Ugh!!! First the book starts off really slow and then it ends too abruptly. I feel like the ending was rushed and wasn't finished. It was a lot of drama through out both of the cases Bennett was working, and the book ended without addressing any of it. Also, the killer was so nasty, psychotic, and out of the ordinary that his death for me was not horrible enough. He should have suffered. Again, ugh!!!! James usually gives me the juice and keeps me on the edge of my seat, but not with this one!!! Burn, not at all, more like a flicker.

Another enjoyable and totally readable book in this excellent series.

Michael Bennett continues to raise his ten children in a thoroughly commendable fashion despite being a single dad with a very time consuming job. He always seems to find a suitable substitute to care for the team when he has to be absent.

In Burn he ends up working for two Departments on two separate but highly motivating cases. It is all very exciting as he runs around looking for diamond thieves and cannibals. Yes cannibals. You need to read the book!

There's a bit of a slow burn romance going on too which is unusual for this type of book. I wonder how many books it will be before they make it to the altar. I am sure I will enjoy all of them anyway!

Once again I return to my analogy that James Patterson books are like junk food -- they taste good, it's hard to stop once you've started, and there's virtually no nutritional value. And just like I like a good Twinkie every once in awhile, I also occasionally enjoy a good James Patterson. Michael Bennett, in particular, is my guilty pleasure. They're fairly predictable, not all that well-written, and read like a cheesy action flick with a heart of gold most of the time.

However, this entry into the Bennett series was a little odd. The story felt sort of scattered and disjointed -- there were SO many cases and issues being dealt with, it was hard to keep track of who was who. The custody case annoyed me -- that plot line was made into a big, huge deal and then ultimately got dealt with in only a couple of paragraphs. In fact, most of the cases seemed to be done away in a similar matter -- I think more time was devoted to Michael making googly eyes at Mary Catherine. And don't get me wrong -- I like that pairing, but when I'm reading a Michael Bennett novel, I want action and mystery to be the focal point, with a little bit of family stuff on the side. Hell, even Seamus' health crisis was handled in such a blase way that it seemed odd! I think this book falls prey to the mistake of trying to cram in TOO much stuff.

That being said, I really, really liked Michael's experiences with the new squad. I almost hope he'll decide to leave major crimes and head up this ombudsman squad instead. I'm sure there could still be some interesting mysteries to be had and it would be a new dynamic for the series.

I would say my rating for this one is closer to 2 1/2 stars -- I liked it enough to finish it, but felt it was severely lacking in some places and that it didn't capture the usual feel of a Michael Bennett novel.

From Book 1: As he faces a devastating personal loss, Detective Michael Bennett is about to take on the most sinister challenge of his career: a kidnapping crisis that could destroy the most powerful people in America.

(First Read) The nation has fallen into mourning after the unexpected death of a beloved former First Lady, and the most powerful people in the world gather in New York for her funeral. Then the inconceivable occurs: Billionaires, politicians, and superstars of every kind are suddenly trapped within one man's brilliant and ruthless scenario. Bennett, father of ten, is pulled into the fray. As the danger escalates, Michael is hit with devastating news: After fighting for many years, his wife has succumbed to a terrible disease.
As New York descends into chaos, Bennett has lost the great love of his life and faces raising his ten devastated children alone-and rescuing 34 hostages. Day after day, Bennett confronts the most ruthless man he has ever dealt with, a man who kills without hesitation and counters everything the NYPD and FBI throw at him with impunity. As the entire world watches and the tension boils to a searing heat, Bennett has to find a way out-or face responsibility for the greatest debacle in history.

(SECOND READ) Detective Michael Bennett finally returns to New York City-and to the most unsettling, horrific case of his career in this #1 New York Times bestseller.
At last, Detective Michael Bennett and his family are coming home to New York City. Thanks to Bennett, the ruthless crime lord whose vengeful mission forced the Bennett family into hiding has been brought down for good.

I was so excited about reading this book. It was electric as the plot played out. I could not put it down. I even stayed in bed this morning so that I could finish. The problem is there is no denouement. Boom. The book is over and some sappy romance finishes the novel. Please give me more explanation of the unraveling.

The books can be easily read in a day and move along at a fast pace. Some readers feel cheated because they feel they should not have to pay as much for short books. I am happy to read a book which engrossed me so much that I feel you are actually drawn into it. Just finish it better!

