DNF at 61%

Actual rating: 1.5 (I'm feeling generous today)

UnFriendly Warning: there will be spoilers in this review. Both for book 1 and for this book. What? It's a problem for you? That is just SO sad. Your life really sucks, doesn't it?

Yay! Another Stupid Piece of Crap (SPoC™) to add to my ever-growing collection! And, as usual, I can only blame myself for reading it. Because, as usual, I should have this seen coming from miiiiiiiles away. I mean, book 1 offered all the required warning signs of a SPoC™ waiting to happen. But as I have proven countless times, I'm an idiot and a masochist, so I decided to give book 2 a try anyway. Go me.

But anyway.

» You know why this book is such a SPoC™? Because it is not Urban Fantasy. Nope. It isn't even a Crappy, Freaking Paranormal Romance Masterpiece (CFPNRM™). You know what this really is? A Goddamn Mushy Angsty Crappy Romance in Disguise (GMACRD™). I am beyond the allergy stage right now. I think I am going to be sick. Please stand back.

Not only am I utterly disgusted, I am also seriously pissed off. I think I need to kill a few things. Or to hit someone. Or both. Yeah, that would definitely help release my pent-up anger.

Aaaaah, that felt SOOOO good. Thank you so much for your cooperation, we should to it again sometime.

» Now. You would think that this is bad enough as it is, right? You would think that after pulling a Fucking Romance out of her Fake UF Hat, Ms Vanderlinden would have tried to make amends, right? WRONG. The woman is unrepentant. And she manages to make her case even worse by turning Molly (the could-have-been but never-will-be kick-ass heroine) into an Aggravating, Whiny Drama Queen.

This is where the Spoilers from Hell happen. I don't know why I am even bothering to warn you. I guess I'm really feeling generous today *shudders* I scare myself sometimes

So. Let me try and explain this. Poor Aggravating, Whiny Drama Queen Molly is Broken. And she's Broken, too. And I think there's a chance she may be Broken. Then again, you never know, she might be Broken. Yeah, that could account for the fact that she's Broken. That could also account for the fact that this Broken business made me want to kill things. Again.

I'm telling you, dear Molly has the pity party of a lifetime here. To think I complained about Dali in Magic Steals! Well, as pathetic as poor Dali is, she's got NOTHING on Whiny Molly. Dali has yet to pass Pity Party 101, whereas Whiny Molly has a Pity Party PhD (she graduated summa cum laude, obviously). Yeah, Whiny Molly is a pro. She's whine-whine-whining and woe-woe-woe-ing 24/7. The poor girl is a widow, you see. And a BROKEN one at that. This is so sad. What? You think I have no heart? You think I should be more compassionate? Okay, so I don't have a heart. And I think compassion is overrated. And your point is? Even if I did (have a heart, you silly! Please do try and pay attention!), it wouldn't change a thing here. The whole woe-is-me-because-I'm-a-widow-because-I-killed-my-husband-that-I-loved-more-than-life-itself-because-he-set-me-up-to-do-itthis doesn't make much sense? Good. It shouldn't. Wait. I think I kind of got carried away and didn't finish my last sentence here. Let's try and rewind for a bit.

Are you too young to know what this strange contraption ↑↑ is? You are? I am so sorry. Not being part of the Ancient-Yet-Super-Cool-Goodreads-Clique-Who-Knows-What-This-Contraption-Is (AYSCGCWKWTCI™) sucks big time. Your life is pretty pointless, isn't it? This is so sad. Here, have a cookie.

So. What I was (brilliantly, if I may say so myself) trying to point out was that even if I had a heart, the whole woe-is-me-blah-blah-blah business would have left me cold. Why? Because Whiny Molly here is forever grieving for a guy she knew for about 5 seconds. That's where Ms Vanderlinden's talent lies. She doesn't do instalove. Oh no, insta-freaking-love is for sissies. Ms Vanderlinden does insta-freaking-marriage. It's waaayyyyy cooler: girl with the maturity of a 12 year old meets boy who's been around for centuries and sounds like he could be her grandfather, and BOOM! Married. So bloody brilliantthis might be slightly sarcastic. Might. Slightly. Anyway, so Molly and Nain (the husband, you silly! What did I just say about paying attention?!) meet and get married in less time than it takes to blink. He sets her up so that she will kill him (still doesn't make sense? Good. It still shouldn't) and he very conveniently dies. All of this has taken what? I'd say 5 months, 6 months tops. And here we have Whiny Molly woe-ing is me 24/7, like she just lost her husband of 60 years.

