The Devil You Know #1

My Boss is the Devil

Rate this book
What’s better than being a college dropout twenty-something working as a barista in New Haven, CT? Just about anything.

Nick would give anything to escape the dead-end life he’s made for himself. He gets the offer of a lifetime from Lucifer himself, to trade his apron for a suit. Should he really consider becoming an agent of the Devil? With the way things are going for Nick, of course he should.

Lucifer wants to give Nick a chance to do what he always wanted, to help people, wielding power and influence to make their dreams come true. He would have to sell his soul, but the Devil is a gambling man and lets Nick experience his new life before he has to sign on the dotted line. Can he use the Devil’s power for good, and make his mark on the world, or will he fall victim to his own desires and lose his humanity?

As if that wasn’t enough, the very friend that made the meeting with Lucifer possible turns on Nick, and he needs to do some quick thinking to come out on top. Maybe the ends justify the means, but there are no easy answers.

Finding the balance between good and evil is about to require a lot of coffee.

Ben Schenkman

Ben Schenkman likes many things in life: his 20-pound Maine coon cat, his family, his coffee, and his eclectic hobbies—not necessarily in that order.

Ben also likes to play devil’s advocate in his urban fantasy books by exploring the gray areas of good and evil with questions like, “Does the end really justify the means? Or is it all simply black and white?” Ben leaves these questions lingering in the ether to challenge readers’ conventional thinking and delve into the complexities of moral dilemmas.

As a native of Connecticut, Ben draws inspiration from his upbringing and college years in New Haven, where his novels take place. When he wants to escape being a writer, he’s a massive foodie who goes on gastronomic adventures, an overachiever who collects degrees in Theater, Nuclear Engineering, and an MBA, or the manager/performer of the fire dance troupe, HVBRIS—you know, the basics. No big deal.

Want to know more about his work, or talk about coffee and cats? He loves hearing from readers!

My Boss the Devil

I really enjoyed this quirky book about a guy who accepted a trial offer to work for THE Devil. It's a clever and unique book with interesting characters, fun plot, and heartwarming moments, along with plenty of humor. Loved it.

A cozy/low fantasy/humorous mortality tale? Sounds weird but it 100% works. First a big shoutout to the author for a review copy of his audiobook which I highly recommend. Ben does a fantastic job with the voice acting and Lu's voice is so spot on, it made me laugh just hearing it.

Like so many contemporary fantasies this all starts in a coffee shop-like they all should. Nick is your every man, stuck in an endless cycle of just surviving but not really living, not sure where he wants to go with his life. But a chance encounter with Lucifer gives him the opportunity to create the life he has longed for.

While this story has themes of morality, questioning what is good and evil, is a bad deed for a good cause worth it, the cozy elements help to balance that out, and I enjoyed Nick's chats and relationship with Amy grow. Along with the humor, it keeps the story from getting to serious or turning too dark when dealing with the harsh realities of the real world.

Thanks to NetGalley and the Editor. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

I think that this book could be the urban fantasy variant of the cozy fantasy book. Or something really in the neighborhood. It is a slice-of-life urban fantasy, where our MC, Nick, meets the Devil and things start happening. But these things happening are big for him, because his whole life change, obviously, but are definitely low stakes. And the vibes of the whole book are pretty chill so… yeah, I think that this summarises the book pretty well: chill vibes, low stakes, slice-of-life. And I think that all those make this book the perfect choice for a Summer read, when you want something not demanding, fun, and pretty fast to read.

Nick is a great MC, but his main selling point is that he is a normal person. Mind me, he is also the most decent guy out there. He is a really good person (and I really love to see more of his mindset with women, and people in general, around. We need more of Nick around, in real life especially!), he is nice, kind, caring, all of these things. But he is the most normal person you can find. He is not so happy with his job, he is a barista and he enjoys making coffee but he is not so happy to have to deal with people (and I felt so seen here!!), he is okay with his life in general, he is not so sad or discontent about it but he is not happy, either. He is in a kind of limbo, where he survives, he is not feeling so bad about his life, but not so good.
And he keeps floating around until he meets Lu.
And Lu is another great character! It reminded me a bit of Tom Ellis’ Lucifer (and I love this version, I really really love it!), he is who he is, he doesn’t make excuses and I really liked him for this.
And let’s not forget Odin! You need to meet this big cat!

All in all, this is a fast reading. It is short and even if it is not technically fast-paced, it is not slow. The writing is smooth and the story carries you through to the end, without a single boring moment. It is a well-balanced book, relaxing in some parts (even if we have some not relaxing things happening, and even if we are in the constant company of Nick’s doubts. Because he takes things seriously, and he thinks a lot about consequences and all, and this is a thing that I appreciate. I won’t say that Nick is an overthinker, but we are almost there), but not boring. I had a good time with it, and I seriously think it is a good choice if you want to take a break!

