Prince Charming was a putz. Prince Charming number two was even worse. After the last prince ran off without any notice, breaking her heart and their engagement along the way, Nemesis Mussolini swore off men and passed the time kicking ass and slinging drinks, something her mafia father would never approve of. But, when her boss Clancy ups his flirtations, it's difficult to remember she's not interested, especially when he gets that delicious evil glint in his eye that has her melting. Just when Nemy starts to think all men might not be bad, she hears whispers about Clancy's less than legal past, and wants to run like hell from the idea that he could be just like her father. Great ... Prince Charming number three may possibly be on FBI's Most Wanted. While Nemy and Clancy tumble down the romance road, hitting potholes every step of the way, Nemy discovers how much of her heart already belongs to Clancy, and how much of a Don's daughter she really is. But she must learn to trust again. Can Nemy surrender in time to get her happily ever after, or is she hell-bent on letting her past keep her from the one man who could be her true Prince Charming?
N.L. “Jinxie” Gervasio is a creator and destroyer of worlds, editor and author, and has discovered she’s quite good at the romance thing—writing it, that is. Jinxie spends most of her time—when not working in IT—chained to her laptop writing, editing, gaming, or watching movies. But mostly writing and editing.
Born on Friday the 13th, her dad wanted to call her Jinx; her mom said no. After 34 years, she discovered the nickname, and she's grown quite attached to it, thereby choosing the moniker as her interwebz handle. She lives in Tempe, Arizona with her infamous mother, Umi, Princess the Chihuahua, and Bellatrix Le Shepsky. When she’s not writing one of her own stories or editing a client’s novel, she enjoys playing video games the likes of "Skyrim," "Dragon Age," "Assassin’s Creed," or "Tomb Raider," learning new crafts, creating beautiful art, and has had the pleasure and the heartache of experiencing a love far greater than she could have ever imagined.
I'll be completely honest. I originally purchased the book for two reasons: 1) it sounded like it could be interesting, but mostly 2) because the author is a Twitter friend.
I was pretty much hooked right away. I love the way she writes - it puts you right into the character's head, even if it is a little chaotic (but, hey, whose head *isn't* chaotic, right?). I loved how little things about the female main character, Nemy (Nemesis) are revealed throughout the book - you don't learn everything important right up front like you do with some books. Given that it was written in first-person, I felt this was especially important otherwise you might start to lose interest in the character.
Some chapters jumped ahead in time by a day or two, others by a week or more, but this was handled well by the author. She rarely just came out and said "And a week later..." blah blah blah. No, it was usually embedded in the first paragraph or two, but not in an obvious "oh, I've gotta let the reader know about the timeline somehow" kind of way. It was subtle and true to the story.
Even though the book has a lot of mafia leanings in the storyline, it doesn't take center stage and I'm actually glad of that. It allowed for better character development. My only actual "complaint" (if you could really even call it that) is that while the main characters had wonderful character development, some of the supporting characters lacked a bit of that development and did, at times, seem like they were just there to keep the story moving. That didn't mean that those storylines weren't interesting, just that I would have liked to have seen a bit more development and conclusion to some of those storylines. Perhaps those will come in future books?
Either way, I give this book 5 stars. I would have read it straight through non-stop if it weren't for silly life things like work and sleep. ;-)
This is not the genre I look for first when book-shopping, but I'm glad I gave Nemesis a try. The characters are realistic and believable enough to keep me interested, and the author's first-person perspective places you directly inside the main character's head. Plenty of girl-power going around here, but not without the softer side that so many tough-girl novels seem to forget is just as important. Is it a romance novel? Sure it is, and more. It's not too heavy, not too soft. This one is just right.
N.L. Gervasio brings action and romance into - and out of - the strip club. An excellent romance with just a hint of comic relief, you can believe such events happen in every day life. She brings to life a group of girlfriends and the romantic ups and downs for some of them - especially the quite jaded heroine, Nemy. This is a book with substance, and difficult to put down. The author expects to put out more about the others from this group, and I look forward to the next installment.
NL Gervasio has a knack for well placed humor and action. Oh heck who am I kidding? Sarcasm is the primary language Nemy speaks, much to my delight. This ain't your momma's romance novel... Nemesis takes matters into her own hands to make sure Prince Charming doesn't get too big of an ego. She is very much the modern woman needed to spice up the romance world. I cannot wait to read more from this series!
I have a hard time finding books that hold my attention but then a friend suggested I read this a I Loved it. It grabbed me and held me.... I didn't want to out it down. I can not wait for the next one.
