Bane was created by an Ecran scientist to travel to distant stars. But, the Ecran military quickly realized how a wormhole generator could be used as a weapon against their only enemy, Meran. After a successful test, a Marine detachment led by Bassar Raad is transferring the weapon of mass destruction to a secret lab. This was Meran’s only chance to seize this terrible weapon and save their planet.
Rick Marion Lewis was a privateer for the Meranian government with a special knack for stealing ships. His handler in the Meran Intelligence Directorate (MID) assigned Rick to steal Bane and return it to the MID. With Tessa Staffa at his side, Rick chases down Bane to save his planet from certain destruction.
Bane can be found under the following categories: Science Fiction Short Stories, Military Science Fiction, Science Fiction Adventure, Science Fiction Romance, and Space Opera.
I grew up reading fantasy books and watching science fiction whenever I could. When I was young, I played role playing games within the fantasy genre. Close to the end of my military career, I started to write. It was something I always wanted to do but never did. I wrote several science fiction stories, but now I am focusing on epic high fantasy for young and new adults.
This story has a lot of potential and characters that I would like to know more about. Even the weapon idea really caught my interest and made me want to find out what was going to happen. The ending made me almost cheer. I really enjoyed it.
But ...
This would have been really good - 4 1/2, even 5 star - without the unrealistic, awkward romance that, frankly, was not necessary. I mean, as soon as it started, I felt like it was a cop-out, like the author wasn't sure about his story and stuck that in to catch people's attention. And, to make matters worse, he's just been hurt during interrogation and they're captured in a cell and that's when they decide to do it?!?! *rolls eyes* I do appreciate that we didn't get full on description. It just wasn't necessary and seemed really out of place when it came to the rest of the story. Like pages from another book were stuck in as a trick. Bad decision.
Note: I received a copy of this story in exchange for my honest review.
There was an interesting plot however the characters weren't entirely believable. Some of the things they said and decided to do seemed to be out of character or didn't make much sense. My husband and I were reading it together and we laughed and laughed at some points, but I rather think those spots weren't supposed to be funny. Though I do think the characters need improvement, we still found them amusing. it was an interesting yarn and a quick, easy read. A fun way to pass an evening.
A great sci-fi story set at a time following a period of constant war between humans who have colonized two planets. One side are secretly testing a weapon which can annihilate whole planets. Enter Rick, a privateer, and we are led into a breathless world of action and thrills where the stakes are high and the choices momentous. The story had me gripped from the start. Action-packed, full of suspense, nail-biting. Not to be missed.
This review was very different before I read that Steven Atwood was revamping it remove the romance bit. Before I focused on how I just wasn't feeling the romance. I mean, it just moved too fast and needed a little bit more to make me feel that the characters were into it.
But that's not the point.
Because like I said, Atwood has said he's revamping.
Meaning you'll get the interesting story about to basically twin civilizations fighting over finite resources. When an invention that should help everyone is turned into a weapon, a group of pirates is sent to retrieve said device.
What you get is this great story about doing what's right, and what you feel you need to do to protect those you love.
With an amazing twist at the end that made me smile for hours.
(I'm not posting a star rating until I read an updated copy.)
Bane is the kind of story that pulls you i and keeps you in its grip. The premise that the characters are descendants of a environmentally exhausted planet earth, now inhabiting a pair of opposing planets, gives the story a close to home flavor. the idea that a brilliant scientific discovery that is coveted by the government/military for less sinister purposes truly reflects on our present day society. Although this is a short story, Mr .Atwood could justifiably turn this into a full novel with room to spare for a series. The writing is top-notch and well crafted. Very pleased with my decision to buy this story.
Sci-fi story with a morals lesson. The question is who has enough morals to save a billion people plus. The answer will surprise you. The characters are written well but lack some mention to each characters past and who they really are. The MID Tessa has little information and I wonder if she could not be defined a bit more. This is a reasonably short story and quite worth the read
