Debbie Mason is the USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestselling author of the Christmas, Colorado series and the Harmony Harbor series. The first book in her Christmas, Colorado series, “The Trouble with Christmas,” was the inspiration for Hallmark’s “Welcome to Christmas.” Her books have been praised by RT Book Reviews for their “likable characters, clever dialogue, and juicy plots.” When Debbie isn’t writing, she enjoys spending time with her family in Ottawa, Canada.
Although predictable, this was a great addition to my Holiday line up of Christmas books.
Set in the small town of Christmas, Colorado everybody within the town knows each other and is quick to integrate themselves within the business of the two main characters and their "scandalous" relationship.
I mean, having everyone know my business is not a way I personally would want to live; however, I cannot get enough of these small towns and the community within it. Especially with the characters of this town such as Fred, Ted, and Nell.
This was a cute and predictable romance but it was entertaining nonetheless. With this style of novel, typically an ending can be predicted but the journey is what makes the story and the romance the most enjoyable.
I would recommend this as a quick and cozy Christmas read. Do not go into it with overly high expectations and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

It Happened at Christmas is book Three in the Christmas, Colorado Series. This is the story of Ethan O'Connor and Skylar 'Skye' Davis. I haven't yet read the previous book so for me this was a standalone book. Skye decided to go to her best friend after some bad money choices and life decisions. Now she runs right into Ethan who is so attractive but his views are different from hers. He is more structured with different political views. Where Skye is a flight risk and is more easy going. This was a really sweet second chance at love story I thought.
I enjoy Debbie Mason romance books, I just can't help it! They are sweet, have drama and comedy, and fulfill all the wants I have for a great, romantic escape.
This book is set in the town of Christmas, Colorado (you know, like most of this series). We follow Skylar Davis, a freelance writer/blogger who comes from a powerful and rich family (but, you know, her part of the fortune is gone) and Ethan O'Connor, a political figure who is hot, has a family with strong opinions and seems like a nice guy. A one night stand between two buddies turns out to be quite the date because Skylar finds out months down the road she is pregnant. Having two opposing views politically doesn't help all that much for Ethan's campaign.
This is a cozy romance that is an easy read. It's a nice book to curl up and just sink into. It's not overly complicated, it is romantic and doesn't make you want to rip your heart out. It's a lovely read! Cute books with happily, ever afters make me really happy.
It's also easy to pick up as a stand alone if you don't want to grab the other books. You don't need to know anything about the other characters to get this story, it'll just make you feel all warm and fuzzy when you read about characters you recognize.
I should have known that when I read the blurb for book, I wasn’t going to fall in love with the heroine. “Free-spirited” must be code for “flighty,” because if I had to describe Skylar in one word, that would be it. Please don’t get me wrong – I love good-intentioned and/or idealistic characters as much as the next person. But I feel like those kinds of characters have to be tempered with something else … something grounded and real. Skylar being free-spirited AND giving away all of her money just seemed … well, to be honest, it seemed a little dumb. To top it off, she didn’t give it ALL away trying to save the world. She gave people money for plastic surgery or to get other people out of financial trouble of their own. To me, that’s not someone trying to save the world – that’s just someone who’s really gullible.
Besides Skylar’s world view, I also didn’t like her as a person. She begged for a job from her friend who owns a bakery. And when Skylar goes to a political function as an employee of the bakery...
3 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a holiday romance story that totally won me over. A slow burn with continual drama. “She loves me, she loves me not.” There were many characters to follow in this saga which was confusing for me at first. I don’t care for it when an author introduces a bunch of characters within the first couple of chapters. Please, give me a minute to soak in these individual personalities before unleashing them all. This town was a close knit community in which everyone knew each other and participated in the usual drama taking place. In this saga, the political atmosphere and the Senate race was on everyone’s mind.