I'm a big Michael Bennett fan. Was overall an enjoyable read, recommend other readings of this series. Highly Recommend.

Can he just get with Mary Catherine already ?

Alright, so I've officially read the book. I have to say, I love Michael Bennet. I think that he truly exists somewhere in the world and I would be happy to have him exist in mine! Move over husband, make room for Michael Bennet!

I don't want to give anything away -- because that would not be cool. But I absolutely love these characters and the funny way that the story is told in a lighthearted way. I love his attitude and spunk! He seems like he's totally a New Yorker!

I can't wait for #8 to come out.

Burn is the seventh book in the Michael Bennett series by prolific American author, James Patterson. It is co-written with Michael Ledwidge. Detective Michael Bennett and his family are back from their witness protection stint in California, finally back home in NYC. But, relegated to an unwanted position (head of the mayor’s Ombudsman Outreach Squad) by a Chief of Detectives with a grudge, Bennett would much rather be on the Major Crime Squad.

Ironically, when he does get reassigned back to the Crime Squad to solve a spate of jewellery heists, he cannot let go of a case his Outreach Squad was investigating: the murder, deemed suicide by the local Harlem PD, of a young cop on their squad, Officer Naomi Chast. Chast was investigating a report of possible cannibalism, but now her computer and all her notes are missing.

Bennett spreads himself thin, covering both Squads, and is also distracted by his budding romance with the Irish nanny of his ten adopted children, Mary Catherine. The sudden appearance of the father of one of those children does not help matters either. The jewel thieves are quick and clever and the cannibals are elusive. Bennett seems to be able to play fast and loose with his Outreach Squad, seconding them to surveillance on jewellery shops without hesitation.

This instalment of Patterson’s Michael Bennett series gives the reader plenty of action, a bit of romance, some criminals with grisly appetites, a car and bike chase and an exciting climax. If the reader can mentally edit out the prologue with its cheap tricks and silliness, then this is a pretty good read.

Detective Michael Bennett and his family, including Mary Catherine and Seamus finally returned to New York after nine months in protective custody. Bennett's previous case was over and they were all safe to return. Instead of home schooling, the kids could finally head back to school; see their friends; settle into their old routines once again. And when Bennett headed back into his office he was looking forward to starting back on the job, getting stuck into the crimes of the city.

But an unexpected change of plans meant he was to take over a fledgling unit; the Outreach Squad which was designed to help the down and out on the streets. His initial shock when he saw the state of the squad room members turned to anger – and that fuelled a desire to make it work. As Bennett got to know the men and women on his team, they suddenly found themselves face to face with a horror they couldn’t begin to imagine. Forced to face the fact that the reports could well be true, they immersed themselves deeply into the criminal elements of the city.

With Bennett stretched thin, working three important cases at the one time, suddenly there was a problem on the home front as well. He had no idea how he would solve this one, but it was vital he did. As the dangers intensified, the criminals seemed to be one step ahead of the police. Would Bennett and his men find and stop the madmen who were terrorising the residents of the city before it was too late?

Another excellent Michael Bennett thriller. The action wasn’t quite as full on as the last two, but it was pretty fast paced and intense. I enjoy Bennett’s character and love Mary Catherine and Seamus. A great cast of characters and I look forward to the next in the Michael Bennett series by James Patterson. Recommended.

Mike B. is back in NYC. The plot of the underground cannibals is weirdly entertaining to read (seriously that couple who Bennett and Brooklyn sit down next beside only to have to the worlds, “does it really taste like chicken?”). Not to mention reading about the different types of cannibalism was educational (though not sure a majority of the readers seek this wisdom). On to the other subplots, MC and Mike’s relationship is still an amusing storyline to continually follow; and the Chrissy situation is just emotional to read about. Looking forward to moving on to Alert since many people are reviewing it as their favorite installment.

My quick and simple overall: entertaining and only takes around five hours or so to read.

⭐️ Synopsis:

Bennet and family have safely returned to NYC. But MC is gone back to Ireland to help her poor mother leave this earth for almost the whole book! Rejoice! You want a crazy action plot? How about wealthy cannibals killing young women in order to dine on them in weird a&$ buildings in New York? How about diamond thieves?