"After my meeting... I could barely sleep and, in the morning, decided that I was probably developing an ulcer based on the way my coffee hit my stomach. That or I was becoming a hypochondriac. Maybe I was a hypochondriac with an ulcer. Did I mention that I hadn't slept well?"

Really liked this one! I needed something light after too much lit fic, and despite the "darkness" coloring these pages, this was quite a light read! I tore through it, always excited to see what was coming next.

The writing didn't always seem to flow to me (sometimes I'd get confused by a phrasing), but overall the writing was great. I really appreciate that Schenkman often took the time to describe people's outfits. It really helps with imagining a character, and is fun for a fashionista like myself xD Makes you notice how a lot of other authors don't bother to describe outfits.

The plot was really good, I liked the characters, and I liked . Super excited to read the next one, and thank you to the author for signing our copy! :D This wasn't my first time reading a self-published book, but the other self-published stuff I've read has been poetry. Really glad I got this one. If you're looking for a sign to invest in indie authors, this is it. I'll just be here waiting patiently until the movie version of this comes out 😁 because this needs a movie deal.

It's also been a while since I've gotten a book new, and wow. The feel of the pages is amazing. Love the font and the heading pictures in each chapter. This feels very well-produced, and what a fun cover!

Congrats to the author on the comedy award this received, well-deserved.

I was looking for something different to listen to when the author reached out to me, and I accepted a review copy of My Boss is the Devil. I was a little nervous about an audio narrated by the author, but it turns out Ben has a theater degree and the audiobook was well done.

Our story begins when we meet Nick, a twenty-something college dropout working as a barista in New Haven, CT. He enjoys the job even as he dreams of better things. He and his ornery cat, Odin, live alone. He likes a girl but has been too shy to make a move. Instead, he hangs out with her and a group of friends who believe themselves to be Satanist. Nick doesn’t, but he has fun mixing drinks for the group.

When the group plans to perform a ritual in the local cemetery, Nick comes along to make a traditional Absinthe drink with a spoon he has been dying to use. The night doesn’t go at all as planned and Nick ends up gets the offer of a lifetime from Lucifer. But everyone knows a deal with the devil is never a good idea. Right?

The tale that unfolds pulled me in as Lucifer presented his offer, complete with a probationary period where he got to try out his new job and life. Nick goes to the office and things aren’t as he expected, but he also doesn’t trust Luc. Nick wants to help people, he tries to do that even in this role. From the ticking clock on the wall to those angered that he got a deal, the suspense built even as Nick’s life improved, as did his romantic relationship.

The plot development was excellent and kept me engaged in the building danger and Nick’s upcoming decision. Will he accept Lucifer’s offer? Nick himself is funny but morally grounded. He is smart, awkward and overall a likeable character. Lucifer is a smooth salesman. Slick is a word I would use to describe him. The others in the office added interest, and Nick’s girlfriend made a great sounding board for his concerns.

I am curious to see where the trilogy takes us and look forward to the next audiobook. As I stated, the author has a theater background and did a good job with the narration. Sometimes Lucifer and Nick sounded similar, but the rest of the cast had distinct voices.

I’ve seen a number of reimaginings if the “Deal with the Devil” genre in recent years, and Ben Schenkman’s debut novel is one of the more enjoyable ones.
The protagonist, Nick, is a familiar sort of fellow. He’s smart and hard-working, but finds himself stuck in a rut, with an OK job and OK life but no visible path to doing more with himself. He’d like to do some good in the world, but he doesn’t have the influence or resources, so he just treads water.
Then a well-dressed stranger makes him an offer and things get very interesting very quickly.

The author does a great job of avoiding some of most overdone cliches of this sort of story. There are no fiddle contests and a refreshing lack of brimstone. It’s more about how having the power to make change, even altruistic change, requires compromise, and the question of whether it’s worth it.

“My Boss is the Devil” is a quick read and solidly written. If I were to get nitpicky were a few passages of slightly clunky exposition as the author set the scene, but those were minor flaws and overall I enjoyed that the story had a sense of being set in a particular place rather than being set in “generic town.”

It was clear from the ending that there’s more to come for Nick and some of his new acquaintances, and I look forward to checking out the second book in the series.

(Disclaimer: I was provided a review copy of “My Boss is the Devil” by the author)

I find it fascinating how religion can interweave itself into fiction and stories, and this first venture into the "Devil You Know" series is no exception. Not only is Ben exceptional at writing his characters, he manages to create a story which leaves you wanting to know more at the end. Although, while I do have a few minor gripes with the plot and its execution, this was still a fantastic read!

