with individual quirks and action-over-description that sets each apart, following an ever twisting plot. There is never a dull moment and the pacing fits the story well in terms of both mood-to-action and overall interest capture.
While pacing, plot, and cool characters make this a good, four-star story, Mr. Glass’s voice is what launched it well beyond five stars for me. The wit and realism is incredible. You can practically hear the accents and not once does the writer fall on phonetic crutches and gimmicks to bring his people, demons, and angels to life. He skillfully presents each character by virtue of setting, syntax, and action. James Glass draws out his voices by drawing his readers in, and that takes serious talent.
A creepy noir setting, charming and sometimes disturbing players, and a voice that delivers a story with blazing intrigue and character all of its own. The Murdered Metatron is well worth the read. A solid five stars and gladly anticipating the sequel, The Dispossessed.
The concept of this story is very intriguing. A man wakes up from a coma with no idea who he is or why he is in the hospital. He has two scars running down the length of his back and he possibly tried to commit suicide. Meet John Smith, private investigator.
This story instantly drew me in. James Glass has a wonderful skill at mood setting. The story has a dark quality, yet you find humor throughout. The Murdered Metatron is filled with a cast of unforgettable characters. I loved the way the story was told, with little bits and pieces of the past slowly being revealed. The story has some twists and kept me guessing until the end.
I am a fan of mysteries and this one hooked me. I anxiously await the second installment.
I was given an advanced review copy from the publisher.
An indifferent view on humanity from the residents of heaven and hell. Angels, demons, and private investigators. A wonderful, fast paced and gritty tale of demons trying to find a certain person for a crime committed against god.
I love it when a book makes me have an intense need to find and read the further books in the series.
Put together a couple of demons, a Private Investigator who needs his own to figure out who he is in light of his amnesia and a mystery involving more heavenly (or hellish) characters and you get a fast and fun read. It's like "film noir" on paper, complete with the demons learning about human behavior from old black and white films. Sam Spade must have influenced them! Ready to go on to the next in the series!
I like the author's unique concepts about how angels/demons interact. It was small, fun book to read and I will read more in the series. Love that fact that the author is local and took time to visit with our book club!
Short, but a nice detective story. It's more of a bite than a meal; thankfully, the author wrote a second book in the line, and seems to have plans for more.