⭐️ What I thought:

The authors seem to have their mojo back more in this book. Less bombs, less MC, less political ranting

Narcolepsy might explain how this book ended. I think James Patterson just fell asleep and quickly woke up and said "I'm done. Let me just quickly finish this up". This had SO much potential! A really gripping and creepy story line that kept me intrigued all the way to the end. Usually the Mike Bennett books are pretty good compared to some of his other works, but this one was just a disappointment. I am giving it three stars because I enjoyed it until the last 10%.

This audio book had a slow beginning at first but then the slow burn took over. Tale is focused upon a detective coming out of the witness protection program and returning to New York City.

While there is an investigation happening in regards to "legal" cannibalism the side stories about the man's children and his lady love will stay with me years from now.

Narrated by Danny Mastrogiorgio who does a fine job playing the tough guy voice to the Irish lass to the kids.

OVERALL GRADE: B to B plus.

After reading countless books by Patterson and his co-authors du jour, I'm aware of two things when I open up the next one: It won't tax my aging brain or put me on the edge of my seat, and the pages will whiz by in a flash. This one, the seventh in the series featuring Detective Michael Bennett and his rather large family, fit that pattern perfectly.

Well, almost; I gave four stars to each of the other six, but I just can't muster up more than three for this one (although I'd give it 3-1/2 if it were possible). Exactly why I'm not totally sure, except this one seems to be more of a mishmash of story lines, with an ending that sort of left things hanging and felt thrown together at the last minute.

Here, Bennett and his crew return to their New York City home; they've been spending time in witness protection after Bennett captured a crime biggie who was intent on payback. Shortly after his return, Bennett is called in by a boss who's carrying a grudge; instead of a pat on the back for bringing a top criminal to justice, Bennett is reassigned to what's called an "Outreach Squad" in Harlem.

The ragtag squad members have been hardly working, but with a few carefully chosen phrases, Bennett turns them into professionals who are working hard (yeah, right)! Most of the calls to the squad are complaints from neighborhood residents that aren't even police matters, and when one speaks of seeing some well-heeled dudes having a strange get-together in an abandoned building, Bennett figures the caller is a nut case. That is, until a charred body turns up in that building - bringing a whole new meaning to barbecue spit.

Ah, but we're not done yet. After a short time at the squad, Bennett is called by an old friend who's pulled some strings to get him back to his old job to help capture a team of robbers who are hitting high-end jewelry stores. Of course, Bennett's offer to return is conditioned on his solving the case and bringing the thieves to justice within two weeks. Because Bennett has bonded so well with his new crew, he just can't force himself to abandon them - so he insists on investigating both cases simultaneously.

As if all that weren't enough, Bennett continues to deal with feelings for his children's "nanny" and housekeeper, the very Irish and beauteous Mary Catherine, the health crisis of a close family member and - whew! - the threat that he'll lose one of his adopted daughters to her biological father.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger - I told you early on about the story line jumble. All things considered (and clearly there are plenty of things going on here), it's not an awful book, but I'd at least wait till the paperback comes out and it won't cost as much.

This is the 7th book in three Michael Bennet series and was a decent outing. There was a lot going on in this one. With jewel thieves, cannibals, a domestic abuse murder, Bennet changing departments, real life dad coming for one of Michael’s adopted kids, and Mary Katherine’s mom dying.

There was chaos everywhere, but it tied together nicely in the end and there wasn’t one storyline that felt outplayed or dragged on and this chugged along quite quickly.

Despite Mary Katherine not being around a lot in this book they really pushed the whole Bennet loving her angle pretty hard. Michael was so wishy washy in previous instalments, it was a character development we all knew was coming, but was still surprised how 180 his attitude towards her was. It was still interesting to see.

Overall thumbs up!!

A REAL DISAPPOINTMENT!

This book isn't even close to what I expect from James Patterson, and I've read most of his adult titles. The dialogue is forced and redundant. The multiple plots are not developed . . . nor are they resolved. And when I turned the page and saw Epilogue, I felt like I had missed about 50 pages of the story somehow. If this was a marketing ploy to make me want to buy the next book in the series, forget it! I'll spend my time and money on other authors.

The eighth installment of the Michael Bennett series is classic Patterson. Expect a fast pace, witty retorts, and short cliff-hanger chapters.

