Emily Dalton leads a secure and privileged life with her husband William and their two strong-minded daughters, Connie and Jenny. But their happy world is shattered when, in 1912, William makes a trip to America that ends in tragedy. Emily and her daughters cope as best they can, but crippling debts quickly overwhelm them and they are forced to abandon their large family home. This is only the beginning, however, for soon fighting breaks out with Germany and, as the whole country is gripped by the chaos and heartbreak of war, they find their lives change beyond recognition. Connie, recently married to a much older man, goes to work on the trams when her husband is sent away. Jenny decides to become a nurse and soon finds herself facing the horrors of the front line. Like everyone else, they can only do their bit and hold on to the hope that one day they will be reunited with those they love...
Dee Williams grew up in Rotherhithe, East London, and left school at fourteen. After living abroad, she settled in Hampshire with her husband, where she remains active as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness while staying close to her family.
Once again an enjoyable read by Dee Williams. At the start this book held my attention, I especially liked and was interested in the events surrounding the launch and the sinking of the Titanic. For me the story became a bit boring in the middle , but I quickly regained interest as it picked up pace again. The main characters in the book are sisters, Connie and Jenny Dalton, who along with their mother have to learn how to survive without their father and the lifestyle they were used to. I felt the story really came to life with the character of Molly, who worked for Connie and Jenny as a maid, she and her family provided a much needed contrast to the lives of the Daltons.
This isn't going to win any literary prizes but there again I don't think the author has any pretensions in that direction. It's an easy read with a satisfyingly happy ending
This book is such a treat, best read with a brew. Sunshine After Rain started off endearing and sweet.History within history. It began with a glimpse history of the titanic whilst battling with the suffergette movement two different sisters that shared the same fight, however there was a bigger fight to survive right from the beginning that built up their great independence which led them settling into taking the mens job in the first world war.It briskly turned into a thriller that still kept it's glow of sweetness and the importance of being true to yourself, being a woman, being a sister and a daughter.Every young woman should read this, despite it being an historic novel it still had it's values like a non fiction. When books turn out better than anticipated, now that's a treat.
What's not to like, one of those books you want to keep reading, a good mixture of sad and happy, so now I'm on to my next dee williams, been years since I last read her books but a nice change,
This was such a historically accurate story you felt part of the story itself, there was plenty wear & happy times from start to finish, I truly recommend that you purchase this book, I know you will enjoy it immensely
Emily and William live a charmed life with their daughters Connie and Jennie until William heads to New York on the Titantic. After Williams death the state of his finances come to light and Emily, Connie and Jennies lives change forever. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Very readable saga following two families from the Titanic disaster through to the end of WW1. Nice and pacy though character development a tad on the shallow side.
Great historiacal fiction based in the war years. It is a pager turner and I thorougly enjoyed reading about the two families in this book. It is a collison of two worlds and the first world war with it's loves, shocks and trauma brings two unlikely families together.
it was a good book to read. it was fascinating how you got the impression the family were well off and secure how they their maid who came from a rough area they gave her pity but before they knew where they were they were in a similar situation. bringing the titanic into it was an interesting twist. the sisters survival after was the best part of the book you kept thinking thats not a good idea or yes do that!
