If I were to be specific with you about what this story is about, I’d probably get in trouble with the higher ups. So, please allow me to be vague…
Felicity Stiff was not expecting her agent to send her a salacious gift as inspiration for her research project. What she gets is something much more than the stimulating package that comes in the mail.
When she unwittingly releases a 14th century player named Lord Richard, she must learn to let down her walls and receive, while he must prove he knows how to give.
The curse might be broken, but can he prove himself to be Richard and not Dick.
This short 20k word inanimate object shifter romance is packed with funny historical facts, ridiculous euphemisms, and feminist rage. It’s perfect for readers who loved Unhinged by Vera Valentine and Stuffed by Sylvia Morrow.
Yes, I did just read a book about a d*ldo coming to life, but this inanimate object romance was so fun and unique that I don't care! We have Richard, a 13th-century man whore/lord who cares little about the women he beds and their pleasure. When his selfish ways come back to haunt him and he is cursed by one of the women to live his life out as an object for pleasure; Richard finds himself stuck for 7 centuries, passed around by a plethora of people wanting to use him. However, when he ends up in the hands of Felicity, a historian writing a book about the history of women's pleasure and toys; Richard comes back to life and is determined to stay around and make up for lost time.
Look, somehow these books just keep falling into my lap! I don't go out searching for them, they find me.... Stiff was such a fun read, it is absolutely full of sex and hilarity. I loved how Richard learned from his ways and got on track with the joy of mutual pleasure, the man was a complete ass in the beginning and by the end, he was so sweet and charming. I also enjoyed all the little historical facts that are laced through this story, they added a nice layer of reality to the completely unhinged happenings of the plot; and when I say plot I mean that very loosely because the plot is sex😌
My entire love of romance comes from a fascination with how women actualize their fantasies through fiction. (Actually it comes from secreting Lisa Kleypas books in high school, but that's not important right now). My hypothesis is that historically men have discredited the genre and tuned it out, thereby allowing it to be an insular space for women to acknowledge and indulge their romantic and sexual fantasies.
And, especially lately, I am seeing so many books in which authors are wholeheartedly embracing their WILDEST fantasies and I am living for it.
The premise of Stiff is that an extremely selfish and insensitive man, after a lifetime of objectifying women, is cursed to be a literal object used by women. And not only does he ultimately recognize the error of his ways, but he becomes a feminist and learns how to truly care about someone other than himself?? That is peak fantasy. These are the books I exist for.
This book is not just about sex, it's about recognizing and redressing the double-standards and inconsideration that women have faced throughout history (on all stages). The fmc is a historian researching the history of women's rights, including the pleasure gap (which is where sex toys come in). And there is actually a decent amount of information about the history of sex toys, not to mention absolutely ridiculous euphemisms for sex. How accurate is this information? 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ Not the point. But it is really entertaining.
In a nutshell: This book hilarious. It's meta. There are bookstagrammers recommending monster smut in it. I endorse.
4/5⭐️ (honestly might change to 5⭐️ bc iconic) ✅ Entertaining ✅ Creative ✅ I liked it (even using my old scale, it *does* have *educational value*) ✅ Innovative ❌ Diverse representation
And in case you're wondering, 5/5🌶️ (more smut than plot).
Note: Some of my goodreads shelves can be spoilers
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Are you judging me? Well I almost cried at the ending so I HAD to give 5 stars!) Readability: 📖📖📖📖 Feels: 🦋🦋🦋🦋 Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔 Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡ (The sex is very fast so not much tension build up) Romance: 💞💞💞💞 Sensuality: 💋💋💋💋 Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑🍑 (There’s a variety of scenes and some kind of blend together...most of the book is sex) Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 (It was kind of hard to ‘separate’ scenes, but most of the book is steamy) Humor: Yes. I mean he was a dildo for 700 years. Perspective: First person from both the hero and heroine More character focused or plot focused? character (and sex) focused How did the speed of the story feel? medium to fast (it’s pretty sex focused, so kind of hard to gauge) When mains are first on page together: It takes a bit – 13% or chapter 3 Cliffhanger: No, this ends with a happy for now. Epilogue: No Format: read through Kindle Unlimited (Descriptions found at end of my review)
Should I read in order? This is a stand alone romance.
