In the fourth pulse-pounding thriller in the series, DEA Special Agent Garrett Kohl must find out what’s truly tainted in the energy industry and uncover a deep-rooted plot in order to protect his new business, beloved ranch, and family. Perfect for fans of C. J. Box and Jack Carr.
On leave from the DEA, Garrett Kohl is ready to settle down and build a stable foundation for his family. But that’s easier said than done. In order to give his fiancée, Lacey, and adopted son, Asadi, the life they deserve, and get out from under crippling debt, some risks have to be taken. And shocking alliances have to be formed.
First, Garrett partners with an old nemesis to form his new energy Savage Exploration. Then his estranged, aloof sister, Grace, reemerges, keen on brokering a contract to connect the Kohl Ranch energy play to a pipeline on the Texas coast. But the company’s earlier success is endangered when an explosion at a nearby natural gas plant injures several workers. Garrett begins to suspect foul play and embarks on a winding investigation, teaming up with his old war buddy, Kai Stoddard, and reaching out to his CIA contacts, uncovering a sinister conspiracy overseas.
From an ex-CIA intelligence officer and consultant for the Department of Defense, this exhilarating thriller follows a man’s turbulent journey to fight for his family, clear the names of the people he loves, and hold on to the land that he calls home, culminating in an explosive final showdown that he never could have expected.
Taylor Moore is one of my favorite crime thriller and action adventure authors. Action and suspense combine into an intensity that keeps readers engaged as readers find new depths in the reoccurring characters in this series. In Cold Trail, the fourth intense novel in the Garrett Kohl series, Garrett is on leave from the Drug Enforcement Administration. He’s working to ensure his family has a secure future. This includes his girlfriend Lacey Capshaw, his adopted son, and his father. An alliance has been made to form his new oil and gas exploration company, Savage Exploration. His estranged sister, Grace, shows up with a lucrative idea, but its success is at risk when there’s an explosion at a nearby ranch. Was it an accident or sabotage? Meanwhile a secondary plot line involves the CIA in Afghanistan.
Garrett is a DEA special agent, former Green Beret, ex-CIA intelligence officer and occasional consultant for the Department of Defense. He’s good at finding people who don’t want to be found and hates confrontations that involve feelings. He’s independent, proud, and self-reliant. He also loves his family and wants to ensure they have a safe and secure future. He is someone that you would want to back you up if you needed help. Several characters from previous novels show up in this novel as secondary and tertiary characters.
Diverse characterization and exciting scenes helped pull this reader into the conflicts in the novel. The world building was fantastic. Whether it was a blizzard in the Texas Panhandle or drama in rural Afghanistan, there was a strong sense of place and a feeling that I was transported and living the events alongside the characters.
Engrossing writing, as well as an excellent, dynamic plot will keep readers engaged. The story stays at a high level of intensity throughout most of the novel. It takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster ride that requires them to quickly turn the page to find out what happens next. I also liked how the author brought the two tense story-lines together. The author also incorporated real-world issues into the story arc that added depth to it. Danger, assaults, explosions, love, family, and friendship are woven into the story line.
Overall, this was a high-octane and intense novel with suspense and action that kept me engaged throughout. If you enjoy crime thrillers, then I recommend that you check out this one. I am looking forward to finding out what happens next in this series. This series is best read in order as there are spoilers in the later books in the series.
William Morrow and Taylor Moore provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for September 17, 2024. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine. -------------------------------------- My 4.34 rounded to 4 stars review is coming soon.
Kohl Garrett is again in the fight of a lifetime. There are three to four threads unraveling throughout this book, all having their own battlefront. The name of this book could have been, “So Much Greed”. There always seems to be representation of this trait not only in this read, but the ones prior. There is plenty of action, deceit, compassion, forgiveness, loyalty, fear…and the list goes on. There are new jaw dropping revelations and the secrecy demanded in dealing with them can be frustrating. The most important statement I can make….this book is hard to put down. So pack your food, pull out the sleeping bag and enjoy the ride.
