"Maybe all children are snow children," Mama said from the sofa. "Moulded by others, but with wild hearts that long to be free." Zitat Seite 45
She wasn´t sure exactly where to go from here, but she now knew that, to move forward - to refill her life with friendship and adventure and joy - she needed to figure out how to face her fears and step out into the world once more. Zitat Seite 125
Herkese tavsiye ederim. Kesinlikle okuyun. +10 yaş. 🥳
[Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.]
This was so beautiful and magical! This novel is definitely a book that you should read this winter if you need something to feel cosy and heartwarming.
Sophie Anderson has got to be one of my favourite authors. Her writing style is so pleasant to read, she creates characters who are all truly loveable, stories that are touching, and the atmosphere is so perfectly rendered…! Every time I read one of her books, I can so easily picture and imagine what is happening—and 'Snow Girl' is no exception.
-
'Snow Girl' touches a lot of topics, from grief (somehow), to trauma, but also making new friends, confronting your fears, and so on.
-
The main character, Tasha, is a young girl who is afraid to adventure, go out, talk to people she doesn't know, because of something that happened to her a while back. She wasn't like that before—she used to be adventurous and brave.
But when she meets Alyana, the Snow Girl, who came to life because of a wish Tasha made, she learns to trust again, to discover again the joys of exploring and finding new things, and, most of all, to be herself again.
Tasha and Alyana spend all their winter nights together, while during daytime, Tasha also helps and parents and grandfather manage the farm they're living in—somehow making it a good excuse for Tasha not to meet Klara and Mika, two kids her age living in the mountains nearby. It's not that she doesn't to meet them, but she's actually too scared.
However, the more Tasha spends time with Alyana, the more confident she becomes… until she goes skiing with both Klara and Mika, discovering that they are friendly and kind, too. Could she finally manage to trus other people?
But Tasha also knows that when winter ends, Alyana will have to leave. And she doesn't want that. She wants to find a way to keep Alyana, so she can show her all the beautiful things in spring. Winter lasts, and it's so long that Tasha's grandpa's cough worsen over the days, people and animals start to lack food, crops cannot be planted and grow… Could that be linked to Alyana's staying there?
-
I just loved everything about this book, and it probably would be a little too long for me to go over everything. But one thing I really wanted to highlight because it felt so, so good was how healthy Tasha's relationship with Klara and Mika was! They wanted to meet her, propose her to come skiing with them and so on, but they never forced her to do so. And once they finally meet, they keep it that way, accepting that Tasha needs some time to join them. They never ask her why she doesn't want to do something and just accept it—and, more importantly, respect it. And whenever Tasha needs their help, they don't argue, they just trust her.
I feel like this kind of friendships need to be depicted so much more often, as this just felt so refreshing.

Anyway, this review is going quite messy, so I'm gonna stop there.
I loved this book, and cannot recommend it enough, just like any other novels by Sophie Anderson!
V deň, keď prvýkrát vidí padať sneh, postaví so svojím dedkom dievčatko zo snehu a praje si, aby ožilo.
Inspired by a Russian fairytale this charming tale sees young Tasha living with her parents and grandfather on a farm. An incident in the past sees Tasha afraid of making friends or going out much but, one night, she wishes for a friend and the snow girl she and her grandfather made comes to life. This is such a sweet story and it's wonderfully illustrated.
To be published 26 October. This is such a gorgeous wintry read for 8-12 year olds. The cover is just beautiful and I look forward to seeing the physical book because I am sure the illustrations will add that extra sparkle. Tasha and her parents have moved to live with her grandfather as he is finding it difficult to cope with his farm. Tasha, following an incident in her home town, finds it difficult to trust or make friends. She stays within the boundaries of the farm, feeling very isolated. When it snows, she is enchanted and after hearing a story about a snow girl from her grandfather, together they build one. Tasha makes a wish for her snow girl to come alive. That night she does. A lovely friendship develops between Tasha and the snow girl, Alyana. They meet at night and Alyana takes Tasha on magical expeditions. However, the winter is taking its toll. Her grandfather's health is suffering and the community are finding it difficult. Tasha wants her grandfather to get well but knows that only the spring can cure him and once spring arrives, Alyana will disappear. She is torn. This is a novel about friendship, reaching out to those who care about you and accepting their help. It's a novel full of wintry magic and I adored the relationship between Tasha and her grandfather. A perfect book to curl up and read together on a wintry night.
There is genuine magic in everything Sophie Anderson writes and this is no exception! Based on an old folktale, like much of Andersons' stories, The Snow Girl adds a slightly different twist. Tasha is hiding a deep fear that came from an accident in her old home. It is bold and fearless Alyana that helps her face that fear, that listens to her and offers her the friendship Tasha needs to grow beyond. But Alyana is made of winter and spring must come eventually....or must it? An exquisitely beautiful tale of facing fears, reaching out to new friends and learning when and how to let go, this book is filled with the sparkling magic of winter. Mystical and full of snow spirits and superstition, brave and freeing, old and new...an expertly crafted story that wraps its' way into your heart, bringing warmth and joy to the deepest, coldest winter. The blue-hued illustrations throughout add to the magical journey. Just read it!
Sophie Anderson's books always transport you to magical places and The Snow Girl is no different.
Tasha lives with her parents and grandfather at his farm and, following an incident. is wary of making friends and getting to know other people. After her grandfather tells her an old folk story of a snow girl, they build one together and Tasha makes a wish that the snow girl would be real. Later that night, Alyana the snow girl comes to life and Tasha spends her evenings exploring with Alyana and learning about friendship. But will she be able to say goodbye to Alyana when the time comes?
This was an enchanting story of friendship, learning to trust others and trusting in yourself. A great read for upper key stage 2.
A lovely wintery adventure full of Sophie Anderson’s tell tale heart warming characters, exciting adventure, and an important lesson to learn woven into the story.
This is the youngest of her books I’d say in terms of reading age. Suitable for a strong seven year old but 8-9 really.
Deals with anxiety and slight trauma, learning to let go and move forward. Having to make hard decisions.
A lovely book of a girl finding strength and courage after an incident and learning to trust again. I believe this book will be helpful for the reader age (and older - ahem) as woven within the story are life lessons. Of those are knowing when to ask for help and when to let go and how holding on to the negative is causing all the other negatives we face. This book will be a good one to start the year for young peoples book club.
3.5 stars I have wanted to read a book by Sophie Anderson for a long time and finally I did! The book cover and the illustrations are beautiful. However the story was sometimes a bit too simple for me, especially in the middle part. I liked Tasha as a main character, even though I sometimes thought: Why do you do that now? xD I think it is a good book for winter with a little bit of magical feeling, but it is not the most exciting story. It's more about the importance of letting go.
This was once again a wonderful Sophie Anderson novel! It was filled with magic, lore, myth, folklore, and all woven together to make it a beautiful tapestry. I can only recommend her books, they are so whimsical and magical!
I just wasn’t vibing. It was slow, nothing was really happening and I knew it was barreling towards a devastating ending with both the Snow Girl and her grandfather most likely dying and I just didn’t want that right now.
Another beautiful and heartwarming book by Sophie Anderson, once again exploring deep themes such as trauma, fears and the power of family and friendship.
It wasn’t my favorite book by her, but I still loved every second of it. And as always, the stunning illustrations made the experience even more magical.
Thank you Sophie Anderson for making me rediscover the magic of children’s books 🩵
Such a beautiful middlegrade story!! I loved Sophie Anderson's writing, (and will definitely pick up more of her books) the themes she explored, the characters and the atmosphere!!
