When a client brings in a Victorian-era album containing photos of the dead, psychic Wray senses something eerier than the images themselves. One photo is strikingly similar to the image of another man—one whose murder is being investigated by cold case cop Mars.
Wray’s psychometry ability reveals the pictures are far more recent than they appear—and that the same killers are behind them.
The investigation leads Wray and Mars to a historic West Yorkshire village and another suspicious death. And all along, a ghostly shadow follows.
Who is the spirit stalking Wray? What dangers linger with two killers yet to be located? And what answers might be found within a family history poisoned by evil?
Wray and Mars must unravel the mystery—before more faces are added to the book of the dead.
The Wray Mallory series—mystery and suspense with a paranormal twist—includes characters introduced in the Sullivan Gray series and the Braddock & Gray Case Files.
Raised on a farm on the Canadian Prairies, words quickly became my means of exploring the world around me and giving life to the one created in my imagination. Fascinated by ghost stories and crime fiction, I have been writing both for well over two decades, drawing on more than fifteen years in a career in a criminal justice setting. When not putting Scrivener through its paces, I enjoy reading, portrait drawing, travel and spending time with family and friends.
This was a minor character in the series around the Sully & Dez investigation series. Starts with a Lady coming to the pawn shop where Wary works with weird photo album. The lady is very uncomfortable with this and want it out of the family home. Wray picks up strong energy from it and now the story begins.
This reads like an ACTION HERO movie!! Wray, backs down to no one, she brings her "A" game to every challenge!. I love her FIRE and her willingness to take on the tough cases , even though she knows it WILL be running through the FIRES OF HELL!. She is TRULY one of the best written female characters i have read in a long time. Fully fleshed out personality. Her GRIT and depth of spirit. The sense of her soul scarring losses, abandonment by her family, post war trauma amongst many other difficult life issues, are all there woven inside Wray. Yet in all that she is full of gratitude and a distant hope... Those are the beautiful droplets of tenderness that bring her humanity to life! I HOPE there are many more Adventures for Wray, paranormal or otherwise! She is BIG SCREEN MATERIAL! Also, for potential readers, don't skip the "afterwords", you will get a glimmer of the amazing woman who has written these stories ! (You will also understand where Wray gets her CHOPS! LOL!) I found myself choked up reading her list of thankfulness to those along her journey. I admire the GUTS it takes to leave the comfort of a profession with a guaranteed paycheck, and jump into an uber competitive crucible of a career path where you have to believe in your CRAFT, and BET on yourself TO SUCCEED in order to eat! Lol! No small LEAP! Being a SUPER FAN of all the author's various characters and storyline, I don't see any risk for her at all! SLAM DUNK! Hugs Heather! NJ fan for life!!! Keep killing it Wray!!
I really, really like Wray, and this story makes her justice.
Here, we see her at her best, fighting her way to the truth on behalf of Isla, stubborn and unrelentingly. But this time we see some introspection, too; a reflective side that hasn't been present in the previous book. Isla's story holds some inescapable parallels to her own and Wray can't help to wonder about her own family. I liked that, I liked to see more of her inner self.
It's great that part of the story happens in England, too. And the sense of darkness and danger that permeates the whole book. The murder mystery is fascinating, but the family mystery is too. Isla's fears are absolutely understandable, sometimes the truth can be devastating and she's afraid that her whole world could come crashing down around her. Her comings and goings about wanting to know about her mom and her family are rational and emotionally sound.
So, yes, I very much enjoyed this story and will go to read the next one in this series ASAP.
I love these books, still like Sully more, but this is a very close second and her and Mars' relationship is coming along nicely. The story is as ever excellent, she again flits between Kimotean Rapids and England, Haworth this time. It's well written, and excellent story and while she isn't gaining anything from doing these cases, I love reading the story and how it gets resolved. Mars bless him gets hurt every time. His boss is protective of him, but comes round to using Mallory to deal with the case and alls well that ends well. Especially if you are Mallory.
I liked the Wray Mallory character when I read the Braddock & Gray Case Files. I was so happy when H.P. Bayne wrote another book with Wray as the protagonist. This was a little dark, but I loved it. When part of the story played out in England, it was fun looking up the locations Wray was in; they actually exist. I have read all of the Sullivan Gray, and Braddock and Gray books, and the first Wray Mallory book, and I highly recommend this book.
Wow! Another great story by one of my favorite new authors. Wray is unstoppable when it comes to finding out the truth and the twists in this story just kept on coming. Plus you can’t help but wonder where Mars and Wray’s friendship is going. They make a great team professionally but could there be more to it? Just bought book #3 to find out more.
A very dark but compelling tale. I have heard of Memento Mori but this takes it to a whole new level of depravity. I enjoy reading Wray’s stories. I love her ability. I love that her story crosses paths with Sully and Dez. Masterfully written.
H.P. Bayne has created another winning episode in the life of Wray Mallory. The depth of her characters and the suspenseful unfolding of her story quickly hooked me. I couldn't put it down. I'm looking forward to the next time I get to join Wray on an adventure
Wray is back in her 2nd book. When someone brings an old photo book into the pawnshop, Wray gets a creepy reading from it. The mystery that follows is soooo good. Mars ends up working the case with Wrays help. I can’t wait for the next book!
I love H.P. Bayne's work, and this one was equally hard to put down. I would love to see Mallory's stories continue, similar to Sullivan Gray. Crossovers would be excellent!
I enjoy the Wray Mallory series. I wasn't sure what to expect with this series branching from the Sullivan Gray series. As it is, the Wray Mallory books are complimentary without being dependent on any other series. It's a great read for fans of the genre.
After being introduced to Wray in the Sullivan Gray books, reading more about her has been great. Understanding what she does, how she copes with her ability makes this book an interesting read. Well worth reading.
I’m absolutely loving this series. The characters are so fun, the witty dialogue is the best. It’s the perfect blend of mystery and paranormal. I’m diving right into book 3. I hope there will be more to this series.
A macabre find. A book of the dead from the Victorian era. Pictures of them immediately after their death. Isla comes to Wray to help get rid of it. While Wray was investigating it her powers show that one of the pictures is of a murder victim from the last 30 years. This starts an edge of your seat adventure finding out the truth. Excellent read.