I met the author and bought 3 books of the series because I liked his personality and enjoyed talking with him. I also appreciated that he took the time and wrote dedication in each book. After about a month I finally finished reading the first book. It was easy read, but I just couldn’t get into the story. I like Lu Nick and Amy but wasn’t invested in what happened to them.
My favorite quote is from nick talk with Walt:
“'So you say it’s a test, this freebie I’m trying to give away?'
'Isn’t everything?'”

A fun light hearted read with great characters.

Loved this book with great characters. Nick is one of the good guys I loved how even though he is practically on minimum wage as a barista he still manages to find a few coins for the homeless.

This book had me smiling from ear to ear. I could really picture the Devil known fondly as Lu (Lucifer) like some modern-day corporate guy looking out for his team in a modern office block with the most intelligent and loyal employees. Nothing in the least macabre. Worth checking out, I'm off to read Book two.

I really enjoyed this book

Very much enjoyed reading this book. It was different, the characters well defined, a great world building, and terrific plot. It was nothing like I thought it would be. Surprising storyline with small subplots. The theological discussions between Nick and The Devil - Luc - are interesting and add to the strength of the plot, but do not overwhelm the story.
The humor is fantastic!
I’m off to read the next in the series. Highly recommended

I loved this book. Nick and Lu's back and forth banter had me laughing and giggling. This is a deal with the devil story with a twist. Nick is to be the devils assistant. It was such a fun story to read. I will be starting book 2 soon.

I enjoyed reading this. Reading about a single, twenties guy trying to figure out where he belongs in the world and what the world around him is doing, it was very good. And trying to figure out if the devil had his best intentions at heart. Just a lot of fun.

Very good book. Very silly, i love the narrative story telling. Felt very much like a sitcom. The ideas and concepts of lucifer and hell and heaven were very interesting. Very long book for what it was though. there was a lot of world building, but i was very into it ngl

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a lot of fun and I'm already invested in the series. For a book that's under 300 pages, it packs a lot in without feeling heavy.

Nick is a highly relatable character and his inner dialogue made me laugh out loud at a few different points. It also kept the pacing going and I didn't feel like I was missing anything that was skipped over - in fact, I enjoyed the fact that the story stayed focused on action and Nick's character development.

I really enjoyed the different ideas of the devil that are explored and even more so the fact that Lu was really likeable.

This book was a fun and quick read that delivered good characters and a really interesting story. I'm glad there are two more books and I'll definitely be reading them.

I get the idea that Ben Schenkman was a philosophy major in college. This book is all about the nature of Good versus Evil, do the ends justify the means used to achieve them, or can a "good person" work for the Devil.
Nick is stuck in a life of mere existence working paycheck to paycheck as a barista with no real goals and no way to get out of his current situation. He is out in a cemetery at midnight while some friends of his try to summon the devil. He doesn't believe in that sort of stuff but is there for the free absinthe. During the ritual, he wanders the graveyard alone until he is approached by Lu. Lu, short for Lucifer, has an offer for Nick; Lu will provide the means for Nick to do good things in exchange for Nick taking care of "projects" for Lu. Oh, and he can back out of the offer and go back to his plain boring life for a limited time.
After a couple months of training at all sorts of business skills, for his first project, Nick is to help a man who won the lottery and wants to set up a tuition free school for kids in bad situations. And, to help a boy who might be being abused at home. How he verifies the problem and solves it is up to Nick. (See, the moral struggle I mentioned before.)
Of course there is parts of his old life that still intrude in his new life. Things like the satanists he went to the cemetery with and a slowly developing romance, maybe.
This was a good book that got a little too philosophical at times. I understood the concept without having it brought up so often.

I thoroughly enjoyed My Boss is the Devil by Ben Schenkman. One of the standout aspects of this audiobook is that it’s narrated by the author himself. This added a layer of authenticity to the storytelling because you get to hear the characters exactly as he intended them to be portrayed. The tone and inflections truly align with the narrative, making it an immersive experience.

From the very first chapter, I was hooked. One of the opening lines, where the author reflects on not believing in God but believing in something, deeply resonated with me on a personal level. It set the tone for the rest of the book, and I knew I was in for something special.

The story itself is incredibly fun and easy-going. While there are some twists and turns to keep things interesting, it remains a light, engaging listen. I especially loved the humor surrounding Lucifer and his interactions with the other characters—it added a delightful charm to the narrative.

This audiobook has definitely made me a fan of Ben Schenkman. I’m now eagerly following him for updates on any new audiobooks he’s releasing. I’ve even considered diving straight into the rest of the series because I can’t wait to see how the relationships evolve and where the story goes next.

If you’re looking for something entertaining, with a touch of humor and a unique take on Lucifer, I can’t recommend My Boss is the Devil enough. It’s a fantastic read (or listen), and I’m sure others will enjoy it just as much as I did!