Well the gangs all back for this one: Garrett, Lacey, Asadi, Grampa Butch, as well as Garrett’s nemesis, Vicki, and Garrett’s CIA chief, Kim. After Garrett makes a deal (a partnership) with the devil (Vicki) for the sake of his family and their ranch in the last installment, he has now got him and his family and their ranch in the crosshairs of some of Vicki’s global enemies as well as one closer to home.
The book summary basically introduces one of the primary storylines of the investigation of sabotage of some oil wells on the ranch. However, there are a couple of other storylines that play an integral part in the story. There is one where Asadi and two other teenagers, Savannah and Duke, all of who got lost when they go after some horses who got spooked over the weather. There is another storyline of Kim going on a dangerous rescue mission over in Afghanistan that is a whole other kind of craziness.
The story flips back and forth between the three storylines with a bunch of variables being thrown in that ratchet up the intensity and suspense. For starters, there is one of those infamous TX panhandle blizzards coming that becomes an emergency for Lacey and a crew of others who are out looking for the lost teenagers and horses before the blizzard hits. It also becomes a race for time before it becomes impossible for Garrett and Kai to track down the saboteur and shut the guy down before he does any more damage.
For Kim over in Afghanistan, dealing with vicious and violent factions of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda everywhere she turns, it becomes a race to get to the border where her CIA team can rescue her and one of the people she came to rescue. The end comes quickly in this fast-paced, action-packed story in some really intense and scary scenes for all the MC’s and their friends and family. The epilogue though provides some happy and funny moments.
The continuing character development for the MC’s as well as a couple of the other characters was well done. The pacing was steady to fast and the storylines exciting and kept me engaged from the beginning that instantly grabbed me to that amazing tear-jerking end. Moore has turned out another amazing installment to this wonderful series, and based on the ending, there are some new developments on the horizon in Garrett Kohl’s world on the TX panhandle. I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.5 that I will be rounding up to a 5star review.
Each Garrett Kohl book improves on the previous one. Kohl is a former Ranger, DEA agent and CIA asset and current rancher. Considering he never goes looking for trouble he sure finds plenty of it.
After the events of the previous book Kohl now finds himself in a partnership with the Kaiser Energy Group. When an explosion happens at a Kaiser LNG pumping station it's a tragedy. When another explosion occurs on Kohl land it's a conspiracy.
While Kohl is investigating the events CIA agent Kim is in Afghanistan following up on what she feels is a solid lead on Garrett's adopted son Asadi's brother who had been assumed dead.
Garrett kohl is back and things are looking good money wise. But there seems to be a poacher on the range. Also some environmental protesters as well as Garretts long lost sister. Cold Trail by Taylor Moore is probably the best book so far in this series and a lot of answers are revealed. But there is trouble once again and they have to fight for survival both in Texas and in Afghanistan. I only have one question regarding this book. how can a ranchhand afford a Cabot 1911? I found the book suspensefull and fast paced and it was all over the very day I started reading it. Now I have to wait a year for the next one. Highly recommended.
Really great series. Love the combination of modern western and spy-thriller, works well. And the character development from book to book is beyond incredible- in four books these characters haven't only grew, they came into their own in amazing ways.
The way the novel ended and the way major running storylines been wrapped up, gives the feeling that this was the last entry, which I really hope isn't the case. This series deserves a few more good entries. (On a personal note, really loved the covers of every book).
Once again, Moore supplies the reader with multiple satisfying, intense story lines all alternating to another good conclusion, leaving ongoing story arcs somewhat dangling, in his fourth of an excellent series set in TX and featuring DEA Agent/rancher Kohl. Kohl continues to evolve as a CH as he tries to uncover who is causing the explosions on his and neighboring ranches and discovers the protestors who do not want the pipeline running through his ranch is being led by an old Afghanistan comrade in arms. His investigation is occurring as a a huge snow storm threatens everyone, his son Asadi and friend Savannah are lost chasing horses, and in Afghanistan, CIA Kim & Mario are trying to extradite Kohl's son Asadi’s brother Faraz and get themselves home alive. All of the arcs alternate adding to the fast-pace and increasing intense and harrowing Tone in each arc. The Setting details and the encroaching snow and cold also add levels to the harrowing Tone. Many CHs and good development for most of them. You can read this as a standalone but I highly suggest you begin with the 1st, Down Range (2021) and read the series (See previous reviews.) in order especially if you read for CH development and relationship growth. Themes include the politics of energy resources; ecology and conservation; PTSD in soldiers; the US involvement and responsibility for Afghans left behind, relationship issues on every generational level, and greed and intrigue on local, national, and international levels. RED FLAGS: Vulgar language; Violence; PTSD. Fans of Nick Petrie, C.J. Box, and Lee Child take notice.