Ethan O’Conner was the HOT guy running for State Senate and was the main character in Christmas, Colorado. Skye/ a.k.a. Kendra was the striking Cup Cake Fairy Queen who had secretly won Ethan’s heart, and had spent some time in bed with the hottie over the summer. She was an animal activist, a liberal, vegan and the quick tempered rebel in the story. Ethan was none of these things. Skye’s persona brought chaos, disruption and disarray. Ethan was an organized conservative. Was she really the right woman for this man that was running for political office? His mother sure didn’t approve…well Skye is pregnant now and Ethan is determined to be a dad to his baby. The timing couldn’t be worse. The saga is entertaining and the flow of the Christmas season with the town can’t be mistaken. A somewhat predictable ending but a fun Christmas story.
I had a much harder time with this book. One of my biggest pet peeves in people is self-righteousness, and Skye had that in spades. She treats her friends poorly, lying to them, even after they've gone out of their way to help her. She's rude and self absorbed. She can't hold her tongue even though her friend is doing her a favor by hiring her. She runs through her vast fortune on dumb stuff and then we're supposed to feel bad for her. It's hard to root for someone when you find them so unlikable.
Ethan deserved better, and he was more interesting as a side character in the first two books.
The main reason I finished this book is because I enjoyed seeing the characters from the first two books.
I started this book not knowing if I would enjoy it however as I got into the story I started to really appreciate the authors development of the characters.
Skylar Davis whose past lifestyle has her perceived as egocentric spoiled, wild and rich returns to Christmas Colorado broke from several bad financial decisions and pregnant with the town’s mayor’s baby? What I liked about Skylar that in spite of her circumstance she didn’t give up. She was determined to make the best out of a bad situation. In spite of Ethan’s family’s reaction to her she decides to stand by Ethan and marry him, to aid in his quest for a senate seat but to do that she felt she had to change herself. When her past threatens his success she decides to go home. There, she confronts her father and finds out her past wasn’t what she had led herself to believe or what she had been told. Although her love for Ethan is strong Skylar knows she has to be herself if there is any chance for her future with him.
Ethan had a one night stand with Skylar and fell in love with her. Although they have entirely different political views, when she comes back to town in the middle of the campaign of this life, he knows that he wants to be there for her and their baby, much to the chagrin of his mother and campaign manager. He is devastated when Skylar disappears after performing so well during the campaign with no apparent reason. He goes looking for her and when he does find her he has to make some startling career decisions.
The love story between the two is well developed by the author and keeps the reader wanting to read more. It is funny, colorful and believable. A truly delightful read both during the Christmas season and all year round. I look forward to other Debbie Mason books.
*OBS would like to thank the publisher for supplying a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review*
Loved this book! This has been such a good series and this book doesn't disappoint. Skye, onetime rich girl who now is flat broke, has returned to Christmas to regroup. To say that Skye is a free spirit is underestimating her past life. Bad decisions and unscrupulous friends have brought her down but not out. When she has a one night stand with Ethan, a conservative who is running for State Senator, Skye knows it can't go anywhere. The laws of reproduction however, have a different take and the two end up together.
This is an interesting look at two very different people who have to learn to get along and find the positive in each other. Skye's flightiness is also her joy in life just as Ethan's seeming stodginess is safety and security. They each have parts that the other needs to be happy. They just need to make the outside forces pushing them and labeling them go away. There is an excellent mean girl who gets off lightly in my opinion. The great chemistry between Skye and Ethan adds both spice and humor to the book. As in any series, there are a lot of background characters from earlier books. It's always fun to see where they have gone in the happy ever after. The set up for the next story is in this book and it looks pretty darn good!
Skye had pretty much been a wild child, getting into one scrape after another. Now that she's older, she remains a force to be reckoned with, an animal rights activist, vegan, environmentalist, if it's a worthy cause she most likely supports it. When she comes to Christmas, Colorado, to be with her best friend, Madison, she ends up staying. In truth, she's hiding out from a scumbag who's out to get her. She figures Christmas is the last place anyone would look for her. And there's the little matter of her trust fund - which she managed to blow. Yep, she's broke and now working at the local bakery.