Thank you Indie fantasy Bookwrm Tracker, and Ben Schenkman for sending me this advanced review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The author has a prequel short story available, and I highly recommend you read it first. It made reading this book even better.

This is really fun, and different.

I love how Nick can roll with anything that gets thrown at him. He is so chill, and his sense of humor is top notch. Life keeps punching him, and every time he tries to make the best of it and just wants to be a good person. I really enjoyed how much he has to think things through before making a choice. It felt real, and I know that kind of anxiety myself.

Lu was also great. His intense, but quirky personality won me over fast. I really love that Lucifer isn't evil in this world, reminds me a tiny bit of the Lucifer TV show.

The light romance with Amy was also a nice touch, and I can't wait to see where this goes in the next two books.

I absolutely adore the big floofy kitty Odin. Nick loves him so much, and he is smart enough to know that you can't make a cat do anything it doesn't want to.

The little bits of snark and sarcasm had me laughing, and there are tons of great quotable moments too. The pacing is spectacular. Even though it wasn't crazy fast, it still was hard to put down. It was a really relaxing fun read.

Clever and Humorous

I dived into this book without checking what it was about expecting a romance. Promptly got confused when his boss was a man but stayed open minding. Then when he and friends actually summon Lucy himself…well then I read the synopsis.

The plot is solid. The characters are well described. Nick is unsure of himself in the very ways most of us are. Is he doing what he wants? What does he want? Does he want it enough to do anything about it?

Enter Lucy. He is willing to help Nick get what he wants for the small price of his soul. Luckily, there is a grace period. The philosophical discussions and gobs of humor make this a fun read with some thought provoking questions.

Solid 4/5. Will look for the next book.

Gonna have a much longer review on my YT but for now this was SO FUN. Exactly the type of book I like with humor, fantasy, a little hint of romance, and the great questions of morality. This was very well crafted and I'll even excuse the 1 incident of letting out a breath they didn't know they were holding because it was "let out a breath I didn't recall I was holding". Thank you for at least adjusting it and it worked in the context of the scene. Nick is a great MC, very much living the type of life many of us are facing, wanting to do more but unable to do so and when faced with the dilemma of work for the devil but maybe also do some good, well, I'd probably take that one too. I just really loved this and I'm so excited to delve into book 2.

Ben Schenkman's 'My Boss is the Devil' is deliciously sanguine. It is equally dark comedy and ethically complex. You will find yourself urging Nick to choose wisely at each opportunity and may even discover that his choices may be similar to your own, given identical circumstances. While not normally a style or subject matter this reviewer is normally drawn to, I am genuinely pleased that I happened across this book. The author plays with the reader's understanding of the dark lord and creates a wholly believable, and dare I say - almost likable prince of darkness.

You are in for a fun romp that is difficult to set down.

This book is somehow cozy (I think it’s all the coffee and of course, Odin), hilarious, mysterious, and fun all in one!

Think Suits, but with the Devil and altruism.

Lu is precisely everything I want in the Devil himself. Nick’s journey through navigating whether the ends justify the means is something many of us struggle with when trying to be good people. This story was well written and charming, but also contemplative and forced this reader into introspection.

Can’t wait for the next one!

I had had my eye on this for a while, and I snagged a copy. I finally read it, not really sure what to expect, and I quite enjoyed the experience. With the ending, I have to say, I’m still not sure where Nick has ended up. But what I am sure of is that this is a thought-provoking read, with some interesting philosophical ideas. I usually like much more action in my books and a mystery to solve, but this definitely kept my attention the whole time. Give this well-written, fascinating, unique book a try. Highly recommend.

I can’t believe how much I looooved this book! I bought it on a whim in a kindle books sale and boy am I glad I did!

It’s so quirky and a really unique take on the ‘deal with the devil’ trope. I really liked how, although it was funny, it also made you really think - there were some deep philosophical concepts in all the wackiness!

I enjoyed Nick as a protagonist too; he’s smart in an understated way and I liked how realistic he felt in his need to do good but was overwhelmed in to inaction by all the things that need fixing in the world. And Amy… sweet, cute Amy! I wish she was real so she could be my best friend!

Needless to say I’m so excited to read the next book in the series!

This was such a fun read! The characters were relatable and the writing was clever. I laughed out loud several times, and I had a hard time putting it down when the action really picked up. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

A couple of favorite quotes with no spoilers:

"My job was to sell coffee to people who thought it was cool to order by using any many words as possible."

"I was a whirlwind of thought sitting in a cheap swivel chair."

"'Whoa!' Lester waved his hands in the air. 'You keep that macho bullshit to yourself, we're professionals here.'"