Basic plot: Felicity is writing about sex toys through the ages when she discovers one of her dildos is actually a man
Give this a try if you want: - contemporary/PNR romance - age gap (haaaaa) the hero has been a dildo for like 700+ years - hero lived in Northumbria in 1341 before he was transformed into a dildo - author/historian heroine – she is writing a book about the history of sex toys - curse to overcome - hand crank vibrators - shorter novel – goodreads has it as 103 pages - some light kink elements – specifically brat heroine and sex toy usage, some light praise/degradation - high steam – most of the novel is sex
Ages: - Didn’t see them mentioned but would guess late 20s/early 30s for heroine and same for hero??
First line: We barely make it out of the feast before I press her against the stone wall and yank up her skirts.
My thoughts: Yes! I am back with another inanimate object romance.
In this novel, we have a selfish hero that is only out for his own pleasure. Leaving a trail of unsatisfied quims behind, he eventually meets his match with a witch that curses him for leaving her disappointed. Sentences to being a dildo until someone voluntarily sucks him off, he is stuck in that form until our modern day historian gets experimental with her research sex toys.
I ended up loving this romance! It was just so funny, and steamy, and I loved the turn around for the hero. I adored the ending scene, it’s probably one of my favorite sex scenes I’ve read recently….I mean I almost cried that’s how attached to these characters I was…
The sex toy notes in this well as well as the euphemisms through the years were absolute treasures to read in this novel. It was just super fun!
Euphemisms
Cock/Hero Stats:
Quotes/thoughts: (Any mistakes are my own)
Content warnings: (This should be taken as a minimum because I could have missed some!)
Locations of kisses/intimate scenes: Safe sex: No? I might have missed some birth control talk but he blows it in her Hows the consent? It’s pretty consensual – there’s talk of boundaries though the hero is pretty cocky about sex 28% - 🔥 hero uses hand crank dildo on the heroine, fingering for her, her on top “Now, come for me, darling. My cock is hard enough to snap. I need you to come. Now.”
34% - 🔥 dry humping o for her, followed by oral for her on the table, followed by doggy style with her supported by the table “You’re wrong about me not wanting to do this,” he says. “I want to make you come again, Felicity. For my own sake, yes. But also as a selfish bastard who wants to taste and touch you until you shatter.”
54% - 🔥 hero jerks off on the heroine “Are you sure you don’t want to play?” He asks in a low rumble. “You seemed to enjoy my cock in your mouth when I was a dildo.”
65% - 🔥 fingering for her, toy usage – butt plug on her and vibrator on him, blow job for him with her laying on her back on the bed and him standing “Go sit on the couch like a good boy, and I’ll be out in a few minutes.” “First,” he says, holding the top of the door frame and blocking the way into the bedroom. “I’m not a good boy. And second, I’m not going anywhere without a kiss.”
89% - 🔥 her on top, sex against the wall (some elements of brat/submissive heroine vibes) I tug her shoulders, pulling her so her head falls over the edge of the high bed, neck supported by the mattress while her head hangs free. I tap my cock on her chin. “Open.” She hesitates for a moment, her eyes spark with something like defiance, but she opens her mouth. Interesting. Does my little historian want to be a brat? // “Say it,” I command. “Tell me what you like.” // I stop thrusting, pin her to the wall with my hips, and bring one hand up to cup her jaw, sliding my thumb into her mouth. She sucks on the digit, and I let myself revel in the flare of heat that goes straight up my arm and down to my cock before I tug her jaw down and wrench open her mouth. // My little historian doesn’t want to be a good girl. She wants to be a brat. No, my little historian wants to be bad. I suspected it before, but now I’m certain. If I give her enough, push her enough to get over her awkwardness and insecurities, she’ll scream. I’m sure of it. She’ll scream so pretty for me. She just needs a shove. I tug her hair. “I told you to tell me what you want.” She swallows again, nervous, then bravely pinches her lips between her teeth. Brat. I smile. Perfect little brat. // I grip her hair, pull her face to my crotch, and use the tip of my prick to pry open her lips. “Such a dirty girl, stuffing me between your lips.”

