This book starts out so calmly. I wanted to go to India myself and meditate like Rafe, strike some yoga poses, let my intruding thoughts pass by like occasional clouds. But not so fast! All of a sudden there is so much more going on (none of which I will divulge).

This is essentially a play, or could easily be made into one (I'd go see it, pass the popcorn), dialogue-based, flashback-filled, character-driven hither and yon. It's really amazing where this leads. Once again I was attracted to all the characters involved, growing in depth as the chapters rolled on: an early girlfriend, a fiancée, potential in-laws he could never please, former bosses, teachers, and those he runs into along the way (Gregory, Malik, Amir egads!). They seem to all play on him, teasing him, testing him, trying to break him, trying to understand and comfort him. In the middle of it all: Rafe, playing those mind games.

Once again the time frame and expanse of the book is impressive. Honestly, when I finished, I had to sit quietly for some time, breathe from my depths, and think about all the clouds that just passed.