Cold Trail by Taylor Moore is an explosive and action-packed addition to the fantastic Garrett Kohl series.
In this latest outing, Garrett is on leave from the Drug Enforcement Agency. He and his son, Asadi, find themselves in the midst of the aftermath of a shocking explosion at a nearby gas plant. Garrett has personal ties to one of the injured workers so he tries to uncover the truth about what happened. Was the explosion an unfortunate and deadly accident? Or was it something far more sinister?
On the Kohl family personal front, Garrett is shocked by the arrival of his estranged sister, Grace. While their dad, Butch, wants nothing but family peace, Garrett has a few qualms about her sudden appearance. Before he can get to the bottom of what is going on with Grace, another explosion takes precedence. An additional surprise awaits Garrett when he discovers old Army buddy Kai Stoddard working with an environmental protest group new his family ranch.
In the meantime, a blizzard is bearing down on them. While Garrett and Kai are investigating the explosions, Asadi finds himself in a perilous situation with others. Although he was reluctant to join them, Asadi makes the best of the increasingly dangerous situation he is in.
Cold Trail is an adrenaline-filled adventure that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. The characters sometimes find themselves not trusting the people they are working with, but they make the best of the circumstances surrounding them. The storyline is well-executed with interesting subplots. The vivid descriptions of the various settings make it very easy to visualize where the characters’ story arcs take place. Taylor Moore brings this thrilling novel to a satisfying conclusion. This latest novel is a marvelous addition to the Garrett Kohl series that old and new fans are sure to enjoy.
I have read all of the books in this series and not one of them have disappointed me instead I wish there were more to read. This author is awesome and knows how to write an amazing collection of books. This series of books has everything in it. And this last book Was so awesome. I just can’t put into words. I highly recommend that you read the first book to the last book and you will know what I mean. Thank you Taylor Moore. Best collection of books I have read.
I have so enjoyed the four Garrett Kohl books. All of the characters are interesting and several appear in each book, providing comfort and continuity. Although Kohl is the main character, chapters switch between other characters and scenarios. As someone who loves fast paced thrillers ( and these are), there are times that I wish there were one less cliffhanger crisis. In this book I also could have enjoyed less about international oil competition. However I look forward to the fifth in the series.
I used to make fun of how people would be sucked into TV soap operas…I mean, it seemed the entire university would shut down when “All My Children” would come after lunch…The characters and situations faced by Garrett Kohl, his family and his various associates, are drawn, in such a manner, that with each novel, my day is ruined, until I finish the book…Taylor Moore brings Afghanistan, Eco-terrorists, rival energy companies and even the son of a former nemesis, that the denizens of the Kohl Ranch have to deal with...I was sucked in, as usual...Good stuff!!!
This series was, without doubt, entertaining. However, you will have to, if an adult level reader, suspend judgement to a degree. These novels read like those more properly in the Y/A genre. There is an odd combination of violence, cut-throat sociopathy and things, uncannily, working out for the so called good guys.
New author for this reader but #4 about an DEA, CIA and rancher-oil and mineral rites. An explosion of oil pipelines, protestors, outside investors and a few family twists and turns. Enjoy
An energy and gas company known as, Absolute Energy, used a consulting group, Solutions Globales, who used an environmental group, who referred to themselves as Cosmic Order to protest and bring negative publicity to their competition. In this case to disrupt the Trans-Palisade Pipeline Garrett and Vikki Kaiser were to have benefited from lucratively. Cosmic Order was lead by a guy Garrett had history with when he served with him in Afghanistan, Kai Stoddard. A Frenchman by the name of Simon Cloutier worked for, Global Solutions, was hidden amongst Cosmic Order, was the hit man responsible for causing the explosions on the drill sites on the Mescalero Ranch and on the Kohl’s property.