» You think Ms Vanderlinden stopped at that? Hahahaha, you can be so funny sometimes. The woman will stop at nothing. Nothing will stop the woman. So Whiny Molly is all "I'm Broken and woe is me" for about 50% of the book and then all of a sudden, BAM! You turn the page and she's suddenly in love with Brennan, her supposed best friend (she's known him for 11 months at least! Wow!). Brennan the shifter, who has been in total and utter love with her and recognized her as his freaking mate the second he first set eyes on her. Brennan, who was brought up by Nain, Whiny Molly's insta-freaking-husband. Brennan, who has been able to feel everything Whiny Molly felt (including when she was having sex with Grandpa Nain, yay) because, you know, she is his freaking mate and stuff. Brennan, who suffered horribly during the 5 seconds Whiny Molly and Grandpa Nain's marriage lasted. Brennan, whose little heart is breaking to pieces because Whiny Molly is woe-woe-woe-ing over Grandpa Nain's insta-death.

Yep, Ms Vanderlinden's definitely got the whole fangsty manufactured drama thing brilliantly mastered. But it's her many insta-abilities I definitely have a weakness for. That takes real talent. Just look at this insta-list of insta-awesomeness: insta-love, insta-marriage, insta-death, insta-widowhood, insta-woe-is-me, insta-best-friendship, insta-woe-is-me-is-forgotten, insta-love², insta-crap, insta-stupid, insta-fucking-everything!!! Please someone, give the lady a medal. Such an outstanding achievement cannot go unrewarded.

» Is there anything else besides the Mushy Angsty Romantic Crap, you ask? Nope. Sorry. Well, okay, there is a slight possibly of me being a teensy little bit too harsh here. So yes, I'll admit that there is Something Else: a gloriously fascinating Greek Mythology for Airheads sub-plot. And since I'm feeling REALLY generous today, I'll even admit that is yet another Something Else. Yep. And it's very cool, too. Want to know what it is? Inner ramblings, Inc aka blah blah blah till you die. This book is bloody amazing, I tell you. I want more

So let me break this down for you. 61% of this captivating masterpiece = 96% Angsty Romantic Crap + 2% Greek Mythology for Dummies + 2% Blah Blah Blah Crap. If that isn't a winning combination, I don't know what is.

►► Bye bye, rest of this series, it will be a real pleasure not reading you.

Okay, I'm gonna tell a story about curry. Every time I make curry it's different, depending on what I got to put in it. So I'm making the curry, adding the tomatoes and the tuna and the carrots and the onions and the potatoes and the curry powder and the olive oil and the salt and the pepper. And then I put in the sesame seeds. And hey, I have this octopus that doesn't taste good by itself, maybe I should throw that in too. And what about these other leftovers I have...

So, basically, there was a certain point in this curry, that I should have STOPPED ADDING INGREDIENTS. This book is like that.

But, you know, that curry? It was edible, not half-bad even, but when I covered the cold leftovers with aluminum foil, IT DISSOLVED THE ALUMINUM FOIL. Did I still eat the rest? Yep, after skimming off the top layer of chemistry experiment goodness. Was it a good idea to eat the rest? Probably not. So, am I gonna read the rest of the books? Well... I have done less logical things, now haven't I?

This book was the bomb.com. I felt so much emotion. Sadness. Happiness. Warm and fuzzies for Bren. Real hate for Nain. I laughed out loud. I wanted to hit things. I sat with my mouth wide open in disbelief. I was confused at times and felt real relief when what I thought wasn't really what it was. This is a definite page turner and February will not be here soon enough. I am certain that you will love this series as I do.