Bennett and his family return to NYC after their extended stay in California under witness protection and an explosive confrontation with a Mexican crime lord. Politicos have been at play while Bennett is away, resulting in the ace-detective's reassignment to the island of misfit toys, also known as the Ombudsman Outreach Squad. Never one to back away from expected failure, Bennett shapes the lives and careers of young officers, infuriates superiors, and hunts cannibals. Yes, I said cannibals. This all occurs as he raises his dozen or so adopted children and romances his Irish Nanny. What's not to like.

A fun read which rates a 4.2 on the expanded scale.

To me this was the best of the Michael Bennett series. I kept on turning the pages and trying to guess what was going to happen, usually I was wrong but I loved the anticipation.

I found myself wishing I didn't have to put the book down and then when I finished it I was a little bummed. This series just keeps on getting better and better.

I know that there are all types of people living in New York but does this include Cannibals? That’s what I’m afraid is true in this graphic episode in the life of Detective Michael Bennett. On the personal level, one of his kid’s biological father steps into the picture and now wants custody of one of Detective Bennett’s kids and Mary Catherine had to return to Scotland to tend to a family emergency.

The beginning is odd and the ending is unlike James Patterson. The storyline is somewhat crazy and jumble. I did enjoy the book...just feels sort of rushed.

Michael and his family get to return home and instead of getting a promotion Michael is given a job where no one really does any work. He gets it going again and is called to solve a puzzling jewelry thief. Mary Catherine is called back to Ireland because of her mother’s health so Michael and the children are on their own.

Let me start with, "I love Michael Bennett" even though it feels like the same story just different names. The plots are predictable and the endings are the same but I love the feel of this series. I get that homey sense of comfort when reading these books.

Burn seemed to focus more on Mike and Mary Catherine that of the crimes being committed. Now I understand when you fall for someone that person is the only thing you can think about which is what happened here, well maybe not so much for Mike but or the reader. I really think that Mike needs to take the plunge and tie the knot with MC because that's where it should be headed anyway.

In Burn, there are diamond thieves hitting the jewelry stores, people cannibalizing those who won't be missed and Chrissy has a biological father that has come to claim his daughter. That pretty much sums up this book.

I will continue with this series because I do love me some Michael Bennett and can't wait to see what his next adventure is. I'm just ready to move past the on and off of Mike and MC and ready to get to the hard core of the action.

Another Patterson book that doesn't end properly. There are many unanswered questions left up in the air. I was very upset when the last Alex Cross book was a cliffhanger but this one is not even that. This one is just plain unfinished with so many loose ends not tied up. The book has an " Epilogue" that tells us nothing. I would not read this book until the next Michael Bennett comes out so that maybe this story is wrapped up before the next one starts. Too bad, because it was a page turner until the end. It left me feeling that I had an unfinished copy.

The Bennetts are back in New York City after being placed in a Witness Protection as the cartel is after Michael since he killed their leader. During this time, several people have a bounty on Michael and his families head and if that wasn't bad enough Michael has some family issues to deal with. One of his daughter's biological father has come back into the picture and wanted his daughter and will fight till he has custody despite being with Michael's family from the day she was born and Seamus - Michael's Dad has had a heart attack. Will the Bennett family survive just as they have before? After the cartel bust went down, Michael is in some of the police chiefs' bad books and has been reassigned to an inner-city squad filled with police rejects and the misfits. Can Michael whip the team into shape and help them become the policeman and policewomen they trained to be? What will happen though when his team stumble across a rich man's cannibal feast and as people get closer to the crime, they either disappear or die? As I have read so many James Patterson novels, I think for me nowadays the best thing about reading his series is being reunited and reacquainted with the characters as you feel like you are part of the Cross family or NYPD or regarding the Michael Bennett series - The Bennett family Tribe. If you love your mystery novels and are a fan of James Patterson's Michael Bennett series, then check out Book #7 - Burn and for those who love the romance - we get a development into the Michael Bennett and Mary Catherine love story.

While Burn is a standalone it works better if you've read the first six before. In Burn, Mike, Seamus, Mary Catherine and the kids return to to New York. However Mike is transferred to another squad and one of his kids' biological parents comes to try and get custody back all while Mary Catherine had to go back home to deal with a family emergency and Major Cases wants Mike back to work on a major crime. Brilliant jewel thieves, cannibals, and family all combine to make this thriller a compelling read. Burn was this summer's beach read for me that I left in my chair. It was one that I could dive in and out of throughout the summer and easily remember what was happening at the time. I like the fast-paced energy of these books and how everything all comes together.

