I'm Fine... Thanks

Rate this book
I wasn't supposed to take on any new clients.
All my current couples were already a handful.
A marriage therapist with a failing marriage.
If only they knew.
That is until Kami Lynn walked into my office without her husband.
I only treated couples.
I was supposed to help save her marriage, instead I was the main reason for its destruction.
I did everything the way I was supposed to.
I graduated college.
Went straight into my career.
Got married and had a few crotch goblins and even accepted an outside baby for that man.
Then why am I sitting on my couch with a bottle of wine, bills scattered all over the coffee table and divorce papers that I have been prolonging on giving my husband?
So, no... I don't need any help. I'm fine... thanks.

When asked how she’s doing, Dr.Astoria Jacob’s typical response is “I’m fine…thanks”……well she’s far from fine being married to a B.A.N.

When I tell y’all this man bathed in audacity DAILY!!! I mean he washed his face in audacity! Brushed his teeth in audacity. Ate it for breakfast lunch and dinner and draped his warm body in it at night when it was time for bed!! Y’all wouldn’t believe me if I told y’all some of the ish this man was on so I’ll allow y’all to read for yourselves.

Astoria is a successful marriage therapist and you would think that helping other people save their marriages would rub off on her but unfortunately hers is sinking quicker than the titanic. She’s going through life trying to be the best mother she can be to her teenage daughters while trying not to catch a case when it comes to her husband.

When her girls trip finally makes it out the group chat it’s up in the Maldives and she had no idea that she would run into the HNIC in every sense of the word and allow him to give her the soft life she so desperately needs.

When two married people with 💩ty spouses link up in paradise a time will be had!

I’m really enjoying Jahquel’s catalog. Her pen is so versatile and the range when it comes to her characters and storylines are so different. You honestly don’t know what to expect reading her work but a good time is almost always guaranteed to be had!

This is a forbidden romance if I've ever read one!! Also a billionaire romance.

There is a little bit of everything in this book. Twists and turns, betrayal, friendship, romance, emotional depth. I loved that the FMC and her BFF are both doctors in their own fields. I LOVE to see successful and wealthy black characters because it IS possible and representation DOES matter, even for us adults.

Besides the betrayal, this was a beautiful story of sticking up for yourself, learning from your mistakes, and wanting/taking better for yourself. Not holding yourself back. And a reminder that divorce is sometimes the answer, and that it doesn't mean the end of the world but can sometimes be a new and better beginning.

Chile Jace had ALOT of audacity. It was interesting to see Bray and Dr. Stori relationship grow cause don’t let your wife/husband stop you from finding your TRUE soulmate teehee. This book was messy but I’m glad everything was resolved.

Stori x Brae

Man, Stori put up with Jace for way too long. I almost didn't respect her. That man was hot trash. After his betrayal, Brae was harsh, yet so loving...exactly what Stori and her girls needed. I loved that she got to experience that kind of love from him. The ending felt incomplete to me because I wanted karma for Jace. You don’t get to be this terrible without consequences.

This book was CLEARLY not my cup of tea.

Oh how I wanted to DNF so many times but don't feel right about rating/reviewing a DNF so here we are.

I feel like this book could have been about 30-40% of it's length. You immediately understand from chapter 1 that the FMC's husband is no good. They don't get along, he cheats, has trouble holding a job, not responsible, skips out on his girl children while favoring the boy he had with another woman while the FMC was pregnant with their second child. and the list goes on and on. ..... AND ON AND ON. Instead of it being one chapter about how he's not a great guy, it's the first 3-4 chapters of the book.... I think her complaining about her husband makes up at lease 72% of this book. Like we get it girl. You don't like him... your friends don't like him... your daughters don't seem to like him... your marriage counselor colleagues also say get out of the relationship.... yet you stay. you stay and just keep complaining.

It's a book of complaining when she could have just filed for divorce and been a strong, independent, educated, boss lady. Instead it was her venting and whining about how much she didn't want to be married to this guy anymore.

Also, this is a MIND blowing representation of couples where literally every couple in the entire book has infidelity and cheating except for one couple that I know of.... like that's insanity. And how do you get over it? filing for divorce? of course not!! instead, you just cheat yourself.