I know it was supposed to be Kim rescuing Bayat and Asadi’s bother, Feraz. However, besides Mario, Billy and the Kiowas, it was Feraz constantly rescuing Kim. What are the odds!
My only problem with the book was with Adasi, Duke, and Savannah going out to look for the horses who were startled. They get lost in the dunes on the Mesalero Ranch then crashed. Asadi went to look for help, finds a place at a drill site, hunkers down, until Lacey found him. She then proceeds to leave Him there to go back to the ranch to get a vehicle. Only for Duke to arrive to the site without Savannah and Asadi leaving again to find her. It was a messy situation that didn’t quite make sense. I get being lost and three teenagers being over their heads, but it was overly dramatized. During this time Vikki stays at the ranch, Savanah’s mom goes looking for help, they can’t get ahold of Garrett or Smitty, even though Garrett has been calling Bridger for information about Simon. Smitty seemed to be the only one that thought it was smart to put the investigation on pause to search for his kid. Ike was smart to use his phone to drop location points. Both ended up saving Asadi and Savanna. All of this could have been prevented or dealt with if there was coherent and competent adults earlier. It was dragged out. Could have used those pages to explore more of the real story, in my opinion. Asadi was the true hero in the end. Even if he was partially (Duke is the other) to blame for getting them into that situation to begin with.
Kai ended up killing Simon and saving Garrett while he was hurt himself, carrying him to the open where they were immediately found. Unfortunately, due to his injuries, that’s the last thing he ever did. He had a broken forearm, busted head, and his leg was badly cut. Died from blood loss.
Billy was going to start working with Mario and the Kiowas were going to help Liam Bayat on his farm.
Faraz and Asadi were finally reunited. Asadi realized that he was different though and not the same person he once knew.
Duke was Crystals son from her previous affair with Preston Kaiser that was a secret until he return. There was speculation that Duke left Asadi and Savannah to die in the foothills on top of being drunk during the whole ordeal.
Good read. Taylor is getting better-and-better with each book. However, I felt the book jumped around too much. Idk if this was supposed to be about Garrett Khol or about his whole family. Would like to see more focus on him and the real story in the next book. Asadi getting lost and it taking up half of the book was for me, not important enough. Didn’t take away from the read entirely, I just kept trying to get back to the main story. Kim rescuing Faraz was interesting, even though she came off very badly with how indecisive she was. Faraz took the lead several times. Like he was the CIA operative. Garrett was himself. Would have liked to see more depth from him. Kai came off likable. Too bad he died. I thought Taylor Moore could have done a lot with his character going forward.

Another decent novel by Taylor Moore . On leave from the DEA, Garrett Kohl -in debt from a range fire that nearly destroys his ranch, Garrett takes a chance and goes into the energy buisness and forms Savage Exploration in hopes of providing a financial future for his adoptive son Asadi and childhood girlfriend Lacy. His sister Grace, returns home for the first time since their mother’s death and strange things start to take place on the Kohl Ranch. It’s 9 months or so in the future of the last book and winter time. A unexplained accident at their power plant that sits on his property leave one inspector dead and Sheriff Tony’s son severely injured. Grace, meanwhile is not there to help in the family business but has secondary goal of secretly trying to merge what she thinks is a pipeline deal to the Texas coast with her shady -wealthy husband . This plan from Graces husband brings a team of workers that Kohl knows has military alliances. The Power plant explosion brings an environmental protest group and an ex ranger and former combat alliance, Kai Stoddard as their muscle. Now Garrett feels this Power plant explosion was no accident and after a brief skirmish with kai- Kai does his ex friend / fellow ranger a solid and helps Garrett identify the group (he knows his sister and her evil husband are involved somehow) Garrett and kai take on this over seas terrorist threat using their combined military skills to save his ranch and and Us soil. All this with the forming of one of the winters worst snow storm approaching and Asadi and Savana left behind by Vickie’s nephew (name escapes me-but something stupid.) while Asadi looses Savanah to nephew /possible half brother what’s his name as horses run wild on the sand dunes of the ranch. Butch/ Smitty/Bo/Ike /Mario/ The Taliban/ANA, and Asadi’s brother Farad all are in here so pay attention or better yet: read the book. Asadi’s brother pops up in a CIA plot to bring home Liam’s father from Iran. Farad -a drug trafficker/enforcer is the driver with Kim brokering that deal gone wrong. Cons: A lot of story lines that rotate enough to loose focus on any of them- due to all 3 plots are going on at the same time and they seem to leave the reader behind -with everything resolving at once.and predictable. So the worst thing is done: I just listen because it becomes a “tell”book and not a “show me” book. However, Good detail to action and once again -Moore knows his subject matter and he describes the beautiful Llano Estacado region of Texas like you are there. This could be a movie or a great 3 year series with the right screenwriter. I do not know if I will continue this journey with Kohl-seems like a great place to stop for both of us.