Not a topic you see in a book very often, but it SHOCKS you when it does. This is a definite read. This series is really getting better and better. It is for sure a good read. I am excited about the next book. While I know Patterson's name is on this book. I've read his work and I would say he is likely a bit more involved in this one. I say that because it has a lot of the Alex Cross feel too! It is a great set of books.

By now I know exactly what to expect when I open a James Patterson novel. His heroes will be classic good guys with just enough personal baggage to keep us invested in them. His villains will be psychopaths hellbent on taking down the hero. The story will unfold through short chapters that usually end in mini cliff-hangers. All combined, these elements keep the pages turning quickly and provide a mild diversion from everyday life. It is a tried and true formula that has turned Patterson into one of the bestselling authors of all time. Even when I complain about his use of co-authors to churn out multiple books a year and the deficit in quality this has caused, I can't help but come back for more. And so I started Burn, the seventh installment in the Michael Bennett series knowing pretty much what I was in store for.

Michael Bennett and his brood of adopted children finally return home to New York after being hidden in witness protection for most of the last novel. Despite having nabbed one of the most notorious drug lords in the world, Bennett is not given the hero's welcome he expected. Instead, the NYPD has assigned him to lead a community outreach squad in Harlem. The poorly supported squad lacks the resources and personnel to adequately assist the large population that it has been charged with. The bureaucratic systems that people have to follow to provide tips to the squad means that potentially valuable information goes unnoticed by the people who are supposed to act on it. When a burned body is found at a property of a previously ignored tip, Bennett vows to correct the broken system and bring justice to the people he has been tasked with serving.

Just as Michael is starting to implement changes at the squad, he gets pulled into another high profile case. This time a string of jewelry heists have left the department stumped. When the higher ups beg Bennett to step in, he only agrees to assist if he can continue his duties with the outreach squad as well. Soon he finds himself back in the crazy juggling act that his turns into all too often. The stresses of work coupled with a budding romance with his live in nanny and the duties of being a single father begin to take their toll on him. But Michael is determined to give his best in all aspects of his life. He is the hero after all.

As I expected, Patterson delivered on all of the usual fronts. The Michael Bennett series is probably my second favorite Patterson saga behind the Alex Cross books, and Burn is certainly a worthy continuation of the story. More so than usual, I found the real joy of this novel was in reading about Michael's personal relationships with his family. That drama seemed to outweigh the more surface level crime threads in the book. In fact, with so much time devoted to developing a romance and maintaining the unique Bennett clan, the actual mystery was too brief. As I got to the last couple of pages, I would have even preferred a cliff-hanger that the rushed ending that we got. Still, Burn does nothing to deter me from looking forward to the next installment. The next time I'm looking for a quick and fun read, I'll definitely turn to a Patterson novel again.

The Bennett family is back in Patterson's latest addition to the series. After surviving a harrowing period in witness protection on the West Coast, Detective Michael Bennett and his brood of ten (plus two) are back in NYC for more adventure. When summoned to meet with the Chief of Detectives, Bennett learns that he is being reassigned, demoted in a way, to head up a squad in Harlem as part of the mayor's ombudsmen plan of community liaising. While trying to reorganise the squad, they are called to investigate the scene of an odd cannibalism group seen to be preying on young women in abandoned warehouses. Just as he gets things clicking with his new team, Bennett is assigned back to Major Cases, where a string of diamond heists have jewellers cowering in fear. As only Bennett can do (while balancing a personal life with ten children of his own), he keeps himself involved in both cases, hoping to tie everything off. What story would be complete without some personal drama to spice things up? Patterson has found his groove and Bennett explodes off the page in this thrilling tale.

This is the third recent Patterson novel I've read of late, all of which show that James Patterson may have shed the dust from his writing and found a new ability to captivate readers and critics alike. The story is fast-paced and the narrative is equally exciting. A noticeable smaller portion of the narrative dedicated to the evil-doers, from their own perspective, but that might be more Ledwidge than Patterson's regular doing. Perhaps some of the personal drama was handled a little too swiftly and gave the reader the sense that it was only there to offer a change of perspective, but it did home and pull on the heartstrings just enough to pique interest. Thoughtfully laid out and offering a wonderful set of new characters, even if they do not appear again.

Kudos, Messrs. Patterson and Ledwidge for your wonderful story and interesting addition to the series.