I really thought we were past calling women Sl*ts and wh*res? I hated the name calling, the threatening of people to sign divorce people, threatening people's careers, this cannot be how people actually talk to one another or try to woo one another right?

Why do I want to cheat with somebody, while being mad my husband cheated on me, and hoping this new guys I'm dating wont cheat on me in the future?

Why would I want to be with somebody who calls their ex wife rude and derogatory names?

Why would I want to be with somebody who threatens to blackmail and wreck the career of his ex partner?

no thanks.

literally one quote from the book when the FMC's character was wondering if she needed to open her car door herself when a guy who had been flirting was standing right there and his response was 'If you're not sucking my d*ck, I'm not opening your car door.'

Gag. these men are losers. Stop throwing around money as if it can fix the worlds problems and acting like this.

Girl should have just filed divorce papers and learned to be happy by herself with her kids and rocking her boss career... but I guess she'd have nothing to whine about so we obviously couldn't have that.

I was SO looking forward to the whole 'marriage counselor who has a failing marriage falls for a client'. I thought there was going to be a huge surprise when he actually showed up to therapy but nope.. her workplace and career was about 1% of the book sadly.

What a disappointing read. I'm hoping my books for the rest of the year can only go up from here.

This book was a hard read for me. I am not a fan of the long suffering FMC trope. This FMC worked my last nerve! A good 40% of the book is her detailing out what a doormat she is for everyone in her life most especially her trifling husband. The marriage therapist with no backbone and trash marriage was sending me. I’m not a fan of “get your lick back” but the audacious assholery of her husband and her unwillingness to leave him had me literally yelling, “girl, if you don’t get your lick back.”
I love an intentional MMC that lovingly applies pressure and anticipates needs. Unfortunately, Stori(FMC) didn’t have any personal growth so it just gave weak damsel in distress. I wish we had been able to see her recognize the areas she needed to heal/grow and then walk into her HEA.
This book is too long and there was outside family drama/backstory we could have done without. The ending was quite abrupt. We spent 85% of the book hearing about her husband’s f-boy ways, we deserved to learn how specifically he lived unhappily ever after. The book description is a red herring, that’s such a small part of the overall plot. This one was meh to just okay.

I was surprised that I enjoyed this story about a marriage therapist, in a failing marriage. And....Her best match was not supposed to be hers.

would’ve been good (spoilers)

This would’ve have been a really good story if it weren’t for the repetitiveness. I had to go through 3 chapters of one pov (Astoria) and all the chapters were a repeat of the chapter before. Actually all her chapters were the same dang thing. By the time I got to the part I was supposed to have been happy about, I was exhausted. I no longer cared about the details and began to skip an insane amount of chapters. I really did not care what happened in between anymore. This woman was so stupid on so many levels it’s not funny, and it was even worse because she knew she was being dumb. Her daughters knew she was being dumb. Everyone she knew knew she was being dumb. Usually when the reader gets this upset about characters it means the author did their job. That is not the case in this story. If she didn’t repeat the same thing in every chapter, maybe gave a chapter in half to it, and then began to move on; it would have been waaaaay better. But to give a majority of the book, AND THEN PUT A SUPER LONG FLASH BACK in there was demon work. I didn’t feel sorry for her at all. You too dang old to be that dang dumb. Now that I’ve gotten to the parts where she’s moving on with Bray I don’t even wanna read those chapters I just skip through them. And to know she doesn’t even file for divorce until about 80 something percent into the book is crazy work. This author could have edit this book down so much and it would have been a five star read in my opinion. ATP I’m not reading the other books in this series, it’s too much work.

I must say I absolutely loved them kids. They were everything to me, so mature, a little sassy, and smart. I liked Bray but throwing money everywhere was tiring as well, like we get it. But other than that he was a good character.

P.S. this story was so exhausting I don’t even feel like proofreading my review. Sorry if some things don’t make sense. I’m over it.

This book was everything. Can't believe Jahquel J had me rooting for infidelity but I was rooting for Story to put it on him. I didn't give a damn about her marriage and neither did Jace. The audacity was strong with his ass. I never wish death on people but when he got in the accident, I had to check myself bc my first thought was "I hope he'a dead" I can't wait to listen to the rest of the series.... whenever it gets in audiobook.