Ethan is running for the Senate. It was his father's dream for him to get into politics and after his father dies, Ethan is determined to fulfill that dream. When he meets Skye, his attraction to her is off the charts and they have one incredible night together. That was to be the end of it. Except he couldn't stop thinking about her even though she didn't exactly fit the description of a politician's wife and disagreed with him on just about every issue imaginable. Then he discovers she's pregnant and the baby is his. Life as he knew it was about to change.
I really liked the differences between Ethan and Skye. They were on opposite ends of the spectrum when it came to their political views. Where Ethan was a man of style and class, Skye was more at home dressing up as a Sugar Plum fairy to entertain a group of kids. Skye had a blog under the name Envirochick where she wasn't afraid to challenge Ethan every chance she got but surprised him by attending one of his debates and speaking out on his behalf when his opponent tried to use her to make Ethan look bad. They were an odd couple but they just clicked when Ethan' s career choice wasn't getting in the way. She was also willing to sacrifice her own happiness to help Ethan succeed.
I also enjoyed the secondary characters in this one. Skye' s friends, Ethan' s campaign manager who would like nothing better than to have a relationship with Ethan herself, his mother who was somewhat of a snob and felt like Skye wasn't good enough for her son, and Skye' s father with whom she'd never been particularly close, not until the end. This was a thoroughly entertaining read and one I would have no trouble recommending.
I've fallen in love with Christmas, Colorado Debbie Mason. Skylar Davis and I have a few things in common so it was really easy to relate her.
This story reminds me how important my friends are, that things aren't always what they seem and that a good loving parent does what they feel is in the best interest of their child.
From the start you can feel the attraction Skye and the hunky mayor Ethan feel for each other. With each day normal life issues happy, humorous and scandalous events pull them Skye and Ethan apart but LOVE of the heart wins out.
Let Christmas, Colorado start your holiday season off right!
One of the best romance Xmas books I’ve read in a long time. Character development, plot, great writer. No wham bam boy meets girl, obstacle and then love blossoms. This plotting was unique and believable. Going to look for more of her books
4.5 Stars Again with this series I'm torn. There is SO much I love about the characters and the storyline but the fact that the men of Christmas seem to have a real problem sticking up for their women in public is really starting to bother me. At least Ethan put up a decent fight for Skye when people bad mouthed her. Sometimes he didn't fight hard enough and he seemed to easily put everyone else's happiness ahead of his own and Skye's. Much like the other guys he didn't have a problem offending or embarrassing the woman he loved in front of people but wouldn't say anything about anyone else because he didn't want to hurt their feelings. It's seriously a pattern in this series that seems to be getting better with each book but still grinds my gears. Don't let that rant fool you though because I've already went back and reread 1/3 of this story because I couldn't stop thinking about it. There is something to be said about a book that stirs up such strong emotion that you want to tell everyone about it and can't help but keep going back for more.
I enjoyed this book and really wanted to know how the story ended. I did have a very hard time connecting with the heroine. She seemed flighty and selfish and how could she not be showing at 18 weeks? Still, the author did a good job of keeping me engaged and rooting for the hero and heroine to work it out. And I must say that Betty Jean is the best character I've read in a long time! I'll look for more stories from Christmas, Colorado.
Loved it! These Christmas, CO stories keep getting better and better! This is Skylar and Ethan's story and it's a wild ride for these two. The ultra conservative senate bound Ethan and the tree hugging vegan Skylar are definitely an odd couple but one that works beautifully. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves sweet small town romances.
Oh, what a wonderful town! This isn't just a book, it is a community and I love it. There is a bit of mystery in the great romance that just adds to the flavor and to the unexpect element of the story. Meeting these people made me want to know everyone better.
As my very wise and wonderful friend warned me beforehand, the protagonist in this book is pretty annoying and self serving throughout. Just okay in the end (but not terrible).
I love Debbie Mason's writing, she's like Elle Kennedy and Penelope Douglas for me personally. I just easily fly through the pages of her books. I just anticipate what would happen next and I couldn't put the book down.