Full break down on what my ratings above mean here: Overall: How I felt about it everything considered! Readability: How ‘readable’ was the book? Did I fly through it? Did I have to tell myself to pick it back up repeatedly? Were any passages confusing? (I will probably score like (1) is literally unreadable due to formatting/typing errors, etc (2) There were lots of errors that made it difficult to read OR It was extremely confusing and I had to reread passages to make sense of it OR I disliked it so much I had to bribe myself to keep reading (3) I didn’t really want to keep reading and would have preferred to abandon the read and start something else OR some minor continuity issues/confusion (4) I liked it fine, maybe a minor error or 2. I was happy to pick it up when I had time. (5) I never wanted to put this down. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it. I hid in the bathroom from my kids to read. I threw inappropriate food at my children for dinner so I could read instead.) Feels: Totally subjective to each person but did the book give me any tingles? Any butterflies? Did it rip my heart out (in a good way?) Emotional depth: How well do I feel I know the characters at the end? How much did I feel their emotions throughout the story? Sexual tension: Again, subjective, but how strong was the wanting and longing to me between the characters? A book might have strong sexual tension without a single touch. Romance: Was there romance? Did romantic things happen? This can be actions/words/thoughts of the characters and again is subjective. Sensuality: This is how the intimate scenes are written. Kisses and sexual scenes – how sensual were they? Were they on the mechanical side? Was there emotional pull tied in? Were the details explicit or flowery? These are subjective but generally (1) too short to get a good judgement (2) not all what I'm looking for - very vague or flowery prose (3) either not explicit enough or not enough emotional pull (too mechanical/physically descriptive without the emotions) (4) what I love in a scene (5) absolute perfection - perfect balance of emotional longing and explicit descriptions Sex Scene Length: How long the bedroom scenes are (generally (1) is 1-3 sentences (2) is a few paragraphs to a page-ish (3) is about average, a few pages (4) more well developed scenes, quite a few pages with descriptions (4) the majority of the book takes place in the bedroom. This is always hard to tell for me on audio! Steam Scale: Generally, each flame is a scene. If scenes are super close together I sometimes combine them. If a scene is super short or so vague I don’t know what’s happening, I don’t count it. There’s some levels of grey but generally the number of flames is how many sex scenes there are (I max out at 5 so I’ll put a + after if there’s more than that)
4✨, 4🌶️ 📖 ~120 pages (on phone screen) 📖 Campy erotica 📖 Historical times MMC x present time FMC 📖 Curse breaking 🌶️ Sex toys
This actually had no right being as good as it was????
It’s silly of course. Absolute unserious and thematically campy fun. But I laughed out loud numerous times and the connection between the main couple was so sweet. Spicy too — this is definitely a short and punchy erotic romp filled with sex toy escapades.
Back in time, our MMC Dick (Robert) gets turned into a dick (ivory dildo) as a curse for his dickish (sexually selfish) behavior by a witch.
In current times, our FMC, a writer and historian, is writing a novel about sex toys through the ages. She comes into intimate contact with the ivory dildo that is Robert, unintentionally breaks his curse temporarily, and helps him end it permanently, through lots and lots of sex, in which she must receive more than she gives. How terrible for her!😏
This was pretty cute, but it doesn't have the sweet, innocent charm of the door erotica imo.
The FMC was well-written (sex historian sounds like an awesome career), but the dude just seems kinda bland? Like your typical bodice ripper knight in shining armor with a six pack who also happens to be a sex god.
Some favorite quotes:
"For who would ever suck off a dildo?"
"I’m not about to confess that I already made a bread dildo using that recipe, but chickened out before trying it. Shoving yeasty bread up my vag just seemed like a bad idea."
'“I enjoy the way you blush when you’re trying to pretend you aren’t eyeing my gospel pipe. Does it make your nethermouth drool when you see my egg white cannon?”'
"I want to give her space, not make her uncomfortable about the fact that I shoved my cock into her when she was a cock ring."
And drumroll for my favorite kink 🥁🥁🥁
'Rolling us over, so she’s on top, I moan. I growl. I curse. I show her what I mean. “Ride me like I’m your dirty secret. Like I’m your history professor and you shouldn’t have come here, but you’re such a naughty girl you couldn’t resist.”'
The trend of inanimate object shifter books is a hoot and all, but this one made instant sense to me and made me eager to read it as something other than a lark. Conceptually, it's just perfect.
The sex was hot, the character growth was well done, particularly in such a short space, and it was a cathartic read.
One of the reasons we love the smut revolution is women have been discouraged from having needs or desires, let alone expressing them. A book where the epitome of the selfish jackass rake gets cursed and has to learn the joys of sharing pleasure to earn back his humanity? Dead on balls accurate.
A 14th century lord is cursed to be an immortal dildo as punishment for only prioritizing his own pleasure and never his partner’s during sex.
The humor maintained this insane couple was honestly very fun and incredibly refreshing. It made me realize that I rarely see genuine comedy and laughter be incorporated into sex scenes and would now like to see more of it in other romcoms!
That man learned his lesson but also loves her so much!!