"Cold Trail" by Taylor Moore is a riveting addition and fourth in the series to the burgeoning genre of contemporary Western thrillers. Featuring Garret Kohl, the novel masterfully combines elements of mystery, action, and drama against the rugged backdrop of Texas's vast and unforgiving landscape. Moore's protagonist, Kohl, is a complex and engaging character whose personal and professional lives collide in a suspenseful narrative that keeps readers on edge from start to finish.
Garret Kohl, a former Green Beret turned DEA agent, is a hero who embodies resilience and determination. In "Cold Trail," Kohl is pulled back into his hometown by a sense of duty and a call for help from his estranged family. This return to his roots is anything but a simple homecoming; it brings Kohl face-to-face with unresolved personal conflicts and a dangerous criminal enterprise that threatens everything he holds dear.
Garret has to save his ranch from a crippling debt, give his fiancee Lacey and adopted son, Asadi a good life and therefore, partners with an old nemesis to form a new energy and mineral exploration venture. The company’s success is short-lived, as an explosion in the nearby gas plant leaves several workers injured. On investigation, Garret is convinced of foul play and decides to take matters into his own hands. He teams up with some of his CIA contacts and war buddy Kai Stoddard to dig further. Meanwhile, there is a secondary parallel plot, where Asadi’s long-lost elder brother has been tracked down by the CIA and needs to be rescued out of Afghanistan and into the US. As Garret wades through the murky waters, he uncovers a sinister plot that transcends international boundaries.
The plot of "Cold Trail" is meticulously crafted, with Moore skillfully weaving together multiple storylines that intersect in surprising and satisfying ways. Kohl's investigation into a series of mysterious events is fraught with danger and deception, leading him to uncover a conspiracy that reaches far deeper than he initially imagined. Each twist and turn in the plot is carefully placed, maintaining a high level of suspense throughout the novel.
In conclusion, "Cold Trail" by Taylor Moore is a compelling read that will appeal to fans of both thriller and Western genres. With its well-developed characters, intricate plot, and vivid setting, the novel offers a thrilling ride from start to finish. Garret Kohl's adventures are as heart-pounding as they are thought-provoking, making "Cold Trail" a standout in contemporary thriller fiction. Whether you are a long-time follower of the genre or a newcomer looking for an engrossing read, "Cold Trail" is sure to leave a lasting impression.
This book is non-stop action from page one to the end. I loved revisiting a lot of the characters from the previous two books in this series, but really loved some new ones as well. Trouble seems to follow Garrett Kohl wherever he goes. All he wants to do is take care of the family ranch and preserve it. But in order to do that, he has to sign a deal with the devil. Now there's a huge pipeline deal afoot and the competition is out to stop it regardless of the cost. So when explosions mysteriously occur, Garrett must find the culprit and stop him. He didn't count on an environmentalist group setting up a protest camp, or that his old friend Kai Stoddard would be among them. Then a side situation throughout the story is a white-out blizzard moving in, threatening livestock and humans. Garrett's young adopted son, Asadi and his friend, Savannah must get the horses to the barn, only things don't go as planned, leaving them both in danger of losing not only the horses, bur their lives. I won't leave any spoilers here. I will tell you that if you love a good thriller that reaches beyond the U.S. borders and into the terrifying climate of Afghanistan, you will enjoy this book. While it works as a standalone, I also highly recommend the first two books in this series. Mr. Moore is a talented writer, bringing the reader onto the page with the characters and into the story!
