I love how Lutz, the family, and some merchants are finally embracing Myne's ideas. Her determination is unending. This volume ends on a cliffhanger that makes me need the next volume immediately.
Myne is an inconsistent character. At times she seems wise beyond her years, and fairly savvy about people, but then she’ll make extremely stupid blunders that show her as being unable to understand how to deal with things. I understand she’s frustrated, but she’s acting like a child when mentally she is an adult. Why not just explain to her mom that she is setting aside some stuff for a purpose, please don’t burn them?
It’s weird to me that she knows how to make washi - then why waste her time on all the other attempts? Saying it’s too difficult doesn’t make sense given how difficult the other methods were anyway. Honestly, she’s also not a person that cares about hardship if she can get books.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Tuuli turn seven and beings her apprenticeship meaning Myne is supposed to pick up the slack in the chores. Thankfully Lutz is more than willing to help wherever he can, including Myne's struggle to make some sort of book.
However, the universe clearly doesn't want Myne to have book because she's thwarted at every turn. Not to mention, she's highly susceptible to fevers. But she clearly knows more than the average commoner which is raising suspicions.
Ahhh, this volume was lovely! I love Myne and her interactions with people. Lutz is one of my favorite characters, so I was happy this volume had more of his character. The whole time I was reading this, I was dying to make some paper! It makes me want to get up and craft. I'm interested in the addition of magic to the world- I'm eager to see where this goes!
I also took note of this on my first read, but I am sometimes frustrated with Main's family. They see the things Main does as play or nonsense. Is it because of ignorance and they don't know any better? Is it because of Main's age?
Myne is making moves on her quest to create books to surround herself with, but I'm mostly here for the art. I like the contrast between the ages of the kids and their skills, with Myne having the smallest, weakest body but also the knowledge of her previous adult self.
Very nice! Even more insight about Freida written by the story's author at the end of this volume. It's worth reading the Light Novel and the Manga as well.
Lutz is now my favorite character, I like how he always wants to help Myne. I keep thinking that the story will get more interesting but my enjoyment level is usually around a 3.5/5
I decided to break my reading plan since three of the manga cover ALMOST what two of the light novels do. It's not a perfect ratio, since art dictates just how much can be drawn (literally!) from the light novels, but the light novels don't have any particular limitations.
That said, I bumped this volume up to five stars, where the prior volumes got four, since Benno, who finally shows up here, is one of my favourite characters! Possibly ever! :) I can't even explain why; he's grumpy and no-nonsense and VERY frustrated by Myne (even though he brings it on himself by taking her on in the first place, greedy merchant!), but his character just sort of sticks with me the way no other characters do. Some of it is what happens to him (and what happened to him), but those are spoilers. He doesn't do anything particularly amazing in this volume, since it's just where he, Myne, and Lutz are first introduced to each other, but he looks particularly good in this, where the other characters feel just the *slightest* bit off-model from what I expect.
Maybe that just speaks to his character design that he just always looks good, no matter who draws him? :)
Probably, also, Benno is the first one to pick up solidly on Myne's quirks, that she isn't *just* a commoner girl, but he also knows not to rock the boat such that he would lose the advantage he has being acquainted with her. I like clever characters, and resourceful ones. Like, Lutz is a great friend, but he's regularly in what he feels like is Myne's shadow (even though Myne is actually like twenty years old in that six-year-old body!), and yet he has great qualities under his inferiority complex, especially since he's determined to work hard to get out from under Myne's shadow and at least be able to stand on his own two feet.
There's an amount I wish I could erase what I know of what happens to them later, so to get a different ending for them, but I guess that's not to be... :(
Anyway, Benno! Absolutely recommend if you're a fan, too! :) (and also if a fan of the main series—light novel or manga)
The 3rd volume introduces a new twist which was really interesting! This volume starts with Tuuli's baptism. Myne, the main character, notes that Tuuli's baptism dress has finer details. She braids her sister's hair as well, something that has the others wondering. Myne then visits Otto at the city gate and helps him with his paperwork. After the baptism, Tuuli is given gifts and Myne is given a knife. She gets the idea, for her long quest to make paper, to use the knife to cut strips of wood. She also asks Otto how her friend Lutz can become a traveling merchant. Myne's plan to make paper with wood goes up in flames: her mother uses the strips for the fire in the kitchen. Myne, with Lutz, make pens out of water and ashes. Then Myne has a high fever again and sees fuzzy images. Lutz pulls her out of the illness and finally she begins to question what type of illness she keeps coming down with. Myne and Lutz are introduced to Benno, Otto's wealthy brother in law. Benno and Otto are impressed with Myne's hair, that she washes with a special homemade shampoo. Myne also reveals her plan to make paper. Benno offers to buy the paper when she has it made. Myne plans out how to make paper and realizes she will need nails to make the pressing frames. Otto offers the nails if Myne will wash his wife's hair. Then Lutz and Myne begin making papermaking frames. Myne and Lutz are invited to Benno's for a dinner and discover he wants to use magic to have them sign a contract. The deal is Myne will give her shampoo recipe and in return, Benno will provide papermaking supplies. Benno's assistant gives Myne and Lutz some quick lessons in bookkeeping, then they sign the contract with blue ink. Afterwards, they press their own blood, from a cut on the thumb, to the signature which magically binds them to the contract. In this book, there are questions about Myne's abilities, despite her young age, and the mysterious fevers she gets so frequently. The adults around Myne cannot figure out how she is so capable. Again, the illustrations are nicely done. I also like Myne and Lutz's friendship, as well as Otto as a strong, kind figure in their lives.
This manga series just got SO MUCH BETTER after that cliffhanger ending. This volume has been the best. After a build-up of the previous two novels, this world is slowly expanding with more world building, characters, and a possible magic system. I love watching "Myne" try to figure out how to create books in this world, especially being a huge book-lover, but after a bit that part of the series can seem a little tedious. So with this volume, these additions of characters and the world-building seem great for the series. I can't wait to see where it goes next!