CW: explicit sexual content, brief moments of dubious consent
I really enjoyed this naughty story. The fact that Richard was curse to be a dild0 was karmic justice. It was nice to watch both he and Felicity grow into a better version of themselves.
Spice: 5/5
Triggers: cheating (off page, not MCs), SA (MMC used in dildo form by witch and then subsequent women)
I love a good educational smutty book! I learned so many neat things while simultaneously being h0rny for a 14th century lord who's a... well dick. This was so fun and spicy and did I mention fun?
Richard was cursed to be a dildo for women's pleasure after denying them their pleasure with his fuckboy ways. Felicity is a historian writing a book about historic sex toys but she's never really used sex toys before, so the whole process was quite enlightening. (Including receiving historic replicas to try out and write her findings) She accidentally releases him from his curse in the funniest way and chaos ensues. And many many 0rgasms. The fun facts between every chapter were one of my favorite things. Absolutely loved this!
Of all the entertaining unhinged little smut books, this is as of now by far my favourite and the first where I went for more than three stars. (Although I believe it deserved another cover)
Like most others of this genre, it was well written, except it felt much more like a story including smut rather than smut including traces of a story. And I liked the story!
Impressive, in my opinion, to squeeze in this extent of character development in such a short book. And I loved that, in addition, it made me laugh. I appreciate that and I believe I will read it again.😂🖤
Decided I wanted to read/review some unhinged books for Fridays this month and started off with this one.
The book centers around Richard, a selfish lord from the medieval times who’s cursed by a witch to be a dildo; after years of using women to reach his climax without any reciprocation. Now he’s cursed in this form and eternally edged, curse broken only if someone puts the dildo in their mouth.
Felicity is in the middle of writing a historical sex toy book when she goes hands on in the name of research and ends up making a deal to help Richard break his curse.
This book was entertaining, funny, steamy, and educational?! lol there were some interesting historical sex toy facts thrown in there between chapters and I had to look some of them up because there was no way they were true. But like I said, educational lol.
originally wasn't going to add this on here, but then i fortunately remembered i have no shame. my medievalist brain did go a little crazy over the historical inaccuracies, but at least i was warned. i cannot and do not recommend this. points for creativity though.
Felicity (fl) was kind of unfun for me but at least the historical facts were entertaining!! And the plot is even more ludicrous than Stuffed LMAO How did it take them the entire novel to realize his name was Richard (dick)!? #feelingpunny
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Synopsis: Lord Richard used women for his own pleasure, and never cared to reciprocate. Well he came across the wrong woman and was cursed to be a d!ldo until he could truly learn to give pleasure not to just receive pleasure in return. Flash forward 700 years and he may have met the one woman who is willing to give him a chance.
Review: WOW so I love a good sentient shifter romance but this one is so nuanced. I loved the subtle nods to Beauty and the Beast in the prose and in the freakin’ THEMES Y’ALL, it was giving me life! Also the FMC is a historian working on a book about the history of s3x toys so each chapter includes notes from her eventual book and it was just so engrossing and added to the world-building. This book was so spicy but lowkey I think I loved the love story more lol. Seeing Lord Richard’s personal development throughout the book along with Felicity’s walls coming down was lovely to read and it made the spice made it that much more sexy. Most sentient shifter romances are fun and quick because they’re weird and spicy, but this one is extremely well-thought out and nuanced.
It wasn't horrible. Would I recommend? Only if you want to read it to add to your "weird" shelf. It was funny, and the historical "facts" and slang were interesting. There was no connection to the characters at all - which CAN be done in a shortie like this. This just made the whole thing feel flat. There were ofc lots of sexy times, but nothing really special.
I listened to this on audio today and it was a blast. Hilarious, spicy, fun, surprisingly heartwarming?? Thea Masen can do no wrong at this point. And the narration from Unfortunate Reads (hi Cassie!) and Richard Pendragon was fabulous!
Not as much fun as it could have been if it didn’t try so hard to be a treatise about the moral implications of magically turning fictional people into sentient objects. Just a lot of extraneous details and angst over his motivations only to completely gloss over his becoming a better person.
Sometimes ya gotta give stars for sheer ingenuity...
(Although I probably ought to detract some stars for the typos and grammar errors, both easily corrected with spellcheck. And also the two(?) paragraphs of peril, solved so incredibly quickly we probably shouldn’t have bothered with it.)
It was exactly what you'd expect. I enjoyed the writing. She somehow gave us just a dusting of plot to make it have some meaning. I just didn't care for either MC. They weren't awful, but meh.