Book Review – Cold Trail – Taylor Moore Author Taylor Moore tells another pulse-pounding thriller in the fourth book in the Garrett Kohl series, “Cold Trail.” On leave from the DEA, protagonist Garrett Kohl partners with an old nemesis to form a new energy business so he can hold on to his indebted ranch and land in the beautiful Llano Estacado region in Texas.
Things get hectic and dangerous when Kohl investigates an explosion and some environmental issues with the energy industry in the region and ultimately uncovers a deep-rooted plot and sinister conspiracy that leads Kohl and CIA colleagues to trying to protect the beloved Kohl ranch and precious family.
Several side stories rotate through this narrative with intriguing characters, meaningful relationships, and thrilling action. Good detail to action as Taylor Moore – a former CIA Intelligence officer and former Defense Department consultant – knows his subject matter and tells an engaging and vivid tale, especially his depiction of the Llano Estacado region – Spanish for “Staked Plains” – located in the northwestern part of Texas, near Amarillo and Lubbock and eastern New Mexico. Excellent example of “vividly seeing” what you’re “reading.”
This is another pre-order series that I hope Moore continues. Well-written, well-told, and riveting modern day Western-style story.
Up front- I'm a fan of this series and admit that it might not be as rewarding to hop in with this latest as a standalone because of the complicated personal relationships and growth we've seen with the characters but gosh- this is a page turner. Garrett and his adopted son Asadi are working on the ranch when there's an explosion, an explosion that kills one, seriously injures another, and brings Kai back into Garrett's life. At the same time, Kim, a CIA officer, is desperately trying to get Asadi's brother out of Afghanistan and finds herself both under attack and hunted. And then Asadi heads out to help round up horses before a snow storm. Whew! Moore deftly weaves these three plot lines together and if it goes a bit over the top in Afghanistan, well so be it. I found myself a tad confused by the details of the oil/gas issue but not by the premise-good guys, bad guys, conspiracy. If I have a quibble it's that we didn't get enough of Garrett's dad this time out. Regardless, it's a fast paced page read with a surprisingly big heart and a few twists. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. Eager to see what comes next.
If you’re bummed out that Yellowstone has ended and hankering for more in the modern western genre, you need to check out the Garrett Kohl series, and its latest installment—COLD TRAIL. Taylor Moore once more delivers with his signature blend of adrenaline-thrill ride, family in crisis, and of course, more than a dash of espionage. It’s all of that and more.
The fourth installment in the Garrett Kohl saga delivers more thrills and new antagonists. More than elevated drama on the high plains, Taylor Moore takes the reader back to Afghanistan in a daring mission to find Faraz, the older brother of the adopted Asadi Kohl, and reunite the two brothers. That’s the beauty of Moore’s storytelling; more than driving action, it’s a flesh and blood story about family that pulls at the heart strings—even when the adrenaline has your heart racing.
Short version, if you’re pining for more Yellowstone, get over it. It’s not happening. So pull on your boots, head out and buy a copy of COLD TRAIL today. Then brew a pot of coffee and settle in. Trust me, you’re going to love it.
“On leave from the DEA, Garrett Kohl is ready to settle down and build a stable foundation for his family. But that’s easier said than done. Another good read from Taylor Moore ranges from the High Plains of the Texas Panhandle to the mountain valleys of Afghanistan, dealing with "undone deeds". As the USA combat troops departed this war-ravaged country, we left behind many who supported us faithfully, some of whom are now being "secretly" retrieved, not with the approval of the current government, which offers for exciting skirmishes. The Kohl Ranch of Canadian, Texas has a "new wealth", oil/gas, and the hope of a new pipeline, but a bad contract with a neighbor and a family member's greed, the environmental protests appear. It is not long before violence, including death, enters the picture. It's just the season for the weather pattern to develop a blizzard, a feared event for a ranching family, and the kids go out into the wind and snow to care for the horses, only needing special rescue themselves. The plate of Garrett Khol is full as he applies his military training to solve the conflict.