Maybe it's because I'm a therapist, but I found the main character insufferable, along with the other characters.

Messy, real messy. But life things don't always happen in the order we would like- happiness sometimes is the realization that you had the power to choose all along.

This was a ride!

I started this book off so discouraged with all the characters involved. It seemed like everyone was OK just being stuck in dead end relationships. Dr. Stori worked my nerve being a therapist in desperate need of therapy and I was screaming at my book. My emotions were on 10 and I almost gave up but I'm glad I stuck it out. Things took a turn midway through the book and choices were being made that I normally would NOT agree with or condone...but sometimes in life, it just is what it is. Jahquel J made me love these characters and root for their happy ending...and then she gave it to me.
I enjoyed reading about this family. Both families and hope there are more stories after this
I definitely recommend this book, just take your blood pressure medicine before reading.

Stori wanted to live her soft girl life and Jace wasn’t giving that to her. Jace was a straight up no good for nothing husband.
I wish Jace had got his just dessert because he needed it after being such a A**hole.
Bray was that man and he stood on business.

An amazing slow burn, this story was unpredictable and I enjoyed reading it from beginning to end. It’s amazing how we women/wives stay in toxic or unhealthy relationships for the sake of children and familiarity. It’s like she stayed too long but left at the right time.

Astoria husband Jace had me pissed in this book, I mean he was a Str8 Boy! How do you favor your son from another woman over your daughters you created with your wife.

I was so glad Astoria went on that trip with her girls, that’s when she met the man her soul needed and he met the woman his woman needed. Astoria got the love she deserved.

This story is a hot mess but very entertaining. I was planning on continuing the series but the way it's set up you have to.

Recommend to others: Sure, but if grammar is a must for you, you may want to skip this one.

This book made my heart smile & laugh out loud. This was so real because so many times people stay longer than they should. Ain’t no way this book had me cheering for infidelity 🤔 but guess what…. I’ll do it again!!! 😊😎

Favorite Quote- “As a woman, I wanted to be led instead of having to do the leading at times.”

good while it lasted

**SPOILER**

At some point, you get tired of being hit over the head about the same thing. There’s so much inner monologue that it becomes draining and repetitive. Astoria should’ve left a looooong time ago. All her reasons and excuses weren’t good enough, and she took way too long to say something to Jace. It’s one thing to stay, and it’s another. Let the mothafucka talk to you however he wants. The least she could’ve done is dug in his ass more often.

A lot of time was spent building up certain aspects just for it not to have much impact on the story or be fleshed out. Kami dirt should’ve been dished out in this book; ion care if we hear about it in Harlym’s book. It was mentioned here and very pivotal to the development of not only their marriage but also her character and how that would’ve affected Bray; it should’ve been discussed. If more time were spent on that instead of sex or these long-ass monologues, the book would have all the juice in the world. Bray should’ve aired Kami's shit out after she went public. Seeeee👀, if he had known about the length of the affair and their history, this would’ve been the perfect time to air her out 🤷🏾‍♀️🤭. But ig.

Also, what about Tyler? He’s so irrelevant but prevalent in the destruction of their marriage. Like I’m not sure if he likes his sisters or if he wants his parents together. His character is so blank. I would’ve loved to know more about his home situation and how he viewed everything that was going on in the house. The sisters barely interacted with him. How do they feel about their brother? Also, where is Luna? She was mentioned in full detail and is so important to Bray, yet we haven’t had any interactions between them. Like how are the girls with Luna, and have they met her? We don’t know because it was never touched on. Everything that would’ve added more depth was brushed over.

Did not finish 40%

Sigh, another one bites the dust.

I’m starting to get a little pissed off at these authors who keep dragging these stories where women are being cheated on or mistreated in their relationships. And so far this is the worst I’ve read

Sis KNOWS her husband treated her like poop and it’s repeated several times in her POV. So in my head by the time she meets Bray I’m expecting her to leave her husband, but noooooo she’s cheating and showing her ass like ma’am. & Bray too is there w his big head cheating. Ugh. I hate cheating so much. It literally turns my stomach

Why??? What’s the point of being unhappy, having reached the end of your tether but you cheat AND use the excuse of unhappiness and bc your husband did it.