My first review did not save, might be for the best because I went on a bit of a rant. I liked this book. I felt it was more cohesive of a read than the first one and the pacing issues that really bothered me with the first book are nonexistent in the sequel. Ms. Vanderlinden did a remarkable job of portraying Molly's heartbreak and grief in the aftermath of Lost Girl's ending. The character has more depth to her in this book and is easier for a reader to bond with. I liked that we get a glimpse at life in the Nether and Molly's parentage is revealed, which goes a long way in explaining why she was never able to really fit into human society and is even a little off for the supernatural world too. Another positive for the book is the introduction of new characters and and a reintroduction of a former Lost Girl. However, I wanted to throw this book several times...pretty much every time there was a scene with Brennan. His character is no longer likable to me.

He is whiny, manipulative, and even selfish. Sure he does so much for Molly but it is not without strings. He constantly pushes her and pulls her into the direction he believes she should go by whining and brooding until she gives into his demands and his timetable. For someone who claims to love her so completely for the person she is and knows her better than anyone else, ever, he sure does seem to want to change her into his version of Molly: i.e. not Nain's Molly or even Molly's Molly. I feel this relationship is forced, felt that way since book one when he suddenly got pissy and proclaimed his interest after she hooked up with Nain. While it is true Nain manipulated Molly and was at times also selfish, he was honest about what he was doing and who he was. Brennan is not and I feel that his love for Molly was born more out of a Nain complex and lust than true love.

Maybe I still had a little rant left in me. Maybe.

Anyhow, the book did not let a reader down when it comes to fulfilling a need for a darker storyline. For that I say thank you, Ms. Vanderlinden.

*I do have one question though, where the hell are her dogs? They are never mentioned in this book and no one seems concerned that she just left them at her old home without anyone to care for them and look after them. Sure we can think the imps are taking care of them but they are never referred to in this book and they could just as easily been left to starve and eat each other in her old home.

(3.9 Stars)
I always worry when I start the second book in a series primarily because many series start out with a bang and fail miserably in future installments. I am happy to state "Broken" is a great follow up to "Lost Girl." My only complaint is that the editing definitely needed to be better and that is also the reason for my 3.9 star rating.

Out story begins with Molly wasting away in her grief from the loss of her husband, Bain. It's been six months and she still does not eat or sleep. She is due for an intervention from Brennan and slowly she begins to return to the world of the living. She still engages in risky behavior such as hunting alone but she's communicating.

Then she least one of the lost girls she rescued, Ashanti, has been attacked and turned into a vampire. Molly takes her in and helps her learn how defend herself, feed without killing and adjust to her new life. They have a sister's relationship.

Additionally, in this installment we get an opportunity to find out who Molly's parents are and what she really is. There are plenty of new characters as well as the old ones like the imps, action galore, as well as several surprises. Molly's world has just become more interesting and dangerous. I cannot say too much because I do not want to spoil the read for anyone.

If you are interested in an action pack short read filled with every imaginable paranormal creature the Hidden series just might be the one for you. However, I highly recommend you begin with the first book, "Lost Girl."

Yep? Just what I feared it would be from my review of the first book. Stupid love triangle. Why oh why can't anybody write a decent UF without throwing a love triangle in there to fill and bog down what could have been a good story! First, she wants to kill herself for the first half of the book because she can't live without Nain, then she does a 180 f*cks his best friend... Doesn't anyone know how to tackle the trials and tribulations of a couple without needing to do that! So one dimensional. I'm fed up now. The first one was so promising. Woulda coulda but didn't!

“Broken”, second in the 'Hidden' series, gets off to a bad start in which Molly mourns the loss of her one true love.
She's cut herself off from the world and rebuffs anyone who tries to help her (Brennan mostly).
Luckily, it comes to an end eventually and she's back to doing what she does best, meting out justice.
But things are about to get exceptionally difficult when Molly learns the details of her parentage and her true nature.
That information – Godslayer, Abomination, Vigilants - is essential to the survival of two worlds and, for any hope of success, must protect both.
It gets complicated on the romance front as she finally (inexplicably in my opinion) falls for shapeshifter Brennan.
It's an enjoyable read, slightly let down by a limp beginning.

Great read!

