HIT: The world's deadliest assassin just met her match... Before special operative Chandler was forced to FLEE, she executed the most difficult missions--and most dangerous people--for the government. So when she's ordered to eliminate a crooked corporate CEO in a manner that looks like natural death, it's a regular day at the office... until she discovers she's not the only assassin hunting this particular prey, and her competition is aiming to make this hit into a political statement that will shake the nation.
EXPOSED: Death is in her blood. Before special operative Chandler was forced to FLEE, she executed the most difficult missions - and most dangerous people - for the government. So when she's tasked with saving a VIP's daughter from human traffickers, Chandler expects the operation to be by the numbers...until she uncovers a secret that will endanger the entire population of New York City, and possibly the world.
NAUGHTY: You have nothing to fear but fear itself. And her. Before special operative Hammett became a mercenary, she executed the most difficult missions--and most dangerous people--for the government. When one sanction turns into half a dozen dead, the agency Hammett works for realizes she's gone rogue. And there's only one way to deal with rogues; eliminate them with extreme prejudice. But this target has other ideas...
HIT, EXPOSED, and NAUGHTY combine for a total of over 100,000 words or roughly 400 pages.
Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Shot of Tequila, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Dead On My Feet, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Shaken, Stirred (with Blake Crouch), Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, Chaser, Old Fashioned, Bite Force, and Witch Brew. More coming soon.
Wow, that's a lot of Jack.
If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.
Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.
He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.
With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.
And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.
Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.
I am never disappointed by this author. This series made me shirk my work duties and secretly read because I had to know what happened next. Each one builds on the one before it and by the end of the third, I had it all figured out....except I didn’t. Now I have to read the next set and see how it ends.
Absolutely the WORST book I've ever read. I hope I don't have to give this any stars because it's truly awful. I found myself reading it to it's conclusion in disbelief like watching a train wreck. I couldn't believe something could be so horribly written. It's hard to remember that Chandler is actually supposed to be one of the "good guys" in this series. I realize she's supposed to be an assassin but there truly seems to be no redeeming qualities to the character. It doesn't help that the writing of this series is so shallow it's laughable.
The fight scenes are reminiscent of a bad Quinton Tarantino blood bath ripoff with references to the fighting styles being used by the characters like a string of bad name dropping. Add to that that the characters seem to be horny beyond belief. Formulaic to an embarrassing fault, you can pretty much guarantee that once the main character kills her mark, she'll be screwing someone within two pages (and those exploits are described embarrassingly explicit to the point of hard core porn. I literally had to skim the last story to get past the FIFTY PAGES - yes I counted- of the characters boffing each other. No, I didn't read it. I just kept skimming until I stopped encountering trashy sexual words on the page.)
If these stories were meant to be a black comedy, it might be considered redeemable on some level. Unfortunately, I think these two authors were quite serious about trying to make this some kind of bad ass adventure. Mores the pity. I'm sorry to say that I will never get the week back in my life I wasted on this book but at least I gained a valuable lesson. Never again will I continue reading something so terrible. I'll chuck it a move on.
The only proper way to rate this book is to rate it as a whole and then each part separately. Overall, I'd give it three stars. It's obviously building to something major, which is hinted upon during the epilogue of Naughty, but at the same time each story can be read as a separate standalone piece. There are no real cliffhangers, so to speak. But my main issue with this "Chandler Collection" is the lack of Chandler in Naughty.
Exposed was a fast-paced thrill ride with some crazy stuff, but if you're willing to stretch the imagination just a tad, it all seemed plausible. I'd give it 4 stars.
Hit was another action-packed adventure. It seemed there was more Chandler and understanding Chandler. I enjoyed the character aspect more in Hit, but the premise was much more unbelievable. Granted, I read for entertainment, so I went along with the ride, happy to blindly agree with the facts presented. However, after completing the story, I began to question whether or not the characters would have been infected due to physical contact and sweat (since tears were an issue). But still, it was a good story, a great inside look at Chandler's emotional side. I'd say this was 4.5 stars on that aspect alone.
Naughty. It started out exciting. Immediate action. But as I kept reading, I began to wonder, where's Chandler. And the action continued. Basically the entire story was nonstop action. Action, sex, action, action while sex is going on in the background. You get the point. It was fun and crazy and left my head spinning, but the storyline needed further development and rational. By the end, there was only a brief mention of Chandler (literally two lines). And the running from one fight scene to another left my head spinning (and not in a good way). I'd give this one 2 stars...
Which leads to my overall 3 star rating. Naughty was a disappointment, but since I intend to continue the Chandler saga with FLEE, I muddled through.
These were three pretty intense secret agent short stories. They were different than what I'm used to from Konrath, but still good. A little more sex than I care for, but it didn't take away from the story.
I really enjoyed Hit , Exposed , and Naughty ! I will definitely be reading more by this author and adding to my follow list. On my way to download the next 3 books in the series ! Happy reading Everyone!