Is that not the height of foolishness or lack of self respect? I’m gonna leave this authors works alone bc writing women like this feels too much like an attack

The moral of the story don't let your wife or husband get in the way of meeting and falling in love with you r real soulmate LOL. I am NOT a fan of stepping outside of your relationship or marriage. My only wish is that the FMC and MMC would have remained friends (no benefits) until each of them were divorced. It's one thing to teach your daughters to be true to you and do want makes you happy.
It's another to Convey even if that means cheating on your husband (even if he did cheat first, you stayed...and stayed...and stayed). I did love how the Bray took care of Stori. She never had to second guess how he felt about her or figure anything out on her own, unless she wanted to.

THIS WAS SO GOOD 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

FROM JUMP THIS BOOK HAS ME HOT AND SIDE EYEING TF OUT OF STORI FOR BEING SO SMART, YET SO DUMB 🙄🤦🏽‍♀️. AS THE SONG SAYS EVERYBODY PLAYS THE FOOL SOMETIMES, SIS GAVE PLAYING THE FOOL A WHOLE NEW MEANING. SHE WENT INTO THAT ISH SHOW OF A MARRIAGE KNOWING THAT PHUCK 🥷 JACE WAS A SELFISH SELF CENTERED BUM OFF A COMMUNITY🍆 HAVING MAN/CHILD HENCE THE SIDE BABY THAT CAME BEFORE THE RING 🙄🤬. TALK ABOUT PASSIVE AND BEING TREATING LIKE ISH ALL WHILE DOING EVERYTHING SOLO WHILE THAT BIH DOES WHATEVER WHENEVER HOWEVER WITH NO CONSEQUENCES. NO ONE IN HIS LIFE RESPECTED HER BECAUSE HE NEVER RESPECTED HER. I CHEERED HER ON WHEN SHE FINALLY FOUND HER VOICE AND STUFF HER GROUND AGAINST HIM AND HIS UGLY AZZ MOMMA.

JACE, TONYA, KAMI, AND CAM AIN’T WORTH THE NUT THAT THEY RODE IN ON OR THE EGG THAT PRODUCED THEM

BRAY WAS THE EPITOME OF A BOOK BAE/I NEED HIM IN REAL LIFE TYPE OF MAN, LBVS. FROM THE MOMENT HE MET STORI THAT MAN DIDN’T PLAY ANY HER OUT HER DAUGHTERS. IT’S SOMETHING ABOUT A MAN THAT LOVES YOU FOR YOU, ENCOURAGES YOU, SPEAKS LIFE INTO YOU, AND ALLOWS YOU TO BE IN YOUR SOFT GIRL ERA, SEXY ASF. THAT MAN MOST DEFINITELY EXUDED BDE😍😜. YOU COULD FEEL THE CHEMISTRY AND SEXUAL TENSION BETWEEN THESE TWO THROUGH THE PAGES. I LOVED THEM FOR EACH OTHER 🫶🏽

I WOULD’VE LOVED TO SEE HOW HER DIVORCE TURNED OUT CAUSE IK THAT LIL BIH AND HIS MOMS WEREN’T GONNA MAKE IT EAT ON HER. AND FOR ALL THE EXTRA TEA TO BE SPILLED CAUSE THAT CAM AND KAMI😳👀🤦🏽‍♀️

I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO READING EMBER AND HARLYN BOOKS.

When going through the storm and finally the sun shines through…

This book definitely was worth the read it touched on the things that we as women sometimes allow holding on to something that we know deep down from all the red flags we notice that we should have let the toxicity go. Astoria allowed herself to get lost in loving and trying to be everything to Jace even she dealt with his infidelity and selfish ways. Day in and day out she counseled couples who were experiencing disconnection in their relationship but couldn’t follow the same advice in her own. I was so happy when she took the time to go away on vacation to cater to herself for once and ended up finding the man who was created just for her Bray Wilshire. Bray was going through his own set of problems with his wife of 5 years Kami and he was over the marriage entirely. Meeting Astoria sparked something in Bray and he was letting up off of her he stepped in and showed her how she was supposed to be treated. I was so happy they got their happy ending they both deserved it!