This book was even more action packed than the first! It started form the first page and sucked me in. Broken had me feeling ALL of the emotions, right along side poor Molly. Just when I thought I was on board with the story line she throws me off and I am again left in a perfect ending, my heart torn for the sacrifices Molly has to once again endure. Those Fates better watch their back, because if Molly doesn't kick their a$$es soon then I am going to! I need to go now...I am starting book 3 immediately so I can find out what happens to Brennan and....well I don't want to spoil anything so I'll just leave it with that.

I started this book having seen hints of worldbuilding and plot that enticed me to read further despite a few issues with book 1.

I was hoping that things would get better in boom 2, but for me at least they haven't.

Following the action and plot is a bit like watching a lightning fast game of table-tennis. I find myself with metaphorical whiplash of the mind as I try and keep up. The pacing just didn't work for me.

I also had the feeling that this series doesn't know if it wants to be YA or not.

Broken just wasn't for me I'm afraid.

I think that "Broken" out did "Lost Girl." I read the first book of the Hidden series in about four days. It was difficult for me to get into. The was a lack of focus on the plot and the main character, Molly, did not build a connection with me as a reader. With that in mind. I really enjoyed this sequel. I am glad that I decided to give it a shot.

Unlike book one, this story had one clear plot focus rather than jumping around all over the place. Yes, there was subplot points and all, but it was clear what the main story was meant to be. I read this book in one day because I wanted to know what was going to happen.

I liked that Molly, or Mollis, actually developed relationships in this book. By her creating relationships with other character, I feel more for her character. As opposed to my feelings on the first book, I enjoyed the uncertainty that Molly had with the developing relationship between her and her love interest, Bren. It made so much more sense in this book than it did in the first because she was in mourning. Molly seemed more human in this book although she had these supernatural powers and continued to develop them. Molly used her goddess powers instead of just learning a bunch of new ones at an unrealistic pace like the first. Yes, she learned a little more like her blood can help heal, but that's not surprising since she heals.

There were some twists that I liked, but some I didn't as well. I don't want to give them away. I do want to note that one "twist" was ruined by the author. Early on after Tis and Hades was talking about Mollis and the prophecy, Molly mentioned "my parents" referring to these two gods. However, she seemed shocked chapters later when it way made clear by Hades' wife. I think that the idea of them being her parents was already in place and was accidentally treated like it was known by the reader before it should have been.

It took a long time for me to get into the first book. Having read it first, I was able to get interest in this book fairly quickly. However, I was not drawn in from the first page like I normally am while I read a sequel in a series. There were time that I the distance Molly had still bothered me, but at least she wasn't admittedly acting stupid like in the first book. For all these reasons, I like book 2 more than the 1st.

I liked this book far more than I did the first one. It turns out many of the issues I had with that one were actually supposed to be issues, it's just that I didn't clue in to it. I don't know whether that was a failing on mine or the authors part though, perhaps it would be fair to share the blame.

Anyway, in this second installment we get a lot more information on what is going on. We discover that pretty much everything Molly learnt about herself in the first book was a load of tosh. Which kind of makes me wonder what the hell Nain was going on about back then, because he clearly knew something was going on .

I liked Molly a lot more in this one than I did in the last one. Probably because the focus was moved from her improbable and exponentially increasing powers and returned to her as a person. Unlike in the first one where she started feeling invincible and became boring because of it, in this one she learns that even though she has a scary level of power she still can't save everyone and she has to come to terms with that. It made her far more believable when she showed some vulnerability and actually had to reach out for some help.

I also have to say that I love Brennan. He is awesome. He's strong, protective, loving and patient and he doesn't withhold really important details or try to always get his own way through bastardly manipulative tactics. I like that eventually Molly saw that even though she did (and still does) love Nain, he was a huge arse to her and it was okay to finally love Brennan (because he really was the better man). I'm really hoping those two get a Happily Ever After once the world stops trying to kill them both.

I think I'm going to read on to the third in the series when it comes out because I am actually curious about how this is all going to turn out in the end.

Broken may have stolen a small piece of my soul. I read it in less than a day, because I simply could not put it down. Read on for my review!
There wasn't a single thing about this book that I didn't love. It pulled my heartstrings, it made me laugh, and boy did it make me fall in love!