But after reading three books in this series back to back. I've sensed a pattern and I gotta say I'm tad disappointed.
The sub-plot where there's always a second woman pining after the hero is honestly, exhausting. That's the only word I can think of that encompasses every frustration I have regarding this sub plot. It's cheap and a cop out tbh.
A woman going after another woman's man? Why? WHY? This happened during the first book Gage and Maddie's story (Sheena, ex wife who wants her husband back). Second book, Grace and Jack's story (Maria, Jack's almost fling who can't let him go). This book, Skye and Ethan's story (Claudia, Ethan's campaign manager and the bane of Skye's teenage years). I have a feeling the fourth book won't be different seeing as how Chance hasn't gotten over his dead wife yet.
Also the plot where they take one step forward and two steps back because of a simple miscommunication. Can we not? Please? Jack and Grace did this several fucking times. Skye and Ethan, no different. I just find it extremely difficult to believe in these stories now, how could they stay with a person and tell them they love them without any communication and keeps on jumping on their own conclusions without talking their problems out? How?
I will continue to read the fourth book because I've been waiting for Chance and Vivi's story, after that I'm gonna have to think about moving forward with this series.
Not sure how I feel about this book. I didn't like the total lack of respect shown to Skye. Especially by Ethan. I spent at least half of the book wanting to slap him, and everyone who put her down and held everything against and blamed her for! And his self righteous, controlling behaviour disgusts me. And she was ALWAYS the only one in the wrong according to everyone else. The always assumed and accused her of the worst, without checking her side or her reasons. They just blamed and put her down. And often, her reasons were validated and understandable. They completely disrespected her values and beliefs, for standing up for the less fortunate people, animals and the environment. And not once, did anyone apologize or see her side. It was always about them, how it affected them or made them look, even when she was right. In fact, the only person I didn't want to smack in the head was Vivi and Gage! Everyone else just did what they wanted, regardless of how it made her feel, disrespecting her and doing whatever THEY wanted. In the end, they were all better off with the outcomes of her decisions. And at least she acknowledged her mistakes and grew from them. My only frustration with Skye was how easily she gave into them and some moments, I didn't agree with her reactions. I hope the other books in the series are less annoying. Somewhere between 3.5 and 4. Storyline was interesting, but the people were aggravating. I wish someone would have slapped the twit Claudia. Bleh! Plus side, Skye's step mom is awesome and her dad really redeemed himself!

If you haven't read the books before this in the series, I recommend that you do. It's much more fun to follow the stories as they progress from one couple to the next. In this book, you get the coupling of Skylar and Ethan. They are similar in that they were both raised in political homes and know their way around political mumbo jumbo but where Ethan is a die hard republican running for a senate seat, Sky is free loving liberal vegan who wants nothing to do with him or his politics. Oh they do have a few more things in common. That one night they spent together, the attraction they are both fighting, and just one more little tiny thing... This is their story. There are complications throughout, angst aplenty, and more than a few surprises. When you get to the last few chapters you even get a little bit of Christmas holiday cheer. I don't want to tell you what happens in the story because it's so much fun turning that first page and joining the whole gang to the very end without knowing exactly what you are in for. You usually have a pretty good idea about how these things end but it's a real trip getting there. I enjoyed this installment in the series and am just about to start the next one, 'Wedding Bells in Christmas'. If you haven't started the series, I recommend it!
Christmas in romance books is a time when anything is possible—lonely reserved virgins can be swept off their feet by Prince Charming, an unexpected pregnancy can be the catalyst that nudges a casual relationship into a courtship, and estranged friends and former-lovers can get a second chance at love. Perhaps you’ve heard of the “Keep Christmas in December” campaign? That campaign doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of catching on in Romlandia. Escaping into the pages of a Christmas-themed book is a pleasure that can be—and is—enjoyed by many readers year-round.