Taylor Moore has the uncanny knack of being able to write multiple parallel plot lines that each build up to a high adrenaline surge of page-turning reading. This happens quickly and then sustains the pace, resulting in reading much faster than usual AND not being able to go to bed at night because you are in the middle of the reading rush.
The fourth novel in this Texas series has former DEA undercover agent Garrett Kohl not even having to leave the panhandle to find international conspiracies and killers.
Someone is setting off bombs on the pipeline that crosses Kohl's ranch. He pursues the bomber as a blizzard approaches. At the same time, his son, Asidi, gets lost in the snowstorm and CIA operative Kim Manning is in Afghanistan trying to rescue Asidi's brother.
It's a modern-day Western that will keep your pulse pounding and leave you wanting another book to be written -- soon!
Ooooh, look at the scenery on the cover of this book!
Former Green Beret, DEA agent, and more recently, undercover CIA operative, Garrett is back on his ranch in the Panhandle of West Texas. Protestors are there to stop a new pipeline from going in. Garrett served in combat in Afghanistan with Kai Stoddard who is leading the protestors. Explosions kill some and burn others. Who is behind it all?
This is my kind of book with great characters and lots of action. I've read all four in this series, and if you've followed them, you will remember all the secondary characters - father Butch, adopted son Asadi, ex-colleague Kim, brother Bridger and girlfriend Lacey. They are all back in this one. Lots of chapters take place in Afghanistan as Kim tries to bring back Asadi's brother.
This is book four in the Garrett Kohl series. Garrett is a DEA agent who is now on leave. When an explosion at a pipeline near his land occurs, Garrett decides to investigate. Was it an accident or was something more sinister involved?
This book is filled with action page after page! It’s an exciting thriller that kept my interest throughout. You definitely do not get bored reading Cold Trail! Between a rescue mission in Afghanistan, shootouts, and people and horses lost in a blizzard, I found myself engrossed in the story and wondering what would happen next.
I genuinely like Garrett and his son, Asadi. Garrett’s dad, Butch, is funny and made me laugh out loud more than once.
If you like thrillers that are action-packed and intriguing, you will love Cold Trail!
Grab your hat and hold on tight, this is going to be a bumpy ride! And that's no joke. It's clear that Taylor Moore is an expert in high octane stories that keep a reader on the edge of their seat. I don't think I breathed at all during the last half of this book. The entire stories takes place in just a day and a night. There is high stakes for every single character in this book from Texas to Afghanistan and I don't say that lightly. This is Taylor's crowning achievement. I don't think he can top this. Oh and did I mention how much I love the bits of history thrown in? Or the deep love of family that's so clearly apparent. It's all there in spades.
I still really like this series. This book seemed a bit more convoluted than I remember the previous ones being. But, I totally applaud this author for keeping things interesting and engaging while avoiding the things that bother me so. There's no reason to read for entertainment and be barraged with foul language (and truly, no one I know talks like is often portrayed in books), graphic sex (not even remotely necessary) and graphic violence. I can still enjoy mysteries and thrillers without being dragged into muck.
3.5 stars honestly. I think I give the same review for every installment in this series. I really want to like it. It always starts off great. This one got overcomplicated with three different plot lines going. Children in distress is never one of my favorite devices. Really just continues the story of Garrett trying to resurrect the family ranch amidst turmoil and bad people and trying to reunite his adopted son with his family in Afghanistan. Keeps you interested.
Multiple story lines: Texas pipeline explosions, Afghanistan rescue, kids lost in snowstorm. Lots of action. Some of the side characters are shifty but the main characters just seem to welcome them with open arms and hope for the best. Garret, Kai, Kim. Mario,, etc. (all the main characters) can survive snowstorms, gun battles and explosions with barely a scratch. Basically a pretty good action figure story.