Molly's journey through the soul-crushing despair of Nain's loss is beautifully captured and heartrendingly real. There were times when I hated her a little for the way she treated Brennan, but you know what? It was real. I loved that she struggled, that she didn't just jump from one bed to the next. I loved watching her be reborn from the flames of her loss. This book really defined Molly for me in a way I hadn't realized that the first book, Lost Girl, (read my review here) didn't.

In Lost Girl, I liked Brennan, but I didn't feel like I really got to know him. He was always a bit in the background--the steady grounding presence. In Broken, that grounding presence is brought to the forefront, and the dynamic between Molly and Brennan is a beautiful thing. I must admit, I'm more than a little in love with Brennan. Nain was hot, sure. And he had some of that macho, take-you-up-against-the-wall appeal. But Brennan? He's the one who will kiss you softly while leaving no doubt in your mind that you are claimed. *Swoon*

If the character dynamics weren't enough, Vanderlinden also does an amazing job of weaving mythology into the story and painting the Greek pantheon in a little different light--an almost human light that makes it easier to connect with them (but definitely not any harder to hate some of them).

If you want a book that will speak to your heart and leave you thirsting for more, read this one now!

I thought the first book in this series was great, but this book took my breath away. It stands on its own and I can't compare it to anything else. The journey Molly is now on is gut wrenching and I truly felt for her, to the point I had tears running down my face at points, but I have faith in the author that this is all part of the plan. Finding out Molly's true heritage was very satisfying and I loved the use of folklore and mythology, it really is where fiction is supposed to go, these books have formed a complete world I can visualise completely in my head.

I had a sneaky feeling where part of the story line was going to go and was very pleased when I was right but there were still plenty of surprises along the way and the end was magnificent. It's hard to write a review about this book without giving spoilers so instead I'll just mention the characters and the way it made me feel. I loved seeing Shanti in the book, her character is truly developing and I had the sense that they are all becoming family to each other more than ever. My favourites I think though are the pair of imps, Bash and Dahael, I love it when these two have page time, they are adorable but very fierce!

Molly's journey this time is even harder than in the previous book, but she truly develops and evolves as a character, all over a very believable time scale. It's so satisfying when a character that you've begun to love learns form her mistakes, and whilst not perfect (that would be boring), she does then make decisions based on her experiences. Ms Vanderlinden you've just gained a huge fan, I can't wait for the next book and actually anything you bring out.

The vigilante and self-appointed saviour of Detroit, the twenty-something Molly whose social skills are not always up to scratch, has turned a heroine for real in this second instalment of Colleeen Vanderlinden’s Broken series.
If the reader thought our heroine’s workload was heavy before it is nothing compared to what she is expected to accomplish now: save the world and stop the villains from flattening Detroit in the process. To help her in this quest she has an assortment of creatures, and there is especially one who is more than eager to help her get over the loss of her first love in life. The growing gang around Molly that is working to save young girls from evil now has to stop the whole of the Greek mythology from rampaging urban USA.

The author is taking her main character in a direction I had not anticipated and at first I felt disappointed. Maybe the heroine is becoming too almighty - and the supporting characters too weak - to deliver the kind of gasps of fear lest things go horribly wrong for the good guys; there is a lack of suspense that I want from a novel like this. At times it veers dangerously close to the fantasy romance, but maybe this is what Vanderlinden intended all along.

Luckily the end more than makes up for any doubts I might have had and I could not help but smile at the clever twist the plot takes. The unforeseen ending and the extensive (and unorthodox) use of Greek mythology that is added to the motley crew of weres, vampires and witches add something new and exciting to the genre.

In the continuation of this awesome series by Colleen Vanderlinden Molly finds her self trying to deal with the death of Nain. She exists by having meetings with other supernaturals all day and then goes out and fights trouble all night.

After six months of this existence Brennan decides enough is enough and trys to coax her into something more of a human life rather than just an existence. As time goes on she starts to discover more about herself, her heritage and her powers.

Her aim is to protect the innocent humans in her world and even more so the ones she loves even though she never thought it possible before she met Nain. Just what is she going to have to sacrifice in order to protect everyone and will she learn that she doesn't have to do everything alone.