It Happened at Christmas upends a few tropes that are not always successful in their execution: the one-off encounter that culminates in a surprise pregnancy and the really really opposites attract. Meet a fey, vegetarian heroine and her conservative, politician baby-daddy. Since pregnancies take more than a few months to gestate and bloom, a more accurate title might be It Happened in Christmas, the charming town where Skylar Davis and Ethan O’Connor live.
This is the 3rd book of the series and you get to know more of the characters in this series. This book focuses on Skylar and Ethan. Skylar came to Christmas because she is broke after losing all her inheritance. But she doesn't tell her best friend Madison. Ethan is running for Colorado State Senate and doesn't need the drama in his life that Skylar creates. His mom does not like her and wants him eot settle down with his campaign manager. Skylar is a vegan and against so much of what Ethan is for. But after a one night stand, neither one can get the other out of their heads and it could hurt his career. As we read on we find out more and more about these characters and how they are involved with others from the town and their pasts. I am enjoying this series so much and am continuing on with it. I received this from #Forever for a review.
This was a good Christmas book!! I am a sucker for Christmas stories (no idea why) and this was one that I had looked at and left on my TBR shelf a few times, but I finally picked it up and I am glad that I did! I really liked the characters, the setting (Christmas, Colorado) and the plot of the story. The author made an epic reference to herself as an author, but in her book, between the characters! It was my favorite part of the whole story!
The author did an amazing job with not making the story 100% predictable, but giving the reader just enough to throw them off. I enjoyed the pace of the story, the plot twists and the end of the book, where we are offered a bonus story. A great book to add to your Christmas book TBR - but move it to the top of the pile, it's worth it!
Really enjoyed getting to know Skye and Ethan two complete opposites who find their selves falling in love. Was worried that Claudia and Ethan's Mom was going to keep them apart but they finally figured out a way to be together. I think I would have scratched Claudia's eyes out several times.
Dr. Charlotte Bailey finds her husband in conference room having sex with board member and she ends up getting exiled to Christmas,Colorado as CEo of hospital there. She finds herself attracted to Dr. matt Trainer but tries to deny it. After her ex gets her Dad voted off board and tells her she has to stay in Christmas to close hospital she finds a way to fight it and in the end, a miracle (named Nick Clause) showes them a way to save it. Look forward to more from this town.
I think maybe this series is just okay. Like, I like the characters okay. Mostly it's pretty cute. But maybe there is just a bit too much going on all the time. Not enough downtime? I guess I like having a little bit of time with the wooing before the drama hits.
And where was Jill??? If Skye was working with Grace, we definitely should have had some Jill mentioned.
This is the third book In The Christmas Colorado series and I have to say I really like this one We are returning to Christmas, Colorado where Skylar Davis is out of money, out of options and finding comfort with friends. Ethan O'Connor Likes his life drama-free and predictable when Skylar comes back to town, he's never been able to forget their time together. Skylar is exactly the distraction he can't afford right now Ethan running for state senate and Skyler finds out she's pregnant with a quick marriage and ow drama . An amazing Ray of characters snow is in the air the magic of the season will it bring them all together @DebbieMason
Perfect example of reading a book out of series order is fine! AND WHAT A GREAT ONE TO PICK being that in crave the accidental pregnancy troupe probably more than any other person on this planet ! I could write all night about all the hilarious and brilliant comments or accidental one liners that has me rolling in this story about Sky and her pregnant state! I commend Debbie on making me really not like Liz because of how she treated Sky as a person . I SO LOVED the chemistry between alpha sexy Ethan ! Fantastic book!! I need to follow through on this series sequence also !
Sometimes secrets are good but sometimes they are bad especially when Skylar Davis informed her best friend that she was pregnant and didn’t want Ethan O’Connor to know. Skylar knew she had made a mistake revealing her secret because once Ethan knew, he wanted to take charge even though he was running for State Senator. She knew this would be the end of his career and she really did love him no matter what his mother or his campaign manager thought. This was a fun and loving story of too many people being involved in this relationship.
