Popular author, speaker, and pastor of Zoe Church in Los Angeles, Chad Veach tackles one of the Christian’s greatest an obsession with self. Ego often sneaks up on us in varying forms of narcissism, subtly turning so much of our attention to our needs and desires that we fail to recognize other people’s. The Bible depicts the destructiveness of pride—but have we taken note of the rewards of embracing humbleness? Veach reminds us that God wants us to lead satisfied, successful lives with genuine joy and peace, and humility is the path to get there. A self-proclaimed recovering narcissist, Veach has learned the power of humility. He wants to destigmatize the humility journey by normalizing the need for regular ego checks. A quick reset in attitude in any situation will create a delicate balance between self-denial and self-absorption. Pride will draw us into an endless cycle of striving and conniving, defending and deflecting, racing and competing, but the Bible gives the remedy to stop it—by the power of humility. Amongst the alarming and increasing levels of narcissism in society and the Christian church today, Veach delivers a passionate call for making a simple but fundamental shift in perspective that cultivates humility.
In I Bet You Think This Book is About You, Chad Veach has written a book about our ego and how pride affects our life negatively and how we can in turn to becoming humble. He begins about how pride has gotten in our way before in apologizing to a friend or family member we have wronged, pride might have cause us to treat others rudely, or it could have kept us from learning a new skill. Pride makes us want to look good and achieve fame. We are determined to get our own way. We want to promote ourselves and make ourselves look good. And there is countless exampled found in Proverbs about the dangers of pride. Instead, he teaches readers on how we can display humility. Some of these include listening more than you talk, treat people with respect, apologize quickly, admit your mistakes, not easily offended, you study to learn more, seek feedback to improve, just to name a few. He explained how even Google admits to searching for job candidates that display humility and they are willing to step back and embrace and listen to the ideas of others. They believe this helps you learn and grow.
One of my favorite things was about the humility test. These included the service test and choosing to do things we might consider below us. The failure test and how we get back up after experiencing a setback. The delay test and how to wait the waiting periods. The criticism test and handling the negative comment we face. The comparison test and can we allow someone to be better than us and not get jealous. Another helpful area was about the humility cycle and how we can relearn how to be humble.
I would recommend this life changing book about becoming humble to anyone who is ready to break free from their ego’s and they are tired of living for only themselves and they are seeking more happiness. It was interesting learning more about pride and how we can avoid falling into the pitfalls. I have read all of his other books and he just keep digging deeper into scriptures and sharing principles that will change our lives.
4.5/5! Chad Veach knows how to write practical guides to concepts that seem complex. This book is such an amazing example of one of the many ways that God’s backward kingdom works in our everyday lives. He also does an amazing job at breaking the misconceptions about what humility is. Definitely a great read for everybody. This book IS about you!!
This is an excellent book about dealing with ego and pride. Veach has very insightful teaching about humility and provides lots of practical suggestions. I am impressed with how essential humility is for living the Christian life. Veach helps readers understand the shift in mindset from pride to humility. He encourages us to understand who we are and align ourselves with what God says about us. He reminds us developing humility takes intentionality and practice. It will take us the rest of our lives to perfect it.
I highly recommend this book. Veach expresses a wisdom about living the Christian life I rarely see. His practical ideas provide the tools we readers need to think rightly about ourselves. His suggestions for expressing humility in action are great. “In a narcissistic world, humility in your secret weapon,” Veach says. (195) Read this book to find out why that is so.
Chad Veach does an amazing job of balancing conviction without condemnation. This book gives powerful insight to how pride might slowly be taking control of the reigns in your life as well as practical steps to identify, understand and redirect to humility and confidence in Jesus.
Great book. It is written around faith and faith based ideas if that’s not what you’re into I would avoid. Alternatively, you can also read it as if you were reading an old Greek philosophy book.
Overall, lots of mindful ideas to focus on and worry less about yourself.