Just like the first book, it encompasses a badass female lead character and a great supporting cast. At times I laughed, more times I cried, and i was constantly hooked on the story not knowing what twist was going to be chucked in next. And the end, it almost crippled me, totally unexpected and now I am wishing i already had the next book to answer all my questions. An absolute must read series which has a bit of everything in it.

Molly's eyes now glow white as her body continues to undergo changes. Some of Shanti's back story is given. At first she wants Molly to kill her.

Chapter 5 has a great scene with Valkyries. A possible romance seems to start and Molly's true birth story is finally revealed. She even ends up being assigned a new job. A character from the past returns. Unfortunately, there's a war of the gods coming up and it could end up having very bad effects on the Earth.

There is lots of action in this book. The back stories of two of the characters helps clear some things up and the fighting scenes are amazing. Molly's inner and outer strength are both tested. This is an excellent book in the series and definitely gets one wanting to read the rest of the books in the group.

I feel like I've just been drawn into a soap opera car wreck and I can't look away. I might have to read this whole series sort of against my will because Vanderlinden is so good with the cliffhanger and the Oh Shit, I Totally Didn't See That Coming, Except That I Totally Did!

I feel hypnotized. A little annoyed. Add in a pinch of heartbreak and you have an emotion salad.

I kind of wish this book had been written as more of a mystery to be figured out and less of a: we'll just introduce a new character or two at 85% to tie up these loose ends kind of story.

Molly is like that friend you can't stand but find yourself hanging out with anyway and bonding with, against your better judgement. She's a mess, her life is messy, her love life is a nightmare. But still I'm hooked.

This story just gets better and better. I could not put it down until I finished it. I actually felt for Molly when Nain died, I cried (LOL)!!! The storyline continues to get better, though I question Molly's decision making process regarding her love life. Molly needs a man who is strong as she is, or perhaps a little stronger, stubborn and reasonable within certain parameters. She gets Brennan, but he just seems to be "Molly-Whipped" (lack of a better term). If they stand a chance, he will have to grow some balls. I can't wait for the next book. Colleen Vanderlinden definitely knows how to tell the story. Keep up the great writing, Colleen and I will continue to read. Cheers!!!

Fucking love triangle! What the hell?!?!?!
Here I was, happy that I found another series to obsess over, and BAM!
Love freaking Triangle!
Why?! Why would you do this to me?!
The romance in the first book wasn't perfect and it ended kind of weird and sad but c'mon!

I swear to God, love triangles are the worst thing to ever happen to a book.

I couldn't put this book down! Oiy, the death of a loved one, finding new love, kicking more ass, and finding out that Molly isn't just a "demon" but something even more hardcore. Engrossing... the best way to describe the second installation of the Hidden series. You get so emotionally tied to Molly and the rest of the crew and you can't put down the book because then you don't know what happens. Can't wait to read the next book!

Wonderfully written

Hollis must pay for the sins of her parents and protect mortals from the wrath of the Gods. She gives everything she has including her life. Bonded to the man she finally realized she loved only to be separated from him. An old love returns and turns her inside out. Well written and a great read.

Written much better than the first book in the series, the author's true talent is less reliant on cheap comparisons (They are still there, just sprinkled this time. In a way, they still irk me, because they don't quite fit, but it's liable just personal preference). Noticed one huge mistake that shouldn't have been made toward the ending; but all in all, it was enjoyable and worth reading.

Not as good as the first one

The first book was riveting and fast paced. The concept was fresh and original. This book was depressing and difficult to finish. I had it on my tablet for eight months. Read the first book. You'll love it. But stop there.

I loved this book so much!!! This book was amazing and so much better than the first one, which was still really great. I'm completely hooked and can't wait to see what happens to her in the Netherworld!

Wow just Wow! This book was awesome! Molly has evolved so much. She was kick butt before, now she is totally beyond that. There are some major surprises in this book. If you haven't read this series, you need to. You will be amazed!

Cheesy but worth it

I like Molly and everything she represent, she's more human than she realize. The author doesn't spare with this book who I must say is an excellent sequel to the first

This is a fun series. I enjoy the integration of Greek mythology into common parlance and modem day Detroit. I don't enjoy the romantic relationships aspect of the story but it works and the author breaks out the combat often enough.
